- Suggest the alternative WP:DYKAPRIL hook ALT1: ... that Salvador Dalí once painted Hitler masturbating?--Launchballer 09:34, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
- Launchballer I think either might work for 1 April, if you still think it's worth holding can you move it to SOHA? Otherwise it is too tempting a quirky pick. CMD (talk) 16:34, 11 February 2026 (UTC)
- I can't approve my own hook.--Launchballer 16:36, 11 February 2026 (UTC)
ALT1 approved additionally to ALT0, not in the article as an isolated fact I suppose but it is clear in the article and in the sources such as . This can be raked to SOHA, if wanted. On a minor note on the closest sentence, Staryu, could you clarify which source called the seat a throne? Thanks, CMD (talk) 16:54, 11 February 2026 (UTC)
- None do apparently, thanks for pointing this out. I've changed it to "chair". Staryu★ 16:59, 11 February 2026 (UTC)

Hello, I'll review this. Will add my review comments in the next day or so. MCE89 (talk) 05:34, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- All comments now added below, overall a very nice piece of work. Just ping me when you're done responding to these suggestions and I'll take another look. MCE89 (talk) 06:16, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- I will get this done today or tomorrow. My only disagreement with the review is that the "Description" section shouldn't have to specify the dimensions and medium of the artwork. The vast majority of articles for paintings on here (including featured articles) do not, because it's something that is stated in the lead, most often the opening sentence, or the infobox. Given how brief the article is, it seems a bit silly to have "Hitler Masturbating is a gouache-on-paper painting by Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí, 16.5 cm × 21.6 cm in size" in the lead and repeat it again one section down. The reader would have just read this. I could remove it from the lead and add it in the "Description" section, but then the lead would be lacking in information. Staryu★ 10:49, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- Forgot to ping, @MCE89. Staryu★ 14:34, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- Got it, that makes sense. I do think the remaining information in the lead (i.e. the fact that it's an alteration of a previous painting, its exhibition history) should be included in the body though to ensure that the lead is summarising the body. You could also consider very briefly summarising some of the ideas in the "Analysis" section within the lead. MCE89 (talk) 10:35, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- The article should be ready now. I expanded only slightly on Dalí and authoritarianism because the article is about the painting and should not trail too far off the immediate subject, given its short length. Dalí made many comments on Nazism, and there have been decades of debate surrounding his views. The matter could probably warrant its own article. As of now people can read more about it on Salvador Dalí, but I believe it's discussed an appropriate amount here. @MCE89 Staryu★ 13:44, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Looks good! Passing this now. MCE89 (talk) 14:06, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

Prose review
[edit]- The information in the lead is largely not currently contained in the body of the article. Ideally the lead should act as a summary of the body and shouldn't need its own citations
- The body should also be independent of the lead, so the phrase
The original artwork was created by an unidentified painter...
lacks context (i.e. if I haven't already read the lead, I won't understand what "the original artwork" is referring to). I'd suggest adding a sentence with basic details of the painting (medium, size, the fact that it's an alteration of a previous work) to the beginning of the "Description" section Dalí had a lifelong, and often controversial, admiration of authoritarian figures and ideologies
- I think this could be expanded on slightly, as the sources seem to suggest that there's a bit more nuance than this sentence currently captures. For instance, the Le Monde article that you cite saysExperts are still divided as concerning this fascination, and whether it reflected a real attraction to Nazi ideology or was more linked to his unusual sexual fantasies and his obsession with authoritarian father figures.
The book chapter by Frost that you cite also goes into more detail about this. I think adding a bit more about how different scholars have interpreted Dalí's attitude towards Hitler would be a useful addition- The quote from Elkins is quite difficult for a reader to interpret out of context. That whole passage of Elkins' book is a pretty dense and challenging read, so I'd suggest that for reader accessibility, you might consider summarising Elkins' argument in your own words rather than quoting him
Source review
[edit]- No concerns about source reliability, all sources appear sufficiently reliable for the information they are used for
- The article is quite short, but it summarises the main aspects of the topic. I didn't find any additional sourcing that would suggest major gaps in breadth of coverage (beyond my suggestion above to expand slightly on Dali's broader attitude towards Hitler)
- I spot checked citations 1, 7, 10, and 14 and didn't find any close paraphrasing or source-text integrity issues
