Possible structure of article
editA suggested structure – not at all prescriptive – feel free to ignore entirely! (although a reasonable amount of referenced text with an intro, Description, See also, and References section should be enough to make an article a start rather than a stub):
- (infobox)
- Intro (or lede) – what it is and where
- Description
- (History)
- could be very brief for some prehistoric sites (possibly combine with description)
- (Recent history)
- for example, site visits, excavations, scheduling info, involvement in planning applications
- also some monuments are also in conservation areas etc. – worth mentioning if the monument is a key part of the area
- (Access)
- some sites, eg ones in care of Cadw, will have set opening times, others might be accessible at all times and others might be on private property
- See also
- List of Scheduled Monuments in Anglesey
- other, related nearby sites

Infoboxes and navboxes and other templates
editInfoboxes
editBoth {{Infobox historic site}}
(example at Bedd-y-Cawr Hillfort) and {{Infobox ancient site}}
(example at Bryn Celli Ddu) provide the capability to show an image, map, and designation details. The template {{Infobox designation list}}
can often be embedded in other infoboxes (example at Rhayader Castle) with syntax such as:
| module = {{Infobox designation list | embed = yes | designation1 = Scheduled monument }}
or
| embed = {{Infobox designation list | embed = yes | designation1 = Scheduled monument }}
You need to check the parent infobox to see if this is possible and for the correct syntax.
Navboxes
editPossible examples include:
{{Anglesey}}
(there is a section for Ancient sites){{Anglesey churches}}
{{Edwardian castles in Wales}}
(only applies to Beaumaris Castle in Anglesey){{European megaliths}}
(there is a section for Wales){{European Standing Stones}}
(there is a section for Wales){{World Heritage Sites in the United Kingdom}}
(only applies to Beaumaris Castle in Anglesey)
Could be worth creating {{Scheduled monuments in Anglesey}}
– showing monuments by era and type, eg Neolithic & Settlement
Other templates
edit{{Portal|Wales}}
– Goes in either (1) See also section, (2) External links section, or (3) anywhere else appropriate.
If you only create a stub, then add {{Anglesey-struct-stub}}
, and possibly {{UK-archaeology-stub}}
.
If you don't include coordinates then add {{coord missing|Anglesey}}
.

Some examples
editTry to include examples of stubs, starts, B and C, Good Articles and Featured Articles on scheduled monuments
Group articles
editIt may be useful to also have some articles grouping and listing Scheduled monuments (and other sites) on a particular topic, for example:
- Standing stones on Anglesey
- Mills on Anglesey
Resources and sources
editSome useful resources, many of which can be used for references are listed below.
All of the monuments at List of Scheduled Monuments in Anglesey have (at least) two references from coflein (the online database of the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW) from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW)), and from archwilio (the online database of the Historic Environment Record (HER) from the four Welsh Archaeological Trusts, specifically Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT) for Anglesey).
Both coflein and archwilio give basic classification (name, community, principal area, grid reference etc) with a description. The coflein source often has an Online images subsection, whereas archwilio also gives details of events (site visits, excavations etc), sources (for example, online reports of various sites), and legal protection (scheduled monument, listed building etc). The two different sources can differ in the details (site name, period etc)...
- Historic Wales – "map enabled portal for historic environment information in Wales. The portal allows simultaneous searching of hundreds of thousands of records relating to archaeological monuments, historic buildings and artefacts held by different organisations across Wales." – available in English and Welsh.
- Useful search for records from RCAHMW, Cadw, the four Archaeological Trusts, and the National Museum of Wales. A bit limited by only being able to find through the map (no text search), but ok if you have the OS grid reference from one of the records mentioned above.
- Coflein Mapping – map portal (English and Welsh) that allows text searching but only of the National Monuments Record of Wales.
- Cadw (English and Welsh) – good for sites in Cadw's care. Less good for getting to actual records of listed buildings, scheduled monuments.
- In fairness, Cadw's listed buildings records are visible through the Historic Wales website. For scheduled monuments, you can just see the Name, Id, Type, Local Authority, and Community (but no designation details or description). I understand that they are in the process of making these available online in the future.
- Welsh principal area councils – do maintain lists of scheduled monuments and listed buildings in their area, but aren't always available online. They do often include information on at least some scheduled monuments (see Visit Anglesey and Anglesey Heritage website examples given above).
Other general sources include:
- Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales have a number of inventories (listed at their [1]), and the earlier ones (1911 to 1965) are available for free from google play. They never produced inventories for Monmouthshire and Ceredigion, but the Anglesey one (from 1937 and reprinted in 1960) is here:
- Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales and Monmouthshire (1960) [1937]. An Inventory of the Ancient Monuments in Anglesey. London: HMSO. OCLC 631587260 – via google play.
- The Pevsner Architectural Guides (The Buildings of Wales) provide good coverage on any monument that is a building (less so on other monuments). Some of the older ones are available, at least in part, online, but the Anglesey one is not (as far as I can tell):
- Haslam, Richard; Orbach, Julian; Voelcker, Adam; Alfrey, Judith (2009). Gwynedd : Anglesey, Caernarvonshire and Merioneth. Pevsner Architectural Guides (The Buildings of Wales). New Haven & London: Yale University Press. ISBN 978-0-300-14169-6. OCLC 883603935.
- London Gazette – some have dates that monuments were scheduled:
- "No. 13873". The Edinburgh Gazette. 8 December 1922. p. 1881. – shows that Beaumaris Castle, Bryn Celli Ddu Dolmen, Henblas Dolmen, Pant y Saer Dolmen, Plas Newydd Dolmen, and Plas Newydd Chambered Mound were all designated in 1922.
