Early life
Singer Srinivas was born on 7 November 1959 at Ambasamudram in Tamil Nadu. He was born to Duraiswamy and Lakshmi. During his formative years at Trivandrum, he learned classical music under guidance of his aunt and guru Smt. Padma Narayanan. While the household was filled with music, Srinivas did not have a regimental training – but continued to learn during the years of till 1976. He had the opportunity to attend concerts of stalwarts like Semmangudi Srinivas Iyer. As a student, he participated and won prizes in Carnatic music in interschool and intercollege competitions. He went on to graduate in Chemical Technology specializing in Dyes at UDCT Bombay (now known as ICT), and worked for 12 years shuttling between cities Bombay, Hyderabad, Madras, Ahmedabad, finally settled at Coimbatore as the Regional Sales Manager – Southeast Asia for a reputed Dyestuff manufacturing firm.
During late school – early college, Srinivas used to listen to ‘Binaca Geetmala’ on Vivith Bharathi, which was the starting point of his fascination with Hindi music, particularly Kishore Kumar, RD Burman. He grew fond of Tamil music composed by Ilaiyaraaja at that time. He took interest towards ghazals, with Mehdi Hassan, Jagjit Singh and Hariharan being strong influences. Other singers who had an influence on him include KJ Yesudas, Lata Mangeshkar, the combination of Janaki-M.S Baburaj and Hindustani musicians like Kumar Gandharva and Bhimsen Joshi. [citation needed]
Career
Even while Srinivas was pursuing his corporate career, he first met with Ilaiyaraaja in 1988 and handed him over a ghazal tape. Gauging his potential, Ilayaraja’s office had called with an opportunity for a song recording a few weeks later. But it did not work out since he was suffering from a serious throat infection that day. Attempts he made following this incident for singing opportunities with Ilaiyaraaja did not materialize. In the interim he had connected with Vidyasagar, who was then a musician aspiring to be a music director. Srinivas started singing jingles and tracks for Vidyasagar during 1989-1990. During this time Srinivas was still working on his corporate job, leaving from Chennai to Ahmedabad, where work kept him busy. And then he shifted to Coimbatore in 1991. In 1992, the soundtrack of Mani Ratnam’s tamil film Roja reignited his dreams of playback singing. A.R.Rahman debuted as a composer in this movie and went on to change the Indian music scene. Encouraged by the use of fresh voices and sounds in Roja, Srinivas approached Rahman. Rahman took a liking to his rendition of Mehdi Haasan’s ghazals and offered him work at Chennai.
Srinivas moved back to Chennai for good in 1993 with the intent of seriously pursuing music and connected with music directors. His first ever film song was in Vidyasagar’s music for the Telugu movie One By Two. By then he was a regular at Rahman’s studios singing tracks for several songs. For the movie Thiruda Thiruda, he recorded a short Pallavi version of ‘Rasaathi’ with lyrics different from the original, which was used in the movie. He also worked with Mahesh, for whom he used to sing jingles, and also recorded a track for the song ‘Sorgam Enbathu Namakku’ for the movie Nammavar starring Kamal Haasan. Later Mahesh decided to retain the voice, making it his Tamil playback singing debut in 1994. The song had Swarnalatha singing along, and was a runaway hit.
Post this he started singing with ARR – with his first song being ‘Mellisaiye’ in the movie Mr.Romeo. Interestingly, when the audio cassette was released, it did not have his name in credits. While Srinivas continued to sings tracks and chorus for ARR, he gained recognition with the song ‘Ooh La La La’ in the movie Minsara Kanavu (1997) in which he had sung in the Hindi and Telugu versions as well. ‘En Uyire’ from Mani Ratnam’s Uyire in the year 1998 got his lot of acclaim. He further sang sensational hits for Rahman such as Kaiyyil Midhakkum (Ratchagan - 1997), Mudhal Murai Killi Paarthen (Sangamam - 1999), Chotta Chotta Nanaiyudhu – (Taj Mahal - 1999), Kai Thatti Thatti (Jodi – 1999). His biggest of breaks came with the movie ‘Padayappa’ starring Rajinikanth in 1999, where he originally sang the track for ‘Minsaara Poove’. Rajnikanth on listening to the track and original version recorded by a different singer, decided Srinivas’s voice suited the better, making it his biggest hit song of all time. The song also landed Srinivas his first Tamil Nadu Government State award for Best Male Singer. He continued to sing hit songs in other Rajinikanth starrers such as Kochadaiyaan and Lingaa. Other noteworthy songs in Tamil with ARR include ‘Endendrum Punnagai’ and ‘Snehidhane’ – (Alaipayuthey – 2000), ‘Azhake Sugama’ ( Paarthaale Paravasam - 2001), ‘Endhan Nenjil’ (Alli Arjuna - 2002) where he had sung alongside singer Janaki, ‘Ye Manpuru Mangaye’ (Guru - 2007) and ‘Muzhumadhi’ (Jodha Akbar - 2008). During this time, he was working closing with ARR as an associate, spending a lot of time in the studio singing tracks, teaching the singers, supervising the recordings. Srinivas had sung several songs in Rahman’s Telugu albums. ‘Priya Priya’ which he sang in the Telugu version of ‘Jeans’ movie became hugely popular, resulting in his being referred to as ‘Jeans Srinivas’. Other popular songs with Rahman in Telugu include ‘Eeru Vaka’ (Oke Okkadu), ‘Vo Manmadhaa’ (Lingaa). His association with Rahman continues with songs ‘Ithu Thaan En Kadhai’ (Galatta Kalyanam – 2021) and ‘Veera Raja Veera’ in the Malayalam version of Ponniyin Selvan - II.

editSrinivas, an Indian playback singer, began his musical journey in 1992 after being inspired by the soundtrack of Mani Ratnam's Tamil film "Roja," which featured fresh voices and sounds by debut composer A.R. Rahman. Encouraged by Rahman, Srinivas relocated to Chennai in 1993 to pursue music seriously. His first film song was for the Telugu movie "One By Two" in Vidyasagar's music. He gained recognition with his rendition of Mehdi Haasan's ghazals, leading Rahman to offer him work in Chennai. [1][2][3][4]
Srinivas collaborated extensively with Rahman, singing tracks for several films. His notable works include "Mellisaiye" from "Mr. Romeo" (1996) and "En Uyire" from "Uyire" (1998). He achieved widespread acclaim with hits like "Minsaara Poove" from "Padayappa" (1999), earning him his first Tamil Nadu Government State award for Best Male Singer. Srinivas continued his successful collaboration with Rahman, contributing to songs like "Endendrum Punnagai" and "Snehidhane" from "Alaipayuthey" (2000) and "Muzhumadhi" from "Jodha Akbar" (2008).[5][6][7][8][9][10]
Apart from Tamil, Srinivas also worked on Telugu albums with Rahman, earning the moniker "Jeans Srinivas" after the popularity of his song "Priya Priya" in the Telugu version of the movie "Jeans." His association with Rahman extended to Malayalam, with recent contributions to films like "Galatta Kalyanam" (2021) and the Malayalam version of "Ponniyin Selvan - II." Throughout his career, Srinivas has been known for his versatile voice and close collaboration with A.R. Rahman.[11][12][13][14][15][16] Mayamusique (talk) 07:31, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
