Description
editI have found that, for a major and well-established Olympic sport, the Wikipedia coverage of modern competitive archery has been significantly less than other comparative sports. As a result, I have made an effort to improve the quality and quantity of pages on competitions, organisations and athletes, and having established some best practices, would like others to join the effort. There is scope for thousands of pages, from competitions, organisations, athletes and historical and cultural context, all of which would meet the notability criteria. Areas that would benefit from contribution are:
- Improving referencing - particularly news articles and other references independent of the major archery federations. This would benefit from those able to read and access news and articles in countries where archery has significant coverage, such as Korea, India and China
- Athlete biographies - there are a large number of articles on major athletes that are either stubs or overly reliant on either the World Archery or Olympic biography pages or simply listing the medals that athlete has one. Fleshing out biographical data, including medal tables and performance timelines, and sourcing free to use photos would be priorities (NB, medal tables for athletes should include only Olympics, World Championships, World Cup Final, and major regional competitions)
- Competition pages - Improving the quality and detail of current and past major competitions, particularly those for which pages don't currently exist (e.g., regional championships, field championships, para sport). Other specific areas could include developing a specific template for Recurve and Compound competitions - currently tennis ones are used for recurve and general for compound, which don't quite match the specifics of archery competitions
- Maintaining and updating results and rankings
- Updating rules and terminology - The World Archery Federation is no longer known as FITA, and FITA rounds are now known as '1440 rounds'. A lot of pages use outdated terminology
- Nation specific pages - Currently only India and Bhutan have pages about archery in that nation. Given the importance of the sport in cultures across the world, and the success of nations such as Russia, South Korea, Italy and the United States, there is scope for many more of these
- Categories and navboxes - The wiring of Archery pages, such as templates, categories, navboxes etc needs improving to Wikipedia standards
Improve the quality of Wikipedia pages on archery, and modern competitive archery in particular Cjccorn (talk) 19:13, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
