Time tracking sample

edit
  • 2021-12-23 – 32 mins – set up, gather diffs on old versions, list sub-articles, repair articlehistory to find old GA noms, 14:55 to 15:27
  • 2021-12-26 – 58 mins - do basic Earwig checks for all previous versions, add {{Pd-notice}} on NOAA sites used, no copyvio found, 3:17 to 4:15
  • 2021-12-27 – 1 hour, 46 mins – starting on copying within, 00:35 to 02:21, got only a start
  • 2021-12-27 – 2 hours, 25 mins – Earwig timing out, 15:20 to 17:45, two left to run at GA version
  • 2021-12-28 – 2 hours, 45 mins – 0 UTC to 02:45, one CWW left to check, then to add all templates and null edits
  • 2021-12-28 – 1 hour, 30 mins – 0 started at 13:35, finished at 15:05

Total time, about 10 hours. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:23, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Summary

edit

An interesting finding was that multiple editors were correctly attributing in edit summary as early as 2005 and 2006 (1), 2006 (2), so those didn't need to be templated. Several instances of copying within without attribution occurred during the 2009 FAR. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:06, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Completed. With public domain text now attributed, this article meets FA criterion 1f.

  1. It took about ten hours to complete this work; the time was inflated because of the very high number of sub-articles in a summary style overview FA. In a more typical article, with only three or four summarized sub-articles, hopefully the work can be done in about four hours.
  2. When I was almost done with this work, as requested on the FAR page by Hurricane Noah, I discovered that this suite of articles is not included in the CCI (see Wikipedia talk:Contributor copyright investigations/WikiProject Tropical cyclones#Tornado). Nonetheless, with the similar histories, the same work is and was needed.
  3. I did not encounter any copyvio from non-public domain sources.
  4. On public domain sources, I found attribution needed with {{Pd-notice}} at Tornado, and I incidentally came across this edit at Tornado preparedness, and added the public domain attribution there.
  5. Other than what I encountered incidentally while browsing edit histories, I did not complete any additional investigation on the sub-articles.
  6. I found many instances of copying within (CWW); some were correctly attributed with a link in edit summary, and others were not. I did not find content copied in to Tornado; all instances I found were of content copied from Tornado to sub-articles. Of note, it takes just as much time to investigate those that are correctly attributed as those that are not, so it might be helpful to add talk page templates even when correctly attributing. I want to thank and acknowledge editors Beland, Dan100, and Forderud for correctly attributing CWW over a decade ago, and remind editors Thegreatdr, Evoluaxia, and Runningonbrains to review WP:CWW and the work needed here to track down unattributed copying within.
  7. It is my hope that this page, although an exaggeration of the amount of work that will be needed in less highly summarized articles, will provide an example of the work needed throughout weather articles. Hopefully that work can be done before articles appear at FAC, FAR, and GA processes in the future, to assure that compliance with copyright policy is met per WP:WIAFA and WP:WIAGA. As content review processes check for copyright policy compliance, it is important to realize that violations can be obscured via the extreme amount of copyediting that is done during content review processes, so previous versions need to be checked.

@SandyGeorgia Wow, this is a really extensive and impressive review, I have no issues with it. My only recommendation would be turning off the "use search engine" feature with Earwig, since in my experience it only really finds mirrors and wastes time. It's only useful in situational circumstances, like if you're looking at the edits of a user who doesn't consistently cite their sources or if you're trying to intentionally find mirrors. Sorry again for not responding so quick... I've been occupied over the holidays and have been taking some time off to recover from an illness. I promise I'll get to these over the next few days and help out. Moneytrees🎄Talk/CCI guide 05:18, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the tip, Moneytrees, and thanks for checking in on my work. Best regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:53, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
