Biography

edit

He was born in 1954 in Makalevychi [uk] village, Zhytomyr region, Ukraine.[5] Pavlenko graduated from Kyiv University in 1976 with a Master's degree in Astronomy and Physics.[6] He was a student of Mykola Avenirovych Yakovkin, a son of Avenir Aleksandrovich Yakovkin.[7]

Career

edit

During the period of 1979—1982, Pavlenko was employed as an Aspirant at Tartu Observatory (Estonia), where he received a Candidate of Sciences degree in Astrophysics and Radioastronomy шт 1984.[8][9][10][11]

Starting in 1983, Pavlenko become a permanent employee at the Main Astronomy Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine [uk] (MAO NASU).

Since 1989, Pavlenko has collaborated with the research group on Exoplanets and Astrobiology of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).[12][13]

Since 1994, he was a Senior Research Fellow at MAO NASU.

On 3 October 1996, Pavlenko received a Doctor of Science degree in Astrophysics and Radioastronomy at MAO NASU.

Since 2005, Visiting Research Fellow at University of Hertfordshire, UK.[5]

On 16 May 2013, during his annual stay visit at IAC[13], Pavlenko held a seminar talk[14][15] on Molecular Astrophysics.[16][17]

In June 2015, the collaborative research work «The Search for Exoplanets at U.Chile» was presented at ESO Exoplanet Focus Meeting in Vitacura.[18]

Since 2017, Pavlenko headed up the Department of Physics of Substellar and Planetary Systems of MAO NASU.[19]

On 15 January 2020, Mario Damasso and colleges published a paper[20] on the discovery of Proxima Centauri c, the second exoplanet near Proxima Centauri.[21] To exclude fluctuations in spectrum resulted of red dwarf flare activity, Damasso used research work[22] done by Yakiv Pavlenko and other fellows at IAC on analysing spectrography data of HARPS mission.[23][24][25]

Red dwarfs has wide developed convection zones, where magnetic fields are forming. So, for them stellar flares are tipical (by analogy to the flares on Sun). [...] From another side, red dwarfs are low mass objects, thats why their movement is a more sensitive to existience of exoplanets.

— Yakiv Pavlenko, Proxima Centauri could be a home for the second planet [updated], 16 January 2020, https://scienceukraine.com/cosmos/proxima-c-candidate/

In April 2022, a paper with the results of exocomets research and discovery of 5 new exocomets,[26] written by Pavlenko together with few other fellows at MAO NASU, was published in Astronomy & Astrophysics journal.[27][28]

During 1 September — 25 November 2022, Pavlenko visited IAC devoted to model the atmospheres of brown dwarf and exoplanets objects.[13][29]

On 22 March 2023, Pavlenko become Chief Research Fellow at the Department of Physics of Substellar and Planetary Systems of MAO NASU.[30] Same year, Pavlenko joined the «Science At Risk!» project as an expert.[31]

Science at Risk is a digital platform and community of Ukrainian scientists suffering from Russia's military aggression. We are telling the world how Ukrainian scientists and institutions are coping with the challenges of war and accumulating unique expertise in crisis management. And we also help donors, journalists, foreign scientists and other interested parties to establish contacts with Ukrainian specialists.

In July 2024, at the International scientific conference «Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine — 1944 and beyond. Impact of international cooperation.», commemorated to the 80th Anniversary of MAO NASU, Pavlenko presented results of his research work, done together with British astrophysicists, on spectral analysis of the Proxima Centauri.[32][33][34]

  Obituary (21 October 2024)

On 21 October 2024, Yaroslav Yatskiv [uk] published obituary on MAO NASU site, revealing Yakiv Pavlenko has passed away on 19 October 2024, at age of 70.[35]

During the career, Yakiv Pavlenko published more than 300 papers[36], was a participant of dozens of international meetings, schools and oral talks[16], was a lecturer[37], adviser[38][39][40] and examiner[41], participied in few international programs and received grants from FP (2009—2013) and a scholarship from MSCA4Ukraine[5][31][42], was one of editors at the Kinematics and Physics of Celestial Bodies [uk] journal[43][44][45].

Yakiv Pavlenko is survived by his wife Olena Pavlenko [uk], Ukrainan[46][47] and Russian[48] astrophysicist, and their mutual daughter.[5]

Programs

edit

Pavlenko curated two European programs of the 7th research program at MAO NASU[29]:

  • RoPACS — Rocky Planets Around Cool Stars (2009—2012)[49][50][51]

Quotes

edit
  • “I use definition of molecular astrophysics to describe complex of tools and procedures used to determine the spectroscopic properties of molecules.”[13]
  • “We cannot get any reliable results of late type stars, brown dwarfs and exoplanets’ spectra without account of molecular opacities.”[13]
  • “The study of very high quality molecular lines requires the development of large international projects to calculate perfect molecular data such as HITRAN and EXOMOL.”[13]

Yakiv Pavlenko in own talks and lectures often cited[63][64][65][66] the introduction sentence from Virginia Trimble and Roger A. Bell's 1981 paper, claiming it as his favourite quote:

Astronomy often progresses amoeba-like; the advance in one pseudopod may not move the animal very far, but permits other parts to advance in their turn and can reveal portions of the organism that are in danger of being left behind.
