Jewish?
editThe only other place I've seen him listed as Jewish is jewatch.com. Is there a citation for that? Just because you're born in Lodz, it doesn't mean you're Jewish... then again, he might not even have been born in Lodz! D SCH 00:27, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, he is listed as an ethnic Jew all over the place. I'll add a footnote in a sec. Ahasuerus 01:21, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

- He's jewish and is responsible for 10million deaths. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.199.124.102 (talk) 18:56, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
The last post sounds of the ilk of all ducks quack therefore if it quacks but with an anti-semitic undertone - which surely kind of ignores the Nazi equivalent people like Himmler etc etc (though some nutcases do believe of course that most of the Nazi leadership was really Jewish and acted in the way they did to give anti-semitism a bad reputation!) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.144.111.124 (talk) 20:48, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Just facts (Beria, Kaganowitch, Malenkow, Jagoda, Trotzki, ..................................). 2001:16B8:AD21:1E00:D1DB:3B33:7028:6A27 (talk) 18:24, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Wikipedia has people of various perspectives who have a common interest in finding out exactly what people said and did, and who they were. Yagoda was Jewish -or as much as you can be as an atheist materialist. The article needs a more credible reference for this than nutcase sites like 'jewatch.com', tho. 2.28.168.147 (talk) 13:52, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
It's disgusting that when you point out that the guy was Jewish and responsible for the deaths of millions of people suddenly the apologists come out of the woodwork. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.185.173.29 (talk) 13:54, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
i can't see any apologists? Its no more relevant than pointing out that the architects of the Holocaust were all mainly German Lutherans (when the clear subtext of people making the point re Iagoda is of 'typical jew' pov). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.168.208.149 (talk) 20:19, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
The info box lists his "nationality" as Jewish. Seriously? There was no such nation.
Perhaps his ethnicity and/or faith was Jewish, but his nationality was Russian. Changed. Garth of the Forest (talk) 18:15, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- "Perhaps his ethnicity and/or faith was Jewish, but his nationality was Russian." OMG, what a non-sense!! Dear Friend: you haven`t understood NOTHING.
- So be consequent please --> Stalin also was..... Russian. Yes, yes, Stalin´s nationalisty was Russian, wasn`t it ?
- Says GotF. :-)) 2001:16B8:AD21:1E00:D1DB:3B33:7028:6A27 (talk) 18:30, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
I have to agree, being 'Jewish' is neither a nationality or a race as someone seems to have posted. I also agree that posting something that seems to connect being Jewish with killing 10 million people, which in itself is disputed, seems needlessly pejorative. Staling killed tens of millions more and he wasn't Jewish. Hitler killed more as well. That's not being an apologist, that's just pointing out the irrelevancy of connecting the two unrelated facts.PVarjak (talk) 21:39, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
"very beautiful legend"
editI changed the wording of this to simply "legend" because the legend has ideological content, such that I and many others won't really find it "beautiful". I'm open to some other wording, but "very beautiful" adds an explicitly religious/theist POV. 66.195.208.54 06:21, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Birthplace
editThis article seems to contain a contradiction: Was Yagoda born in Lodz, Poland, or in Nizhny Novgorod. Helix_pomatia, 2005-12-10.
- That's a good question. Most sources state that he was born in Nizhny Novgorod, but one insists on Rybinsk and suggests that Yagoda moved to Nizhny Novgorod as a youth. I'll change the article, thanks for noticing! Ahasuerus 20:34, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
- The "demo-version" of Encyclopaedia Britannica states he was born in Lodz. But I wouldn't say I trust that source very much. Anyway, I think a citation would be useful here.
- I think it's a bit funny, that poor Yagoda was born in a different town in almost every Wikipedia-version where he has an article. According to this version (enwiki) he was born in Nizhny Novgorod, according to the Polish wiki, in Lodz, according to the Swedish wiki, in Lemberg (Lviv), and if I understood it correctly, the Russians voted for Rybinsk (I don't speak Russian)…
- --Adolar von Csobánka (Talk) 21:33, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Montefiore has this wrong. Yagoda was born in Lodz, Poland, Russian Empire, according to the KGB archives now open to the public and recorded by the KGB's chroniclers. 2A00:23C4:B617:7D01:6DAE:161D:944F:11D0 (talk) 16:01, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
"phallo-imitator"
editWhat of the "phallo-imitator"? The article makes it sound as though it was standard for Soviet officials to possess such things. This sounds as though it might be a hoax, or at least the wording is very strange.
Yagoda (berry)
editin Russian. Tsinfandel (talk) 00:22, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
- But his real name was Yehuda (Jewish).
Too many (citation needed) in article.
editThe last section is pretty unreadable due to too many of these things clogging it up. One or two after a few questionable statements is okay but not after every other word! It may be well meaning but frankly it makes the article unreadable, rather useless as an encyclopedic article and it looks a stereotyped joke of wikipedia at its worst. Its not enough that you care to stick one or two in the article on statements that you find questionable, you ought to try fix it before doing so. Peppering the whole article with that template borders upon well meaning "vandalism". I'm going to take out all of them and replace it with one Template:Refimprove box. Revision
editI made a considerable revision of this article on the 4th Apr. 2014, and now find it to be reverted to it's original state. My writing made several important corrections and additions to various parts of Yagoda's life and contained all the necessary citations. Since no reason for this reversion has been given I'm going to re-implement my edition. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.246.118.227 (talk) 10:23, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
He also murdered Jews
editmore than 1% of his victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine were Jews, which means he was responsible for at least 100,000 murdered Jews in Ukraine. He may have been a Jew, but he certainly wasn't killing people in the name of Jews. He was a Soviet, a Stalinist, and acted on these allegiances alone.
- So what ? Adolf H. also murdered Austrians, too. As an Austrian, German, rom.kath. Christian, national socialist, socialist and as a murder.
- You "practise theory", dear Friend.
- Yagoda was a Jew and was a so called communist and a real mass-murder. And a very, very bad (Jewish) man/beast. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:16B8:AD21:1E00:D1DB:3B33:7028:6A27 (talk) 18:40, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Removed long standing text
editUser:Lute88, I'm not sure why you removed the long standing text? You don't do that per WP guidelines, without starting a discussion first and build a consensus. All I did was move the Holodomor paragraph from the Early Life section to NKVD Chief where it was more appropriate. Also, you falsely claim that there was no source provided to back up the claim, that's wrong also, here is what the source states:
- Among these monstrous crimes, Ukraine stands out as the worst in terms of numbers. Stalin declared war on his own people in 1932, sending Commissars V. Molotov and Lazar Kaganovitch and NKVD secret police chief Genrikh Yagoda to crush the resistance of Ukrainian farmers to forced collectivization. Ukraine was sealed off. All food supplies and livestock were confiscated. NKVD death squads executed "anti-party elements."
I will go ahead and re-add the text you removed as your method and reasoning was inappropriate in this situation, --E-960 (talk) 10:19, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- The given source says nothing about GY Holodomor involvement. The source is also poorly written, unencyclopedic, unacademic, WP:RS.--Lute88 (talk) 11:37, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- STOP edit warring, and making false statements. The article is not poorly written as you claim it was written by ERIC MARGOLIS a Contributing Foreign Editor of the Toronto Sun newspaper. Also, here are more source that directly implicate Yagoda for the events in question, a book: Rafał Lemkin - Holodmor: The Ukrainian Genocide [1], and the website for a Ukrainian human rights organization the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group, were it lists the perpetrator of the crime and include Yagoda here: [2]. --E-960 (talk) 13:00, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
Most importantly
editWhat are "pornographic pipes"? — Ineuw talk 03:26, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
It seems according to other sources I've come across but can't recall the term refers specifically to smoking pipes carved with erotic imagery . Any confirmation of this should be added to the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.229.224.133 (talk) 23:15, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Holdomor subsection
edit- I don't think that a oneliner deserves a separate subsection.
- The references should be corrected.Xx236 (talk) 09:55, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Full Quote about Yagoda's trial from Solzhenitsyn
editI'm putting this back AGAIN. This full section is cited in a few other Wikipedia areas and for consistency should be the same here. PVarjak (talk) 04:24, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- Here is the citation from Solzenhitsyn as quoted in the New York Times:
- http://www.nytimes.com/1973/12/30/archives/solzhenitsyn-on-purge-trials-of-the-30s-the-gulag-archipelago.html?_r=0PVarjak (talk) 01:25, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
I reinserted this again. It is from the SAME article as the quote about the canals, which precedes it from the same New York Times article. I do not see what the problem is in including it, especially as the same quote is cited in other related articles about the show trials of other NKVD figures. PVarjak (talk) 02:20, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
I had given up reinserting this section (even though I'd provided multiple sources); but I see that someone else in the last 3 years put it back in. I don't know if I can track that down, but I thank whoever did so and made it stick.PVarjak (talk) 21:43, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
'Pornographic pipe'
editIt was discovered that Yagoda's two Moscow apartments and his dacha contained ... 165 pornographic pipes....
- Like Ineuw I wondered what a "pornographic pipe" could be. Perhaps a parenthetical explanation should be added. Or text changed to "pornographically carved pipes." Sca (talk) 14:41, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
removed two images
editDear Participants,
I have removed two images:
1)1930 jagoda.jpg
I do not think that it is authentic. The source of the image is not indicated. To establish the date and the authenticity for the images from the earlier USSR is important.
2) 1922 exit visa hand signed by Genrikh Yagoda.jpg
I do not think there is any value in having this image on the page.
If disagree please voice your objections.--Armenius vambery (talk) 14:12, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
image Genrikh Yagoda and Ida Averbakh 1922
editDear Participants, propose to remove this image since questions in regards to its authenticity. The source is indicated as antique shop which do not allow to establish the date the image was created as well as verify who is pictured.--Armenius vambery (talk) 16:09, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
- The image is inserted back, the same questions about the reliability of the source and the idea to sell the image.--Armenius vambery (talk) 03:28, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
Removed misleading Solzhenitsyn anecdote.
editRemoved part of the quotation with the dramatic flash behind a "musoline curtain" and the "outline of a pibe".
I guess few people have actually READ Archipelag GULAG, but in the book, in a section immediately following the anecdote, Solzhenitsyn makes it clear that this anecdote couldn't possibly have happened, since there are no musoline curtains or visitors galleries on the second floor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.38.143.54 (talk) 14:31, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Poisoning Menzhinsky
editIn this article it says that Yagoda's assistants poisoned Menzhinsky to death over two weeks, but in Menzhinsky's article, it says Vyacheslav Menzhinsky died from natural causes, but that at the Trial of the Twenty-One, Yagoda confessed under duress that he had poisoned Menzhinsky. To me both possibilities seem plausible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.124.145.85 (talk) 17:49, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

Source for death toll?
editIn the lead, it is said that "12,000–25,000 laborers died", but in the text it is never specified what is the source for this information. It would be beneficial for the reader if he could know what the source of this information is in the text, perhaps also with a description of the living conditions that led to these many deaths. Body Count?
editHow many deaths is Yagoda considered to be responsible for, and why is this information not explicitly listed in the Lede, like it would for any other mass murderer?107.195.106.201 (talk) 14:23, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
