This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. Changing to task force of WikiProject California

I think this project should be switched to a task force, at least in the template sense of the word. I've been going through Category:Unassessed California articles, and noticed that articles like Talk:Imperial Beach, California and Talk:Monterey Park, California are showing as unassessed even if they are assessed within the {{WikiProject California}} because they use the {{WikiProject Southern California}} banner. Based on the overlap in templates, and what appears to be a lack of general activity in both the WP:CAL and WP:SOCAL projects I think this project should be converted into a task force of WP:WikiProject California.

This would involve

1. Using the recently added parameters to {{WikiProject California}}, which take arguments for if it is part of WikiProject Southern California and if so, what priority.
2. Using a bot to replace all usages of {{WikiProject Southern California}} with a corresponding WP Cal template usage, and bot-assisted assessment where one doesn't already exist.

I would also suggest also merging the membership lists, holding most discussions on WT:CAL, and several other resource merges. My main concern though is the overlap in unassessed pages. If someone wants to go through and assess the pages or tweak the templates that is fine by me, but judging on the level of activity on this talk page I don't think this project is very active. -Optigan13 (talk) 08:34, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

To clarify, you would replace WikiProject Southern California template with the California-wide template having Southern California Task force identified? Also, I think there are some reasons to keep SoCal separate from Cal-wide, at least as a Task Force, not merge it away altogether. SoCal is very different, separated from NoCal, and both are larger than most other U.S. states. But, overall, I don't mind having some merger of functions like assessment which can be shared state-wide, although identifying the SoCal ones in their separate task force. doncram (talk) 08:59, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I would be replacing WikiProject Southern California template with the California-wide template having Southern California Task force identified. See the articles I mentioned for how that would look. Also, yes there are reasons to keep the a SOCAL project separate from other regions of California, but if there isn't anyone using the SOCAL talk page or other facilities there's no real benefit to having an unwatched/unread page. -Optigan13 (talk) 23:51, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Idea regarding task force

None of the various todo lists appear to have been updated in a while. Personally I liked them in the past, but at this point a post to a project talk page is more productive, otherwise we've got a host of templates to place on the article itself, which a bot will pick up. Cities vs Regions in Portal:Southern California/Cities/Top

I am suggesting that Portal:Southern California/Cities be changed to my older version because:

1. I (dont know about other users) could not even read the things he had w/his poor pictures, they blocked the words! I changed them to "thumbs")
2. I added the metro because they summarize the regions where the cities are, so why cant we have that? I relates to the cities, its not like I'm puting types of cars in the section, where that has nothing to do with cities in SoCal. Someone reading about the cities in SoCal might want to know SoCals largest metropolitan areas, where which city is located in the mega-region we call Southern California.
3. Why did he have three cities w/a lot of information and the rest with none? Some metro are anchored by two cities not just one. For exampe the Inland Empire, Riverside and San Bernardino are equally as important to one another, the IE centers around both cities not just Riverside, the IE article says so it self.
4. To me the pictures look better as thumbs rather than having them being posted there. Now if you though the pictures were to small, we can make them bigger correct?

Naming of San Diego neighborhoods

For those interested in San Diego: there is a discussion now going on at Talk:Allied Gardens, San Diego, California about the style of naming to be used for neighborhoods of San Diego. Currently that style is Point Loma, San Diego, California; two proposals under discussion would change it to Point Loma (the primary proposal) or Point Loma, San Diego (the alternate proposal). --MelanieN (talk) 16:03, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Orange County redirect?

I am aware that this issue was decided back in 2006, HOWEVER, I would like to bring up the possibility of having Orange County redirect to Orange County, California and create a disambiguation page for the others. The most famous Orange County is the one in California, an it's not even close. When traveling around the United States or abroad, I say I am from Orange County and people immediately know where I am from, no one asks "which one?" Also, if Orange County is to be lumped together with all other counties of the same name, then we should do the same for the many different cities and locales that go by Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, or even California (there is a California, Pennsylvania). The list has a section with a header for inactive. I moved them there last time I did a cleanup, then used WP:AWB to leave Wikipedia:WikiProject_California/Templates#Rollcall on the user talk pages. That was when I was doing the project-> task force merge, and moving to inactive seemed less likely to ruffle any feathers. But if you want to do a full on removal of the names, or tweak that template that would be fine, as the history will still have them. Baja California

Scene Baja California doesn't have it's own project, any objections to tacking it on to this project, at least for now, per this discussion. In addition to the reasons given in that discussion, the vast majority of the Baja population lives just south of the border (more specifiably in a strip extending from the border to 15 miles south of the border, consisting of the cities of Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada tough that's south of the 15 mile strip, Tecate, and Rosarito Beach, see also Municipalities of Baja California and List of Baja California cities).

Also the Southern California metropolitan area of San Diego–Tijuana is on both sides of the border. The topics of (the inhabited bit of) Baja and Southern California are pretty havaly integrated anyway. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 22:48, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Mexico doesn't have projects for it's states, it just has one big Mexico project, I think that that's because of a lack of activity at Mexico. I'm not proposing a whole new project here, I'm proposing expanding this one. Considering how integrated the history of the Californians is, and particularly how integrated the topics of Southern California and the inhabited bit of Baja are, it just seems like this project would be better suited to handle Baja stuff then the big Mexico project would be.
