Wikipedia:WikiProject Fire Service/Collaboration

Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to the Fire Service, which is the work that firefighters do around the world each day. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject and Wikipedia:WikiProject/Best practices.

To indicate interest in reactivating this project, please go to the Talk page and comment. --Penndyl (talk) 19:17, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Guidelines

edit

Structure

edit

Fire Department articles should be structured largely along the following guidelines

  1. Infobox - Any article about a specific fire department should use the {{Infobox fire department}} template.
  2. History - A brief history of the department.
  3. Stations and apparatus - This should be in table format and cited as much as possible.
    • Only active stations should be included. Closed or future stations are not applicable (violates WP:NOTSTATSBOOK).
    • Whenever possible the city or neighborhood of stations should be used rather than just their address
  4. Notable incidents - Notable incidents are ones that have their own page on Wikipedia. If no such page exists, the incident doesn't qualify as notable.
  5. Popular Culture - Notable depictions of the department in movies and television.

What NOT to include

edit

Do not include the following on a page for a fire department (Remember that Wikipedia is not a stats book nor is it a memorial):

  • A list of fallen firefighters is not notable UNLESS they were killed in an otherwise notable incident, in which case the names of the fallen should be included on the page for the notable incident.
  • List of apparatus specifications.
    • There is no need to detail the make and model of every apparatus in a department's fleet.

Citations

edit

Cite as much information as possible. This way the articles will have more credibility. Extraordinary claims require citations from very reliable sources. If you don't want something you have added to be deleted, cite a reliable source, assuming the source supports your statement.

Scope

edit

WikiProject Fire Service exists to better coordinate efforts to expand, organize, and improve Wikipedia's coverage of articles related to the fire service.

How you can help

edit

Articles needing infoboxes

edit

Any page that has been tagged with needing an infobox will fall under the Fire Service articles needing infoboxes category.

Articles needing images

edit

Any page that has been tagged with needing an image or a logo will fall under the Fire service articles needing logos or images category.

Departments needing logos

edit

Any page that uses the {{Infobox fire department}} template and does not have an image will be added to Fire departments needing logos category. As long as the image you use is ONLY used in the infobox, you can use this code when you upload the image:

==Summary==
{{Non-free use rationale 2
|Description = Logo of the [[FIRE_DEPARTMENT_NAME]].
|Source = URL_IMAGE_OBTAINED_FROM
|Article = FIRE_DEPARTMENT_NAME
|Purpose = to serve as the primary means of visual identification at the top of the article dedicated to the entity in question.
|Replaceability = n.a.
|Minimality = Will only appear in the infobox.
|Commercial = n.a.
}}

==Licensing==
{{Non-free logo|image has rationale=yes}}

Chicago firefighters on the scene of an emergency.

Fire Station No. 1 (Los Angeles, California) is the current WikiProject Fire Service collaboration. Please do your best to improve this article.

Similar to the Article Creation and Improvement Drive, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

Candidates

I'm going to qualify my nomination with a plea for help. I started this article a while back, and have been unable to maintain its quality pretty much since its inception. it has long been suffering from waht i consider to be a bias placed upon it by a troll from NJ who doesn't realize that fire service jargon often has a variety of meanings, and refuses to allow the scope of the article to include meanings that aren't used in his precinct. I long ago gave up on this article. It's pretty shitty these days. you can often tell how bad it's gotten by the number of fire department links on the bottom. PLEASE help this article out. -Shaggorama 01:11, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
