Forum

I considered making an economics wikiproject before, but i didnt because we already have Wikipedia:The Business and Economics Forum and Portal:Business and Economics, the forum can be closed down i think, and the material duplicated can be removed from this project. Martin - The non-blue non-moose 16:51, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

The forum can be closed down and the portal can be converted into a reader only portal just like Portal:Cricket. And we can probably start improvement drives once we have more people. pamri 17:20, September 2, 2005 (UTC)
That would be great, also, there are way too many unneeded sections in this project, it needs to be slimmed down quite a bit. Martin - The non-blue non-moose 17:33, 2 September 2005 (UTC)
Yes, the sections need to be trimmed down. BTW, why don't you register yourself as a participant? pamri 17:40, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Science pearls

Hello, Please notice this project. I hope that the List of publications in economics will be adopted by the business and economics porject. Thanks,APH 06:28, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

I have removed it from your project and added it here. Hopefully, we should find more people collaborating on it. PamriTalk 06:55, September 13, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I'll return the list to my project. This way it will give a correct view of the project and maybe people will join from there too. APH 07:23, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

Articles for the Wikipedia 1.0 project

Hi, I'm a member of the Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing using these criteria, and we are looking for A-Class and good B-Class articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Other than the featured articles, can you recommend any other suitable articles? I have so far noted Bretton Woods system, Model (economics) and Behavioral Finance. Are these A-class, publication quality in your opinion? Can you suggest others? Please post your suggestions here. Thanks a lot! Walkerma 23:04, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I will try to make a list when I get free this week. In the meanwhile, the business & economic topics list is a good start. --PamriTalk 07:37, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
I have started a list here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Business and Economics/Version 1.0 assesment. Will populate it soon. PamriTalk 07:06, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for this list, that's a wonderful start! Please also see my comments here, I have a question about Wikipedia:WikiProject Game theory. Also, I noticed some long-lasting vandalism on capitalism, etymology had become "Googoology" and also there was some duplication of sections, and probably some other things I missed. Cheers, Walkerma 15:39, 3 November 2005 (UTC) I have recently helped Actuary reach good status, and am having it undergo a peer review with the intention of bringing it to featured article candidacy. I have also nominated it for Wikipedia:Version 0.5, although it may be to narrow of scope. I think this is a good article to start the assesment. It is at least class GA, if not A. Further, any feedback on the aforementioned peer review page would be appreciated. Thanks -- Avi 20:49, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Lists of companies - proposed for deletion

I've nominated for deletion all Lists of companies type articles (collected in Lists of companies) with named exceptions and others that may be proposed. Virtually all these violate WP:NOT on potentially a number of grounds, eg: not ... a repository of links point 2: "Mere collections of internal links, except for disambiguation pages when an article title is ambiguous, and for structured lists to assist with the organisation of articles." That they do so can be seen by the fact that almost all can be, and indeed many have been, supplemented or replaced by categories. Some, however, such as List of commercial pairs, seem just pointless.

Named exceptions:

Well the deletion / categorizification proposal doesn't seem about to be accepted, but I did take one conclusion that arose and create List of missing company articles. This should do the "collect redlinks" job better than individual company lists. (I notice for example that missing company articles on these lists are not infrequently wrongly linked to something else, so you can't immediately see it's a missing article. A list designed only to have redlinks flags this problem clearly.) Rd232 talk 19:32, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

I am not sure whether its good to have it in the main namespace. It is more suited to be part of Wikipedia:Requested articles. --Pamri TalkReply 03:29, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

I've added a first draft of a sub-section description about navigational templates to the main templates section of this WikiProject's page. For a list of navigational templates for corporations that have already been created please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Business and Economics/Navigation templates. As of today I count 31 of them. Hi

I was just wondering how active this Project is. I've been doing a fair amount of economics-related work recently so I've added myself here. The Land 12:43, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi and welcome!! It is probably not as active as I would like it to be, probably because we don't have any active collaborations, etc., but I guess its fairly active. --PamriTalk 13:00, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Template: Microsoft has been proposed for deletion

Hi everyone, Template:Microsoft has been proposed for deletion at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion. The outcome of this proposal could provide a strong precedent for the deletion of most if not all of the other corporate Navigational templates listed at WikiProject Business and Economics/Navigation templates. I would urge interested Wikipedians to comment and vote on the proposal while it is active. Kurieeto 22:11, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

The outcome of discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion was 15 votes Keep, 5 votes Delete, and 1 vote Split. The template was deleted by administrator Snowspinner for allegedly violating guidelines at Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and series boxes. Kurieeto 15:28, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Updates needed

I hope this is the right place to request this. A few pages are going to be needing updates to 2005 figures, whenever these become available; these include: List of countries by GDP (nominal), List of countries by GDP (nominal) per capita, List of countries by GDP (PPP), List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita, and probably others, though these are the ones I know of at the moment. I know that I, for one, would personally appreciate someone updating the if possible.--naryathegreat | (talk) 05:29, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Request for comment please

There is some disagreement between me and another editor over the best version of the article Good (economics and accounting), please see the different versions here and here. I consider the latter one to be messy and unencyclopedic, at some point it was even given a cleanup tag. please comment! Martin 00:18, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

It would be nice if both editors showed their sources for their respective versions of the article.--Pecher 10:31, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
The shorter one is essentially an abbreviated version of the longer one, so it doesnt really matter, but I'll find some references anyway. thanks Martin 10:40, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
The current version is a compromise. IF you read the diffs, the dispute we're having is more about what a good article should look like than it is about content. The Land 17:03, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I am happy with the current version. Martin 17:07, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Naming convention for Companies and Businesses

I just wanted to draw attention and comment to on a draft poll to determine naming convention for companies and businesses. I have looked around a number of places and have only seen comments to the effect of "we should have a convention" or "do we have a convention" on how to name a XXX company. This has either the effect of drawing a few uninterested comments or a stirring up a heated debate. In either case the net result is generally zero. Your comments to help clarify this poll and later corresponding vote would be greatly appreciated. --Reflex Reaction (talk)• 16:00, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Category:Production and manufacturing

I have been trying to contribute to the Enterprise Resource Planning collection of articles, many of which are stubs, and suffer from the POV of people familiar with

 • commercial software or open source but not both
 • unsuccessful or successful implementation but not both
 • a handful of ERP software packages not representative of the whole field

I think there needs to be more categories or sub-categories for the types of computerized business applications, and a relevant portal one level down from the one on Business and Economics in general, perhaps a template that can go on the bottom of related articles that charts major interconnections. I have not yet learned how to make templates. I love to copy them, but have failed miserably at creating my own. User:AlMac|(talk) 18:48, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Naked short selling

I happened upon this page and attempted some dispute resolution, but I think the page could still use quite a bit of expert attention. As a result of semiprotection, a possible POV fork of similar content has been created at Failure To Deliver Shares (FTD) which should also be... dealt with somehow. I can resolve conflicts and point people to WP:RS, WP:CITE, and so forth, but I don't know enough about the substantive issues to be really helpful. (ESkog)(Talk) 05:04, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Uranium Market

Hi all, I edit in nuclear technology and nuclear energy topics almost exclusively. While working on the fuel side of the story I started an article on the uranium market, a rather strange market from what I have read on the subject in the last few days. While I'm confident on my knowledge of the sci/tech part of this field I am pathetically weak in the economic side. Thus it occurred to me that my market article might have some glaring errors or omissions, (I fear I might have use some financial term inappropriatly, for example) and also I may have put it in the wrong categories as well. If one of you B.Comm-types would give it a quick look over and deal with any embarrassments I might have made there I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance, --DV8 2XL 15:16, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Currency depreciation

I'm posting here to request help from more knowledgeable people... There was a discussion about the meaning of "devaluation" and "depreciation" in Talk:Argentine Currency Board. I've written a stub depreciation (currency) and fixed devaluation, but it'd be nice to receive input from editors who have expertise in these matters and can certify the correct usage of these terms and help flesh out/fix both articles. The current Depreciation article, of course, is not about currency depreciation (and my basic accounting knowledge tells me they're completely unrelated). Thanks in advance. —Pablo D. Flores (Talk) 12:38, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

You are correct. Devaluation is deliberate, and occurs when there is a fixed rate of exchange between currencies (when one is pegged to the other). Depreciation occurs when there is a floating exchange rate (determined by market forces) and the market values one less, leading to what is termed depreciation. See for example 1 --BramleyBarn 21:06, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Help on an article

Hello everyone! The article Return of premium life insurance was brought to my attention earlier this evening. What looked like Wikispam to begin with actually looks somewhat salvageable, but I don't know the first thing about insurance policies. Can someone here with a decent critical eye take a look at it? Thanks. --badlydrawnjeff (WP:MEMES?) 01:21, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

The article on the Clearing and Settlement division of Deutsche Boerse, Clearstream, currently consists of accusations about the firm, based mainly on the story of a disgruntled employee who was sacked more than 25 years ago. All accusations have been proven to be false in the courts. This is clearly not reflected in the article. Can anyone could shed an objective light on this company? 20:54, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Economic democracy

Help is needed on the economic democracy article. The existing page was devoted to J. W. Smith - this text can be moved as currently suggested, but even what remains is somewhat idiosyncratic. There is also an Economic Democracy page on another particular person's writing. Some Google searching shows there seems to be a fair amount of usage in socialist and/or marxist circles dating back to the early 20th century, as well as C. H. Douglas' book, etc., and more books in the last 30 years. Anyone out there capable of writing a good set of overview paragraphs as to the main usage of this term for the article? I'm going to create a companion disambiguation page, but I really don't know enough to write much more. - David Oberst 04:28, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Please help with Unemployment

I put unreferenced and POV-check tags on Unemployment, and did some minor edits. It's an important topic, and could do with some attention. Unfortunately I didn't even do economics at high school, so I won't be doing serious editing here. This article, by one of Australia's most respected economics writers, refers to the OECD Employment Outlook 2006. According to the journalist, the OECD is moving back from its advocacy of labor market deregulation, saying that there's no impact on regulations such as minimum wage, and unemployment. I was hoping to learn more about it in the unemployment article... but twas not to be, and the OECD report is a fairly heavy reading for a non-economic type. Thanks --Singkong2005 (t - c - WPID) 16:30, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Further splits from econ-stub

This stub type is very oversized, and is highly in need of being sorted to existing subtypes, or having more proposed and created. I'm currently doing some number-crunching on this (and some other categories) to see which of the permanent categories are likely to have at least 60 stubs by way of potential population, but more insight as to which categories correspond most naturally to primary notability of topics, and are most likely to see expansion by specialists in given areas, would be highly useful. If anyone here has any insight (or offers of lots of manual labour), it'd be most welcome. Alai 06:18, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

A quick look suggests two potential subcats witch would get many stubs are Financial instruments (to include securities, derivatives and analytic tools for these instruments) and Economic Institutions. However, I have no idea what is the procedure for creating these, but if you fill like going ahead leave a note here and I might give a hand.
Another suggestion would be to have a Econometrics stubs subcat, as currently all econometrics stubs go into Statistics stubs. However, they are far closer to economists and should be here, as no statistician cares about the subjects enough to work on the stubs. AdamSmithee 12:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay: this wasn't one of the more straightforward to analyse, not helped by it being a subject I'm not at all familiar with. I've now made a set of proposals here; please comment there. Alai 05:32, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Unsourced garbage

I created this page (Total personal income) shortly after I created my account here, and it continues to be a source of embarassment for me. I had no idea what I was talking about-- I wrote the article after about an hour of surfing the web for sources, none of which I cited. I guess I assumed that others would eventually contribute to the article, but there have only been minor edits in the last (almost) 2 years. I still have no idea whether this article is accurate at all. I'm troubled that it's the source of the first (and second) hit when "total personal income" is googled. Before I delete most of the article and replace it with a one-sentence stub ("Total Personal Income" is the value most often used to calculate per capita income."), is there anyone who knows what they're talking about who can take a look at this and fix it up? QuixoticKate 17:58, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Local Exchange Trading Systems & Local currency

Local Exchange Trading Systems & Local currency look like they could do with a lot more substance. Possibly they should be merged into Local currency? It would be good, to have more on:

 • Advantages & disadvantages,
 • History of their use (I heard a story about a local currency having great success in Austria, I think, in the Great Depression, and subsequently being banned as it was seen as a threat to the national financial system) and
 • Why legal hurdles were put up against them

I know little about economics, so I'll be content to just point things out, and not do much editing. --Singkong2005 talk 03:09, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Erection index added and could use review?

This is bordering on stridently silly, but I have heard this term used since the 1970s and in my opinion it has some validity even though it is rather vague. I would appreciate honest and reasonable review of the erection index page that I put together. Comprehensive Annual Financial Report

Can anyone with competence in public finance write an article on this subject? A previous version was deleted for blatant spam and is now up at WP:AfD. ~ trialsanderrors 20:41, 21 September 2006 (UTC) Annon Edditer here: I re-wrote a concise sourced article (especially compared to alot I have seen on wikipedial) citing the GAO government accounting office's own history page as to how this is supposed to replace the "Off-the-books" reports for "enterprise funds" that existed prior to the 1950's as well as a PDF State of Tennosee document that was pertaining to the topic that gave copywright permission. This is what was called for in the discussion as to the articles flaws. I spent the time to find and read and understand the history of how this report came into existance and why. To argue that it is not significant when every division of government (and government corporate entities) is/are supposed to compile one and make it available to the public (whether or not they can understand it) is something I cant find the words to decribe in the catagory of ignor-ance.

I have to ask myself why this page is being so nit picked. If you had a problem with the "surpluses" section that I reworked from the previous edit that was referred to with all the HTML junk (copied I also suspect) and I also linked to the article for "crony capitalism"

and corporatism; This has become so cartoonish ,one thing I regret is not linking this to the General Motors streetcar conspiracy and Who framed Roger Rabbit conspiracy that is an example of the type of cooruption that this CAFR process was supposed to curtail where governmet is manipulated by corporations and vice versa.

Clearly just giving the government side of the CAFR would be NPOV? So, what SPAM is being referred to? Are all the other articles linked to besides CARFman.com SPAM? Even the Week-pedia links? NO, this is some sort of pet peeve topic for those teaming up to squash it OR you are a defacto corporatism agent, volunteer or not. There are a mirad of "conspiracy theory" topics that need much much more refinement than this little artical and it aint THEORY its verifiable; How much freee advertisment is given to the products of big corporations like the rodger wabbit film???

Over n out fer now hill-billies...

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 21:19, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Employee stock option

Hi, can I ask someone from this project to take a look at Employee stock option? [Retail Investor has now twice removed tags I put on it saying that it is confusing and POV, and on its talk page he is making a case that, if I read it correctly, says that if something bad in the article isn't his personal fault then I shouldn't object to it (or something like that; it's a bit, well, confusing); there may be a bit of WP:OWN going on here. A typical example of his remarks is "I did not input these arguments. They were already on the page in different places. They were not considered 'uncited' then, probably because the arguments are in every newspaper." If they are "in every newspaper", then it should be possible to find citation. And I would hope I am not somehow required to have reviewed the article for problems earlier to raise problems with the article as it currently stands. Anyway, I'll duck out of it for a month or so, since he has for some reason decided that my comments are directed against him personally and not at the article, but someone should fix this mess. It's a reasonably important article. - Jmabel | Talk 02:46, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

By the way, I see from his edit summary that he is objecting to the fact that I am criticizing rather than editing. I don't believe there is any requirement that I work on every single article I look at. If I were to remove the uncited material from this article, there would be approximately nothing left. - Jmabel | Talk 01:33, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Is there a way to get the current stock price on the main page of a company that is public? John R G 06:41, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

The Main Page of Wikipedia? or Portal:Business and Economics? Nishkid64 19:17, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Lets use United States Basketball League as an example. You can see that it is a publically traded company with the ticker symbol. What I am trying to figure out is how can you put the current price on the page also without having to click on a link or update it. John R G 06:41, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Experts required

Hey folks. Just want to make sure you're aware of this page: Category:Pages needing expert attention from Economics experts. Cool? Cool. :)

Business navigational box categories

I have tried to get an answer at this post in [[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)#Business_navigational_box_categories|village pump]. It seems that the vast majority of Business navigational boxes only have one category: WikiProject Business/Archive 1. I am attempting to go back and make my contributions conform to the wiki norms. I feel it is odd that categories like the additional ones I have added to Template:Wrigley are not more common in other nav boxes. What is standard policy? TonyTheTiger 18:47, 29 November 2006 (UTC) There is a big discussion going on right now about categories. They are suppose to aid collaboration, not necessarily to categorise an article or be an aid in searching for it. The categories have gone somewhat out of control and their initial purpose has been been neglected. The big problem is in what way do you create categories. If their initial purpose was to aid collaboration, the question you need to ask is how will adding a new category help?. You need to go to this area 2 and read all about everything. Categories is in there somewhere. I don't know, but would like to know how official standards and policy can be enforced or made agreed policy. It's no easy job. Requesting help with articles on financial and investing terms

I've spent some time over the last few days revising and debating the entry for Enterprise Value. Retail Investor had made some changes that, in my opinion, violated the Wikipedia norms of NPOV, original research and unsourced information. I decided to look a little deeper into this user's activity and have come across quite a few entries which have suffered a similar fate to the article I have been working on. Some of these include links back to Retail Investor's personal website. Here are some examples:

I hate to single out this contributor, but I've found that there are a lot of misunderstandings and/or opinions in his/her articles and contributions. And no attempt to source whatsoever. Further, I want to point out that there are plenty of contributions made by this user that are correct and helpful, but it is hard to distinguish what is good from what is wrong/misguided unless you already have a deep understanding of the subject matter. I don't have the time to fully engage in this, so I'd like to see what the community thinks.mullacc 01:51, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Undervaluing gifts

I was looking for information on the idea that a gift tends not to be valued as much as something that a person has bought with their hard-earned money. (Gift paradox?) I'm not sure what it's called, or how much there is to say about it, but it would be good if there was something on it at the Gift article. --Singkong2005 · talk 14:25, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Business and Economics Template

Is there a WikiProject Business and Economics Template to put on talk pages? Please reply to my talk page. TonyTheTiger 20:28, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

After talking with User:TonyTheTiger, I put this banner together ( - see code at template:Bus&Econ). I had orginally included BASEPAGENAME at the beginning, in place of "this article", but I chose to remove it. What does the community think; comments, suggestions? - Sam 00:07, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Deletion of S&P, Forutne-, Forbes-, etc. categories

Should all categories such as Category:S&P 500, Category:Fortune 1000, Category:Forbes 2000, Forbes 400, etc. be deleted due to them being published lists and potential copyright violations, or should any of them be kept due to their notability? There's a CfD at Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_December_2#Category:Forbes_2000. Shawnc 22:14, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Removal of people from Indian economists category

User:202.54.18.155 has been removing people from the category as can be seen in their contibutions. They are basing this on the definition that they wrote here which I removed. However, I don't have enough knowledge in this area to be able to say if the editors actions are correct or not. So I bring it here for someone else to sort out. Thanks. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:57, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Corporate nav boxes

Why do these include directors? This tends to add a bunch of redlinks and size and not much information. Directors should just be listed in the main article; they don't need to show up in everything else related. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 18:53, 31 December 2006 (UTC
