Submissions
editBefore an edit can qualify for points it must meet two basic criteria:
- The edited article or media file must be tagged with
{{USRD}}
- All submissions must be accompanied with a diff showing the changes being made.
Instead of everyone submitting everything to one page, participants are urged to create a subpage in their user space. The judges will watch each page and review submissions accordingly.
Scoring
editScoring is split into four major categories: class improvement, article recognition, media, and project participation. As in years past, there is a multiplier for editing in certain states. Point values below do not reflect multipliers; refer to the tables if you cannot determine what your score should be.
Multiplier
editThis section refers to a state's relative WikiWork (Ω) as shown on the project leaderboard. The multipliers apply to each of the four scoring sections. Bonuses do not receive the multipliers.
- A state's position on the leaderboard at the beginning of the round is locked in for the entire round.
- The top five states have a 0.5x multiplier
- States below the USRD average have a 2x multiplier
- The bottom five states, and any territories regardless of position, have a 5x multiplier
- The multiplier for multi-state routes is determined by the state with the highest WikiWork (good if it goes through Maine)
- County roads and Low-Importance articles have a 0.5x multiplier on top of the state multiplier (2.5x max in the bottom 5)
Class improvement
editNo points will be awarded for individual edits alone. However, if you improve an article enough that its class assessment can be moved up, points may be awarded based on the number of classes. Class improvement points will not be awarded above B-Class. B-Class assessments must be made by an outside party.
- Stub→Start, Start→C, C→B – 1 point
- Stub→C, Start→B – 4
- Stub→B – 9
If you improve an article by one class early in the round and by another class later in the round, points will be pro-rated so you will get the full two- or three-class improvement. Once the next round begins, points cannot be pro-rated from the previous round.
- Article creation
For the sake of scoring, a newly-created article is considered a stub. Creating an article and leaving it at Stub-Class will earn zero points as there is "no change" in assessment. Participants are strongly encouraged to not create stubs.

Media
editPoints may be awarded for creating maps, shields, or KML files and for uploading photographs and videos. The highway must be featured in any images or videos.
- Maps task force-compliant map – 5
- Shields – 1
- Editors must demonstrate there was a need for a shield to be created, that is, you cannot simply make a batch of county road shields, dump them into a category on Commons, and score big points. There are a number of ways to demonstrate a need:
- KML files - 2 Note: KMLs are exempt from the project tagging requirement
- Uploading images
- Self-created images – 3
- Other freely-licensed images – 1
- Note: No points will be awarded for images from Doug Kerr on Flickr.
Project participation
editPoints may be awarded for working behind the scenes at WP:USRD, such as contributing to our featured portal or conducting reviews of articles. Reviews must be thorough and the changes requested must be generally accepted by the article's nominator.
- Portal contributions (DYK, ITN, SA, SP, etc.) – 10 Note: This can only be claimed once per round. If you add two DYKs and nominate the selected picture, you can only get 10 points.
- Good article reviews – 5
- A-Class reviews – 15
- Featured article candidate reviews – 10
- Note: As most people review at ACR and then support at FAC, participants may not claim both ACR and FAC reviews for the same article unless a substantial review is given at each forum.

Bonuses
editAdditional points may be awarded for rare tasks or accomplishments. To qualify for bonuses, all submissions must already have met the original points criteria. Each bonus may be claimed only once unless noted. Participants may propose bonuses so long as they can be earned by all participants.
- General
- Successful challenges – 10 (no limit)
- Note: If more than one person challenges the same issue within a short period of time, points will be split evenly among the challengers

- Article recognition
- 10 successful GANs – 50

- Uploading a self-created photograph and using it in an article within an hour of taking the picture - varies, but speed earns more points (EXIF metadata required in photograph)
- Calculation: 60−<the number of minutes between taking the photo and using it in an article>
- Example: If you take a photograph at 12:00 and add it to the article at 12:45, you would get 15 points.
- Creating and uploading 10 maps – 50
