Description
editA WikiProject covering domestic poultry, including chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, turkey, domestic pigeons and quail. I previously proposed this in 2011 but I thought I'd try again now, as the community has sufficiently changed.
Poultry can cover a lot of things; possible topics include exhibition poultry, history of poultry, poultry usage in food and egg supply, poultry diseases and much more. There is I understand more chickens than humans on earth, so plenty of scope available. Poultry has been for some time is stuck on the weird edge of WikiProject Birds and WikiProject Agriculture, with some interest from WikiProject Food and drink according to banners on talk pages, so it'd be great to finally get our own project up and running. - Wikipedia:WikiProject Agriculture (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
- None of the present projects really cover things properly - poultry, and domesticated birds in general, are a fringe interest for WikiProject Birds and WikiProject Agriculture is vast and therefore not suited to focusing on the topic.

Oppose
edit- Unless you get say 10+ editors who are really interested in being involved. Otherwise you waste a lot of time cluttering up talk pages with banners and then .... nothing much at all. We have too many inactive Wikiprojects as it is. Wiki at Royal Society John (talk) 22:08, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- There are too many moribund and fiefdom-acting micro-wikiprojects as it is. This topic is adequately covered by the livestock taskforce of WPP Agriculture. The entire point of having taskforces/workgroups is to stop forking off entire projects for every imaginable topic, and to merge more of them into bigger projects taht actually have continually active membership, and viable assement processes, and other pooled resources. — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 02:57, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
edit- Why not just have a poultry task force of birds wikiproject? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 18:42, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- In my opinion, the projects are just to different. A task force of WikiProject Agriculture might be more appropriate... but still, not exactly the same issue. The topic in general is wide; because its the issue of domestic usage, conservation, exhibition, culinary, disease. Agriculture for example can hardly handle the culinary area, and birds wikiproject doesn't touch domestic subjects most of the time. JTdale Talk 13:04, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Approaching chicken breeds as someone who keeps the birds as pets/for eggs, the consistency of the breed articles is quite poor in general and could benefit from a task force to at least come up with a recommended structure and content for the articles. Kat (talk) 20:32, 19 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- @JTdale: I noticed this was never formally closed, so I'll add a followup comment: A task force of WP:BIRDS seems to be the proper home, as there's now a domestic pigeons task force there. Some WP:BIRDS participants, myself included, are mostly domesticates editors. I honestly can't see any problem with it being a joint task force for that matter, also listed with WP:AGRICULTURE as a sibling task force to WP:LIVESTOCK. I agree with KittyKat that the articles need work, and I help a little here and there on them. I would join this task force. Failing enough people to start a task force, its scope can be subsumed by the WP:LIVESTOCK task force of WP:AGRICULTURE, which already covers all farm breeds other than horses. PS: Might want to expand the scope to include peacocks and some other not-quite-domesicates that are frequently selectively breed to an extent. I also wouldn't worry about WP:AGRICULTURE not being the perfect scope for culinary topics; it's close enough (most of what it covers are food staples), and it's not the job of parent projects to micromanage every detail of what their taskforces do. :-) — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 14:27, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
