Harry Potter: Ravenclaw

Why is the ravenclaw emblem not shown in the Ravenclaw userbox? I thinks we need it.

Sci-fi, but no Fantasy or "Speculative Fiction"?

I'd like to know how come we have "This user enjoys reading..." tags for science fiction, mystery, humor, thrillers, legal thrillers, poetry, romance and even short stories, as well as a number of fantasy authors' works, such as Harry Potter and Discworld and Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia...

...but no straightforward "This user enjoys reading Fantasy." tag, let alone a more inclusive "Speculative Fiction" tag (I'd settle for Speculative Fiction, that I would, since I already also am using the sci-fi tag, but just... it seems WEIRD not to have a fantasy one, doesn't it?). This looks like a job for... somebody who knows who to actually create a cat/tag for fantasy readers! (I have no idea how to do that, myself). Any takers? Runa27 09:54, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Fantasy

I notice you're the second person to ask that question recently. Historically, the term "science fiction" has been used (in the publishing industry, at least) so broadly as to encompass fantasy within its range; so when I put a science fiction userbox on my page, I certainly don't mean to exclude Lankhmar, Prydain or Earthsea from my realms. As to "speculative fiction": while I kinda like the inclusiveness of the term, it is widely perceived as a pretentious way of saying "science fiction and fantasy and stuff, but intellectually respectable without any geek cooties or popularity"; and few people are eager to be associated with it. yeah or id say: please dont call fantasy "science fiction"! if they used a term wrongly before, doesnt mean everyone now has to be condemned to. everyone that knows anything about it (not meant to say you dont, but to exclude people with no knowledge at all of these genres) associates science fiction with what it technically implies (fiction relating to scientific speculation), so NOT to fantasy, which is fiction set in a imaginarily enriched reality, io technologically. also speculative fiction is by now the official umbrella term for fantasy, science fiction and horror.

I see and respect your point of view, but the fact is that the bookselling and publishing trades, for example, still lump fantasy and SF books together on the shelves (except when pretending that they are "just novels"). Two of the oldest SF and fantasy organizations in the world, the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society and the National Fantasy Fan Federation, still use the term "fantasy" in their names. (And "sci-fi" is considered pejorative by many SF fans, that's why I mentioned it.) Still, there's no reason not to want an "I read fantasy" userbox! --Orange Mike 15:09, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

agreed. but actually, i hate it when im looking for science fiction on a shelf that reads "fantasy", or when im looking fantasy on a shelf reading "science fiction". i could see why one would lump most science fiction (or horror for that matter) in with fantasy though, as you could call it imaginary, it could be a subversion belonging to fantasy (except hard sf though, dont think that can be considered fantasy), but deffinitely not the other way around, and i prefere being able to distinct between them.--Lygophile 09:36, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Though publishers may "lump" the two genres together, I do not think they are one and the same, akin to Lygophile. Please consider that Wikipedia separates fantasy and sci-fi as genres in its articles. If it is really that detrimental to Wikipedia, then I suppose the Fantasy userbox is not appropriate. I'm a little bit of a newbie at this. It's my first full day as a Wikipedian (if you can believe it). So far I've managed to figure out how to make my own userbox for my favorite author, James Dashner, and I don't know if I'm being too forward or what, but I went ahead and stuffed it under Authors. Serious formatting issues

There are some serious formatting issues in the section The Lord of the Rings and related books and all sections after that. At a guess, the issue seems to be flaws in the transcluded boxes, but I can't pinpoint anything. Help would be appreciated. TechBear | Talk | Contributions 14:29, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

I believe there are just too many on the page and the content needs to be divided into multiple pages. Perhaps Books and book series could be moved to a separate page? It's the largest section, so that seems the most obvious choice to me. I'm not familiar with Wikipedia practices for this; do we need some sort of consensus in the discussion, or can I just make a new page myself and move the content? - Kylara (talk) 21:29, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Why not list all authors by name in TOC?

It's not clear why all the authors for which there is a userbox on this page aren't listed in the table of contents by name. Why on earth is Jane Austen under "Miscellaneous authors"? It's like discrimination or something. And so, unless there are any strong objections, I was going to go about organizing this here... Ender and Peter 22:46, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
