Dungsey Namgay Dawa Rimpoche is a Vajrayana Buddhist Master and is the lineage holder of the Dudjom Tersar Lineage in Nyingma Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in North America and Europe[1]; He is the Spiritual Director and custodian of the Dudjom Tersar Yeshey Nyingpo Temple in Manhattan, New York and Orgyen Cho Dzong Retreat in GreenVille New York, which is one of the main and oldest seat of the Nyinmga School of Buddhist teaching in the West.[2] He is the grandson of His Holiness Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje and has been recognized by Dudjom Rinpoche himself as the reincarnation of Garwang Sangye Dorji a great Nyingma and Buddhist master who was himself a teacher to Dudjom Rimpoche. [3] His father is Shenphen Dawa Norbu Rimpoche (born 17th February 1950), the son of Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje who was the reincarnation of Taksham Tulku and was the previous custodian of the lineage in the West until his passing in 2018.[4] Dungsay Namgay Dawa's mother is Ashi Pema Choden Wangchuck a princess of Bhutan, member of the Wangchuck dynasty and daughter of the second king of Bhutan His Majesty Jigme Wangchuck. Early Life & Family
editDungsay Namgay Dawa Rimpoche was born on 21st October 1974 in the Water Tiger Year, he is the elder of the two sons born to Shenphen Dawa and Ashi Pema, his younger brohter is Kathok Sithu Rimpoche who is 5th in line of the Kathok Sithu Incarnation Line. He had a normal upbringing as per the wishes of his Royal mother who wanted him to have an ordinary life against the wishes of his paternal grandfather Dudjom Rinpoche who had prophecised before his birth about his dharmic life. He studied at the St. Paul's School, Darjeeling , at the Lungtenzampa School, Punakha High School and then at a Bahai School in Maharashtra. He attended Penor Rimpoche's Namdroling Monastery for a year in India and later studied at a Nyingma Monastery in Nepal. He had a diversed education having been educated in a Bahai, a Christian School and a Buddhist School.[6]
It wasn't until he was 19 when one day in Thimphu about 3 monks met him in the town and after confirming if he was son on Shenphen Dawa immediately prostrated infornt of him that he began realizing his spiritual path; Initially he was confused and told the monks that they might've mistaken him for his younger brother who was by then already in high regard and been following his Dharmic life for sometime.[7]
Despite having a normal upbringing he eventually had transcended into Spiritual path gradually.Some 20 years after he first began following the path of Dharma, and after the passing of his father the late Holiness Shenphen Dawa in 2018, Rimpoche accpeted his destiny and took incharge of the Dudjom Lineage's legacy and activities in the America's and Europe.[8]
From his paternal side he is a first cousin to Khyentse Norbu Rinpoche a buddhist master and film maker; Khyentse Norbu is the son of his uncle Thinley Norbu Rinpoche who is the younger brother to his father. [9] From His mother's side he is a first cousin to His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck the fourth Druk Gyalpo and a cousin uncle to His Majest Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck ; Therefore his maternal grand father is the third druk gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck . While his paternal grandfather is Dudjom Rinpoche .
Current Works
editAt present H.E Dungsay Namgay Dawa Rinpoche resides in New York at the Dudjom Tersar Yeshey Nyingpo Temple in Manhattan New York, located at 19 W 16th St, which is the oldest Buddhist institute in North America established in the year 1976. He is the custodian of the temple and the retreat center Orgyen Chodzong located in GreenVille New York. He as well over sees the operations of the activities in the Yeshey Nyinpo Center of California and Denver in the US and Spain and France . He travels between these centers and give teachings and mass empowerments. [10] Nyingma school being the oldest of the 4 major schools of Tibetan Buddhism and with one of the largest followers specially in the Western Hemisphere His Eminnence Dungsay Namgay Dawa Rinpoche shoulders a major responsibility.
