AC/DC Wikiportal and TFA

I'd seen the Rush Wikiportal and I was thinking of starting an AC/DC one, what are everyone else's thoughts? Also, when does everyone think it'd be a good time to nominate AC/DC for Todays featured article? I was thinking sometime when their new album comes out in the Summer (least I think it's the Summer), what does everyone else think? ĤĶ51Łalk 21:54, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Just created the AC/DC portal. ĤĶ51Łalk 23:16, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I forgot, I nominated the article to TFA (Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests#AC/DC). No-Bullet (TalkContribs) 22:54, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

No worries, might be better to have a sooner date anyway! ĤĶ51Łalk 12:15, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

I have a question: Where is Rarities? Rare/Rarer/Rarest? Bon sings Back in Black, Blackballed, Carry Me Home, plus stuff as the Valentines. ??? Don't tell me it doesn't exist. I have it. (This album Rare/Rarer/Rarest is a bootleg CD as far as I am aware)

Reference 58

Sounds like a good movie title huh? Lol. No but seriously Reference 58 is broken, ive heard this as a rumor, and even though personally I dont think this fact needs to be on this article, it should least have a proper reference. --Ferdia O'Brien 01:54, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

The link is broken, but the reference is fine, it can be replaced with template:cite news. I'm searching for another link. No-Bullet (TalkContribs) 02:50, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Fixed. Check if it works for you. No-Bullet (TalkContribs) 02:58, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Nice one. And i never daubted the origional reference, I was just saying that this isnt exactly relevent to the artical. Its infinatly more relevent to the Slane article.--Ferdia O'Brien 04:13, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Ok, no problem. I'll also add the info to the slane concert article. Cheers :) No-Bullet (TalkContribs) 04:57, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Grammar (is/are)

Okay, it doesn't matter if AC/DC consists of more than one person; when you're talking about the band as a whole (as in ONE BAND), you use IS, not ARE (like, "The band IS ranked..." not "The band ARE ranked..."

I'm going to change all these is/are mistakes, and I'll be very frustrated if someone changes them back. Helltopay27 23:19, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

This has already been discussed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:AC/DC/Archive04#Plurality. ĤĶ51Łalk 14:39, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Note that this is STILL an issue for certain people... WP:ENGVAR exists, and it is there to be adhered to. Bretonbanquet 22:27, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
I've noticed, this is stupid. I've been on wikibreak ages and I find this kinda stuff still goes on. I'm so sick of discussing it! ĤĶ51Łalk 11:08, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

AC/DC

AC/DC IS A HARD ROCK BAND AND SOME OF THERE SONGS ARE HEAVY METAL BUT HOW THEY ARE BLUES ROCK...... AC/DC'S NEWER ALBUMS ARENT AS GOOD AS THE OLD ONES....... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.162.152.150CXz<v ,CX. VVB<mcx MdlfnB.152.150|contribs) 01:48, 23 February, 2007 (UTC).

Listen to Powerage, "Ride On", "Crabsody in Blue" (if you can find it), and a lot of other Bon Scott-era stuff. It's all undoubtedly blues-rock. ĤĶ51Łalk 20:23, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Exactly. the 76-78 albums are very much blues-based rock. Those two songs HK51 mentions are practically straight blues. The later stuff is also blues-rock, but to a lesser extent. Bretonbanquet 21:30, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Posting this question here, because I feel the subject is sort of related to the above. Since when is "You Shook Me All Night Long" a metal song? Personally, I've always regarded that particular song as one of their more bluesy songs. Any opinions? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.232.114.123 (talk) 16:09, 25 February 2007

Is it possible that maybe they have shifted from Blues Rock to Hard Rock over the years? :) Thats my opinion of it anyway, Ride On is blues to the core, but Thunderstruck hardly is etc etc. Maybe we should add both genres to the infobox, with some sort of reference to the shift in the article. --Ferdia O'Brien 18:32, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

you shook me all night long is like classic rock not no blues rock.......... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.162.159.11 (talk) 19:52, 28 February 2007

Melbourne

I can't believe there is so little mention of the band's time in Melbourne in this article. They spent much all of their formative years in Melbourne when the Young's moved from Sydney in 1974. (see: http://www.mtv.com/#/music/artist/acdc/bio.jhtml) I do not think that "formed in Sydney" gives an accurate representation of the formation of the band. From the MTV site: "AC/DC was formed in 1973 in Australia (i.e. Sydney) by guitarist Malcolm...the band played some gigs around Sydney...While still in Sydney...(they) cut a single called "Can I sit next to you"" "The band moved to Melbourne the following year (i.e 1974), where drummer Phil Rudd...and bassist Mark Evans joined the band...Bon Scott became their lead singer" While the band was formed in Sydney they formed the "AC/DC sound" in Melbourne. I can't think of a way of easily slipping this in without making some major changes, so some help would help :D.

AC/DC Refusal to give Download Rights?

I checked on Napster and Rhapsody. And by the appearnce of it AC/DC didn't give any download sites permission make their songs avalible. [The only song avalible was Big Gun performed for Last Action Hero, which to perform for the movie they would've had to given up the rights to] —The preceding unsigned comment was added by FinalWish (talkcontribs) 00:59, 3 March 2007.

#1 U.S. single?

The article lists U.S. chart positions for AC/DC's singles, based on claims on the band's website. For example, it states that "Big Gun" was #1. However, a look at the Billboard Hot 100, the leading U.S. chart (and the one implied when a U.S. chart position is gven), shows that it was not. If it was Adult Contemporary or Airplay or one of the other secondary charts, this needs to be clarified. But AC/DC's own website is a secondary, and probably less reliable, source. some sin for nuthin'

where in the world do you think that the new album is some sin for nuthin'? the only name i heard of it is a song from Blow Up Your Video. the title is probably a bootleg. bootlegs don't count for discography. the title isn't cited either. someone who put it there should give a citation before it gets removed, according to WP:CITE. peace out! AC/DC Genres

AC/DC's number one genre should definetly be Heavy Metal since they qualify under every category to be Heavy Metal...1# Heavy Distorted Guitar, #2 Blues style soloing, #3 Lyrics pertaining to either occult or counterculture, #4 Music you can "headbang" to...They are also Blues Rock, Hard Rock, and you can even put them under Rock and Roll. AC/DC isn't headbanger music, it just has a very hard sound that's cool.----

The only two genres AC/DC has ever accepted are Rock and Roll and Hard Rock. --68.51.88.109 23:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Two things, put your signature first of all. Also, metal is usually uninfluenced by blues. Captanpluto123 22:20, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Heavy metal as a genre

I really don't care what bull "agreement" you reached here; they match the definition of "metal" in every aspect.

[1] (called a metal band several times) [2] (please look under "styles")

Helltopay27 23:33, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

I pulled this from the wikepedia article on hard rock.
"During the 1970s, hard rock inspired a new genre of music known as "heavy metal." The emergence of this genre has led to confusion between hard rock and heavy metal bands, as the distinctions between the two are usually subtle, and the distinction often comes down to a band's image, rather than its songs. The two genres have some crossovers, for example; heavy metal pioneers, such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, are often considered both heavy metal and hard rock, whereas, bands such as AC/DC, Aerosmith,Thin Lizzy,Bon Jovi,Nazareth,Van Halen and KISS, are normally referred to as hard rock."
AC/DC has never accepted the label heavy metal. They also have never fit into the dark and occultish image that was carried by true heavy metal bands such as judas priest, slayer, and accept.

Captanpluto123 23:47, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Well, let's see:
      • That little ditty from the hard rock article is unsourced, so someone who happens to have that stance could have put it in for shits and giggles. In fact, most music sources I've seen DO label AC/DC as heavy metal
      • The article on KISS lists them as heavy metal. Why aren't you up in arms about that?
      • We've been over the "AC/DC never called themselves metal" angle. If it looks like a dog, walks like a dog, barks like a dog, and acts like a dog, it's probably a dog. Deep Purple didn't consider their music metal, either, and their article has it listed as one of their genres
      • Judas Priest, Slayer, and Accept are all different types of metal. Judas Priest was NWOBHM, which was much darker metal than the metal of the godfathers of the genre; Slayer is thrash metal bordering on death metal, and is completely different than other "heavy metal" bands, including Led Zeppelin; Accept was speed metal, which is very similar to thrash metal. Not all metal has "dark and occult" images.
In short, your argument is moot. Helltopay27 18:53, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Hey hey hey. AC/DC is not metal. It's hard rock, blues and rock'n roll. Even if the music got a little bit harder on the 80's it hasn't never been metal... KingCfr
You insult Ac/DC everytime you talk about them as metal. They are Rock. Read about there roots dumb asses.
It doesn't have to do with how hard the music is, it has to do with the style and image of the band. ACDC is just as hard as any heavy metal band even tho they sound and look completely different.

Captanpluto123 23:47, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

    • What are you talking about? Of course it has to do with how the music sounds! Their music matches every characteristic of a "heavy metal band". Name one aspect of their music that doesn't match the characteristics of "heavy metal".
    • As for their "image", come on. I mean, if Black Sabbath dressed as ballerinas and went to the opera, would that mean that their music is classical, not heavy metal? If I dress my dog up as a cat, does that mean that it's a cat?
    • Besides, the image of AC/DC matches a heavy metal description anyway: tough, gruffy guys singing about women, booze, and sex. Doesn't seem too far off to me. Helltopay27 19:05, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
Is that really your definition of heavy metal? AC/DC look nothing like Judas Priest for instance, or Iron Maiden, two bands clearly defined as heavy metal. Plus, their music is hardly similar either. Bretonbanquet 19:10, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
    • What the hell ever. I suppose even if I put sources after "Heavy metal" under genres, you guys would still remove it out of sheer ignorant stubbornness.
    • I mean, again, Black Sabbath sounds nothing like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, because IM and JP are NWOBHM, and yet Black Sabbath is a metal band. Each band sounds different (you call Judas Priest's and Iron Maiden's music similar?!). AC/DC got their sounds from the early days, with Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Deep Purple. In fact, Deep Purple never called themselves metal. Hell, even Motorhead, who is "clearly" a metal band and is accepted as such, called their music "rock and roll", just like AC/DC.
    • Look under the freakin' characteristics in the heavy metal article. If you say AC/DC's music doesn't fit under that, then you're just lying to yourself. Helltopay27 16:49, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
I've never removed anything from the list of genres, I'm just discussing. I think the common definition of Heavy Metal is far too wide. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple existed before the term Heavy Metal was assigned to music, so the retrospective tagging is pretty dubious. The Bon Scott era of AC/DC also happened before Heavy Metal existed as a genre. None of the Bon Scott era AC/DC is anything like Heavy Metal. I'd say they only edged towards Metal from Flick of the Switch onwards. No, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest don't sound particularly alike, but they're much closer to one another than either are to AC/DC, that much is blindingly obvious. The other problem some people have with the HM tag is that plenty of AC/DC's music has nothing in common with HM in any way, the early stuff is way too bluesy. If you're going to include anything remotely heavy in the HM genre, then do we include stuff like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen etc... Queen II was heavy - gonna include them? Bretonbanquet 17:11, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
I agree with Bretonbanquet; AC/DC doesnt sound, look, or act in anyway similar to any other band that would be called heavy metal. Just because they played an electric guitar and sang about booze dose not make a band heavy metal. Plenty of other artists fit YOUR definition of heavy metal that are not on your list. Take for instance one of Angus's biggest influences, Muddy Waters. He played hard edged electric guitar music that was about getting drunk and stoned, however, no one would ever call him heavy metal. And how about Angus's biggest influence of all, Chuck Berry. He was the first person to play rough and hard edged rock and roll, some even say he was the first person to actually play real rock and roll. Chuck Berry sang about having sex and rock and roll, just like AC/DC; but you would never call Chuck berry heavy metal. Jimi Hendrix played nearly identical music to that of AC/DC, and I've never met anyone who called Hendrix metal. AC/DC is far more closely related in both sound and style to the artists that I have listed than to any other band that wikipedia cites as heavy metal. If it doesn't look like a dog, doesn't sound like a dog, and doesn't act like a dog, it isn't a dog.

Captanpluto123 21:38, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

AC/DC is not heavy metal. Their 80's stuff is little bit harder, but my opinion is that they are hard rock and blues rock group that call their music as rock and roll. - JNCooper
Yes, they aren't heavy metal. If AC/DC is heavy metal, and Black Sabbath is heavy metal, too, then I see no difference between hard rock and heavy metal. I don't care what the media sources say: they're all headbangers that don't like hard rock but like hard rock bands and doesn't want to admit it. Let's put it like this: Black Sabbath is the limit between hard rock and heavy metal. Anything heavier, darker, whatever than black sabbath is heavy metal, the rest, hard rock.
AC/DC are not a heavy metal band they are screamers. Led Zeppelin is defininatly not a heavy metal band; can you lisson to stairway to heaven and say with a straight face that you would put that in the same genre as Metalica. Black Saboth is border line between hard rock and heavy metal.

AC/DC, Heavy Metal? You have seriously got to be kidding, right? Their music is based heavily on the blues, and as a general rule, their songs aren't fast enough to be considered "metal". People incorrectly cite them as metal. highvoltageacdc —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 00:33, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

ACDC - Origin

Hi there, I always thought ACDC originated in Adelaide as that is where the Youngs grew up. Not Sydney as stated. Grammar errors

I have edited the article to correct grammar errors, but someone keeps editing them back. Am I the only one who went to college here? "AC/DC is a hard rock band" is correct grammar. "AC/DC are a hard rock band" is not. When referring to a noun, singular, you always use "is". When plural, you use "are". You are referring to AC/DC as a single entity, so "is" is the correct grammar.

For Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, or even The Heartbreakers, the correct grammar would be "are", since you are referring to more than one entity. Only When plural is referred to in the title, does it become "are".

Although AC/DC does mean 2 things, the band is using it as a single entity.Paladinyann 22:38, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

You may well be the only one who went to college, but you may also be the only one unwilling to read edit summaries or WP:ENGVAR, in which it is clearly explained that articles about British, or in this case, British / Australian subjects, are written in British English. The grammar rules you are talking about are American grammar rules, and are not correct in British English. Please do not revert the article when I correct it in a moment. Also it is wiki etiquette to sign your comments with 4 tildes. Bretonbanquet 21:17, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Former members

  • Besides Bon Scott and Simon Wright being switched around, the former members section is in order of tenure. This is the best way to arrange them, but Simon was in the band for 6 and a half years, and Bon was in the band for about 5 years and 5 months. Following the proper order, Simon's name would appear first. So, I'm going to properly change it. - 68.88.199.26 08:31, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

But what was the output in that time? That has got to be worth something!! In Bon's short time in the band he had input on what could be said to be seven official albums minimum. Simon Wright?? Please let's not call 'Who made who an album'!! If he indeed played on that 3 track piece of crap. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dweezlezappa (talkcontribs) 11:09, August 28, 2007 (UTC)

Bad opening lines

What is with the plugs for these other bands in the opening lines of the article? Why should AC/DC be related to these bands?

Also I think that most AC/DC fans would agree. They are not pioneers of Heavy Metal, but of rock'n'roll. Can we have a vote on this?? Who decides what goes into this article anyway?? Everytime I make changes they get undone. I should be able to make whatever changes I want, it is a wiki. As long as my changes improve the article....which they do.

I think the rest of the article is excellent, so well done to everyone who has put in such great work. Dweezlezappa 02:42, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia isn't based on personal opinion. It's built on verifiable references from reliable sources. If over 100 reliable sources say that AC/DC were influential on the heavy metal genre, then it would take over 200 that say that they weren't. It could be added as an opposing position. But the original referenced content cannot be removed from Wikipedia just because you don't agree with it. In fact, deleting content that is referenced by reliable sources and verifiable is vandalism and will see the culprit blocked for doing so. 142.167.80.111 02:57, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

It doesn't even matter what wikipedia says AC/DC's genre is. They add heavy metal as a genre, then take away blues rock. Adding Punk pop, Art rock, and soft jazz as genres are all the next logical step in disgracing AC/DC. Captanpluto123 04:44, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
