Frankly as a GA reviewer (I have GA reviewd 20+ articles in the past), I think the article is not close to GA and is a "quick-fail", I suggest a withdrawal.

"Broad in its coverage" in Wikipedia:Good article criteria is a fail, as the article does not really discuss the noteworthy medal winners, how many events in each category (say Boxing), men's events, women's events, "Calendar" similar to 2008 Summer Olympics, Broadcasting, how many people attended etc. --Redtigerxyz Talk 11:30, 3 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Second look

edit

As requested, I looked at the article again after my recent peer review. Many things I suggested there still need to be done, so first I will copy things from the peer review that still need to be fixed (or have not all been fixed):

  • Article has a lot of short (one or two sentence) prargaphs and sections that need to either be combined with others or perhaps expanded to improve article flow.
  • Article needs more references, for example the stadium sections are largely unreferenced. My rule of thumb is that every quote, every statistic, every extraordinary claim and every paragraph needs a ref.
  • Internet refs need URL, title, author if known, publisher and date accessed. {{cite web}} and other cite templates may be helpful. See WP:CITE and WP:V
  • Make sure to provide context for the reader - who came up with the idea for the games originally?

New concerns

  • The official website is at least partially on http://www.archive.org - see here for their earliest archived version.
  • Look at the Good Article comments above and fix them too
  • There are several images in the article that seem like they could be used as a lead image

Once you actually fix things I have pointed out already, I will be glad to take a third look. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:51, 28 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions

edit

Wow, what a transformation! Great job. But still some things need to be done for GA:

  • Figures like dates, amounts of money; quotes need references. Things which are controversial or acn be challenged like "Slow preparations led to indefinite postponement again" need references
  • Highlights still has the expansion. It can be expanded. (not necessary for B)
  • Will examine the references for WP:RS quality and comment here

--Redtigerxyz Talk 14:04, 3 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Most references do not have the publisher, author, publication date details etc. Please fill them.
  • Ref 14 references wikipedia. Internal reference to wikipedia is not considered reliable. The references to newspapers like Hindu, Tribune and rediff used here are reliable IMO.

Ruhrfisch comments

edit

As requested I have taken another look at the article. I think it is close to, but not yet at B-class, looking at the criteria [[1]]. Here are some more suggestions for improvement:

  • The lead is 5 paragraphs, but WP:LEAD says it should be at most 4
  • The article does not follow WP:MOSNUM consistently on numbers - those ten and under are usually spelled out, as are numbers at the start of a sentence
  • Agree that this needs more references in several places. For example, what does The 1st Afro-Asian Games were the first time that Asia and Africa came together for such a large event. really mean? It has no ref, but needs one (as an extraordinary claim). My guess is that more nations from each continenet attend the Olympics, so the statement needs to be qualified as well as back up with a ref.
  • My rule of thumb is that every quote, every statistic, every extraordinary claim and every paragraph needs a ref.
  • Refs given do not list the publisher (internet refs) in many cases
  • Why does the Calendar section table list Ceremonies twice (first and last row)? Seems like only one row is needed.
  • File:Uhseal.png is Fair use only and needs a WP:Fair use ratrionale to be used here, to be honest I doubt its use here meets WP:NFCC
  • Language needs some cleanup. for example does this sentence really add anything to our understanding of the games Just like the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony of the Afro-Asian Games ended in a ceremonious way.?
  • Also watch out for POV languagelike surprisingly and dismal in Surprisingly however, a dismal number of athletes trooped into the Stadium for that purpose.[30]

Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:05, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Comments in accordance to GA criteria

edit

This is NOT the official GA review (I am active member of WP India, with which this article is associated). These are just suggestions in accordance with GA criteria.

  • "History" does not say why was Gachibowli/Hyderabad selected as the venue.
  • If there was no "Games Village" as stated in accommodation, then how is this possible?: "over 5000 city policemen were deployed in various places, including the event venues and the Games Village." --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:33, 13 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer: Wizardman Operation Big Bear 19:32, 25 February 2010 (UTC) Upon reviewing this article, I'm noticing a lot of issues, listed below:Reply

  • You note in the first sentence the names used, but the infobox has "I Afro Asian Games". Change it to one of the other terms.
  • "Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad, played a crucial role in these Games. With a combined population of nearly four million people, Hyderabad-Secunderabad is one of the largest urban megalopoleis in the World." This feels out of place in the first lead paragraph. Maybe reword saying that it took place in Secunderabad/Hyderabad?
  • "These Games, however, had lesser scope than the Asian Games or Commonwealth Games, since 96 nations participated in only eight sports." This feels misleading, since above you note it was eight disciplines, rather than sports.
  • "All preparations were completed in a record 60 days before the events began." What kind of record do we mean here? A little confusing, that part's probably unnecessary.
  • In the transport section, the first paragraph just feels like a slightly less detailed version of the second. Combine the two and have it flow better since it repeats itself a bit.
  • The 9/11 reference in the logo section doesn't seem necessary to me.
  • Some of the articles in the Sports section go to at the 2003 Afro-Asian games, but others go to the general term. What I'd like to see are sections for each part; Those with the sub-article wouldn't need much of a section, but for those that don't have one, information can be added to this article.
    • By extension, when that's added in the highlights section can be added in the appropriate areas.
  • "The opening and closing ceremonies were described as "gala" and "fabulous" by several media centers. " Cite needed for quotes.
  • There's not really structure to the opening ceremony section; it's just a slew of one and two sentence chunks. They can be combined into two nice paragraphs.
  • The quote near the bottom of the Closing ceremony section is hiding some of the text. A different quote box might be better. I'll review the closing and highlights section when that's fixed since I can't read parts of them.
  • When referencing, make sure to include publishers, and dates or authors if possible, as well as the url/title/accessdate. Most just have the first three, which is okay but for GA I'd prefer they be as detailed as they can.
  • Lastly, what was the impact afterwards, both regionally and internationally? I'm sure there's plenty on that since this was the first one.

This is definitely not a bad article. The technical aspects in particular are impressive. However, I am finding that a lot more needs to be added and modified to be a GA. I'm tempted to fail the article now, particularly for the sports section note, but I'll put it on hold for a week to see if you can get at least most of the issues fixed. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 19:32, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

So far so good, just wrap up those last couple points. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 15:35, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

A number of issues with this article have been rectified. To make them clear, I shall strike out all those issues that have already been clarified :-
