Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Martial arts/Karate task force

Wikipedia:WikiProject Karate Created

edit

Please add topics here to discuss the formation of this new WikiProject. As Karate has well over 4000 associated articles it is a large topic that has no active community of editors and this page can hopefully address that. If you are interested in helping to develop this community and the content here please post below and add your name to the participants list. Mountaincirque 14:24, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Potential interest in supporting/joining new WikiProject Karate?

edit

Dear editors associated with Karate, I have edited pages with some of you in the past and some of your names I have taken from WP:WikiProject Martial Arts, WP:WikiProject Japan and Karate-related talk pages. I have just proposed a WikiProject Karate at: Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Wikipedia:WikiProject Karate, and the page itself is live at WP:WikiProject Karate as a proposal currently until we confirm if there is enough interest and energy. There are more details of the aims and goals at the proposal page and WikiProject page.

I realise that there is a WP:WikiProject Martial Arts (which seems quite quiet) but Karate is such a large topic with three to four thousand mainspace articles I feel that it needs more attention and a clear to-do list to target key articles and work as a team. This is chance to contribute to the development of new WikiProject that will be increasingly important in the lead up to Karate's inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

I'm flattered by the invitation, but I have no particular interest in karate over and above any other martial art, and hence would prefer to work under the auspices of WikiProject Martial Arts' umbrella rather than under specific sub-projects (which is why I'm not a member of the Sumo, Boxing or MMA sub-projects either). While karate may not be my personal thing, it's an art I respect and I wish you luck with this proposal. Yunshui  10:50, 23 June II2017 (UTC)
Many thanks for your support in any case, I saw you in the WikiProject Japan lists with a note on martial arts so thought I would reach out. Mountaincirque 10:59, 23 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't really know much about karate. I occasionally will edit an associated article, but it's usually just copyediting. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:59, 23 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

I made some suggestions if anyone is interested see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Wikipedia:WikiProject Karate. Dwanyewest (talk) 02:28, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comments, perfect for items to add to the project to do list to focus editors efforts on gaps. Please sign your support on the proposal page :) Mountaincirque · Join WikiProject Karate? 10:35, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the invitation! I will look at it over the next few days. I be traveling. TheDoctorX (talk) 06:17, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @TheDoctorX: let us know what you think and if you have any ideas to add? Mountaincirque · Join WikiProject Karate? 10:35, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
One thing that would be nice would be more critical references for the history of various styles. I understand that such may not exist.TheDoctorX (talk) 05:49, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm on wikibreak, and will be going to graduate school in the fall, so I'm not sure how much time I'll have in the near future. I haven't attended karate classes in a few years now, either. But, I am very interested in this and I am willing to help start up this project.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 04:21, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @3family6: and for joining the proposal, I think if we can get a group of 5-10 editors and go from there we should have the critical mass to begin and hopefully attract more participants as we go. Mountaincirque · Join WikiProject Karate? 10:35, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the invitation. Another editor, a self-proclaimed Shihan in Uechi-ryū karate, made a hash of the Isshin-ryū karate page. He squatted there and reverted edits, etc., ignoring multiple sources in the interest of a single magazine article favoring his own bias. I no longer edit Wikipedia pages due to that unpleasant and unproductive experience, but I hope someone will rectify the bias still mucking up the page on Isshin-ryu a full year later. I wish you success in your work during this exciting time for karate, but I would caution you to be especially wary of derogatory claims against masters not of an editor’s own style. Best of luck! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Billyinthedarbies (talkcontribs) 02:03, 16 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry it took me so long to response back to you. Thank you for thinking I could be a part of this. If there is anything I can do. Because I have studied several styles of Karate, I'm open-minded to all martial arts. I haven't studied a pure, traditional style of Japanese Karate, but the styles I've studied based on them did have the foundation of the traditional Japanese styes they were based on. I will try to be of any help I can.

The difficulty in documenting martial arts to the level required for Wikipedia references springs to mind. There is a lot of informal documentation but published book references are harder to find. For example, older books on Japanese karate do not show kicking above the waste. I've heard from instructors who were there that Jae Joon Kim taught Mas Oyama how to do the Tae Kwon Do style Korean high kicks with a hip rotation after one of the Asian games. I do know that later versions of Japanese books include high kicks. But documenting the connection to Wikipedia standards with references will be hard. I will try to contribute when I can although most of my older references are deep in storage. I'm interested in the historical flow of ideas. There is a main historical sequence for karate. China-> Okinawa (Te=hand)->Japan(Kara=China) te)-> Japan(Kara=empty te) -> Korea (tang=China Soo= hand) but at each step along the way additions were made. It would be strange if elements of aikijitsu from Japan were not of influence. Each "karate" has it's own creation myth and many original authors were unwilling to ascribe origins across the Japanese-Korean boundary because of historical enmity. Techniques and differences are not difficult to describe but documented references are hard to find EdEveridge (talk) 12:30, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Karate Task Force created, please convert your support to participation!

edit

Dear supporters of this proposal, @Yunshui, 3family6, Dwanyewest, TheDoctorX, Nihonjoe, Scottalter, and Dr.khatmando: thanks for your support, the consensus moved towards setting this up as a task force under WP:WPMA and listed under WP:Japan also. Please add yourselves as participants if you have not done so already and if you know other editors who this task force may be relevant to then please tag them here or send them a note.

I will add some of the proposed main tasks to the to do box on the page. I warmly encourage you all to edit and expand the content on the page here, for any major changes or suggestions please post here on the talk page. First month of this task force - August 2017 Comment

edit

Thanks to those that have joined as participants of this new task force! It is great to have a place where we can address Karate-specific issues, highlight key tasks to be prioritised and form a [small] community of Wikipedians who have knowledge in this area.

My recommendations to keep the momentum going:

  1. Please add your name to the participants list if you have not done so already and note any basic specialism you have so that other editors can contact you as a resource.
  2. Please post details of any Karate-related work you are planning on the talk page and/or the 'to do' list on the main task force page.
  3. Invite other editors you know or come across to join the page.

Please be WP:BOLD when contributing to this page and community, it will do best with as many contributions from the group as possible! Do work with the wider WP:MARTIAL and WP:Japan communities also who are our new parents.

All the best and comments below very welcome, Mountaincirque · Join the Karate Task Force? 10:16, 17 August 2017 (UTC).Reply

I don't know if anyone is paying attention Mountaincirque but there is a Karate in Japan, Karate in the United Kingdom and I have started a debate whether American Karate should be merged into Karate in the United States. Dwanyewest (talk) 11:24, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Is there a way of tracking if a new karate article is being made?

edit

In case anyone is interested here are some new ones to emerge Karate in India, Vernon Bell among a few others? Dwanyewest (talk) 15:17, 21 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Dwanyewest: I have drafted an article on Japan Karate Shoto Federation which is awaiting review here: User:Enreh/sandbox
It would be great if there was a tool to help identify new articles on a topic of interest 🤔 Enreh (talk) 09:39, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Enreh I agree it would be helpful if there were some way we could track new karate articles in order to improve them. I think a tracking system needs to be created. Dwanyewest (talk) 09:43, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Things I think need improving

edit

This is a group Karate related articles I think need improving what are people's thoughts? Dwanyewest (talk) 02:09, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Dwanyewest: Hi, is this task force still alive? Agreed there are some noteworthy topics there — for my part I can rustle up some more verifiable info about Vernon Bell and Tetsuji Murakami for starters, from my copy of Harry Cook's Shotokan Karate A Precise History.
I also saw a discussion on adding a Styles section on the main Karate article, which seems very worthwhile: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Comparison_of_karate_styles
And the main article Comparison of karate styles has a lot of room for improvement. Enreh (talk) 09:39, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Enreh: I was thinking maybe Comparison of karate styles should be merged to Karate. What do you think of the idea? Dwanyewest (talk) 09:46, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

edit

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
