Britannia Stadium - change of name

edit

I've just noticed that there has been a note added to the stadia section against the Stoke City ground (currently known as the Britannia Stadium) to not change the name to the bet365 Stadium because wikipedia avoids sponsor names. I have two issues with this approach to this specific instance.

  1. The current name is already a sponsor name (after the Building society)
  2. There are a number of other examples where this hasn't been applied (take a look at the current championship season page I counted 4)

If we are going to do this it needs to be consistent. => Spudgfsh (Text Me!) 15:05, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome to take this up at WT:FOOTY (believe it was discussed recently). Basically we avoid sponsornames (which exists temporarily) and use the well known and already established names (with some exceptions). The same applies Dean Court, which is not "Vitality stadium" in our articles. Qed237 (talk) 15:31, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Regarding the "Britannia Stadium" already being a sponsor name, that is true. but it has been the name of the stadium since the start and it is the original name and the commonname for the stadium. I can not account for all articles I am not watching, like Championship article, and it feels a bit like WP:OSE, but of course we should be consistent. Qed237 (talk) 15:35, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

There's even an anomaly within the Premier League list. The Etihad Stadium is a sponsored name; the non-sponsored name is the City of Manchester Stadium. The King Power Stadium is a sponsored name - it was originally the Walkers Stadium. As hideous as the "Bet365 Stadium" sounds, the fact is, it's no longer the Britannia Stadium (as Britannia itself was a sponsor). — Preceding unsigned comment added by ABMOT (talkcontribs) 12:52, 3 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Brittania Stadium -- bet365 Stadium

edit

Hi, I found out that there is something wrong on the stadium chart. While it says that the Brittania Stadium would be changed to bet365 Stadium, in the chart it still says "Brittania Stadium". I think that it should be edited ASAP. Thanks Anonymous Douglas491 (talk) 08:02, 8 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Factual inaccuracy in location column

edit

I have removed the location column from the 2016-17 Premier League as the information listed was factually incorrect. Manchester United are based in the metropolitan borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester - hence the reason it's called Old Trafford. If the location column is to remain then the correct location should either be Trafford or Greater Manchester but that would open a pandora's box on which is preferable (i.e. constant changing and incorrect edits to Manchester) and so I have removed the location column for avoidance of doubt. Stevo1000 (talk) 18:59, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

If something is wrong, then correct it instead of removing thew entire section. Qed237 (talk) 19:11, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm getting a little bit sick of Stevo1000 and his constant complaints about Manchester United being referred to as coming from Manchester. To all intents and purposes, most people don't know the difference between Manchester and Trafford, and if you asked anyone outside the North West where Manchester United were from, I guarantee 99.9% of them would say Manchester. The clue is in the name after all. But the biggest clue for me that this isn't about factual accuracy but more of a criticism of United and their fans "not being from Manchester" is that Stevo isn't complaining about Arsenal, Chelsea and Crystal Palace being referred to as being from London (instead of Holloway, Fulham and South Norwood) respectively. It's exactly the same situation. – PeeJay 11:10, 25 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
The feeling is mutual. You are openly advocating ill-informing readers with factual inaccuracies. I have done nothing but make sure this page is factual. As stated in its aims, Wikipedia is an encyclopedic reference and needs to present facts. You have summarised this point perfectly by saying "most people don't know the difference between Manchester and Trafford" - rather than enlightening people about this and making it clear they are different Metropolitan Boroughs, you are inferring they are both the same when they are not. By inferring Trafford is in Manchester you are also effectively saying the City of Salford, Stockport and the other 6 metropolitan boroughs are actually part of the City of Manchester - which is completely incorrect. Go the Trafford Centre, Old Trafford Cricket Ground, MediaCityUK and even the Old Trafford page itself - are they listed as being in Manchester? No - so why are you trying to dispute a fact? Regarding the London clubs, all boroughs are known as London Boroughs - hence why they are commonly referred to as being simply in London. Whereas Greater Manchester consists of 10 Metropolitan Boroughs which are separate entities in their own right (i.e. Manchester is not Salford and Salford is not in Manchester but they are part of Greater Manchester). You're seeing this from a football perspective and I think you should stick to that because you are good at that but I'm seeing this from a factual geographic perspective from having lived in area. Stevo1000 (talk) 20:07, 25 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not trying to be pedantic here, But Manchester United are in Manchester (the County of Greater Manchester not the city) like all the London Teams are in London (the County of Greater London, not the City). I don't notice anyone complaining that e.g., that Spurs are not in London, but the borough of Harringey. In fact Chelsea are not even in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, but in Hammersmith and Fulham.46.7.195.132 (talk) 16:56, 29 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I believe it is done for the La Liga and Bundesliga pages, so (I ask out of curiosity) why is the consensus not to do it for the Premier League page? KP-TheSpectre (talk) 20:40, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Because there aren't any reliable sources for what an assist is, much less who has the most assists in the Premier League. – PeeJay 14:03, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

The Premier League lists assists. As they are the governing body with statisticans covering multiple events in every match such as number of blocks, tackles, interceptions, minutes played by very individual player etc, there is a case for saying that they are an accurate source Only problem is that seasons data is usually deleted by about mid-June.46.7.195.132 (talk) 17:03, 29 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Take the 'AFC' off Bournemouth's name

edit

I can't understand why this is enforced on this page, and the previous seasons for that matter. It is the equivalent to putting FC after all the other clubs, which is not something that is done. Its left in for Bournemouth alone, and it just looks messy.

KP-TheSpectre (talk) 20:38, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

A lot of football referencing - both on Wikipedia and in the wider world - revolves around how teams are commonly referred to rather than what their correct name is. The vast majority of teams are never referenced with "Football Club"/"F.C." on the ends of their names, but for the rare few which have "AFC" at the start, it seems to have evolved into common practice to refer to them by "AFC <team name>". I'm not certain but I'm fairly sure that's why it gets accepted here too. Falastur2 Talk 22:18, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

Some time ago, I had added a positions by round table, which was then promptly deleted. The same thing has just happened again with another user. No clear reason was ever given. European Qualification

edit

Now that all 4 FA Cup finalists are in the Top Six, the 7th spot in the league (now Everton) should show as Europa League qualifying Round, 6th place should show Group stage. This is how it is done on all other league wikipedia (Bundesliga, la liga etc) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.15.100.121 (talk) 23:33, 13 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Footnote a regarding European qualification

edit

"Jump up ^ Since the four 2016–17 FA Cup semifinalists (Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur) and the 2016–17 EFL Cup winners (Manchester United) are all currently in the top 7 of the Premier League table, all of the top 7 teams would qualify for European competition. However, the round that Arsenal and Everton would qualify for in the Europa League would depend on who the FA Cup winner is. If Arsenal win the FA Cup, they would qualify for the group stage while Everton would qualify for the third qualifying round. If a team other than Arsenal wins the FA Cup, Everton would take the group stage berth with the third qualifying round berth going to Arsenal."

And what happens if West Brom, Southampton or Watford overtake Arsenal and/or Everton into the top 7? 86.186.105.99 (talk) 19:16, 16 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Man United X/Q tag

edit

Surely given Man United can still qualify for the Champions League (if they win the Europa League), they should have a "X" tag next to them in the table, as opposed to the Q tag. The legend states

(Q) Qualified to the phase indicated; (X) Assured of at least Europa League, but may still qualify for Champions League.

And they are at a minimum guaranteed Europa, but may still hit Champions League. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.58.120.8 (talk) 23:42, 16 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

At the moment they have actually qualified for Europa League (even if they might forfeit their spot in that competition they have qualified according to the rulebook). Qed237 (talk) 12:23, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Best Goalkeeper.

edit

Should that heading not be changed to "Most Clean Sheets"? The fact that Courtois had the most clean sheets does not mean that he was the best. His peers from the PFA awards named De Gea in the team of the year. Another factor is that he conceded 30 goals in 36 games (.83 per game) and Lloris conceded 24 in 32 games (.75). That being the case, there are at least two reasons to call into question, use of the word "best". In this case, "best" is subjective. 46.7.195.132 (talk) 16:38, 29 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

In this case, you probably ought to post a message on Template talk:Infobox football league season. This change will affect a lot more pages than just this one, so we need a more centralised discussion. – PeeJay 17:09, 29 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Flags

edit

I've noticed that the flag issue has been a problem on the latter two Premier League pages and most users feel that the flags are not necessary, so to make every Premier League page alike, I was suggesting that we should remove the flags of managers from every Premier League page since the managers and players are not representing their nations. What do you think? TB Chigz (talk) 05:58, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

First Division

edit

The "Division 1" label did indeed go beyond 1992 but is not still going on today. League One is not the same thing. Championship is different altogether. But we are talking about top tier football identified by qualification into Europe. Leeds had this in 1992-93. This is why I used the word "notwithstanding" as a disclaimer. So now the article reflects the facts. --D Gums (talk) 10:29, 10 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

What are you talking about? The old first division (the pre-1992 top tier) is now known as the Championship. Anyway, the statement in this article refers to teams attempting to defend the Premier League title, which Leeds have never won, and therefore the statement doesn't belong in this article. – PeeJay 10:46, 10 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I didn't say Leeds won the premier. I said they won the last year's top tier, and subsequently finished lower in the PREMIER LEAGUE than any team playing in Europe the same season as last season's champions. You are arguing against a revision that dealt with your concerns so please stop behaving like your clock is still set at three hours ago. --D Gums (talk) 12:51, 10 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Right, but the sentence is talking about the worst ever defence of a Premier League title, not "the worst since year Y". If we start talking about different competitions, it becomes a different stat altogether. – PeeJay 13:21, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes but it is a related stat that anyone can see as relevant to the topic. --D Gums (talk) 07:29, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm with PJ. There have been English top division champions relegated the following season, so if we are ignoring the change to PL, then the Leeds performance isn't the worst defence of title ever. I think this is too convoluted to include. Spike 'em (talk) 17:53, 21 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
