Suburbs?
editThe places listed as suburbs are detached communities many miles and more than an hour's drive from the Twin Ports, should they be listed as such? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:18b:301:ba80:ec66:3fd4:bf52:dae8 (talk) 01:13, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
- Probably not. I think that it was a two step process that took it in that direction. One is a segue from twin ports to the MSA which is a massively larger area. And that led to inclusions of a huge amount of more distant towns which are in the MSA. In other words, massive off-topic additions. - Definitely not. I live in Hibbing, and nobody here would call us a suburb of Duluth. It would make about as much sense as calling Rochester or St Cloud suburbs of Minneapolis and St Paul. In fact it would make even less sense, as Rochester is much closer to the Twin Cities than we are to Duluth, as well as the fact that the Twin Cities are much larger than Duluth is, and there's actually things in between them as opposed to the 120 km of wilderness and farms here. - Definitely is. A suburb is any city that is in the metro but not a principal city. Any city that is in the counties listed as part of the MSA by the US Census is considered a suburb. Duluth is the principal city of the Duluth MN-WI MSA / Twin Ports MSA and any city in St. Louis, Douglas, Carlton and Lake county is a suburb. Superior, Ely, Cloquet, Hibbing and Virginia are all considered suburbs by the US Census which is a government organization and whom controls MSA. Rochester is not considered a suburb of Minneapolis-St.Paul-Bloomington due to Olmsted County which is the county Rochester lies in is not one of 15 counties included in the Twin Cities MSA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.199.184.200 (talk) 04:41, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- Not by any definition that most readers would recognize. While "suburb" is an ill-defined term, most Americans would recognize it as the medium-density areas surrounding an urban city. The idea that anyone would recognize Orr as a suburb of Duluth is laughable.
Additionally, the Census Bureau website that was used as a supposed source makes no mention of the term "suburb." As such, I'm reverting it. There's a case to be made for including the other towns that are in the MSA, but not for calling them suburbs of Duluth. --Sable232 (talk) 22:38, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

- Agree with Sable232, and they are putting it mildly. There is no basis for a claim that everything in the MSA is a suburb or a part of the metropolitan area. North8000 (talk) 02:47, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
The article is currently confusing; the MSA population of 291k is quoted multiple times but the listed cities only add up to 152k and it’s not inherently obvious that that’s because other cities in the counties are not being included. I would suggest adding another subheading—call it Other Parts of St Louis and Lake Counties or whatever, it doesn’t have to be about if they’re suburbs—to clarify this. - I did a few tweaks to mitigate the problem.North8000 (talk) 14:37, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
St Louis County
editWhy is the entirety of St Louis County considered part of the Duluth metro area? Duluth is closer to Minneapolis and St Paul than the top of the county, and most of the county is empty. Malcolmmwa (talk) 22:39, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- We might as well just consider Duluth to be part of the Twin Cities. It makes about as much sense. Malcolmmwa (talk) 22:43, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- I agree, this is basically the same topic as the next section up/above. North8000 (talk)
"Statistical area" is off topic
editWhile brief mention of the statistical area would be fine, it is a larger area that is not the topic of this article.North8000 (talk) 17:30, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
- I took out the stuff that misrepresented the MSA as being the topic of the article. North8000 (talk) 00:53, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
