Transjakarta Corridor 2

The Transjakarta Corridor 2 is a bus rapid transit corridor in Jakarta, Indonesia, operated by Transjakarta. It connects the Pulo Gadung Bus Terminal in East Jakarta to the Monumen Nasional BRT station in Central Jakarta. The streets that are passed by Corridor 2 are Perintis Kemerdekaan, Letjen Suprapto, Imam Sapi'i.e., Kwini II, Abdul Rahman Saleh, Pejambon, Medan Merdeka Timur, Perwira, Katedral, Ir. H. Djuanda, Veteran III, and Medan Merdeka Utara streets, and terminates at Monas. In the opposite direction, the route passes Medan Merdeka Barat, Medan Merdeka Selatan, and Kwitang Raya streets, then continues at Letjen Suprapto Street towards Pulo Gadung. This corridor is integrated with the Pasar Senen railway station, which serves the KRL Commuterline and the intercity train services via Pasar Senen BRT station and the Juanda railway station, which serves KRL Commuterline service only via Juanda BRT station.

History

edit

Early operational

edit

Corridor 2 was inaugurated on January 15, 2006, along with Corridor 3. The inauguration coincides with the Corridor 1 inauguration two years earlier.[5][6] The inauguration received high enthusiasm from the people of Jakarta.[7] At the same time, Transjakarta targeted that there would be 71 new bus fleets serving Corridor 2 and 3 in April 2006, or three months after the first day of operation.[8]

Route extension

edit

On May 19, 2014, the route was extended 7.61 kilometers from Pulogadung 1 (now Pulo Gadung) to Ujung Menteng in Bekasi. It is the first Transjakarta corridor to cross the border of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta area. The new bus stops are Raya Bekasi KIP, Raya Bekasi Tipar Cakung, Cakung United Tractors, Raya Bekasi Pasar Cakung, Raya Bekasi Cakung Cilincing, Raya Bekasi Pulo Gebang, and Raya Bekasi Ujung Menteng.[9][10] At the original time of opening, 4 bus stops in Kota Harapan Indah, 2 in Estate entrance and 2 near Family Market (one for each direction) were not yet ready, however (at the end of May 2014), they were completed and the route was extended to Harapan Indah.[11]

The extension route was initially operating as a BRT route, coded as 2E. Sometime later, it was renamed into route 2B and converted into an integrated non-BRT feeder route, where the existing BRT-level stops on the road median were still served by buses added with number of feeder stops on road side.[12] As of September 19, 2023, the route was fully converted into a non-BRT feeder route, using Metrotrans low-entry buses and only serves feeder stops. The BRT-level stops are no longer used.[13]

Further developments

BRT station revitalization

edit

On early 2020, as the impact of the Senen traffic tunnel (Underpass Senen) extension, the Senen (now Pasar Senen) station was moved into a temporary building.[14] After the tunnel extension construction completed, Transjakarta began to rebuild the BRT station and renovate its access bridge.[15] The new Senen (now Pasar Senen) BRT station was inaugurated on November 22, 2020, with all new facilities, such as elevators on the renovated pedestrian bridge that has a design that resembles the piano keys.[16]

On April 15, 2022, to improve service quality and to create a seamless integration with other transportation modes (such as the KRL Commuterline), and also as a follow-up of the new Senen (now Pasar Senen) BRT station, one of the BRT stations on Corridor 2, namely the Juanda BRT Station was temporarily closed for revitalization along with other stations on Corridors 1, 5, 9, and 11.[17][18] As an alternative, a shuttle bus route named 2ST that serves the route from Pecenongan–Juanda has been prepared to support waiters during the bus stop revitalization process.[17][18] Other stations on Corridor 2 that were revitalized were the Kwitang in June 2022, which was already demolished in June 2021, and the Balai Kota station on 2020, due to both station building being very small and not enough to accommodate 1 series of articulated bus.[19] Those revitalized stations were also followed by the Pulo Gadung 1 BRT station as the terminus of this corridor and its transfer station, Pulo Gadung 2 which serves Corridor 4. Pulo Gadung 1 BRT station began its revitalization since September 6, 2022.[20] The Kwitang and Balai Kota BRT Stations were reopened on August 11[21][22] and August 22, 2022[23][24] respectively, and the Juanda BRT station on March 4, 2023.[25][26] On April 18, 2023, the Pulo Gadung 1 BRT station was reopened and the revitalized station building has been unified with the transfer station Pulo Gadung 2 into a single Pulo Gadung station, so passengers are no longer required to exit paid area to transit between Corridor 2 and 4.[27]

Later on June 2, 2023, the Pulo Mas BRT station was also temporarily closed for revitalization.[28] After that, the station was reopened on October 7, 2023.

Temporary readjustment

edit

Harmoni BRT station used to be the terminus of Corridor 2 which also served Corridor 1, 3, and 8. It was the busiest station on the Transjakarta BRT system. Due to the construction of the second phase of the Jakarta MRT, the Harmoni station was temporarily moved into a temporary building starting from March 4, 2023[3] until the MRT construction completed in 2027–2029, because the existing permanent building was demolished for the construction of the Harmoni MRT station. The temporary building doesn't have enough capacity to serve high density of passengers, so Transjakarta decided that it would only serve Corridor 1 and temporarily moved this corridor's terminus to the Monumen Nasional BRT station near the National Monument.[1][2][4]

List of BRT stations

edit
  • As the impact of the Jakarta MRT construction, Corridor 2 temporarily terminates at the Monumen Nasional BRT station starting from March 4, 2023, until the completion of the MRT construction in 2027 or 2029. As the result, Corridor 2 currently does not stop at Harmoni.
  • Currently, all stations are served by buses 24 hours a day.[29]
