editI don't wanna touch this, but does this seem a little wrong to any of you? "... service provider on August 24, 1695, to coincide with ..." --Chopstickles 14:46, 21 January2009 (UTC)
I took the part out that says it coincided with the Sept 11 attacks. That info is completely irrelevant and has nothing to do with the launch of Msn. Ploease Comment if you disagree —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.44.40.183 (talk) 17:24, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
It doesn't even seem to be true, though. I think someone just put in the thing about september 11th to be a nut or something. Can anyone confirm this? If its not the case it should really be taken out soon, that would be a glaring problem. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.5.200.43 (talk) 20:36, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
Accesibility
editThis article should note that some of the services provided by MSN (such as MSN Video) are not available for browsers other than Internet Explorer 6, and also explaining that it is this way to promote IE6. --Krator 14:46, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

editthank u for doing it all for me.. Does anyone know what the new version of msn is? Is it still msn 9, or was a newer edition released?--Moosh88 06:13, 1 August 2005 (UTC)v 9!! never heard of that one...i have 7.0 but is 9 better?? ([1]
There is no MSN 9.... there is MSN 8.0, which recently replaced MSN 7,5 -- it's also called Windows Live Messenger. there are split opinions on what's better; 7,5 or 8,0 but I'd say 8,0. It has features like talking to people while appearing as offline, sending offline messages etc.
there is a msn software that you can get and download for msn subscribers. this has nothing to do with the msn messenger but the actual msn internet software
msn does not handle all their own internet service even in the US qwest handles a the msn service in the qwest telco states In both the customer service/support staffing and even in the background on qwest own network. the only thing msn is the email and msn browser

Not exactly. Qwest is a reseller of MSN services. Qwest provides the connectivity, MSN provides the content and services.
not so with the qwest dsl with msn. msn has very little to do with that other then the email servers and the messenger. qwest handles all traffic, and support for the msn service except for very specific parts with tech support at which point msn might be involved. outside of the msn browser, email, and messenger the rest is qwest. and since the msn browser isn't a requirement and can be had outside of the dsl/dial service I'm not really counting that part
the only time you really get qwest as just the reseller might be when using the msn dial up.

MSN is The Microsoft Network - Not Microsoft Service Network!!!!
editCome on guys!!! 194.83.233.3 15:52, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. MSN = MicroSoft Network. Leave Service out of it (We all know they do ;-).
- Couldn't agree more, as long as Microsoft continues to associate "MS" as their abbreviation (and will forever continue to do so), therefore it is (The) Micro Soft Network..hence MSN :). Besides, have any of you ever used or seen the 'embryonic' version of MSN for Windows 95? The desktop icon clearly reads "The Microsoft Network". Call it a hunch. - Paul Marriott, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
MSN has never been known as the Microsoft Services Network. Toncu 05:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- I've always thought that "MSN" was short for "Microsoft Network". Never thought otherwise! Adamdaley (talk) 05:32, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
MSN is the 2nd most traffiked English website?
editWho claims this??? Any sources??? Netcraft.com may not be the end-all of site-traffic ranking however, I have Netcraft's toolbar installed, and as of right now. (Sunday, Septmeber 5th, 2005). MSN.com [ http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.msn.com/ ] ranks as the 14th most visited on the web. But it is still behind Google.com as #1, Yahoo.com as #2, Google.co.uk #3, Microsoft.com #4, Ebay #7, CNN #12 etc. (Amazon.com #15 + others are behind MSN.) CaribDigita 04:06, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
- The article says it is #2 according to Alexa. Whether Alexa is any more accurate than Netcraft is anyone's guess. Ranking the top sites by number of visitors is extremely difficult and requires stuff like toolbars installed in browsers and a lot of estimation and guesswork. SilverFox 04:26, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- Hi there, thanks- it looks like this has now been cleared up. Alexa, has since been added to that sentence to cite a source since I posted. See MSN article version that was back on 10:02, 17 September 2005 CaribDigita 22:28, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

More required on the early days of MSN
editMore information on the original MSN product which included a proprietary hypertext browser and proprietary email protocol would be interesting. These were quietly discontinued in around 1997.
-- I agree, I came here to read about that. I remember the early installation very vaugely. 210.10.142.181 04:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
The very last, original MSN which shipped with Windows 95, used Microsoft Multimedia Viewer technology - perhaps that's the "proprietary hypertect browser" referenced above. The email protocol wasn't proprietary, per se. The client was the then current Microsoft Exchange client.
In August of 1996, MSN began the work to migrate many of the community aspects of MSN to the internet. In roughly 1997, a media-heavy wrapper around the MSIE browser was released. It used what I believe was a proprietary authentication method for POP3 - the name escapes me. Toncu 03:48, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
The current history doesn't provide enough context in terms of how the first MSN was launched to be a direct competitor to the Web, and for a while there, many companies hedged their bets and ran dual sites on MSN and the Web until the supremacy of the latter was confirmed. I can still recall the magazine cover (was it Business Week?) with the banner headline about the launch of MSN: "Internet Killer!" Thankfully, it wasn't! Engleham 05:00, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Affiliates
editThe affiliate section is poorly written in an inconsistent style and poor description of services. XFS Imperial 00:40, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
XtraMSN is not a partnership with Yahoo!. It is instead a partnership between MSN and Telecom New Zealand's ISP, Xtra.

- You deleted some good info I see it being reverted - Mike Beckham 04:31, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
That is possible. However, I suspect that the information you refer to was what I found to be outdated and/or debatable/unreferencable. Helzagood 16:27, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
Improper division
editSince this article is about MSN and MSN alone, I don't think it is appropraite to divide it in to "The MSN era" and "The Windows Live era". MSN hasn't gone anywhere and isn't going anywhere, some of its services have simply been rebranded. It's okay to note that, but then for the most part, the rest of the article should focus on MSN the portal/ISP, and the Windows Live article about the custom portal/search engine/free software provider. - Mike | Patch 02:02, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

MSNBC
editI notice there's no mention of MSNBC in this article. Is there any news of its name being changed because of the Windows Live branding? --Fez2005 19:09, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Is this real?
editToday, when I was at | Mystical Forest Zone Forums, I've saw this article that MSN is closing down. Here's what the person got from his email:
>>Hey it is Andy and John the directors of MSN, sorry for the
interruption but msn is closing down. This is because too many
inconsiderate people are taking up all the name (eg making up lots of
different accounts for just one person), we only have 578 names left.
If you would like to close your account, DO NOT SEND THIS MESSAGE ON.
If you would like to keep your account, then SEND THIS MESSAGE TO
EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. This is not joke, we will be shutting
down the servers. Send it on, thanks. WHO EVER DOES NOT SEND THIS
MESSAGE, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE CLOSED AND YOU WILL COST£10.00 A MONTH TO
USE. SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. NOW YOU KNOW WHAT TO
DO. PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD THIS or REPLY. COPY THE WHOLE EMAIL. GO BACK TO
YOUR INBOX AND CLICK ON NEW. AND PASTE THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION
Is this true that MSN is shutting down? Thank you. -Girla PurpleHeart 04:09, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Its fake there was a message being sent arround on hotmail that required you send a message or your account gets banned. before falling for this type of stuff make sure to ask microsoft support about the validity.Atomic1fire 21:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

for the record I (not logged in) removed what appeared to be spam and or sentances inconsisitant with msn such as the live name change being said again *even though it was allready stated* and an short untechnical explonation of msn messenger being something to the tune of msn messenger is a chatroom type that is what you can use to talk to people.Atomic1fire 21:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Biased history ?
editWhat about the mention that "The rapid rise of the internet" was "partly fueled by the built-in IP functionalities of Windows 95". Does that unfairly gives credit to Microsoft for "inventing" the popular internet ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.16.88.25 (talk) 03:28, 7 April 2007 (UTC).
External Links
editGuys the external link section is nothing but a link farm for MSN. There is already an article on the list of services MSN provides and plenty of links to msn.com in the content of this article. Wikipedia should not be a spam external link place for any one including Bill Gates.

Closing Down?
editCould someone who has an insite on this rumour please answer, and verify the truth? Is it really closing? Angel2001 12:51, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- MSN will just be a portal site. Microsoft's services and products have been renamed. (e.g. MSN Hotmail is now Live Mail) Davtra 03:09, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Msn icon.jpg
editImage:Msn icon.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:19, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
MSN Internet Subscribers
editThe article says 9 million compared to AOL's 26 million. That stat is very old considering that AOL has lost half of its customers in the last 4 years...
- Yeah, the AOL article says that "[AOL's] customer base has decreased to 10.1 million subscribers as of November 2007" with a citation to a Computer World article to back it up, so clearly this statistic for MSN v. AOL is very outdated. I put "citation needed" in this article, but nobody has followed up on it. Can someone update that statistic with a modern statistic, please? Or at least indicate how old that statistic was? --Skyfaller (talk) 06:53, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Tabs?
editIn the version of MSN before Windows Live, if you had multiple conversations going on, you could merge them all together into one window by pressing F9, and you can seperate them into seperate windows again by pressing F8. I installed Live two weeks ago, and I still haven't figured out how do merge them. And yet, somehow, it works for my sister, and it's automatic. How do I merge my windows into tabs, and how can I make it automatic? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stormfin (talk • contribs) 03:41, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

MSN Premium being phased out
editAs the text I added notes, existing Verizon DSL customers can stick with MSN Premium, but new ones must use Windows Live, and once existing customers switch to Live, they cannot go back. This information has been provided to me more than once by Verizon tech support, and I am sure it is correct. Furthermore, MSN Premium will not be upgraded from IE6 to IE7 because of the phase out of MSN Premium. Same source - Verizon tech support.
One additional fact: MSN tech support will not provide direct tech support to Verizon DSL customers because Verizon has its own tech support. I know because I have been bounced back and forth more than once. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.72.105.242 (talk) 23:26, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- MSN Premium is still for sale [[get.msn.com]]. Just because Verizon won't offer it anymore does not mean it is being phased out. Legend of 14 (talk) 21:29, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
First line
edit"MSN (The MicroSoft Network) or Windows Live Messenger is a collection of Internet services provided by Microsoft."
This is wrong, yeah? Windows Live is a different set of products to MSN. I'm think maybe this is just confusion over the fact that Windows Live Messenger is still popularly known as MSN.
I'll change it for now, but do tell me if I'm wrong here Jh39 (talk) 19:01, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with File:Windows Live logo.svg
editThe image File:Windows Live logo.svg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.

MSN is shut down!
editI have a problem: The MSN website has been shut down because of the thing that says, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"! When will it be fixed? :( --Angeldeb82 (talk) 21:14, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
- This is not a page concerning general discussion about the content of the article, next time please use Microsoft Bing or another search engine, or contact Microsoft directly, the headline of your section makes it seem as if the service itself is about to be discontinued.

Use SVG or PNG?
editUsing SVG is recommended in Wikipedia, but the SVG version of MSN logo did not supersede the quality of PNG version.
Please have an opinion. Silvergoat (talk∙contrib) 06:40, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
- I think you find the latest version satisfactorily, the reason they appeared of lesser quality because the first one had a PNG embedded in it, an issue I was working on, but then someone "Traced" the png, tracing as the name implies traces each color of the logo, And uploaded it on top of my existing work.
- It is a bad idea to do a trace unless it is a flat single color logo. I would recommend people study a little more into SVGs and try converting them from other formats (AI, EPS, PS, CDR, WMF) before tracing them, or better ye never tracing them , let the people that have years of graphic design experience do that.
- Anyway after hours of searching i found some source artwork to use and quickly matched it to the PNG, enjoy! --Charles E. Keisler (talk), Network+ 14:40, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
(Scandalous) content of international editions
editThere is no mention that MSN.de (German edition) sometimes posts nude photographs from Playboy directly on its own site (under the tab Lifestyle or Leben). First of all, isn't that a copyright violation. More importantly, why isn't there a huge public outcry against Microsoft for this totally inappropriate content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.48.136.25 (talk) 21:41, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- If you can find sources and references verifying that feel free to add it under criticism or a controversy, as long as it's verifiable and relevant to the page it's welcome information.

MSN & AOL the most popular providers, or "DIAL-UP" providers?
editUnder the section MSN dial-up and premium there is this text: MSN still offers dial-up Internet service under the name MSN Dial-up. MSN remains the second largest Internet service provider in the United States, behind dial-up leader AOL This gives the impression that MSN and AOL are the 2 most popular service providers, ahead of even broadband/fiber providers. Is this true, or does the wording need to be changed to reflect a comparison to ONLY dial-up providers? MrZoolook (talk) 14:28, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- That is definitely false! Legend of 14 (talk) 21:31, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
Major update
editI just did a heck of a lot of work to make sense out of these articles:
- MSN, the article about the website <-- merge MSN Mobile, about the apps, because now the MSN website & apps are the same concept and there was a lot of redundant information
- MSN Dial-up, the article about the ISP <-- merge MSN Explorer, about the dial-up software, because it follows the chronology and there was a lot of redundant info there too
I put a lot of thought into this, being WP:BOLD and in WP:GOODFAITH. I tried to make everything more concise, less repetitive, with better English / grammar, and cited well. Please nobody swoop in and revert it; let's at least talk it out first. --Samvscat (talk) 09:57, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
MSN Sports app data sources
editI could not find any citations for the data sources for the MSN Sports app. I traced back the original edit here and there was no citation. A web search only points back to the Wikipedia article. Also, "MBL.com" is either a misspelling for "MLB" or is not a sports website. --Samvscat (talk) 13:57, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

editThe goal of this MSN article is to cover the website and the apps, which are part of one coherent product offering from Microsoft. Microsoft Operating System
editMicrosoft and their operating System? I have been with them from time of DOS; yes with the time has been many improvements’! Most of improvement is/was improvement? However window-10. So sorry to say I do not see any improvement, yes they did make “LOT” of changes but I do not see here improvement. The OS is made specifically for Games and yes Microsoft Co. may have got some financial gain, but that is not improving it is financial gain if that is what you looking for, However that is American way!! I am owner of four PCs two runs on win-7, one on XP, and one on wi-10 I find wi-7 reasonable good operating system, however I do mist uncensored news that I unable to have.
