Now its corrected as the Dam is owned by Kerala..so request you to kindly correct the name of the owner of this dam as Kerala instead of Tamilnadu — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.220.74.5 (talk) 07:07, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

"The dam and the river are owned by and located in Kerala" is wrong. "The dam and the river are located in Kerala but the dam is owned by the government of Tamilnadu" is correct.

Please refer to page number 194 of the Reference 1 pdf. The first mentioned in the Tamilnadu's list is Periyar(MullaPeriyar) - Year of Completion: 1895. This is enough to prove that the dam is owned by Tamilnadu though it is located in Kerala.

List of Dams owned by Kerala is in page 83 and 84 of the same reference. The oldest dam owned by kerala was completed in 1947. Dam constructed in 1895 is not mentioned at all.

Not done: The citations for lease agreement states that dam is leased to Tamil nadu; which implies owner is not Tamil Nadu. Also, the Reference 1 pdf (National Register of Large Dams) indicates the operating body of the dam (eg: Parambikulam, Aliyar, etc). Further, the lead clearly states "the dam is controlled and operated under a period lease by neighboring Tamil Nadu state". Hence, there is no confusion here. Splitting the Article.

edit

I would like to know if it would be better to split the article and move the dispute related to the already available article, We already have good examples here,

It is indeed a good suggestion. Some sections of both articles are the same. We can move the dispute entirely to the Tamil Nadu-Kerala dam row and keep a brief and internal link in this article. Cheers, -- Aarem (Talk) 14:47, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

To add further to the suggestions above - extensive details of the new dam proposed by Kerala government should not be here since it would be a different dam altogether at a different location. This proposal should be moved to the dispute article along with section on dam safety. Although this latter section might at first glance seem relevant here, the issues raised about the safety are rather more of accusations of one party which once again is part of the dispute rather than agreed facts. It is under the best interest of this main article that these sections are summarised here like Aarem suggested but keep altogether a separate article as per Peall's sun's proposal . --Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 14:13, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I agree with the aforementioned; a summary here and more details in Tamil Nadu-Kerala dam row. The controversy seems notable enough for a separate article. Particularly a controversy on an existing dam.--NortyNort (Holla) 20:53, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Concrete?

edit

This book states that the dam was built with concrete filling (refer pages 182 and 188). Nevertheless, I am not sure of the reliability of the source. But this contradicts the commonly mentioned lime stone and "surkhi" filling. --Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 15:06, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

On the contrary, it was filled with concrete and faced with rubble vide the builder himself. However, in those days, in my opinion, as per my knowledge, concrete in India was created by heating limestone (to make hydraulic lime), to which surkhi (powdered burnt brick), at times aggregate or pebbles were added. Also see Concrete#History. Prepared cement for a project would have to be imported from Europe at much greater cost than lime can be made (even today). The project already had financial problems so it is highly unlikely costly cement would have been imported when limestone is so cheaply available over all of India. So the concrete was probably lime-surkhi concrete not cement concrete. The rubble would probably have been held together with lime mortar. In the diagram of Pennycuick, the central part of the dam is mentioned as the concrete filling and the facings are rubble, not vice versa as people sometimes think. Discussion about ownership of the dam

edit

I had see many people are editing about ownership of the Dam to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Please have a discussion about ownership of the dam. Please provide only Govt of India and state Govt citation/proofs.

It is given in the TN govt official website that Mullaperiyar Dam has leased to TN by Kerala. So the State of Kerala owned this Dam. [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nubin wiki (talkcontribs) 17:06, 23 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Both the provided citations are straight from the TN CM 's comments, i don't think we need a more a clear info, we cant assume the ownership to be Kerala until or otherwise specified.

The 999 lease is only for the Land that is submerged due to the dam water and not for the Dam, Yes, since the dam is built on the land the dam is assumed to be on lease. Moreover we don't always need a Govt official report in wiki, any trustable source pointing to the exact line should be enough. Please discuss before remove the provided citations, We currently have 2 citations, Please provide atleast one that clearly states that the Dam is owned by Kerala. Spelling mistake

edit

hello friends,

As far as i know the dam is called by the name "mullaiperiyar dam" In tn and all tamil websites.the headings and the spelling of dam's name is quoted in the article as "mullaperiyar" which hence becomes a Malayali Name this creates a dispute, confusion and questions wikipedia of its central stance on this issue.Even the name of dam is been written in tamil for many yrs in newspapers as "முல்லைப்பெரியார் அணை ". so can u reconsider the spelling of name.if i am wrong in my stance please notify me

Central stance is to retain the name 'Mullaperiyar' as the Dam is owned by Kerala and all the English language documentation except from TN written as described above. Abhilashkrishn (talk) 04:19, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well, the dam is never owner by Kerala. Only the land submerged under the dam water is under the lease for 999 years and hence some assume that the dam to be under lease which is a complete wrong. Also the provided citation clearly states that the dam is owned, operated and maintained by Tamil Nadu state. Pearll's SunTALK 08:08, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proof required regarding 'central stance' and Mullaiperiyar finds pretty much the same kind of mention across several national and international media. I have provided for the sources in the article.--CuCl2 (chat spy acquaint) 16:25, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

==Disputed ownership==

There is a continuing flip-flop of edits about which state has ownership, and no significant consensus from the previous talk page discussions, which have arguments for either Kerala or Tamil Nadu that have obviously not been fully resolved. It is better not to state an ownership until such consensus can be reached. Dl2000 (talk) 00:17, 28 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

The "National Register of Large Dams (NRLD)" [1] clearly mentions that the "4(four) Dams namely Mullai Periyar(Periyar),Thunacadavu,Parambikulam and Peruvaripallam are located in Kerala State and are operated and maintained by Tamil Nadu PWD.". So where does the dispute arise? In addition to this the ex-Chief Minister to "Tamilnadu" has clearly clarified the ownership of these dams.[2]. If we keep adding dispute based on ever single politicians comments then almost ever single article on wiki would have a dispute tag. Lets take the "National Register of Large Dams (NRLD)" entry as a proof and mention "Tamilnadu" to both own a operate these 4 dams which are located within Kerala Borders.
