Black genocide

edit

Created by Binksternet (talk). Self nominated at 06:57, 16 April 2014 (UTC).

  • This impressive article meets the DYK criteria of length and newness. The image is appropriately licensed and QPQ has been done. My quibble is with the hook, and I suggest ALT1 or something equivalent would be better. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:13, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Yes, your ALT1 conforms better to the reference. Binksternet (talk) 15:34, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
  • I've pulled the hook because it seems like the hook was tangential to the article itself, and a more relevant fact could be used. The combination of the picture and the hook wording made it seem like the focus was on Angela Davis, not on black genocide. Sven Manguard Wha? 14:30, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Adding icon to indicate there's an issue raised, so this doesn't have a tick as its most recent review icon. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:41, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Sven, the hook and the fact of Davis's doubtful stance on the topic are part of the topic, not tangential to it. I combed through the article to find something that would attract eyeballs at DYK, and Angela Davis was one of the obvious choices. Another one would be Jesse Jackson discussing birth control and abortion. Another one would be Paul Robeson talking about lynching and discrimination. And so on, and so on... Why are you preventing me from choosing Angela Davis who definitely expressed her feelings on the subject? Binksternet (talk) 05:13, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Your wording answers that for me: "choosing Angela Davis". My concern is that the wording of the hook, combined with the image, make it centered on Angela Davis, not on Black genocide. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:17, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
  • I don't think that the hook is 'centered' on Davis; it is a statement about her appreciation of black genocide, which is of course the DYK article. A lot of people share her view—it is not atypical. I chose Davis and this image to engage more new readers, which is the purpose of DYK. It would be unfortunate for the article if you vetoed the Davis hook.
Do you have an equally effective hook in mind? Binksternet (talk) 00:42, 1 May 2014 (UTC) (Pinging Sven Manguard to get this nomination rolling again.) Binksternet (talk) 22:22, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

This nomination is the subject of a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Dispute over black genocide hook. Please do not promote it until there is a resolution there. Sven Manguard Wha? 13:53, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

  • There's no way that this deserves the X icon, which means this is the next thing to being rejected outright. This is a disagreement over the hook, now referred to the DYK talk page and with every expectation of being resolved in the reasonably near future. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:05, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Okay, folks, let's not get too tied up in sideline issues. This nomination has not contravened any DYK guidelines, so I would like to see it propelled forward by a courageous reviewer. Binksternet (talk) 07:36, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I agree with Sven: let's focus on the concept of Black genocide, and not an individual who has commented on it. Something about the belief in black genocide in relation to the Pill? Like "... that birth control pills have been considered implements for committing genocide against Blacks?" — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:11, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Okay, above is my third version, alt 2. Binksternet (talk) 05:42, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
  • That's interesting. Sven, any opinion? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:25, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Is there a reaon black is capitalised? Thanks, Matty.007 13:04, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Sources can be found capitalizing the racial term Black, and also using lower case. It sure looks like consistency would be served by using lower case. Thanks for your note! Binksternet (talk) 16:30, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Okay, I noticed nobody commented at Sven's post, Dispute over black genocide hook, before it was archived, so now I'm simply looking for someone to give ALT2 a quick look and approval. Everything else has been vetted. Cwmhiraeth, want to give it one last shot? Thanks in advance. Binksternet (talk) 21:52, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
  • ALT2 has inline citations and is acceptable. The article and hook meet DYK criteria in other respects. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:05, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
