Chao Phraya Sky Park ( Thai: สวนลอยฟ้าเจ้าพระยา) is an urban linear park in Bangkok, located in the middle between two lanes of Phra Pok Klao Bridge. It was renovated from an old sky train project into a park which is inspired by the Memorial Bridge, designed by UDDC. There is the new model for sky bridge in Bangkok that everyone as an accessible by bus, boat and MRT. Moreover, there are many landmarks that are suitable for traveling near Chao Phraya Sky Park.

Design

edit

An architect from N7A named Mr. Chakdao Navacharoen (Thai: จักรดาว นาวาเจริญ) said the initial issue was quite challenging. The first building was constructed for the electric train project. The first drawback is that the project's placement is between a driveway with three lanes on both sides, making the bridge's walkway extremely small. However, the project's location is a benefit. Although it is obstructed by traffic on the Phra Pok Klao Bridge, it is still possible to see both the Memorial Bridge and Wat Arun.

Design description

Mr. Chakdao explains the project step by step. The design team found a bridge shape and raised the area first, such as Underneath a railroad track, a walkway for people to use to elevate the Brooklyn Bridge. Even though, their project isn't big enough to add another floor in terms of budget and available space. There must be at least one raised pedestrian area in the project. Second, Contemporary identity is important. They constructed a concept without needing to add too many Thai symbols. Find something accessible, like gardens and trees, that is also global. They take this shape by seeing it like a hill. Furthermore, a raised area is also necessary. In relation to the arc position, The Memorial Bridge structure has a concordant with the walkway in the park. Design team is interested in the wide bridge, which is only 10 meters long and 280 meters long. You will see another side if you walk straight. It discourages your desire to walk. They found a technique for extending the distance to user fulfillment. There are 2 alternatives that enable users to walk up to enjoy the view at a height higher than the roof of the car and people who utilize it fast, such as bikers who are on their bikes and walk. It is a modern design in the eyes of the new generation. When people walk, they also don't know the actual distance because they can't see the opposing sides and there are hidden path curves. As a result, your feelings are becoming more distant.

The design started in 2015. Actually, construction took only a year. Their challenge is they can't park their cars on the Phr Pok Klao Bridge and use a crane to lift material up. They couldn't get the motor pump up to cast the concrete on the top, so they selected to use a system of disassembling the material and using humans to assemble it later. They consider multi-functional ways to use a single material. For instance, it could serve as a barrier to define the garden's limits, can shield people from moving cars, planters, partially soundproof material and the material must be light. Since the existing bridge structure was unable to support extra weight, they used lighter materials. After that, they come up with the idea of using GRC blocks as all the materials to put them together into various blocks, such as a block for a plant or a block that can be used as a railing that can be inserted into a steel pipe or pipe. As a point of care material According to Mr. Chakdao, the nature of the bare material is antiquated by itself. The GRC block presently looks white, but after it has passed, the color will change to orange or yellow. The color will meld with the materials used in the corridor and with the landscape design to conjure up images of beautiful concepts and imperfections. For the water system, Chao Phraya sky park is adjoining river. The design team couldn't pump water from the river at all because Bangkok is an estuary, the salinity of Chao Phraya River is so high that they can't water plants. They use a water pipe system that uses less water and stores some water, it is the same from another park in Bangkok.

Mr. Chakdao emphasizes the importance of safety; his team learns about the connection between distance and vehicle speed. It is dangerous if the driver turns to see. His team creates railings for users that are based mainly on safety distance calculations. If there is a walkway that is far from the road, they install a low-profile railing and a hedge. A portion of the walkway is elevated by 2-3 meters to stop people from accidentally dropping objects over onto the road. Guardrails at Chao Phraya Sky Park are thought to be safer compared to those at other parks. Additionally, the park has been installed with CCTV cameras and has a precise open and close time. However, there is a path that cannot be closed between The Phra Pok Klao Bridge and Chao Phraya Sky Park. It still needs user surveillance.

Limitation

Serisakul (Thai: ผศ.ดร. นิรมล เสรีสกุล) said "She would have loved to have had trees that provide a vast area of shade, thickly planted to ensure full coverage of passers-by in a tropical city like Bangkok". This plan was unattainable due to the structure's weight capacity, the amount of soil and water required to support enormous shade trees and the ability to withstand strong winds on the bridge. The designers had fewer alternatives for planting plants and trees as a result.

Recognizing that the Sky Park required simple and effective upkeep was another restriction. Flowers and plants that needed a lot of maintenance were therefore not included. In addition, the layout and placement of the foliage had to adhere to safety regulations for drivers. They couldn't hinder the driver's vision on either side of the King Prajadhipok Bridge's opposing lanes. Therefore, it was necessary to exclude any trees or foliage that would develop in a way that would impair a driver's view or break and scatter during a tropical storm.[1][2]

Green space for future

edit

A futuristic design that will serve as a template for repurposing numerous derelict buildings in the city is the Chao Phraya Sky Garden. More green spaces will be created in the city thanks to this strategy. The methodology will be used for projects and gives cities new options for urban mobility. There will be a lot more things that will occur. In order to achieve a higher standard of living than is already the case.

The Chao Phraya sky park occurs to see the possibility of changing existing places into green spaces. For example, the Green Bridge is a walkway structure and an elevated bicycle path that connects Lumpini Park and Benjakitti Park. Originally, this bridge has been in operation for more than 20 years and it can be seen that the area is dilapidated. It makes the lack of urban connection makes the green bridge very difficult to access. But today, the green bridge gets greener, becoming another green zone to connect the community connection zone. The area has been changed to allow the park area to be used more efficiently than before.

According to a survey by UddC, Bangkok citizens must travel 4.5 kilometers on average to go to the closest park area, which is seen as being very far. They are presenting a strategy to enhance green space in Bangkok that fits together like a jigsaw puzzle such as sky gardens, green bridges, or renovations under expressways that can shorten the average distance that people must travel to get there. As shown by Asst. Prof. Niramon. Expanding the number of green spaces is a key policy in Bangkok. 9 square meters per person, as opposed to the present 5-6 square meters per person The World Health Organization (WHO) states that in addition to its relevance for urban health, green is also essential for a city's branding. The government wants to attract the top companies in the world to invest in Bangkok and other Thai cities, if an investor were to look at the country's don't have more green spaces that make this country diminishes investment attractiveness.

When the sky garden project is successful, the Rattana Kosin-Thonburi region will see an almost twofold increase in the score of pedestrian accessibility from 49% to 76% which is a very positive figure. It is simpler for individuals to walk to their destination now that the sky garden has emerged. Whether activities like going to school, working, traveling, shopping, etc. This significantly extended the pedestrian. This implies that a lot of opportunities will also be available. As more visitors come to the area, traffic and carbon dioxide levels may decrease.

Private cars: You can park your car at Pak khlong (Flower Market) and walk to Chao Phraya Sky Park about 800 meters.[3]

Activity

edit

By dividing this long, narrow space into two interconnected passageways, designers were able to create rooms out of it. Ultimate space perception is made possible by the two split pathways weaving. Various speeds and activities, including walking, jogging, biking, and roaming the bridge park, are available thanks to its divided spatial linear forms. A portion of the path is winding up to form the hilltop walkway curve of The Sky Park bridge at the intersection of the two divided pathways in the middle of the park. For special events, the tiny cascading steps carve out sitting sections and a linear performance stage.[4]
