Knickerbocker Building

I'm trying to find sources for a Knickerbocker Building that had to have been built prior to 1886 in New York City. You can see the discussion here. If someone(s) here can help with locating sources to use for this, that would be awesome. I don't know where to start with older buildings in New York. @Nihonjoe: Maybe this search may help, or you can use this website to search. These articles are all in the public domain. According to Special Notices in The New York Times, such as this one, there was a "Knickerbocker Building Association" which was organized in early 1852, but whether it built a "Knickerbocker Building" is not clear, nor is where that building is. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:28, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Finally. In this listing in The New York Times, the National Bond Association of New York is said to have its headquarters in the Knickerbocker Building at Fifth Avenue and 14th Street. The listing is from 1891, but it's the first indication I've seen in the Times of the existence of a "Kickerbocker Building". I think the "Knickerbocker flat" on the southwest corner of 5th & 14th that Epicgenius found from 1884 is clearly the same place.

Note that the current building at that location dates from 1908 according to the city's GIS map [1], but it takes its info from the Department of Buildings, and is sometimes inaccurate. For instance, an older building which had nothing on file with the city and then did some work which required filing forms in 1908 might well be list as dating from 1908. Thus it is possible that the building which is there now (at 80 5th Avenue) could be the same building that was there in 1884. I'm looking into it further. Actually, at 17 floors, it's unlikely that the current building was built before 1884, I don't think that the building and elevator technology existed to go more than 6 or 7 stories at that time. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:06, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

By 1901, there was a "Knickerbocker Building" at Broadway and 38th Street [3]. I believe Knickerbocker Building (disambiguation) shows this as being designed by Stanford White. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:01, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

• OK, take a look at this, a "Knickerbocker Building" at 79-83 Fifth Avenue on the south-east corner of 16th Street. Although the blog is "Landmark Branding LLC", thee is no indication at the NYCLPC website or in the city's GIS map that this building is landmarked. The GIS map says that it was built in 1906. [4]
  Just speculating here, it's possible that the owners of the Knickerbocker Building at 5th & 14th built a larger replacement building at 5th & 16th in 1906 and then sold their old lot. Categories on Commons

Over on commons, categories "X in New York" are being converted to "X in New Yori (state), usually without any consideration given to the fact that a large number of the elements in the category are actually in New York City, and ought to be in categories "X in New York City". I've been converting quite a few, but it would be helpful if the members of this project would take a look and do some of the conversions, creating the "X in New York City" categories and moving the appropriate files and sub-cats into them. Triborough Bridge approach stone towers

I think there are four pairs of stone towers for the approach to the Triborough Bridge, placed one mile away from the major bridge ramps in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx (this self published source says that there are two approaches in the Bronx, so I'll take that with a grain of salt). The Manhattan pair is on the FDR Drive near East 92nd Street, pictured here. The Queens pair is on Grand Central Parkway at 71st Street, pictured here. I can't find info online about the Bronx pairs of towers, or for the other two pairs for that matter. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Metropolitan Opera

The following sentences don't make sense to me, nor is it explained by linked subjects. The Met sold the property to Weiler, who razed the Old Met and built a 40-story tower to provide a steady income for the opera company? How does that work? And then the tower was sold (again) by the Met Opera? In that case, I have a Brooklyn Bridge I'd be glad to sell-- over and over again.

"The theater was purchased by Jack D. Weiler[2] and despite a campaign to preserve the theater, it failed to obtain landmark status and the old Met was razed in 1967. It was replaced by a 40-story office tower, 1411 Broadway, intended to provide a steady income for the opera company. Designed by Irwin S. Chanin and completed in 1970, the building was later sold by the Metropolitan Opera and today it is owned by 1411 TrizecHahn-Swig LLC, a partnership of the TrizecHahn and Swig real estate companies." What's the problem? The land and the tower are owned by different entities. The steady income the Met gets (or got) is (was) from the lease of the land to the owner of the tower. Such arrangements are not unusual. Rockefeller Center, for instance, stands on land owned by Columbia University, and the Chrysler Building stands on land owned by the Cooper Union. I am hopeful that there is an editor who would be able to do the WP:GA review of Pelham Bay Park. epicgenius, who has nominated it, and I did not agree during a recent GA review. Because of his good faith efforts, and the long wait time he experience prior to that review, despite being the one to have failed it I would like to make a personal pitch for someone else to conduct the review, especially if they have expertise in the subject matter. This was my second GA review with epic and I have found him to be a responsive and thoughtful editor. I hope I'm not the only one who realizes that back in the Spring of 2018, there was another glut of new pics of the city posted by User:OceanAtoll that wound up in the "Unidentified locations in New York City" category, and some of them are actually in New Jersey. September Mystery Pics

To add to the glut of unidentified pictures, User:Rodrigo.Argenton has added a small group of pictures, mostly titled "500px (Fill in the number)." Many of them have geotags which are out in the Atlantic Ocean far south of the Town of East Hampton, New York. WTC in popular culture

There are today at least four articles dedicated to appearances of the WTC buildings in mass media works: One World Trade Center in popular culture, World Trade Center in popular culture, World Trade Center in film, List of cultural references to the September 11 attacks. These articles appear to contain mainly passing appearances of the buildings: establishing shots and visibility in the background of a shot, without any significance in the work other than "being there." In the film article especially, there are dozens of examples for which only the title of the film is provided, and the appearance cannot be verified short of watching the entire film with eagle-eyes. There are exceptions (such as 9/11 tribute films), and I'm not proposing to delete these articles, but I believe their scope should be drastically narrowed at least to works in which the building's significance in the work can be explained and is explained. If that means they are reduced to a fraction of their length, so be it. It is against Wikipedia policies to collect information into articles "indiscriminately," which I understand to mean "without regard for educational value." I do not see what is educational about a list of examples that merely say "the WTC was there." Max Rose (politician): deletion of notable biography

Max Rose is a major-party candidate (Democratic) in a highly competitive election for national office - U.S. Representative of Staten Island and southern Brooklyn. As you can tell from the article, his campaign has received national coverage. Rose has raised more than $3.4 million for his candidacy, and at present, is predicted to receive more than 45% of the vote. See FiveThirtyEight.com's analysis of this district. Rose's article is needed before the November 6 election by people who want more information about how to vote.

I was very surprised to notice yesterday that there was no Wikipedia article on Max Rose, given that he's a major party candidate in a competitive district, so I helped write the current version of the article with La comadreja. I didn't know anything about Rose until yesterday, but he's garnered significant coverage in major international newspapers (multiple NY Times articles, article in the Guardian, article in Times of Israel) for months (and even a year). He clearly meets the notability criterion of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject of the article." It's absurd for there to be no article about him. Roosevelt Street

It is entirely fallacious to claim that the NYC draft riots of 1863 began at Roosevelt Street. The draft riots started on the morning of July 13th when the 9th District draft office at 3rd Ave and 46th street was attacked by members of the Black Joke fire engine company. The colored sailors boarding house on Roosevelt Street wasn't attacked until 5pm that day after main rioting took place at the draft office and the armory at 2 ave and 21st street. OK, I see the confusion. The article, and the source it's based on, isn't saying that the violence started there, it's saying thet Roosevelt Street was the place where the (to be) rioters assembled before heading uptown. Location maps in infoboxes of places in Manhattan

I see that for many articles of places in Manhattan, the location map in the infobox provides options for Manhattan/Lower Manhattan and New York state maps. Surely a New York City map would be more useful for readers, right? Showing a reader where the place is located in New York City is more useful than where the place is located in New York state, because the latter would simply show as a point located where NYC should be. I propose adding New York City as an option, or replacing the New York state option with the NYC map. But which is preferred?

In other words: which edit is more useful: adding New York City as a map or replacing the New York state map with the New York City map?

@Feminist: Personally I'd prefer adding NYC as a map - more maps to choose from. However, there is a third option, adding an interactive MapFrame map. This allows the user to zoom in or out to different levels of specificity. The default zoom level can be set manually in {{maplink}}, as can the map width and height. However, I've noticed that a zoom level of 9 is suitable for a city view, and a zoom level of 11 is suitable for a borough view. And at a zoom level of 14, you can make out individual streets, etc.

This also works for every other locality in the world, and isn't constrained by whether a location map exists for that location. epicgenius (talk) 20:30, 21 January 2019 (UTC)

Grant Square geographic anomaly

The commons description of Grant Square in Brooklyn describes it as being at Bedford and Rogers Avenues between Dean and Bergen Streets in Crown Heights. However, the Washington Temple Church of God in Christ (former Loew's Theater) is on the northwest corner of Bergen Street and Bedford Avenue which is said to be in Bedford-Stuyvesant, yet it's directly across Bedford Avenue from the "Grant Gore." So wouldn't that mean Grant Square is in both Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights? I need to know this, because I took a bunch of pictures of both sites back in October 2018. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 15:32, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

Well:

• As I'm sure you know, neighborhood boundaries in NYC aren't officially set, they are determined by usage;
• Google Maps shows the boundary between Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights at Atlantic Avenue, a few blocks north of Grant Square, putting the square in Crown Heights;
• The Encyclopedia of New York City lists the same boundary as Google Maps;
• However, The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn shows the boundary at Park Place, putting the square (just) in Bed-Stuy;
• Then again, the AIA Guide to New York City uses the Atlantic Avenue border;
• The NYCLPC's Crown Heights North Historic District has a northern boundary which is midblock south of Atlantic Avenue, meaning it, too, recognizes those blocks as being part of Crown Heights. (Grant Square itself is not part of the district, but the building at the southeast corner of Dean and Rogers, confusingly called the "Fort Greene Grant Square Center", even though it's nowhere near Fort Greene, is in the district);
• The website of the Washington Temple Church of God in Christ says it is "Located in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn".

All-in-all, the usage appears to be very much on the side of Grant Square being in Crown Heights and not in Bed-Stuy - which brings up the question, where did you see the C.O.G.I.C described as being in Bed-Stuy? Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:12, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

@Jim.henderson: Jim often takes his photos while on group bicycle rides, maybe he didn't realize he had crossed over a neighborhood boundary.

The NYCLPC clearly describes the Studebaker Building on Bedford as in Crown Heights. The other one isn't a landmark, but a lot of sites describe it as being in Crown Heights as well [6] -- and by the definitions of pretty most all of the sources above too. It's really too far south to be in Bed-Stuy, so I wonder why that designation got started? Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:45, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

In his defense, those signs can't be at every street that crosses the Brooklyn-Queens line. Hi! I didn't know if anyone was willing to work on a park article or not - a student of mine created the article on St. James Park (Bronx). The class ends this week and I'm not entirely sure if they will be back on to edit it, but at the present it lacks information and sourcing to establish how it's notable. Proposed renaming - Community Boards to Community District

I would like to suggest the renaming of the Community Boards of New York City category to Community Districts of New York City. The rationale is that the community district is the administrative unit, while the community board is the appointed representative of said district. The rationale also applies to the individual community district articles, such as Brooklyn Community Board 2, which should also be renamed (i.e. Brooklyn Community District 2). --HugoHelp (talk) 22:08, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

This is an interesting idea. My whole life people have always called them "Community Boards", so I'm somewhat inclined to think this is a case of WP:COMMON and a valid use of metonymy like when "the Kremlin" refers to the Russian government. Unfortunately, it seems an editor has moved several images to the crowded Commons:Category:Buildings in New York City and Commons:Category:Buildings in Manhattan, New York City categories which runs contrary to the modularity principle (and kicks the can down the road). I also often kick a can from an overcrowded or clearly incorrect road, and down a narrower one, intending to kick it further when I get to diffusing that road a few days or months later. Sometimes the place to where I kick it is completely unfamiliar to me, so I'm only hoping someone who knows that place will handle it someday. Since this was obviously a group request, I would have expected the courtesy of allowing editors (who may not see this request for days or weeks) the chance to identify each image in this relatively small set. Furthermore, I'd expect File:Desenfoque (141668967).jpeg, File:Car Window (46897770).jpeg, and File:500px photo (205553011).jpeg to not be categorized as "Buildings in" under the principle of least astonishment. BTW, do you recognize File:Fog City (133449823).jpeg? First row is Bedford Ave, Brooklyn. Only one I haven't categorized is this one, which is probably one of the streets right around there, but not Bedford Ave itself. BTW, DanielPenfield, why is is running against the modularity principle? If a picture primarily depicts a building, and we know it's in NYC, it should certainly be moved from NYC to buildings in NYC. Good catch! Regarding the categorization principles: I see--the modularity principle is essentially a vaguely-worded restatement of COM:OVERCAT. Well, I was hoping that there would be a principle that would express the goal of ultimately placing every image in leaf categories, but apparently there isn't one. Regardless, moving the images one level down in the category system basically thwarted my original request as pretty much nobody is going to track them down once they've been lost in the 400+ image Commons:Category:Buildings in New York City or 400+ image Commons:Category:Buildings in Manhattan, New York City. In other words, I'd expect editors to give others the chance to identify them more precisely in the coming days and weeks instead of unilaterally burying them in overpopulated categories. Also the fact that File:Sharp Lines (158011215).jpeg, File:Nuevas Alturas (141668059).jpeg, and File:Desenfoque (141668967).jpeg have found significantly more specific categories since my original request indicates that sweeping them under already-overcrowded category rugs was premature. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 19:52, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

As the aforementioned editor who moved the images to the "Buildings in..." categories, I don't think this is necessarily is a problem. Yes, it would get lost in the slightly-less-vague parent categories, but these would also need diffusion as well. I'm definitely sure that File:Fog City (133449823).jpeg is of East Village, looking west from the roof of University Settlement, on 14th Street east of Avenue B. There are too many similarities, I just didn't notice them because I didn't realize that there is now a development in front of what originally seemed like a brick wall (East Side Community High School). I think I understand what you mean, Daniel. It's not that you disagree that narrowing the category by one level isn't a useful edit (that seems uncontroversial), but that you had set up this identification project presuming the files would remain in those upper level categories until fully identified. However, for a "project" of 16 images, if you can't get them really close to their ultimate leaf categories, I'm not really sure why you would think that's constructive editing. Also, isn't it a bit narcissistic to presume that nobody else can make a more precise categorization than you, so you're just going to "move it one level and claim victory"? Commons categorization certainly is a mess, in part because it has to be hierarchical, in a world that is not. Many picture sites use a more atomic, non-hierarchical system of multiple hashtags or similar short simple descriptors intended for use with a text search. There's no need to identify just a few categories that are relevant to the search at hand, or to see all the pictures that have a particular tag. Maybe Commons should try to go that way, either with or without the help of Wikidata. Presumbably it would be an addition rather than a replacement for categories, which of course means it's a complication to an already complex system of describing pictures. Obviously the question goes far beyond the world's most wonderful city or even geographical entities in general, which I guess makes it a big question of wikipolitics. Do you think there will be enough interest to put it on the agenda for Wednesday's Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/January 2020? Jim.henderson (talk) 06:57, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

My impression is that what you're describing is exactly COM:DEPICTS which is too difficult for most editors to use, given their struggles with the present Commons categorization system, IMHO. BTW, if you want to propose (in your meetup) something both useful and practicable to implement in short order, a leading candidate is auto-identification of black and white versus color images. For example, Commons:File:Fog City (133449823).jpeg is was categorized as Commons:Category:Black and white photographs of skylines of Manhattan, New York City, yet my image editing software reports nonzero-height red, green, and blue histograms for it. A clever implementer should be able to autoparse the JFIF tags in the JPEG, determine whether chrominance channels are present, and if they are, whether they contain nonzero pixel values. It looks like a similar approach could be used for PNG. A more advanced feature would be to distinguish between black and white, color, and sepia/blue-tinted monochrome images. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 01:32, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Automatic sorting out of B&W certainly ought to be easy; its usefulness is what I somewhat doubt. As for COM:DEPICTS being about simple tagging, I am surprised to agree after a moment's thought. I need more serious thinking to figure how that process might be improved. Requesting map of Assembly districts from the 1920s

Hello,

I have been working on old municipal elections for a while, particularly of the 1920s and 1930s, and would like to have maps of the Assembly districts from that time. I already have the boundaries from the 1919 World Almanac here (for those inclined, the individual election district boundaries can be found in the 1918 Almanac here; unfortunately upstate districts, which from what I could gather were drawn by the relevant county prior to the 1960s, are not found in either of them), but given my ignorance of the streets outside of Manhattan as well as how to make complicated shapes in SVG I would be much obliged if someone could make the map. If you make the map in SVG, please annotate which district is which in the source code as I use a text editor to manipulate vector graphics. (I also have a source for aldermanic districts from this time, but it's several days of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle that is lower resolution, and is less important.)

In the meantime, does anyone with a good eye know where File:Closed playground in New York City on April 1st, 2020.jpg might be? All I know is that I've never seen this type of relatively-new play equipment, and it feels like one of the outer boroughs (or Upper Manhattan) with medium-density residential buildings. The big apartment building, the slanted structure at the top left corner, and the length of the name on the sign might also be a clue (it is about 5 or 6 letters and is one of these basketball facilities). While working on George Floyd protests in New York City and going through some of the sources and related Wikipedia articles, it's occurring to me that Wikipedia could really use an article about "NYPD and race". We do have New York City Police Department corruption and misconduct, but it's mainly a long list. What would be better would be not just spinning out race-based material from that page, but thoughtful organization and history. There's certainly enough sources. @Star Mississippi: Both the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and Dance Theatre Workshop (the predecessor to New York Live Arts) have a long history independent from each other. We need a better process for Wikipedia:Requested pictures. This case was a bit more complicated because the Wikidata item had no coordinates or street address, hence did not appear on WikShootMe or Commons App. I live nearby and walked down that street a couple weeks ago, unknowing. Among the hundreds of photos needing categories in Commons:Category:Unidentified locations in New York City is now this photo, purported to have been "Cbs2 HQ" and "WCBS-TV studios" at the time. It seems to be a protrusion from a larger building, of a different design, on a well-travelled street. It has banners for The Early Show and The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, and the camera date is April 2007. I've followed Black Rock (CBS HQ) and CBS Broadcast Center each all the way around the block on Google Street View and still couldn't find it, and they both look different than the big building in this photo anyway. Conversion of subprojects to taskforces

Greetings to all, I recently noticed that WikiProject Chinese in New York City and WikiProject City University of New York are no longer active. I'm thinking it makes sense to transistion these into WPNYC as taskforces where all project members here can more easily maintain them, what does everyone else think?

I've already been helping in a few cases (e.g. WT:NY) to transition inactive WikiProjects to taskforces; so I'm willing to do the template sandbox work and write up any RM/TR or other requests needed if there is a consensus in favor.

@Quantocius Quantotius: Hi! While WikiProject CUNY is somewhat inactive on wiki, it's been very active at CUNY. I request that this remains a separate project. Its primary focus is to connect Wikipedians at CUNY, and not to edit article about CUNY or the surrounding areas. For this reason, it might make sense to remove it as a subgroup of WikiProject NYC. @Megs: Thanks for your reply. I'm still kind of finding my way around here and WPCUNY is the first WikiProject I've run across that is primarily about off-wiki activity; in fact I didn't even know there were any WikiProjects that had an off-wiki focus.

In any event, I have two thoughts about this. First, the idea behind a TASKFORCE is that it reduces bureaucratic overhead so in this case WPNYC would just start providing much of the procedural and technical infrastructure, but the taskforce could still have it's own discussions and pages, in fact there is no need to move any pages at all and indeed with the massive WikiProject New York merger we did not do so, just in case that is your primary concern. Second, it would be wrong to convert a project to a taskforce over the objection of its members, therefore as long as an objection remains WPCUNY should remain separate.

To your other point I'm unclear all the steps it would take to remove WPNYC as a parent project (although I can do the research if you feel strongly about this), it would most likely have to start with a discussion here, presumably in a separate thread to reduce confusion. But there's also other pages that document the larger WikiProject organizational scheme and some of those would need to be modified as well. It might be best to ask at WT:Council to get a faster reply as I'm not an everyday editor. On the note, it may be tricky for me to reply again for a few days, but I will try to get back to you by the weekend if possible.

New York Times articles (pre 1970's)

Hello! I am doing research on a topic that is discussed in older New York Times articles (pre 1970's). I can see some of the preview text and the date, but I cannot see the author's name. It seems that only current subscribers can see the author's name. Are there editors who are NYT subscribers that can look up the author information? This must be a frequent problem. Epigenius: I think you might be confusing the New York Times with Time magazine. In the modern era, the majority of NYT articles have had bylines. It was Time which never had bylines for anything from its creation in the 1920's until they changed their policy relatively recently (70's? 80's? 90's?). Beyond My Ken, I should probably clarify this. I wasn't thinking about Time when I commented, but I might have still been a little hasty. A lot of the NYT articles that I've seen before the 50s-60s don't have bylines (such as the 1934 source cited in the Negro Folk Symphony article). I-95 (Cross Bronx) location

Bloomingdale failure

A few days ago in Quora I cane across a new editor who was unhappy because his draft of a new article had been rejected (umm, what do they call it, declined? Whatever) so with a little discussion I found that he was part of a small historical Society in the upper Manhattan Valley, Manhattan area, who want to make their little neighborhood its own separate article. And Bloomingdale Road, Bloomingdale NYPL, Bloomingdale School, etc. Apparently they've got some small degree of competence as amateur historians; just no Wiki wisdom, being for the most part, nearly as old and slow-learning as me. So, I've copied my last reply into User talk:Fuertebrazos and we could use some help from the experienced. Mine from the west on a cloudy day in another year, with a broader view of the plaza but still with about the same amount of detail for the monument, was killed last month. My guess is, an interesting foreground saved the Marathon one. Alas, this event was by far the most exciting thing I've ever seen there. The circular area around the monument is in theory a performance space, but nobody performs there. Task Force: NYC Landmarks

Hi all, would there be any interest in forming a task force focused on NYC landmarks? The city is full of so many stubs that could be expanded upon, especially with a focus toward historic detailing. Intended scope would be structures that make up (or formerly made up!) the physical fabric of the city.. things like:

• infrastructure (bridges, tunnels, sea terminals, public utilities, etc.)
• parks & public spaces
• historic attractions/installations (world's fair stuff, zoos, beaches, etc)
• notable building categories (theaters/hotels/restaurants/venues/mansions)

Headphase, that would be a great idea. On a purely technical basis, "NYC Landmark" (capitalized) refers to official designations by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. I would suggest something like "infrastructure and places", as you are proposing a larger scope such as transport, buildings, etc, as well as green spaces and attractions.   This seems like an initiative we might want to involve Open House New York with. It typically brings new contributors to Commons. Also, bit of a tangent, but it would be useful to have a list of high-priority buildings that need better pictures. We have categories/templates, but they're pretty indiscriminate in terms of importance and very often outdated with regard to what photos are actually in the article.   I agree a partnership with OHNY would help us. I didn't know we had worked with them in the past. This effort sounds like a long-term project which I think is great! Could start with one or two focused monthly collab sessions before taking on a life of it's own. I am thinking that Historic Landmarks is a starting point for the list. Looking for input on several dimensions to rate the images used on these articles to encourage refinement. For example, evaluate age (contemporary vs. historic), need for higher-res, too many obstructions, perspective (aerial vs. street level) and others. Like your idea of collecting a set of photographers interested to rate and collect new images. - DutchTreat (talk) 15:23, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

  For architectural photography of NYC buildings, I think that would be great. There are a lot of historic landmarks that still don't have too many images. I've been tackling this issue recently, but most of my images so far have been in Manhattan.   @Rhododendrites: Sorry for the late response to your inquiry. Perspective is obviously difficult to handle, and I generally try to get as far away from the building as possible ideally without letting in distracting elements like traffic lights, power lines, etc. Even with a 14mm full-frame lens, you can sometimes struggle to include the entire building. For skyscrapers, a remote or aerial view would be best for the infobox, while a ground-level close-up (uncorrected for perspective distortion) would be a nice to have.

  One factor that is too rarely mentioned is the sun angle. If the building is east-facing, then it is best photographed during the morning; if it is west-facing, then afternoon. If it is south-facing, fall or winter can be better than spring or summer because the angle of the sun is lower, providing more dramatic lighting. If it is north-facing, then it can only really be photographed during the summer, during early morning or late afternoon (early morning is better for Manhattan given the grid angle). Though, direct head-on lighting is not necessarily the best, as having light come at a slight angle can make for a more dynamic image. For subjects with very tricky lighting and/or lots of shadows, it may be advisable to photograph them during times of soft light. A cloudy day can be good for scenes that have little or no sky in the background. Dawn/dusk (10 minutes before sunrise or after sunset) is a good way to get neutral, muted colors, while the blue hour (20-40 minutes into twilight) can make for a great contrast between artificial lights and the dark blue sky. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 21:28, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Unidentified buildings

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go on a boat tour with Open House New York. I wasn't planning to make it a photography event, but the light was good and it's unusual (for me anyway) to get that perspective. So I took a few, but don't know what all the buildings are.   • While OHNY may be able to help, none of these were part of the tour. We just happened to pass them. It wasn't a typical landmarks-based tour; more about history and infrastructure. Yes, looks like you're right about the Standard High Line. Tdorante10 went ahead and identified several of them on Commons (thanks!).     • A quick Google Maps search clearly indicates that both pictures are from the Chelsea Piers (Piers 60 and 61), but the second building is on 11th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets. Where under the IRT is this?

I'm still trying to find the exact location of one image of a bus along US 9 (Broadway) beneath the elevated section of the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line. Assuming this is genuinely in Manhattan, the only two places this could possibly be are in Inwood or Marble Hill. Sadly, attempting to identify the neighborhood by the storefronts has proven to be unhelpful.

Assuming this isn't a joke:

• Is this your pic? If it's not your image: ignore most of what follows:
  • Is this one image from a series?
    • Have you looked at the adjacent images?
    • What's the time differential?
    • Do you have gps data from any of these image?
  • I added a note re the streetlight, can you see the note?
  • The name of the business behind the bus is Discount Beauty Supply, but you already knew that.
  • Have you tried adjusting the exposure to pull data from what appear to be nearly completely blown out areas of the image for the two businesses on the right hand side of the image?

@DanTD: It isn't a joke, first of all. Based on searching for Discount Beauty Supply, I found that this is not on the IRT, but is on Broadway in Brooklyn here, under the BMT Jamaica Line, at Myrtle Avenue. Wanted photos page

Hi all,

We have Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New York City, but that system is (a) cumbersome, (b) frequently outdated, (c) hard to navigate, and (d) includes a variety of requests, from photos of historic events to people and buildings that don't exist anymore. I've started a new page, Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City/Wanted photos, intended to be actionable photo requests. The idea is to request a new or improved photo of something that one of our members might actually be able to take themselves. There's a section for photo requests, difficult requests (e.g. if something requires special access, or if you just want a really high quality photo), and photo opportunities (like an upcoming event). Take a look, and add as you see fit. We'll see if it works. Incorrect coordinates

Two images of a Bee-Line bus to Bedford Park

Louis Nizer

NYC lawyer and his article has been a little neglected despite having a very long and interesting career so I added a few sources and formatted it a bit. The NYTimes has a ton of articles on him. It's a common far right claim that he advocated genocidal approach to post-war Germany in his 1944 book What to do with Germany using cherry picked quotations from the book and reviews of the book. Since it's a low traffic page an IP added that claim in 2019 and it wasn't removed until Jan 2020. Using two book reviews I summarized what the book actually advocates. Linda Lee (politician)

I saw this article when patrolling CAT:CSD earlier, and it made a clear claim (more of that in a mo) to meet WP:POLITICIAN, so I removed the A7 tag and started improving it. I then got stuck, because the only sources I can find show that Lee is the projected winner of the New York City's 23rd City Council district election, not the actual confirmed winner. I'm not totally up to speed with local politics in NYC, but I assume this is analogous to a network "calling" the presidential race when they have good reason to believe it's mathematically impossible for anyone else to win, as opposed to an actual, final and certified result. This is important for this article, because it pretty much makes the case or not for Lee meeting WP:POLITICIAN, and hence deserving an article. @Headphase: This isn't a bad idea, though I don't think I would implement it exactly as suggested.

So WikiProject importance is WP:Vital articles for specific topics. Obviously projects don't have the time or participants to discuss things in detail the way they are there, so I don't mind standardization to make things easier even if we know it's not going to be perfect but we should still exercise care, especially with top importance stuff. In short the question we should be asking ourselves is if we were going to write an encyclopedia of New York City which articles would be most crucial. Looking at the stats for all projects it seems the aim is to have around 3/4 rated low, 1/5 rated mid, 1/20 rated high, and >1/100 rated top, as a rough guide.

My biggest concern is WP:RECENTISM, especially with the bios. I would not automatically include bios of current office holders at top, especially as we cannot yet predict their long-term impact, though all mayors should be at least mid. Notice also how there are no bios in vital articles until you get to level 3. I would use considerably more nuance with former sports teams, the Brooklyn Dodgers probably should be a high, but some short-lived teams, even if big-league by the standards of their day may end-up being low. Current professional sports teams outside the big 4 North American leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) are probably not going to be top. Really when it comes to top-importance it might be a useful exercise to ask if we could only have ≈200 articles what would they be.

However, we don't have to get it perfect in advance, especially for high and mid stuff it might be best to try something that looks more or less right and then tweak it until the system is reasonably consistent and getting us in the neighborhood of the expected numbers. Ratings aren't permanent they can always be adjusted if major inconsistencies start to appear, or stuff just looks wrong. 81.177.27.61 (talk) 03:39, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
