The July 2023 Guayaquil prison riot occurred on 25 July 2023 at the overcrowded Litoral Penitentiary/Guayas 1 Prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador, killing at least 31 and injuring 14 people. Two days later, around 2,700 soldiers from the Ecuadorian Armed Forces stormed the prison to establish order.[1][2]

A few days after the riot, at least 11 fully intact bodies were recovered in from the prison along with dozens of limbs, heads, and other body parts.[3]

The Prison Observatory, a prisoners' rights monitor, claimed that the prisoners at Guayas 1 Prison had been deprived of food and water for more than three days prior to the riot.[1]
