Unrelated protest on New Year's Eve

The protest/riot in downtown Minneapolis on December 31, according to a secondary source[3], was unrelated to Idd's killing and protests that happened earlier in the day. That New Year's Eve night event was moved over to 2020–2021 Minneapolis–Saint Paul racial unrest. Minnemeeples (talk) 16:53, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Complaints against the officers

I removed original research on complaints against the officers. Here are some possible secondary sources that could be used instead: [4] [5] [6]. I believe these sources are already cited in the article and can be re-used. Those sources use the officer name Schmitt, as opposed to Schmidt. I can't seem to get the number of complaints aligned between sources:

Schmitt: 24 MPR or 27 WCCO

Huynh: 7 MPR or 8 WCCO

Klund: 4 MPR or 5 WCCO

Total: 37 KSTP

Total if performing addition: 35 MPR or 40 WCCO

Categorisation

This article is currently in Category:African Americans shot dead by law enforcement officers in the United States. At CfD recently there was a consensus to move some articles in that category to a new category, Category:African people shot dead by law enforcement officers in the United States. For categorisation purposes is Idd, who was born in Africa but moved to the U.S. at a young age, an African American, an African person, or both? – Arms & Hearts (talk) 16:49, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Not sure how you the project defines "African people" for classification purposes. Dolal Idd, I believe, was a naturalized American citizen.[8]. The article is classified with Category:American people of Somali descent. You might notice that the list includes a redirect for Dahir A. Adan, a person killed by St. Cloud, Minnesota, police in 2016. Dahir A. Adan is listed with Category:African Americans shot dead by law enforcement officers in the United States. Dahir A. Adan and Dolal Idd, whatever is chose, should be discussed in tandem. Minnemeeples (talk) 20:53, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

@Minnemeeples: How we define "African-American" for these purposes is indeed the question. My sense is there's no community-wide consensus. I've started a discussion at Talk:2016 St. Cloud, Minnesota knife attack regarding Dahir A. Adan (which redirects to that article), but they strike me as subtly different cases. I'm not sure that Idd was a naturalised U.S. citizen as you say (unlike Adan) – the source linked above doesn't actually describe him as such, this article doesn't either, and I haven't been able to find any reliable sources that incontrovertibly do. Aside from these two articles, there are several more ambiguous cases where the current category may not be right, which I listed in the CfD discussion (linked above). I wouldn't be opposed to discussing these all in one place, but it doesn't seem likely that there'd be a single approach that would work for every article. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 19:10, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Regarding citizenship, numerous reliable sources cited in the article describe Idd’s ethnicity as “Somali-American”. Seems best to include on both categories. Minnemeeples (talk) 23:12, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
