Description
editI had come across Wikipedia:WikiProject Engineering though it covers the engineering field, I believe like Wikipedia:WikiProject Civil engineering electrical engineers prefer a separate wiki project that covers the articles under the scope of electrical technology and science Shriram (talk) 14:29, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
- Because, say Wikipedia:WikiProject Engineering has the scope of electrical engineering but I believe that does not solely contain electrical engineers to improve the article so the concentration towards electrical technology is less. Now Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics, I would rather say electronics is an evolved branch in the field of electrical engineering, there its better to deal with ICs, semiconductors, circuits etc rather than circuit breakers, switch gears. Wikipedia:WikiProject Energy is also a good project but that includes many other aspects that are not related to electrical engineering.

- I consider many branches of Engineering underrepresented on Wikipedia, be it the lack of good articles itself, or lack of coordination between volunteers. I would be interested in this. Lynch7 17:45, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- All the major branches of Engineering should have projects on Wikipedia, not just WP:WikiProject Civil engineering. EE covers Electrical/Electronics/Power/Computers, an important area of the modern world. 70.24.248.211 (talk) 08:55, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Would not join, but I support the creation of this project. extra999 (talk) 09:27, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Support, this subject is seriously underepreseted at GA and FA. Besides Electrical engineering itself, just about all the EE articles at FA were brought there by me. I would welcome some support in this activity. SpinningSpark 15:18, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I totally support this, because I am an Electrial Engineer and Im sick of only finding a "ELECTRONICS PORTAL" here, which is totally BULLSHIT on it's own, since Electronics is a sub-section of Electrical Engineering. The Electronics Portal should be merged with this project and then devided internally into its major sub-sections Physics/Electrical/Power/Electronics/Computers/Robotics like in real life, like it is being though in every damn University. Besides, the Electronics Portal is linked to the German "ELEKTROTECHNIK PORTAL" which is equivalent to the english "ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING" and is therefore bullshit, since obviously Electrical Engineering is not Electronics! I find it extremly unearthing that there is an Electronics portal by itself and no Electrical Engineering portal. Seemingly everyone who has not studied electrical engineering has forgotten that there was Power Electrics long before we had active components like damn Transistors that made amplification possible so we can exclusively work with small voltages for calculating. The Germans have set up their Portal very nicely I must say - the way the field is actually representable. Alone the fact that electronics would not exist without Power supplies taking line voltage of 120V (US) or 230V (Europe) and converting it down to electronics voltage using a TRANSFORMER which clearly was developed looooong before the Transistor and is a major part of POWER ELECTRICS. And those who would argue in favor of Batteries for Electronics: How the hell do you people think Batteries get charged in the first place? You think the physics of Batteries is not part of Electrical Engineering? Or that accumalators are not charged by generators that are clearly part of ELECTRICS? Electronic is solemly and entirely dependant on Electrical Engineering to be viable and therfore it must be, as in reality, submerged into a grand Portal called "ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING". The easiest way would be to just rename the Electronics Portal into Electrical Engineering and internally devise subsections, one being "Electronics". At least the whole field of electrics will be in one damn place - FINALLY!
Discussion
editI think Wikiproject electronics should either be subsumed, or else made a sub-project of this proposed project. The lack of an EE project has led to numerous inappropriate articles being placed within the scope of WP electronics for want of a better home. In many cases I have seent the article itself incorrectly describe the subject device/principle as "electronic" rather than "electrical", probably under influence from the WP electronics templates. - Concur, while distinct there's probably too much overlap between these two projects. —Ruud 20:07, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Object, consumer electronics products also exist under WP:Electronics, which shouldn't be covered by an EE project. (It would be similar to the split between WP:Computing and WP:Computer Science) 70.24.248.211 (talk) 06:27, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- A quick look at Category:WikiProject Electronics articles reveals that it is mostly populated with articles about circuits and components. It is also clear from the Wikiproject page that it was conceived as an engineering project. I'm not sure that it is objectionable to have consumer products in an engineering project, but if a split is desired, it would be better to create a Consumer Electronics project. SpinningSpark 08:13, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Other electrical and electronic products are also covered by WPElectronics, so the name WPElectronics is appropriate for that project. It's just transferring the EE topics over to this new topic that's needed. I don't see the need to transfer alligator clips over, or some particular industrial electricity generator product. 70.24.248.211 (talk) 08:24, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
