During this era of warfare, naval engagements were common and repeatedly resulted in the capture of enemy vessels. These ships were often renamed and subsequently incorporated into the capturing nation's navy. Merchant ships were also seized and repurposed for military service.

She wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod two months later, taking Bellamy, 143 men, and 4.5 tons of treasure with her – and was the first pirate ship wreck ever discovered in North America, in 1984.
