Olympic and Paralympics sidebars

I would like to propose some changes to the sidebars placed on both Olympic and Paralympic Games-related articles. It will use {{Sidebar}} as standard, and the color pallet used by most of the Olympic templates. The {{navbox}} links at the bottom of the sidebars are optional. Olympic records in cycling (men's team sprint)

The article for the 2012 Men's team sprint states some times as new Olympic records however looking back to the 2008 OR set by GB some of them are not. I bring this up here as the times marked out as new ORs were also done so in offical timings AFAIK. I think I am missing something (eg rule change) but just in case it is in error...

To clarify in 2008 GB set an OR (and WR) of 42.950 seconds.

2012 Paralympics

As I'm sure you are all already aware the 2012 Paralympics have now started. If anyone is willing and able to lend a hand the Paralympics taskforce could do with some help updating the Nations at the 2012 Summer Paralympics articles and also help creating event articles, the majority of which are still redlinks. List of multiple gold medalists ranked by share of won Olympic events

List of multiple gold medalists ranked by share of won Olympic events seems to have the same issues as Olympic medals by teams (see above, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Olympic medals by teams). Actually, pretty much everything on Template:Olympics statistics could use a serious look. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 22:23, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that one should be obliterated (the source given above is self published so not WP:RELIABLE). As far as the other articles on the template go I think most of the one's listing multiple medalists are okay, although they could probably be sourced a bit more thoroughly and while I'm not convinced a ranking should be applied, all the excitment over Phelps has meant there are plenty of instances of doing so in the media. List of multiple Olympic medalists in one event and List of multiple Olympic gold medalists in one event however seem a bit iffy to me, I'm not sure there's any need for them. List of athletes with the most appearances at Olympic Games could be rescued from it's current chaotic state if we chose to simply give the athlete with most appearances in each sport. List of athletes with the most appearances at Olympic Games is mostly a duplicate of a section here but again I could see it working if we raze it to the ground and rebuild - Basement12 (T.C) 01:27, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

The criteria for some of these lists is pretty bad. I've never heard any prominent source discuss medals as percentage of games events, thus ranked by share should be deleted. I'm completely unsure of what Lists of Olympic medalists is meant to present, but it is not what the title implies. I believe it can be deleted because it largely duplicates material from the SPORT at the Olympics or main games page sections like this. I cannot fathom what idea that collection of data is supposed to help with. I think the medals in different disciplines list is better as a stand-alone and we should remove the corresponding section in List of multiple Olympic medalists.

I believe we can merge the content "in one event" and "at a single games" lists covering gold medalists and plain medalists. A sort function and some notes should suffice to provide the reader with the information, seeing as it is roughly the exact same information, only sorted in a different way. To clarify, I think we should rationalise the lists to the following:

• List of multiple Olympic medalists
• List of multiple Olympic medalists at a single Games
• List of multiple Olympic medalists in one event
• List of athletes with Olympic medals in different disciplines
• List of athletes with the most appearances at Olympic Games

Something I don't know how to fix.

As I was going through working on the 2004 ((nation)) at the 2004 Summer Olympics pages, I noticed on the page for the 2004 Women's 400 meters in athletics that the flag for Chad is broken. I don't know how to fix it. JDBear (talk) 00:22, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Our Greatest Team Parade

Should the Our Greatest Team Parade be added to both {{2012 Summer Olympics}} and {{2012 Summer Paralympics}}? Although it will only be a London event, it is still a final part of the Olympics programme. Or do you know where it should be linked from? I don't think it should be linked to from either of those templates. Much like the 2012 Olympics gold post boxes in the United Kingdom it's specific to GB and isn't part of the IOC organisation of the Olympics (LOCOG aren't in control of it either). I'm sure most nations have similar celebrations when their athlete arrive home. It's linked to from relevant British pages which I think is all that's needed - Basement12 (T.C) 19:23, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Paralympic sport pictograms

Hello. Just wanted to warn those who may be interested that I have begun creating pictograms for the Paralympic sports, in the same manner as the free-licensed generic Olympic sport pictograms. As I post this, I have already uploaded pictograms for archery, athletics, boccia and wheelchair basketball; in the next days, I'll continue uploading more. You can find them in my Commons gallery. I happen to be at Boccia_at_the_2012_Summer_Paralympics today - so I'll probably be poking that article later - while I'm there is there anything I should know about image rights and the like? i.e. if I take a picture in the arena, that picture is mine to upload right? On the assumption you were there on a standard spectator ticket, that ticket forbids the use of photos for commercial purposes, so if you accept that premise, you should be using a non-commercial licence.Le Deluge (talk) 20:36, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Russia

I believe Russia at the Olympics should only cover Russian participation in the Olympics since 1994, and we should create Russian Empire at the Olympics to cover Russian participation from 1900 to 1912. If I'm not mistaken, the IOC does not sum up Olympic participation by the Russian Empire and Russia together. Also, I notice medal tables for former Soviet republics, such as Turkmenistan at the Olympics, for example, start off listing 1900–1912 participation "as part of Russia". The Russian Empire only participated in three Games: 1900, 1908, and 1912. Are there any sources indicating whether athletes from any subsequent Soviet republics were part of those teams?  Done. I've also created {{Infobox Olympics Russian Empire}} for the 1900, 1908 and 1912 articles. The next step is to rename those three articles to "Russian Empire at the ..." and replace all "RUS" instances for the flagIOC family of templates to use "RU1" instead. Thanks. I went ahead and created Russian Empire at the Olympics and have been going around switching RUS to RU1 where applicable. The question regarding the subsequent Soviet republics still stands. I don't think most former Soviet republics should have participation notices as part of the Russian Empire for 1900 through 1912, except it looks like maybe Estonia and a few others. China

Similarly to the Russian issue above, we currently have a joint Republic of China (ROC) and Chinese Taipei (TPE) article: Chinese Taipei at the Olympics. Following the same logic as with Russia, we need to have these separated. "Country" at the Olympics tables

As I had previously posted, I'm going through the List of IOC country codes and standardizing "Country" at the Olympics articles with uniform tables. It's a slow process, and I'm done with countries through about half of C. As I was editing I thought maybe a combined total medals table should be added as well, something like this (Belarus is used as an example):

It's a bit redundant, admittedly, but it does work as a quick overview of how many Games a country has participated in, and this basically distills the country information from the All-time Olympic Games medal table article, which includes Summer, Winter, and Combined totals. Also, "Summer Games" and "Winter Games" could be linked to appropriate "Country" at the "Season" Olympics article, if it exists. Jmj713 (talk) 18:48, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Olympic atheletes

Why is the American category titled Category:Olympic track and field athletes of the United States, but all the others are simply just "Olympic atheletes of x"? Lugnuts ^{And the horse} 13:21, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

I guess that it's a question of what the word "athlete" means. In UK English, "athlete" = "someone who competes in track and field" ("track and field" is known as "athletics" in the UK). In US English, "athlete" = "sportsman/woman". Bluap (talk) 13:57, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

It's an instance where WP:ENGVAR takes precedence over consistency. If a wording can be found that works in all flavours of English, then use that (eg "aircraft" rather than airplane/aeroplane), but otherwise the US article should use a category that makes sense in US English and the GB article should make sense in British English. That's more important than consistency between articles - another common example where consistency may get broken is to accommodate the various permutations of UK/GB/England etc, sometimes it can be better to just use "British" where the country name is used in other articles.Le Deluge (talk) 10:22, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

The Template:Sports-reference can be used in "external links" or not?

Back when we were going through the threat of mass BLP deletions, I rescued any athletics articles I could find, the majority by using sports-reference. In that situation, many were already using an external link to s-r but to the automated system that didn't count. Change it to an in-line reference (relative to any point, that they participated in the Olympics being the pertinent one) and it always worked. Referencing to their participation in the Olympics (which qualifies them for s-r) solves the additional problem as it is an indisputable primary point of notability under WP:ATHLETE. Well, EL's are supposed to be "new", any link that is being used as a reference is not supposed to be repeated as an EL, anything listed in an EL should bring things that are both relevant, and not used as refs. (The exception is when a subject's official website has been used as a ref, then it should be repeated as an EL, but that's just to highlight their official website, not general practice) Courcelles 15:34, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Courcelles we all agree that SR should not be repeated as EL and as ref. But the question is, it should preferably (as in the case of the template Imdb as EL), used as EL. So just put the sources in the body of the article with other notes. The difference is that IMDb isn't a reliable source for anything, no matter how basic. So IMDb should never appear as a ref. SR has been upheld as reliable countless times at RSN. FAC and FLC. Courcelles 05:29, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Templates

Hi, User:Stigni and User:Raymarcbadz have recently decided that templates need to be created, such as this Template:2008 Summer Olympics women's football game D4, in order to save space. I'm asking the project what it thinks to this, as personally I really don't see the point and think this is a ridiculous waste of time, just to save on articles. For instance the Football at the 2008 Summer Olympics page was only 30,00 bytes, so it is not as if the page is extremely large and takes a while to load. I'd thought I'd ask the project's opinion, as these kind of templates are starting to become commonplace. Cheers. NapHit (talk) 14:59, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

You look only the Football page but if you look United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics (without template) has 300,000 bytes, but United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics has 200,000 bytes so I think that the templates are very useful also for the 2008 Olympics. Whether it saves 100,000 bytes of space on a page is irrelevant, the point is these templates are complete waste of time. Saving space should not be a mandate to create hundreds of pointless template which remove content from pages and are not needed. Why this has this become an issue all of the sudden? The event finished four years ago, these template were never needed before, what has changed since? This madness has got to stop, because in the big picture you're not actually saving any space. This is all on wiki's servers, you're just moving the bytes round. If the tables were correctly formatted to meet WP:ACCESS and MOS:DTT, the space would be reduced regardless. For those interested there is a discussion here regarding these templates. One of the suggestions to reduce article size is to split article such as United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics, with three subarticles on track-field, swimming and other articles. Problem with Group F standings in women's football

The group F standings for women's football at 2012 games show Cameroon as being the fourth team in the group when in fact it was South Africa. Federated States of Micronesia vs. Micronesia

There are currently 6 pages which use the name Micronesia:

• Micronesia at the Olympics
• Micronesia at the 2000 Summer Olympics
• Micronesia at the 2004 Summer Olympics
• Micronesia at the 2008 Summer Olympics
• Micronesia at the 2012 Summer Olympics
• List of flag bearers for Micronesia at the Olympics

Back in November 2006, Andrwsc suggested using the abbrevated form of Micronesia.

The problem with this is that Micronesia is not the common short form name of the Federated States of Micronesia. Micronesia is the name used for the geographic region, one of the three ethno-cultural divisions of the South Pacific.

I recommend that we change Template:Country IOC alias FSM to return "Federated States of Micronesia" and move the above six pages. Thoughts? -- Ianblair23 (talk) 06:04, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Nations at the 2014 Winter Olympics

Just wondering when would it be a good time to create the Nations at the 2014 Winter Olympics pages. For Summer 2012 I believe we created the pages as countries qualify their first athletes. Right now 9 countries have athletes, all from Ice Hockey (plus Russia's host quotas). Should we start from there or wait until around mid-Feb where qualification in Biathlon boosts the number of qualified nations to around 30? JoshMartini007 (talk) 05:50, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

2000 & Past Olympic Games (Summer & Winter) Sports Calendars

I have noticed Resolute that there is no sports Calendar for the 2000 Sdyney Olympic Games. I wonder if its possible to create one at all as the page looks somewhat in-compete without it? All the other Olympic Games bewteen 1960-2012 have a sports calendar apart from 2000. Also is it possible to create sports calendars for Olympic Games pior to 1956 apart from 1900, 1904 and 1908 for somewhat obovios reasons and and also for past winter olympic games as well as there are very few on those pages.(MOTORAL1987 (talk) 17:36, 15 January 2013 (UTC))

Continental Association's listed as "sports federations"?

Is there a reason all 5 continental associations (ANOCA, EOC, OCA, ONOC and PASO) are listed as "Sports federation" in their Infoboxes? Shouldn't they be listed as "Continental Association"? Article for creation Olympic Games results index

I have written an article that I wish to call Olympic results index. Currently it has been moved to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Olympic results index (on 04 March 2013). I have been waiting patiently for some news but apparently the backlog is huge. Do you think it would be OK for me to move it to article space myself? If I did what other considerations should I bear in mind? I originally raised this at the Teahouse. I know there are already many articles which have some of the content contained in my article but none summarises all sports in all years of both summer and winter olympics. I feel that my article would serve a real purpose by making it very easy to get to the required page with the least effort. It was suggested in the Teahouse that you may feel that List of olympic results may be a better name but I would much prefer my own version. sionk has also said that it might be better as a template but I think it's a little too big for that. Germany at the Olympics issue

User:IIIraute seems to be pushing quite obviously a POV that's not in line with the rest of Olympic articles by resisting the addition of a medal table to Germany at the Olympics article. I've been slowly going through each article for countries at the Olympics and bringing them all into a unified standard, all based on the official IOC data. Why should Germany be excluded? Should these exist? I don't see any content that could not reasonably be covered by the Germany at the Olympics article, i.e. the standard "country's Olympic history summary article". Spain is indeed number six on this, which is one click from citation given. There are several other differences as well. I kind of doubt it is official as it includes the consolation tournament, but I can't find any other classification beyond the top four. In general, you follow the convention of country of origin, although there are various guidelines to cover this, linked from Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people)#People_from_countries_where_the_surname_comes_first; you may also find Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies helpful. You can try and expand the lead, if you find good and relevant information about the delegation and the athlete's participation. IOC flag template 1968

Hello, I'm working at the behest of Ng Ser Miang, who has been involved in the Olympics at various levels and is a prominent Singaporean businessman, to make improvements to his article here on Wikipedia. Currently, there are a number of issues with the article. To address these, I've redrafted the article, uploading my draft to my userspace. I've also provided a more detailed accounting of the problems with the current article, as well as an overview of my draft, at Talk:Ng Ser Miang.

Because of my financial COI, I won't implement these changes myself. Instead, I'm reaching out to volunteer editors to vet my work and, if everything looks acceptable, move the article over into the mainspace. I went to the USOC website to get information on their Hall of Fame inductees, but could not find a comprehensive list. So I emailed them asking where on their website they had such a list (if one was available). I received a response with a PDF of all current United States Olympic Hall of Fame inductees. My question is: how do I use this as a citation? It's legitimate (I got it from their archivist), but it's not published online anywhere. Any assistance would be appreciated. What's the IOC's position on who "inherits" medals/records of national teams from the former Yugoslavia. For example, does the post-breakup "Yugoslavia" (essentially Serbia and Montenegro) inherit the records of the pre-breakup Yugoslavia? How about Serbia and Serbia & Montenegro? Input needed: How should this page be named?

Please have a look at this discussion. The page "Barcelona bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics" has today been moved to "Barcelona bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics". In my opinion, neither term is correct. There has never been an actual bid to host the 2022 Olympics, only an intention. An Olympic bid is an official document filed with the IOC. There is no need for the page to exist period. General principle we have been working on is that a seperate page for a bid should be created only when that bid has officially been placed with the IOC. Until then, it is crystal ballish and since any "firm intention" (as Barcelona was at one point stated as having to bid for 2022) can easily not happen, and thus it is better to wait for an official bid with any notable, properly referenced intention going on the general page. The page in question seems to have been, rightly, deleted and should stay that way. Ravendrop 05:59, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Country Pages

I remember when I used to be reading country at the xxxx Olympics pages that the flagbearer link in the infobox linked to the "xxxx Olympics Parade of Nations Page". However that has seemed to have changed. Is there away of bringing it back? Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 18:36, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi the official website has now individual nation pages for each country. I was thinking of putting an external link on the individual nation pages like this (Hong Kong as example). I believe that if you intend to use them as source of content for that page, you should add it as a "reference", using the {{cite web}} template (Hong Kong – Olympic Team. sochi2014.com. Organizing Committee of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi.); else, you can add it as as an "external link" using a style like "Hong Kong Team at Sochi 2014 Olympics". Every article about 2010 Olympics (example: Cross-country skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's team sprint) was sourced to the official website of the Olympics, http://vancouver2010.com . The website, similarly to websites of previous Olympics, died, and is now a redirect to olympic.org, which seem to only contain names of the medalists, but not all the statistics of the competitions. Any ideas (i) where can we find full statistics for the past Olympics; (ii) how can we change the links in our zillions of articles (I guess an intelligent bot is needed); (iii) can we do smth for the articles for the 2014 Olympics to avoid this problems? Most of the links added in November is already disfunctional - they point out to the start page rather than to the specific pages, and I am sure in a couple of years the website with the results will be at best redirected and at worst unavailable.--Ymblanter (talk) 22:12, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

It's always the same thing every time there's an Olympic Games. There's not much one can do besides updating the sources, unless one stores every results page from the official Games website in some sort of webreference archive like Webcite. The LA84 Foundation website has all the official Olympic Games reports (including now the 2010 Winter Games), which you can consult freely and use as source for Olympic event results. But there's always a lagging period from the end of the Olympic Games until the publication and upload of the official reports; in the meantime, you can use the reliable Sports Reference database. FYI, for hockey if you always use the IIHF as a game reference, it stays. I changed over 2010, but I don't know earlier than that. Nation Page issues

For Figure skating pairs the ISU lists pairs with the dashes (So Tessa Virtue / Scott Moir) and has the male always last. I think that is pretty solid reason for having the same here on nation pages. What do you think? Also for the events with just a final I think its appropriate to list the event is indeed a final instead of leaving the reader to guess.

So let's take Nepal for example.

Winter Olympic Nation Pages /deficit column

Hi myself and User:Raymarcbadz have a disagreement about the use of a deficit column for alpine skiing and cross-country skiing results. My notion is a) these nation pages are supposed to transcribe the results page onto individual country pages. b) Which means the deficit column which is also included in the alpine results pages along with cross country skiing should be added to the individual nation pages. This is because both sports list the deficit/time different see here and here. C) The adding of these columns do not violate WP:OLYMOSNAT. I would tend not to add the deficit. The 'Nation at XXXX Winter Olympics' pages aren't meant to carry every detail listed on the event pages; I'd never include start number/lane in speed skating races or lane numbers/reaction times in athletics races, but those might be in an event article. Take a look at figure skating articles like Figure skating at the 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's singles, and consider the amount of detail that could potentially be in every figure skating table if we just transcribe all of that over. If anything, I think these pages should probably try and be more lean, not more detailed. I think links to the relevant event articles are good, and the details can be there. Of course, I wouldn't include in that events where deficit has a more concrete effect on the race itself (eg. Nordic combined, modern pentathlon, biathlon pursuit). In those cases, where the starting deficit matters, I would probably lean to having a column for it. Edged (talk) 10:04, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Where do you draw the line though? Do you list deficit for every timed event? Why not the points events? As is, the pages provide a brief but still informative snapshot of the athletes' performance in the event. I have another issue. In figure skating, Torlek aims figure skaters in mixed gender events to have their names broken into separate lines, and arrange them alphabetically to prevent discrimination. With Sportsfan 1234's case, this user (I don't know if it's a he/she) intends figure skaters in mixed gender events to have a dash between each other and always list the females first in the lineup in which I found out that it could been as discrimination. I don't know why this user wants United States to have a separate style rules from the other nations' pages, and I don't know which rules should I follow. I'm confused and hesitated right now. But why females go first than males? Isn't the fact that the males are considered leaders. When I did formats for mixed doubles in badminton and tennis at the Summer Olympics two years ago, I arranged the males to list first before females. That is a sexist comment first of all. The ISU probably organizes women first probably to organize their system. We should follow their lead since they organize the sport after all. For figure skating idk I just followed the ISU and if that is wrong and the group agrees then I will also agree to remove the brackets etc. But the women should be listed first. Advice on Puerto Rico "participation" at the 2014 Winter Olympics

Hi guys,

We need your advise regarding a current WP:PROD on Puerto Rico at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Long story short: a Puerto Rican athlete qualified and was listed by the International Olympics Committee. However, the local Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR) did not endorse her inclusion. This is because in 2002 COPUR disenrolled the Puerto Rico Winter Sports Federation. Since then, COPUR has stated that, "Until there is a project with the seriousness it requires and a winter sports federation actually constituted, to which we can be aware of them every four years consistently, we can not endorse." (see [4] in Spanish)

The question is: should this be part of the article or should the article be a redirect to Concerns and controversies at the 2014 Winter Olympics where the aforementioned situation is explained?

If no athlete from Puerto Rico is going to be at the 2014 games, the page Puerto Rico at the 2014 Winter Olympics shouldn't exist. Seems like a similar example is Luxembourg from 2010; they qualified a couple of athletes, but one didn't pass his NOC's standards and the other was hurt before the games. There is no Luxembourg at the 2010 Winter Olympics page, and this information is included in a sentence in the 'Participating National Olympic Committees' section of the 2010 Winter Olympics article. The redirect seems like that's a good solution; I'm not even sure it warrants that much. Maybe COPUR's decision should be noted on the Puerto Rico at the Olympics page as well; seems a notable enough thing to include to me. Edged (talk) 10:12, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

I too like the idea of tooltipping the medal events for the day. Its a good compromise from how we used to bullet point a direct link to ever events page. Hello, just to reopen the question asked a week ago. Right now at Finland at the 2014 Winter Olympics there's a sort of a revert war brewing on whether the nominated athlete roster tables should exist or not, and whether the qualification process should be mentioned or not. I say yes, others no. It's relevant enough to the subject. Independent Olympians' official designation

I see the Sochi site has started using the designation "Independent Olympic Participant" (matching 1992, unlike 2000 and 2012) for athletes from India. Unlike other country pages the page seems rather unfinished, but it is the first indication I've seen of the official designation this time. Merging World record and Olympic record articles

In over 99% of the cases, a World record is also an Olympic record. So for that reason won’t it be better if articles with the Olympic records and articles with the World records at certain games be merged. All world records are also listed on the Olympic records page. So we'll get the articles “World and Olympic records set at the 20XX Summer Olympics” in stead of "Olympic records at the 20XX Summer Olympics" AND "World records at the 20XX Summer Olympics"
The current articles:

• Olympic records at the 2004 Summer Olympics, World records at the 2004 Summer Olympics
• Olympic records at the 2008 Summer Olympics, World records at the 2008 Summer Olympics
• Olympic records at the 2012 Summer Olympics, World records at the 2012 Summer Olympics

What!? In the List of world records in athletics we have but 9 events where world records were set in the Olympics. The vast majority of the records were NOT set in the Olympics, but in other competitions. The rarity of World Records at the Olympics makes this a distinct article. The Olympic Records set at the meeting are a different subject, though the World Records are a subset of that. By combining the articles, you are diminishing the significance and the simplicity of finding the distinctly notable events (a World Records set at a particular Olympics). For each event that I am involved with, we list the two records s they stood prior to the Olympic, so a reader of the results page can see the comparative significance of the result, relative to that point in time. It is awkward by date but it does get the job done. I look at Athletics first, since that is my subject. Noting earlier that the World Records are a subset of the Olympic Records, the example you gave, missed 3 of 4 World records that obviously were also Olympic Records. I'll comment, my research over the last few weeks has been dealing with a significantly lesser world meet, the Masters Athletics World Championships. As I cull through those reports, there is a section for Masters World Records set at each championship. And following there are reports of the meet record (once that became established), which is equivalent to what an Olympic Record is. As the top world meet, I would expect no less from a report on the Olympics. Its a list of the most significant performances, amongst a meet where every performance is already significant. The article Norway at the 2014 Winter Olympics like similar articles seem totally focused on the various sport's event. But what about other entries; for instance about the delegations, which politicians/royals that attend; discussion on TV coverage etc. Can I include this in this event related article, or should I start another "non-event" article? Should athletes who are listed to compete at the Olympics be categorised as actually appearing at that individual Games? For example, Japanese skier Miki Itō is listed on the 2014 women's moguls page as not starting either qualifing event. Her biography has her listed in the category Category:Freestyle skiers at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Is being listed as part of a nation's atheletes the same as being categorised as competing? Azerbaijan Parade of Nations

According to all official sources Patrick Brachner carried the flag for Azerbaijan at the Sochi Opening Ceremony. However that is not the case. By looking at the person carrying the flag I managed to match the person to Iskender Khalilov. Khalilov happens to be the president of the Winter Sports Federation of Azerbaijan. The only problem is there is no source besides a facial match I happened to find. Here is an image of him [5] and him at the opening ceremony [6]. I think we have a match. Are you referring to the List of 2014 Winter Olympics broadcasters? No we should not pare down that list to exclusively English language broadcasters. Knowing the host broadcaster in each country is important and relevant information, whether they are broadcasting in english or not. As a wikipedian, sources are everything and host broadcasters are frequently the best source for information about their domestic athletes. Translators are available. Perhaps if you want to create a column that identifies the language(s) a particular broadcaster is using, that would be valuable additional information. Hello. I can't find a comprehensive, compiled list of siblings who have participated in the Olympics. There are many ways to measure success. I can find mentions of three siblings as Olympians, but it isn't necessarily clear if they participated at the same Olympics (which year?), their individual final Olympic rankings in their sport, whether it is the same event, including their gender if it is the same discipline.

To be honest, I'm trying to figure out:

Have three sisters ever competed at same Olympic games, as individual competitors in the same discipline, and all finished in the top 12 in that same event?

Which other families have experienced extraordinary success at the Olympics?

The IOC uses modern codes to reference results all the way back to 1896. There is no need to remove codes from articles about early Games. Competition summaries

Yesterday and today, I added summaries of two competitions I watched. Both were reverted without any comments (one, two, three (actually, I re-reverted the second one thinking it was a mistake, and then saw the first one). I remember adding such summaries was perfectly fine at the 2012 Olympics, and I never got reverted. Was it smth I missed so that the summaries became unacceptble? In the end of the day, we are writing encyclopedia and not a sports handbook. There is an obvious problem with OR here, but such sumaries are much easier to source when media are available than to look for such sources after several years when someone has time.--Ymblanter (talk) 09:10, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

I for one, support your right to write a summary as you see events happen. Full disclosure: I have written many Olympic event summaries and expect to continue doing so. This is the appropriate time to write the story, when the article receives the most attention, when most of the public comes to wikipedia to seek the information you are providing.

Now YM, I'm guessing from the awkward sentence construction, English is not your first language. When you drift into a subject or in this case a language you don't know, do not be offended when someone comes back to correct or rewrite the information. This is not the case in what was done with outright removal, but really, your contributions do need to be rewritten by someone with better use of the English language. User:Raymarcbadz who seems to be having a ownership issue with articles is putting in a legend and omitting the final placement of the athlete from Hong Kong. However why is there a legend when nothing within that legend is included in the results table? Doesn't make sense. Medal tables project

I would greatly appreciate help with my project, working to bring every NOC's medal/participation table to a uniform standard. I have been working on this on and off since July 2012, and it's still about half-done at this point. Several other users have also contributed (perhaps unknowingly) and I've created a table to keep track of what's been done and what still needs work. Some articles lack medal tables altogether. Some have them in a non-uniform format, and some have the Summer table, but not the Winter. When this project is finished, each "Country at the Olympics" articles (for each NOC) will have complete medal tables with the number of athletes and rank (what I'm calling "Version 2" with updated table code and host flags). IOC medalists database reference template

FYI, the meta-template {{IOC medals}} can and should be used in the references section of Olympic medal/medalist-related lists (e.g. "List of Olympic medalists at sport", "Country at (year season) Olympics", "Year season Olympics medal table, etc.). It places automatically a cite web template with the url address pointing to the IOC medalist database, depending on the search parameter (games, country or sport). Many pages already use this meta-template, which I recently updated to match the new url address and accommodate the different search parameters. Others, still have a hardcoded cite web template that was not automatically updated and still uses the old IOC urls links; these pages could also be updated. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Olympic sports navboxes

I think many of us agree that the navbox Template:Olympic sports could be improved. In fact, the improved version already exists at another name: Template:Sports at the Olympics.

For those who were unaware, the difference in the templates as is is that the former links the top-level sports articles themselves (i.e. Athletics (sport), Ice hockey, etc.) while the latter links to the articles that describe the Olympic competitions of the sport (i.e. Athletics at the Summer Olympics, Ice hockey at the Olympic Games, etc.) As stated above, I think that the former is not very useful, while the latter is extremely useful.

Therefore I am attempting to fix this by redirecting the former template to the latter (no need to have the exact same wikitext on two different template names). But so far my edits are being reverted, citing a TfD discussion. The problem with that is that I am not going against the discussion. The TfD resulted in "keep", and I am keeping and not deleting the template.

Can we come to a consensus that my edit is appropriate, so that certain editors will stop reverting my edits.

Thing is, most Winter sports articles don't involve the Olympics - think of the huge amounts of professional WP:WikiProject Ice Hockey articles. Just think of WP Winter Sports as a way of managing the hierarchy below WP Sports, even if it's not really a project in its own right. If anything, it should be merged into WP Sports. Spanish 1980 flag

Regarding this edit and the given image – these were added in 2012 and the image was self-made by that editor (@Orange Tuesday:). I can't find any indication that this was used at the 1980 Olympics. It seems strange that Spain would use a different flag from the other Olympic boycott nations and it not be documented. My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

I've checked through Sports-Reference.com for all of the names and killed off three. Some more may be lying in this Journal of Olympic History link (up to June 2003). Foreign sources may well be required for the rest. SFB 10:26, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

I did much the same and some googling. Epaminondas Samartzidis was already dead but not noted. Nebojša Popović is also the name of an Olympic basketball player. The basketball player died in 2001, perhaps attributed to the wrong person on the other wiki. Tatyana Veinberga does not show up in sports-reference (at all) as a member of the team. There was a governor of Tula who also bears the name of Vladimir Sevryugin who died, again possibly the wrong name attribution though what little I can get out of Cyrillic the Russian wikipedia does not show a date of death, just a question mark. Medal record uniformity

Recently I have worked on many olympic athletes' articles and I have noticed that their medal record are not displayed uniformly. If you look at, for example, Michael Phelps' page, his medals are listed beginning with the earliest Olympics/World Championships, whilst at, for example, Ole Einar Bjørndalens page, they are listed beginning with the latest Olympics/WCs.

If there aren't any guidelines already put in place, we should work out some sort of consensus. Should we start with the earliest competition, or the latest? Newtonseple (talk) 03:41, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Capitalisation in templates

I just removed some excess capitalisation in Template:Footer USA Swimming 1928 Summer Olympics, and a couple of similar instances, then realised that there are probably a lot of them with the same problem (overcapitalisation, contrary to MOS:CAPS). One team or two?

In Template:Footer USA Swimming 1928 Summer Olympics - and other similar templates - the title is the singular "1928 USA Olympic swimming team", but then there are two groups "Men's team" and "Women's team". Are all of these people (men and women) a single team or two separate teams? Either the title should be the plural "teams" or the groups should not use the word "team". Either just "men" and "women" or "competition" instead of "team" (eg like Template:Footer Netherlands Swimming 1996 Summer Olympics). Mitch Ames (talk) 01:55, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

In theory the swimming team is not its own team at all but part of the overall US team... But I'd say the best suggestion is to just have the groups named as "men" and "women" which is how they are titled at articles such as United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics#Swimming - Basement12 (T.C) 12:49, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

2010 Summer Youth Olympics medal table

The ongoing GA review for 2010 Summer Youth Olympics is on hold because the medal table is unsourced. No official table was kept by the SYOGOC. Many unofficial tables from individual NOCs award mixed-NOCs medals to the countries that the athletes were from. However, the discussions at Talk:2010 Summer Youth Olympics medal table indicates a consensus for counting mixed-NOCs medals separately. Could members of this WikiProject help find a medal table from a reliable source that counts mixed-NOCs medals separately and, optionally, a reliable source that explains this discrepancy? --Hildanknight (talk) 16:21, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

The most common one like this (link) is the only one I can find. Well, the problem is that it didn't seperate Mixed NOCs (giving it to the respective nations). Are there times when it is more appropriate to use "Olympics" than "Olympic Games", or vice versa? For example, is it more appropriate to refer to the "history of the Olympic Games" or the "history of the Olympics", or are they equivalent? I suppose "Olympic Games" refers to anything about the Olympic Games held, while "the Olympics" could be a broader subject such as the broader Olympic movement? –HTD 15:29, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

My impression is that the phrases "Olympics" and "Olympic Games" are equivalent, with the latter being slightly more formal usage. When "Olympic movement" is meant, that phrase is used, or the International Olympic Committee or the particular national Olympic governing body is specifically referenced. Boldface in Template:Infobox Olympics [country]

I just noticed a bizarre inconsistency in the treatment of the "competitors=" and "sports=" parameters in the Olympics templates such as Template:Infobox Olympics Antigua and Barbuda. For the 2000 Summer Olympics and earlier, and for the Winter Olympics, nothing seems to be bolded (at least not in the examples I checked). For the 2004 Summer Olympics, the "competitors=" entry seems to be bolded. For the 2008 Summer Olympics and onwards, both the "competitors=" and "sports=" parameters are bolded. That's consistent for all countries I checked, but it doesn't make much sense. Should we de-bold everything? Should we bold everything? In the latter case, a modification of the infobox seems desirable (at the level of Template:Infobox country Olympics), wich would still mean undoing the manually-applied bolding for 2004 and later. Per the style of Template:Infobox, item labels should be bolded but item values should not. Hi guys, I have a problem with a user and I need your opinion about it. in this page Iran at the 1972 Summer Olympics, someone thinks reserve athletes are not a part of the team and they should not be considered as Olympian. just because this website Sports-References doesn't count them. just because they didn't play a single minute. to me it's very obvious that reserve players are a part of the team in team sports. in football, hockey, baseball and etc they give medal to all members of the team even if they don't play. • Mohsen, send the other editor here for discussion. Yes, the reserve members are part of the national team, but IMO they should be identified as reserves who did not play in a game or match. There is also a question whether they would receive a medal for any team that placed in the top 3. Generally speaking, reserve athletes in team competitions who did not participate in the event finals did not receive medals prior to 1984 (e.g., swimming, track & field). That's fine for the 2012 "definition", but what about 1972? Show me how some guy who turned with the atheletes who actually took part at an event, but didn't take part in any matches be classed as taking part! To expand the rationale from Mohsen's talkpage, if I went to the (football) World Cup, but sat on the bench for each game, I wouldn't get a cap. How is this any different? (edit conflict) Right you guys, cool it down a bit. Debate on the facts, not on each other's editing patterns. Thrashing at each other is just playground tactics, and should be avoided. The difference here is the World Cup and Olympics tend to have different rules. Each Olympic nation sent a team of athletes' to the games; in terms of football players, they would not know at that time that they'd be sat on the bench for the duration of the games. Nonetheless, they are still a part of their respective Olympic team. Including them is showing that they were chosen to represent their nation. But adding a note that they were reserves and never played a game, is not going to cause that much problems. By omitting them from such articles is just like saying they never attended an Olympic Games, when in actual fact they did, they just did not get to play a game. Even at a FIFA World Cup, the entire squad is named, even if not all of them get to play. Listing the full squad for the sake of the Olympics is just as important, even if not all of them got off the bench. All this just seems to be pointy and not keeping to a neutral point of view, by including the full facts, rather than partial. I just checked and for examples José Antonio Rodríguez as reserve GK didn't play a single minute, but still he is listed as 2012 Olympian, 2012 medalist, and there is nothing anywhere in wikipedia mentioning he was a reserve player. because this is the nature of team sports. there are countless examples like this mostly reserve GKs. Anyway, these articles are about the respective country at a Games and how many sportsmen/women were chosen by their Olympic committees. Irrespective of whether they got their butts off the bench and kicked the ball or not, they were selected by the Iranian Olympic Committee to represent Iran at the 1972 Munich games. Not listing them on the article, is like saying they were never at the games in physical person. If some random person visits the article and it says "Country sent 40 competitors" and then the article only lists 30 because the other 10 didn't get to take part, then we're not publishing full facts> Listing all names, and making sure it is known that not all played in a sport for one reason or another, is covering all the facts, and keeping to a neutral point of view. Okay, guys, there's no need for personalized comments from anyone. This should not be a heated discussion; reserves are part of the official Olympic national team, even if they never entered a game, match or heat. i've run into similar situations where the U.S. Olympic team took an extra reserve athlete or two for swimming and track relays, and, yes, those athletes are listed as members of the U.S. Olympic team for the particular games. Reserves tend to fall through the cracks on sites like Sports-Reference.com, etc., because they usually do not have an official list of all team members, and athletes are only listed by the events in which they participated. These are not official records, and SRO and DBO have their share of errors and inaccuracies. IMO, the only question is whether they should get an asterisked footnote (i.e., "*Reserve player, did not compete," or something to that effect). Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:20, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

I think they should be given an asterisk/footnote treatment, as their mention is just as important to the rest of the sportsperons on each article. Their NOC selected them, but it isn't their fault that they were just left hanging as a reserve. Omitting them from our articles is like discriminating them in a way, as if to say "haha you didn't play". Equal balance, showing all team members that were selected keeps within NPOV. With this I also think they should be marked as reserves if IOC don't treat them exactly the same as main members, I think this brought up another topic, maybe you should remove some of those medalists if they didn't receive medals, someone has to search about it. I tried a little and found a video in youtube about 1972 Olympics and only 12 players received medals on the podium ! probably those players who played in the final match. did they give medals to the rest of the squad later ? that's what I want to know, even though after all it doesn't change the fact that reserve members are still member of the team and should be listed but with an asterisked footnote or something like that. Lugnuts, I think FIFA is going to have the answer for that; more often than not, the IOC defers to the international sports body for the particular sport (e.g., IAAF, FIBA, FIFA, FINA, etc.) as to who is medal-eligible in the Olympics. As I mentioned above, swimmers and runners who actually competed in the preliminary heats of Olympic relay events were not medal-eligible until the 1984 Olympics. In one case in 1960, a "reserve" team of four American swimmers set a new world record in the qualifying heats and were not even medal-eligible. The trend for at least the last 30 years has been to been to award medals to "reserves". What the medal eligibility rules were for association football teams in 1972 I would not even guess. OTH, they were definitely team members. It's an odd situation; for instance, Sports-Reference.com incorrectly shows relay runners and swimmers who competed in the preliminary heats, but not the finals of pre-1984 Olympic relay events as medal winners when, in fact, the IOC did not award medals to athletes who did not run or swim in the relay event finals. Open Water swimming

I notice that open water swimming is considered as different from the indoor swimming events at the last two Olympics. The same can be said about other Multi-sporting events such as the Pan American Games. Keeping that in mind, why is it that open water swimming is merged into the swimming article, when all other aquatics disciplines get their own article? I don't follow what you mean. It is a swimming event, but by its very nature it has to be held in a separate venue. That doesn't make it "different" in a way that warrants it to be broken off into its own article. It is not considered a separate discipline by the IOC, whereas diving, water polo and synchronized swimming are.. Compare to events such as basketball or handball that occasionally use more than one venue. Or to alpine skiing where each event is held on a different track, and sometimes on completely different mountains, see as an example Alpine skiing at the 1994 Winter Olympics. There is no separate article for speed or technical skiing, but rather those are considered separate medal events within the same discipline within the same sport. That is what marathon/open water swimming is, a single separate medal even within the swimming discipline within the sport of aquatics. Ravendrop 02:39, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

I see no reason to create a separate line of articles for open water swimming, separate and apart from the existing articles for Olympic events. As things stand now, we typically have a separate article for each event anyway. As for the articles which break out the Olympics by sports (as opposed to individual events within a given sport), there is no good reason to separate "open water swimming" from "swimming," as it is simply a single event in the larger sport. 2014 Winter Olympics Parade of Nations

Is it just me, or does this table stretch beyond the standard page width despite the table having column widths defined? I am not sure why the text won't wrap appropriately to keep the page a normal width. If anyone is able to help it would be appreciated. Russian flag attached to the Finnish olympic sailing teams pre 1917.

Dear Sirs, I find it very disturbing that the Wikipedia results tables show the current Russian flag as the national symbol for Finnish sailing teams in the Olympics prior to our country's independence in 1917. • Eero, as I am sure you know, Finland (a.k.a. the Grand Duchy of Finland) was part of the Russian Empire prior to 1917, and the tsarist empire used the same tricolor flag as the present Russian Federation. The present flag of Finland only dates from 1918, and using it to represent Finnish athletes before Finnish independence in 1917 would be anachronistic and historically inaccurate. Hassan Hirt

Hi guys, at the 2012 London Games, the French athlete Hassan Hirt competed in the 5000 metres. He finished 11th in his heat and 26th overall. The race was run of 8 August and two days later he was sent home after testing positive for EPO. He was later given a two year ban which expires on 16 December 2014. My question is has the IOC retrospectively disqualified him? The results on the IAAF website lists him as DQ as does sports-reference.com. However, the official Olympic report states he finished 26th as does the IOC website. If anyone could help resolve this, it be would greatly appreciated. Ian, if he failed a test for PED and was given a two-year ban by the IAAF, then he was disqualified by the IOC. The IOC invariably defers to the international governing body for each sport in such eligibility matters. So, being DQ'ed by the IAAF is effectively the same as being DQ'ed by the IOC. Given that Hirt did not receive a medal, and did not qualify for the event final, the IOC has probably just never updated their results because there was no pressing need to do so. Kosovo at the Olympics

Now that we have Kosovo at the Olympics, I was wondering how their previous participation should be reflected in a medals table, in line with customary previous appearances under different entities, like other former Yugoslav nations. It doesn't appear that any Kosovars participated for Serbia in 1912, and they must have participated for Yugoslavia but I don't know if any Kosovar athletes participated for IOP, Serbia and Montenegro, or independent Serbia. We do have a note that a Kosovar athlete was part of Albania in 2012. Any input is appreciated.

This is on the Kosovo Olympic Committee page: "However, Kosovo did not field a team for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing or the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver due to its status. The request to participate at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was eventually rejected too;[4] the only Kosovar athlete to participate being Majlinda Kelmendi, who represented Albania." Before the declaration of independence, Kosovo was definitely a part of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro and Serbia. It's not correct to say that did not participate in that period, because there was not Kosovo as an independent entity. It doesn't matter that Olympic Committee was established in 1992. For example, Catalonia has unrecognized Olympic Committee and it would not be correct to say that athletes from Catalonia not competing, but that they compete under the Spanish flag. Sportpersons from Kosovo were able to compete under the flag of Serbia (and Montenegro) and this oportunity used by some athletes, but only by Serbs from Kosovo (Sonja Stolić, Miloš Krasić, Milan Biševac...). Many athletes to participate for Serbia have origins and parents from Kosovo (Novak Djokovic...). After declaration of independence and before recognition of Olympic Committee of Kosovo, Olympic Committee of Serbia invited athletes from Kosovo to join Serbian team and, again, this feature used only by Serbs from Kosovo (Milena Rašić). Kosovo participate under flag of Serbia (and Montenegro) as part of this country. After the declaration of independence, Kosovo is a partially recognised country, but it has independent Olympic team since 2014. Kosovar athletes are all athletes from Kosovo, Serbs or Albanians or any other. Athletes from Kosovo have participated under their recognized NOCs at that time, but only Serbs. Despite the invitation from the Serbian Olympic Committee, most Kosovo Albanians wanted to compete separately. OCS invited all athletes from Kosovo to join Serbian team. All athletes WERE ABLE to participate, but they did't want. I do not have information about Warren Brown. It might help if someone has the info in what class he competed then I can inform by the relevant class organizations. However during that era it was normal in sailing that a equip had one or more substitutes. Olympic alternates/substitutes who did not compete in an actual Olympic event are usually not listed in the various databases, even though they often appear on official national Olympic committee lists of athletes. Like you, I immediately checked Sports-Reference.com's Olympic database, and databaseOlympics.com, and found nothing -- that generally indicates the particular athlete is not listed on the IOC's current public database. It's possible that Brown's name is misspelled in in the IOC's public database (I have encountered that problem in the past), but it's hard to imagine a plausible alternate spelling of "Warren Brown." KP, if Brown's 1972 Olympic participation cannot be confirmed by another reliable source, it probably should be removed from the article altogether. This article AC35: Cup arrival a tribute to Jordy Walker from the Royal Gazette dated Dec 4, 2014 says it was Jordy Walker who competed "at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and managed the Bermuda team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona". Editor making major changes without understanding the basics

Can I ask please for help here. The issue has to do with an editor PjeterPeter (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and the changes he is doing to the following articles: diff and diff.

In the first case, the editor in question seems to think that because one Kosovar athlete, Majlinda Kelmendi, participated for Albania, that Albania thus becomes "related participation" to Kosovo. I have tried to expain to the user what related participations are, which are the COIs where the athletes and teams from that new COI participated in the past. The athletes and teams from Kosovo obviously participated in the qualifiers for the Olympics within Yugoslavia first and Serbia and Montenegro and Serbia later. The fact that an individual athlete decided to represent another country is the athletes individual choice, and not an "related participation" of an entire country. For exemple, there are numerous Kenyans being naturalized and participating for other countries, but those countries those athletes participate for, are NOT Kenyan "related participations".

The second case is pure WP:OR. The user is trying to find athletes from Kosovo that participated for Yugoslavia and then is building a table as if Kosovo participated back then. We don't make such tables for new countries (exemples Croatia, Slovenia or Macedonia participated within Yugoslavia, but at the tables list the period while they were within Yugoslavia is just marked as "part of Yugoslavia" and no medals are counted separately for each edition for that period. The user by making that different table as I showed in the diff, he is clearly misguiding the readers wanting to give the impression Kosovo participated in their own and had medals. Besides, he didn't even counted the medals as he clearly admits in his comment here: Talk:Kosovo_at_the_Olympics#MEDAL_TABLES. It all so ridiculous but the user insistingly edit-wars and even threatens people not to revert him. FkpCascais (talk) 00:01, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Majlinda Kelmendi participated under the flag of Albania. Therefore, the Albanian flag should be added to the infobox. Because it's the same for the position of Serbia. Kosovo was de facto not part of Serbia since 2008, but Serbian athletes from Kosovo decided to participate under the flag of Serbia, that's why we extended the years. Albania must remain in the infobox. You're just reverting because you're obviously a Serb. And this is a pure POLITIC added to the pages, by you. --PjeterPeter (talk) 19:50, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

If this is not about the athletes, and Majlinda *apparently* only decided by herself to compete under the flag of Albania, then the Serbian flag should also be removed, because Kosovo declared independence from Serbia before the 2008 Summer Olympics, and after that, the 'Serbian athletes from Kosovo only decided to participate for Serbia with their wish'. OK, Kosovo is de facto independent since 2008, but formaly it was not recognised as independent from Serbia at Olympics. Official IOC regulations say only that every new member must be an "independent State recognised by the international community". IOC recognized Kosovo because it is recognized as a sovereign country by more than half of UN members. see During the 2012 Summer Olympics Kosovo was recognized by less than half of UN members and IOC has not agreed to recognize OCK. Especially, during the 2008 Summer Olympics it was not recognized by enough countries. Which means that Kosovo was considered as part of Serbia. Kosovo Serbs were participated for own country, but Kosovo Albanians did't want (OCS invited athletes from Kosovo to join Serbian team). It is true that the case with Majlinda Kelmendi is specific, but she chose to represent Albania, just as numerous athletes throughout the world switch nationality. Albanian flag is debatable, but Kosovo formally was part of Serbia at Olympcs before recognition (9 December 2014) and it is fact. --Aca Srbin (talk) 14:43, 10 January 2015 (UCT)

Ukraine at the Olympics

Similarly to the recent Kosovo at the Olympics issue, Ukraine's prior participation in the medal tables has been taken to an absurd level. Ethnic Ukrainians very well may have participated for all those countries during all this time, but there has to be a better way of presenting it. Jmj713 (talk) 14:49, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Ukraine did not participate independently before 1994, so there should be no medalists from the earlier years. HandsomeFella (talk) 17:07, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

I don't think ethnic groups should be taken into account in another nation's medal table. For example a person who is ethnic Ukrainian who immigrated to/was born in the United States and won a medal for the US should not have that medal counted for Ukraine too. To whom it may concern: Recently I have added a calendar to the Wikipedia project that displays the ancient Greek Olympiads, with the number of the Olympiad, the specific year and the name of the winner of the Stadion race. U.S. Olympic track team navboxes

Good morning, Olympic sports fans. Given the relatively large number of links in U.S. Olympic track and field navboxes such as Template:Footer USA Track & Field 2012 Summer Olympics, might it not be better if the track team navboxes were split by gender? The U.S. track athlete navboxes have over twice as many links as the comparable navboxes for U.S. Olympic swimming teams (2012: 134 track vs. 59 swimming). I might also suggest that we remove the red links for the U.S. Olympic Trials from the navboxes for the older U.S. Olympic track teams, unless and until someone creates those articles. I initiated this discussion on the user talk page of TonyTheTiger, one of the principal creators and contributors to these templates, and he suggested I move the conversation here to initiate a wider discussion. Splitting a navbox such as {{Footer USA Track & Field 2012 Summer Olympics}} by gender into two halves seems to make sense to me.
