Macedonian opinion poll

Why are so many unregistered users and IP's keeping insisting on adding content about Macedonia holding an opinion poll to determine how the broadcaster should select their entrant? It has no bearing on the 'other countries' section that is suppose to be covering topics on a country that has stated they may return, withdraw, or debut. Any other content is very WP:UNDUE irrelevant to that section, and would be more beneficial to the respective country in Eurovision article. Wes Mᴥuse 18:53, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Wesley ! In the poll of Macedonia, there is the choice of "Macedonia should withdraw". And I went on the website just 2 minutes ago. At the moment I'm writing this message, there are 5931 votes against Macedonia's participation while there are 3580 votes for a National Final and 1123 for an internal selection. I think we could write a little section about Macedonia, since they will probably withdraw next year. (I hope you understood everything, I'm not an English native-speaker, so it's not always simple for me) Yoyo360 (talk) 21:22, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
The thing with the poll is that the broadcaster never stated that they will follow what the public wants. The poll is only there to see what the public is thinking, it's not a decision-making being. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 22:28, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
I had spoken with a few experienced editors and admins who agreed that it was just an opinion poll and not a "voting tool" to determine what Macedonia should do. There is a big difference between opinion polls and voting system to determine an outcome. Take the OGAE polls prior to a contest, they are just opinion polls to see who the fans think would win a contest. But the actual voting system is during the contest itself which determines the outcome. Same with any political elections. Each country does an "opinion poll" to see what the public think, whereas the actual electoral voting determines the official outcome. So in that respect, this poll is nothing concrete, hence why the article itself has been put under pending changes protection. Wes Mᴥuse 12:02, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey guys, I think that Macedonia now has actually confirmed participation because the MRT official website published this article talking about how the representative will be picked at the Skopje Festival as well as a cash sum. Does this mean that Macedonia's now confirmed? Thanks! Roreo.G 16:20, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Returning Countries

Someone has put Morocco, Turkey and Serbia as returning, I imagine this is vandalism as there are no sources to indicate this is correct. Czech Republic

Hey guys, I've just edited the text with the Czech Republic. It said the focuss would shift from EYM and EYD to JESC and ESC. I have however checked the source on esc-plus.com (who have a direct quote from an e-mail), but that doesn't say anything about shifting focuss. That's why I've edited it, hope that's ok? ORF shortlisted number of venues

The host broadcaster has shortlisted the number of host cities and venues http://wiwibloggs.com/2014/06/20/austria-orf-shortlists-venues-2015/53704/# — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.212.222.191 (talk) 16:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Contrary to current table, ORF confirmed that they are also considering backup options in Vienna. Article from ESC Today. Backup locations include: Heldenplatz, Krieau, and St. Marx.Dfizzles (talk) 15:46, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Not according to the EBU. Only the three venues are in the running. Wes Mᴥuse 15:54, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, but ESCToday lists the ORF announcement as a source. How does this apply in regards to usage?Dfizzles (talk) 16:21, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
This is the complex issue that we have. Naturally information published via Eurovision.tv would be more accurate, as they are owned by the EBU. It is possible that the other websites have presumed ther other venues are a backup. The only way that would cover all aspects is the current method on the article. Listing the 3 main venues (as stated by the EBU, as well as via other websites). And place the "backup" into the failed section for now, but with the footnote so that viewers are aware that they are potentially back-up venues. That keeps our backs covered, and we'd be noting everything down as reported by all the sources. Wes Mᴥuse 16:35, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
I've modified the table slightly, and placed these so-called "backup" options into a section of their own right. Hopefully that way we'd be removing any confusion, whilst citing the sources as accurately as possible. Wes Mᴥuse 16:40, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Looking at the ORF source that you provided, even they are leaning more towards the fact there are 3 main venues in the running (see the very bottom of the source) which is what we've also shown on the article. However, they have backup venues for Vienna of which I presume are there in the event that Wiener Stadthalle is unable to host. Wes Mᴥuse 16:45, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I also felt it was a complex bit of information, which is why I held off on reformatting the table.Dfizzles (talk) 04:01, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Indeed, even I found it complexed and had to read all the sources over and over. The aspect with them though is that the sources state only 3 venues in the running. However, there are backup venues in Vienna. We can't classify those as "candidate" venues, when they haven't been classified as being "in the running", but only a backup if (for whatever reason) the candidate venue in Vienna pulls out. It does make it feel though that ORF are eager to keep Vienna in the race, regardless. Wes Mᴥuse 11:51, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
I removed the mention of a decision being made on July 3rd, considering that that date has now passed, and probably falls foul of WP:SPECULATION anyway. I moved the reference (#15) to the preceding paragraph, but that can probably be removed too.Chewy5000 (talk) 03:46, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
Well spotted, thanks. The source used doesn't even make note to a specific date, so I'm inclined to agree with you that whoever added it, was speculating. Besides, the date was in American format (month then date), rather than British format (date then month). Wes Mouse 04:15, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

ESCToday has released a new article stating direct contact with ORF to clarify that only the three main candidates are in consideration; therefore, eliminating the possibility of Vienna's back-up venues. Dfizzles (talk) 04:39, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Bosnia and Herzegovina

The source used to state that Bosnia and Herzegovina is "unlikely to take part" is from Oikotimes which is not a reliable site. I have not seen any actually reliable news sites report on this so should it be removed? { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 20:12, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Oikotimes are semi-reliable. Their sources should only be used if they stipulate their source within their articles. Wes Mᴥuse 15:16, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Cyprus

I am Cypriot and I am pretty sure that CyBC has not made any official confirmation about Cyprus's participation in this year's contest. "London Greek Radio" said that Cyprus would maybe return and "Wiwiblogg's" announcement is based on the "LGR" announcement so please remove Cyprus from the Participating Countries as the broadcaster has not confirmed the participation yet. Thanks.

Wikipedia follows guidelines concerning confirmation through sources. Not personal opinions or personal beliefs. --BabbaQ (talk) 22:20, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
It's not my opinion. CYBC has not made an official announcement. AndEuro (talk) 09:01, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
A further source has been published which dismisses what Wiwibloggs have reported. CyBC are still making their decisions, and a return decision has still not been reached. I've updated the article accordingly, moved Cyprus to the 'other countries' section for now, with the prose explaining what all 3 sources are reporting. I think this is the safest way forward for now. Wes Mouse 15:17, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Spain's "big question"

I've removed Spain from the 'Other countries' section as the source from Oikotimes is quoting Eurovisiontimes as their source of information. I've checked Eurovisiontimes website, and they have absolutely nothing about Spain's possible withdrawal. Thus I conclude that the Oiktimes source is dubious. Wes Mouse 12:01, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

I think that is the right decision.--BabbaQ (talk) 19:35, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Slovakia, Belarus

http://eurovision-news.webnode.gr/news/slovakia-will-not-return-in-2015-/ is true that a representative of the broadcaster in Slovakia said that his country has no plans to return the competition but himself broadcaster has not announced anything according to this source http://esctoday.com/85056/monaco-tmc-will-return-eurovision-2015/. Anyway eurovision news not very reliable as esctoday.com.

http://mapmusic.ru/newsm/12787-belarus-vopreki-slucham-primet-uchastie-v-evrovidenii-2015.html Now with regard to Belarus this source is not quite true to mean that Belarus has confirmed his participation in the competition since neither esctoday.com mention something about it. Currently only has plans for participation. --Jeanis12345 (talk) 4:57, 15 July 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.210.15.88 (talk)

I will not have an answer as to whether this is correct or not? --Jeanis12345 (talk) 11:38, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

I've just checked both links for Belarus, and neither is an official confirmation. The first quotes a government official who admits the choice is up to the network, while the second states that participation is likely, but this cannot be considered definite until an official announcement is made.Chewy5000 (talk) 11:40, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

F.Y.R.Macedonia

I would like to ask the other users if it's possible to stop calling the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia as "Macedonia" but as "F.Y.R.Macedonia".All the sites call the country F.Y.R.Macedonia.Thank you --Mikeagell98 (talk) 18:47, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

This has been discussed numerous times before, and the consensus is to call the country "Macedonia" rather than "F.Y.R. Macedonia". { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 18:23, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Macedonia is a region in Greece and a name of a country and as a result there is disagreement on how to use the term "Macedonia". Policy on this issue for the English Wikipedia has long been agreed and won't be changing any time soon. CT Cooper · talk 12:36, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Policy overrules everything. Wes Mouse 12:38, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
We might as well start a discussion on whether Georgia should be referred to as the Former Soviet Republic of Georgia to differentiate it from the United States state. Most people recognize the term Macedonia as the Balkan country as opposed to the Greek region, which, represented as Greece, has no place in the Eurovision anyway. T.W. Backup venues?

According to Esctoday, http://esctoday.com/85814/eurovision-2015-wiener-stadthalle-viennas-bid-running/, ORF has confirmed them Wiener Stadthalle is the only venue being considered in Vienna to host the contest. The venues listed as possible backup options in the article (Heldenplatz, Neu Marx, Krieu) are out of race in the bidding phase and were only considered as initial optional locations by the city of Vienna. Xelaxa (talk) 08:11, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Slovakia has not confirmed the non-participation in Austria.

The two sources given for confirmation of Slovakia, it will not return to the contest are not reliable sources. It is true that a representative of the Slovakian broadcaster said that not making plans for a return to competition but is not an official confirmation of the broadcaster. In esctoday.com mentioned new for Slovakia has not announced anything about 2015. And an another source mentioned that Monaco will not return, in the last paragraph that waiting for a decision of some other countries even for the decision whether to participate the not within them included and Slovakia.

Other countries edits

I've simplified and updated some of the explanations for the countries in the Other countries section. I have concerns with some of the sources and text that was added there. The website Wiwibloggs has been cited quite a few times in this area and after reviewing their articles, I chose to remove those citations and the information that was taken from them. I've removed a citation from this website for Bulgaria which jumped to the conclusion that since Bulgaria had confirmed their participation in the Junior contest, that meant they would be returning to the regular ESC. [1] For Poland and Serbia, this website has "sources" which has told them that these countries are likely to participate in the 2015 contest. This sounds more like gossip rather than news reporting so I've removed those pieces from the article as well. [2] [3] I think more caution should probably be taken when citing this website on the article in the future. Pickette (talk) 02:35, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
