West Coast Gypsy jazz

I've PRODded the West Coast Gypsy jazz article. The article had been flagged in Sept. 2011 for having no references. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 21:36, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Articles for Deletion

About the article: Kiss Me, Kate (album):

Correction within this article is needed. "The Kiss Me, Kate (album)" Wikipedia article is identified as an album by Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae and released on the Columbia Records label in 1949. However, the ACTUAL Kiss Me, Kate album by Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae, with its own album cover, was released on the Capitol Records label in 1950. The album cover currently pictured on the "Kiss Me, Kate (album)" Wikipedia article is actually the album cover of the Kiss Me, Kate Original Broadway Cast album released on the Columbia Records label in 1949 (soon after the original Broadway opening). Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae were not among the 1948 original cast and, therefore, are not on the original cast album which features Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang as the leads with the rest of the original cast members appearing in their respective roles on the album. This article needs to be corrected either by changing the album cover to show the actual Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae Kiss Me, Kate album cover, or by changing the text to reflect the original Broadway cast who actually appear on the album currently pictured on the "Kiss Me, Kate (album)" Wikipedia article. ```` — Preceding unsigned comment added by ALOHARONN (talkcontribs) 19:59, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Jazz contrafacts

Bien amicalement,

Robin Nicaise — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.22.92.34 (talk) 21:15, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

(I believe the above meant: "Looking through List of jazz contrafacts, I saw the piece "Celia" by Bud Powell is considered a contrafact of "I Got Rhythm." I would say that the chords of "Celia" are not the same as "I Got Rhythm" so it is not a contrafact.")
The best place for this would be at Talk:List of jazz contrafacts. Looking at some charts of this tune, I'm not quite sure "Celia" is based of off "I Got Rhythm". Eman235/talk 23:04, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Women in Jazz

Thought I would drop by and let this wikiproject know there's a page called Women in Jazz that sorely needs some work on it. I think many members would be interested in it. Cheers! Turn➦ 00:48, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Jazz calender

I wondered if somebody would be interested in compiling a jazz calender of when festivals are typically held. It would be good to see what the options are over the year period and what is held in each month etc.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:10, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Articles for deletion

Proposed deletion of Bop rock and Bop metal

The articles Bop rock and Bop metal have been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Appear to be neologisms. No sources, and nothing that isn't already covered in Jazz fusion (or the Jazz-rock section therein). These could each be turned into redirects to that article, except that the terms aren't really used in any notable context.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the articles to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Fair use for music score of jazz standards?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I've been adding a few excerpts of jazz standard scores with Lilypond - for example Giant Steps. A few questions:

  1. Is what I'm doing so far ok, within fair use?
  2. Would it be ok to include the whole standard?

Jazz standards seem a bit tricky because the difference between "the composition" and "the recording" is enormous, and is where much (most?) of "the art" is. Stevage 15:24, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

I would agree with you that the recording is where most of the art it, but Copyright Laws Must Be Followed, and a lead sheet is therefore copyright infringement unless licensed. I'd say that the first four bars of a tune is acceptable -- we have audio clips of copyrighted songs elsewhere.
But the whole tune would not be acceptable, unless it was PD. Eman235/talk 15:45, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

Keith Jarrett: citations/verification

There are a multitude of problems with references, important facts which are unverified, quotations with no inline citation, opinions from sources which are not named or referenced. An artist of the caliber of Keith Jarrett should be presented according to the guidelines including WP:VER. Of course, all content must be referenced, however it is even more important on a high volume article such as this. One editor has already made a start, to his credit. Jazz standards

A severe lack of quality articles on jazz standards. Some of the really core ones like Body and Soul, Summertime, Autumn Leaves, Night and Day, On Green Dolphin Street, Stella by Starlight etc should really be up to GA standard by now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:00, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Eh...SOFIXIT? I do agree, these articles could use much improvement, and I've been meaning to do something for a while now. Nature Boy is the only one I can think of that's gotten to GA. Eman235/talk 19:53, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
You misunderstand what I'm saying. It's an attempt to attract to people to help me improve some of them, not trashing the articles of the project.. I think Body and Soul really needs to be brought up to GA status in particular.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:16, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
I'd be glad to help, though I've never done a GA before. Perhaps EddieHugh would be interested as well? Eman235/talk 19:16, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld and I had a brief discussion of jazz standards a few months ago on my talk page. I'm concentrating on pianists for now (or will be when I have time), but could help out a little, probably more with suggestions and prose editing to prepare for GAR rather than adding much content. EddieHugh (talk) 13:59, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

I might consider getting a copy of this, that might help some of the articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:32, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Speaking of which, I happen to have a copy of this, which will probably come in useful.
How do you plan to begin improving "Body and Soul"? Eman235/talk 02:03, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
