I'd like to know where, specifically, any law or Wikipedia law bans the use of logos in userboxes. -Acjelen 13:44, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
And I quote from the Fair use criteria:
Fair use images should only be used in the article namespace. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages. They should be linked, not inlined, from talk pages when they are the topic of discussion. This is because it is the policy of the Wikimedia Foundation to allow an unfree image only if no free alternative exists and only if it significantly improves the article it is included on. All other uses, even if legal under the fair use clauses of copyright law, should be avoided to keep the use of unfree images to a minimum. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis if there is a broad consensus that doing so is necessary to the goal of creating a free encyclopedia (like the templates used as part of the Main Page).
As logos are used without permission on Wikipedia as fair use, that is your WP policy. -slowpokeiv 14:56, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I've only known of the fair use clause on copyrighted material. How does it apply to trademarks, such as logos? -Acjelen 19:57, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

The style 2 MLB userboxes

edit

I would just like to know why these userboxes were created. I was under the impression that all of the userboxes with fair use images had just had their images removed, due to the discussion above. Station Attendant 18:09, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

They should not have been created - firstly because of the fair-use images, and secondly because they do not use the "user ~" prefix. They will be removed from the page.   Deano (Talk) 18:27, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Colors

edit

I think this page is a great idea, but the colors should match those of the teams. The Cavaliers box appears greenish yellow and white rather than wine and gold to my color-blind eyes, and the Browns box is beigish brown rather than burnt orange and dark brown. Also, would it be copyvio to make little helmets to go in the left side of the userboxes? -- Mwalcoff 02:21, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

User boxes

edit

I am currently having a silly dispute over the colors and designs of the user boxes with Jeff3000. I have taken the liberty of recreating the boxes to more accurately depict the teams' colors. Supposedly the status quo is generally happy with them according to him or her. Please provide your thoughts. KnoxSGT 03:27, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes I am unhappy with the changes by KnoxSGT, as the thick border is quite ugly, as most userboxes, (non-sports included) don't use the thick border, and thus there is a clash of border styles. Secondly, some of KnoxSGT's colour changes use the logo colours as characteristic of the percentage of the colours used in general, but they not always representative of the proportion of the jersey colours. I have reverted those changes, until a discussion can be made. Note, my comments regard the NHL userboxes in particular. -- Jeff3000 03:30, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm more or less happy with what we have right now. I don't find the borders to be a big problem unless they are just too damn thick. (However, they did come in handy while editing the Anaheim Ducks userbox -- they use orange accents in addition to gold and black.) As for colours, team colours and jersey colours can be different, so I'd side with Jeff here in using the jersey colours as a standard. The only tricky part with doing that lies in the NHL. Their "vintage jersey" movement is strong in many places, leading some userboxes to switch from the modern colours to their vintage ones due to popularity (ie. Canucks' navy and maroon to green and blue). But in short, I favour using jersey colours. I hope what I just said makes sense. -→Buchanan-Hermit/?! 03:41, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I know this is tricky. I personally experimented with dozens of color changes to see what would look best for the Carolina Hurricanes. The colors are NC State red, black, and white. The red is the most important color, so I tried to focus on that. Black is the second mostly used on the team logo, but the black and red are almost always seperated by a field of white, which prevents clashing of the colors. Now on the jerseys, white is used much more than the black. The red and white go together quite nicely as words and background. So, I made the box mostly red and white and only used the black for the outline and the first words to make the team name stand out. I thought it was a nice looking userbox and others agreed. So, I guess my conclusion is that you should use the jersey colors most often for the words/background and if the third color creates a clash, then just use it for the border or something. There's a reason they design jerseys with those colors. --TinMan 15:19, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Can we get some more teams? Calgary?? WestJet 16:58, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

First off, I see that you have about half of all the userboxes available on your userpage. Anyway, to the point, you can create your own userboxes. See Wikipedia:Userboxes#Constructing a userbox. WildFan48 21:46, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Multiple Userbox designs

edit

First, I want to thank Z4ns4tsu for creating or hosting many of the NCAA userboxes. I just started to look at adding userboxes to my userpage a week or so ago and didn't find my team's userbox so I created it, and added it to the page. I also started changing the format of the page so that users can see a preview of the userboxes. I think some of the colors are off, and the logos could be improved for some of the teams (without copy-right infringement). I have seen in other userbox pages where there are multiple designs for the same subject. I don't see why we shouldn't do that here. If users want to create their own userboxes, then just add them to the page, even if a userbox for that team already exists. This way users get to pick the design they like best. Please, however, do not remove other users' userboxes; this way all the designs get to be viewed. If a user wishes, he may remove the user's own design in favor of another user's design, but should make sure that no user pages are linked to the user's own design before removing it. If there are userpages linked to their own design, post a comment on their talk page to notifying them of your design's removal and suggest using one of the other designs. Please let me know what everyone thinks of this proposed guideline. - cgilbert(talk|contribs) 21:02, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
