New York State Comptroller Building

If anyone knows where to find the height of the NYS Comptroller Building on State Street in Albany please let me know, I have several sources with lots of information on this building and would like to create an article on it, but one thing I'm missing is its height! Emporis does not list it. Hopefully someone here has some thoughts on where to look or researching secrets they can pass on. Thanks!Camelbinky (talk) 15:19, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Not sure that will work very well; you can't really report in Wikipedia on your own personal interview with someone. I was not familiar with the {{cite interview}} template before; it looks useful for reporting about televised interviews of a person by a TV reporter, as in the examples it gives. But certainly you could call and try to get the facts, and at the same time ask them how they know those facts. If they point to a book of Albany architecture or some reference source, that is leading you to primary or secondary sources in writing which can indeed be used (with appropriate care). What about city building department file information, permit information, though? You could perhaps go into the appropriate city office and get access to specific building file info. It would be easier if this is compiled in some book by the city permits / building office though. Have fun with it! --doncram (talk) 02:38, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh, this is getting more complicated! Looks like I may have to wait until I can be physically in Albany in August and do as you suggest in person. It's a state owned building but even the state has to file permits and follow city regulations I would assume, so you're right there must be some information in the city/county hall of records or the city building department.Camelbinky (talk) 21:51, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Harry Blatner, capital region architect

Hi, i wonder if anyone has any references to Henry L. Blatner, whose Modern Movement-style Clarksville Elementary School (Clarksville, New York) seems interesting. The NRHP listing document for the school doesn't have a whole bio about him, as they often do for single listings about an architect, but it mentions he went on to be a big success as an architect in the Albany / Capital Region area. I would be very glad if anyone here would like to contribute to either of those articles and/or take help take one or both towards DYK if that seems warranted. Perhaps something like "Did you know that Harry Blatner's rural, 1949 Clarksville Elementary School presaged many green design principles such as bilateral lighting now in vogue?" --doncram (talk) 16:18, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Blatner is also one of the architects of the Empire State Plaza and must have been involved in many other major projects in Albany area. If anyone has any general books on architecture of the area, it would be very helpful if you could look him up. Thanks! --doncram (talk) 17:17, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I appreciate the help of User:Acroterion in developing the Henry L. Blatner article, help which i invited separately from here. Otherwise, i haven't seen any editors here actually supporting the development of Albany County NRHP articles. That's okay, we're all volunteers and no one has to do anything. But, i'm ending my own efforts to develop them, which i was undertaking as part of an intended drive, discussed on this Talk page previously. I developed about 9 articles, many early in the long list-article and others sharing the Guilderland MPS document which came up in some of the early ones. I didn't take them very far, just started them and formed the NRHP document references and added a bit about the significance of the place. Anyhow, i'm done, and the drive was a bust, but no biggie. I completely rewrote the Washington Park Historic District (Albany, New York) and SUNY System Administration Building articles and created Van Ostrande-Radliff House and I've begun working on an article for the South End-Groesbeckville Historic District; I'm trying my best but I tend to work on what I happen to be learning for my own enjoyment, Wikipedia is a by-product of what I love to learn and read about and what I'd be doing anyways, so my work tends to be a bit jumpy on which article I'm working on and if I "finish" it. I, too, appreciate your efforts. The past few weeks I've been working on a complete rewrite of Albany, New York, which I'd like to bring to FA status (I think I'm reasonably close; only two or three more sections need work). Unfortunately, bringing articles to FA doesn't really meld well with getting a large number of smaller articles started. It's a difference in goals, is all. Perhaps to clarify, I was referring to working on the Albany County (outside of Albany the city) NRHP list, at National Register of Historic Places listings in Albany County, New York (rather than National Register of Historic Places listings in Albany, New York, which includes the 3 or 4 articles that Camelbinky refers to). If you haven't noticed, Albany, New York is currently being rewritten. Please feel free to help out if you can. We are looking to get things sourced mainly, but new prose is also necessary. "Albany Collection" template on Commons

I have created a template called {{AlbanyNY}} on Commons (link), which adds a box to images and files stating that it is party of the "Albany, New York Collection". It adds these images to a central category. Since commons:Category:Albany, New York is really meant to be a meta category with few images and many subcategories, this "collection" serves as a one-stop shopping point. It also entices the viewer to peruse our collection of Albany-related images. This template is meant to be the first thing you see on an Albany-related image. It is not meant to be used on images from areas outside the city limits. As you upload images from Albany (even historical ones), please add this template so people (especially locals) can enjoy the range of photos we have of the city. Capital District articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Grand Union Hotel & Happy to help

Hi, I hope this is the right place to write. I recently greatly expanded/completely re-wrote the article on the Grand Union Hotel in Saratoga Springs. It's a long article but very comprehensive. I still need to figure out how to upload photos; I have a ton of photos to add to this page. Would it be a good article to nominate for the "Did you know...?" page? I also created a page on Gideon Putnam (founder of Saratoga Springs). I need to add birth/death dates of all his children, which I'll do next time I head over to the historian's office. Awesome! The Gideon Putnam article can go for DYK and the Grand Union if it is 5x longer in prose than it was before. I believe you have five days in order to nominate it so you should nominate it quickly. Upload photos at the Commons, you can follow the links to there from the upload file link in the toolbox (I use the old look of Wikipedia, the new skin may have things placed differently) if you have questions look up User:Zoofari's user page there or ask User:UpstateNYer here at Wikipedia. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. If someone is in the area of Menands, New York and can drop by the Albany Rural Cemetery, I'd like to get a photo of a gravestone for William Bliss Baker, who is apparently buried there. I don't have any idea, but they may have a directory of some sort there. I live almost 2000 miles away from there, so I don't have any way to easily check. Shopping Centers

In April, a user put suggested notices for deletion on articles about several major shopping centers in the Capital Region such as Westgate Plaza, Stuyvesant Plaza, Mohawk Commons, and others, as being "non-notable." They are all linked within the shopping center link for the Capital District at the end of each area shopping center article. These articles have tens of sources from major local newspapers in the Capital District. According to the individual's user page, he is from Pennsylvania and focuses on PA, MD, and other areas in that region. He is not familiar with the NY Capital Region and the history of these places. The same individual was for the deletion of Latham Circle, which is also significant to our area's history.

It should be noted that another user removed the deletion suggestions, citing the number of sources. However, this could and probably will come up again.

As a (now former -- move was very recent) Capital District resident who spent decades in the area and still has connections, causing me to frequently return, I recognize the importance of these places to our history and continued use today. I will continue to try to add to these articles as time permits but I would also encourage others to do so in order to preserve them. More importantly, the case should be made within the articles as to WHY they are important. These are large shopping centers and to the people in the area, they have meaning, importance, and history. I can fully understand that someone from outside the area has no recognition of their significance. Likewise, if we were looking at that individual's area we too might make the same kind of mistake about something he and his neighbors consider significant.

@UpstateNYer: As a "lifer" here (born Troy, 1966), very much enjoyed viewing all the Albany+ content you've posted to Wikipedia! As a native, just wanted to express gratitude and say thank you for documenting this so well. I'm wrapping the Clifton Park *Wikipedia Loves Libraries* event now, and am thinking it would great if folks like ourselves could meet in-person on a regular basis, and share experience, advice and company, at a venue like Panera Bread at Latham Farms. I know this Panera hosts other social media and engineering groups (IEEE, Peter Coombs, etc.), so Wikipedians in the Albany region could certainly do the same. Dongan Charter

Having a bit of anrgument about the wording in this article, the article originally claimed it was the oldest charter in the Western Hemisphere, this term is often misused to mean the Americas, when parts of England & Scotland & SPain and all of Wales, Ireland & Portugal are in the Western Hemisphere. NOt to mention portions of Africa. I forst changed Western Hemisphere to Americas that was reverted. I then removed West Hemisphere, it was reinstated by the same user. If some one could have a look before a revert war brakes out.--Kitchen Knife (talk) 21:18, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

I suspect that the source means the Americas, but I'm not sure that the examples you've provided contradict it, because of the words "possibly" and "still in force". At least one of the charters you've mentioned is Liverpool's 1207 charter, which is usually described as its first charter, implying that there has been at least one since then - and many of the charters in England appear to have been superseded in around 1685 and again more recently, such as in the 1970s local government reforms. A search doesn't find confirmation of anything older, but it may be that there is but the research hasn't been done, or hasn't been published online, or isn't easy to find online. The claim was made by "Stefan Bielinski, author of Government by the People a 64-page book written to mark Albany's Tricentennial", so I'd say if it's to be included this should be attributed within the article. A discussion was started much earlier than this at the WP:NOR/N which is the proper place for a community discussion, not here, which this wikiproject has not been all that active (and that for possible conflict of interest purposes I'll admit- I co-founded this wikiproject). I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Capital District to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Latham Circle Mall

Latham Circle Mall needs some serious updating. It seems that for the past 10-15 years, the updates have been sporadic. With the mall totally demolished and now rebuilt, the article needs some love. On my last look, I saw that the new stores were being listed one at a time with the "as of" such-and-such a date. When I can take a breath I'll try and get started on this, but I'd love some help! User script to detect unreliable sources

Main page: User:Headbomb/unreliable

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
