Applications for free, full access, 1-year accounts from HighBeam Research officially open

The applications for 1000 free accounts is now officially open until April 9th. I have the account codes in my email box and we are ready to go. This week's main goal is promotion. Several editors have already done a great job of getting the word out, but there is still time to make sure people don't miss out on the opportunity. Please tell your Wikipedia friends, WikiProjects, non-English Wikipedias, and anywhere else you think people would benefit from knowing. You can record your progress at WP:HighBeam/Promotion where we're keeping track of all of the notifications. Thanks so much for your help! I'll keep you posted. Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 20:45, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for your support at my RfA. I will do my best to live up to people's confidence in me. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:47, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

אומלו

It might have been better to transwiki the article to he:אומלו, which as this shows was almost certainly the intention of the creator.  --Lambiam 07:14, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Good idea. I'd like to do that, but I don't understand the transwiki procedure well and I don't want to mess things up. This help page seems to be outdated. I can move the deleted content to the user space User:Gilo.12/אומלו and direct the creator to the correct location at Hebrew אומלו. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 08:14, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
That's maybe best. The user seems to be struggling with our wiki conventions and is apparently unaware of the existence of a separate Hebrew Wikipedia, so rather explicit direction may be called for.  --Lambiam 08:49, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Okay. Moved and explained. Thanks for your assistance, Lambiam. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 09:10, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited The Indiana Theater, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Daviess County (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Your HighBeam account is ready!

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
    • Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
  • If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

Thanks for helping make Wikipedia better. Enjoy your research! Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 21:05, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Dobra Voda

Hi Vejvančický. I am trying to do some maintenance on Czech articles, particularly Dobra Voda. I managed to move Dobrá Voda to Dobrá Voda, Trnava District, because there are many places called Dobrá Voda. There is already a disambig page at Dobra Voda, but there is in fact only one page with this name (the others have diacritics).

What I want to do is:

  1. move Dobra Voda (currently a disambig) to Dobrá Voda, where it will continue to function as a disambig page.
  2. set Dobra Voda as a redirect to Dobra Voda (Peak).
  3. add a hatnote at Dobra Voda (Peak), such as {{Redirect|Dobra Voda|||Dobrá Voda}}.

Please can you assist with the first step; I think I will be able to complete steps two and three. Thank you. Cloudz679 10:09, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Ok, done. Please, let me know if I missed/confused something. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 07:09, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Looks good to me, good work. Thank you. Cloudz679 18:56, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Another move request

Hi again Tonda. I wonder if you can help move another page. It is Benice. Currently the Slovak village in Martin District. However, we can see at Benice (disambiguation) that there are multiple pages with this title. Could you please:

  1. Move Benice to Benice, Martin District
  2. Move Benice (disambiguation) to Benice over redirect

I will follow up by checking what links to Benice. Thank you for your time. Cloudz679 18:34, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Stories Project

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I'd very much like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project, or if you know anyone with whom I should speak.

Thank you for your time,

Czarnowcy

The short answer is that I have no idea. The slightly longer answer: I don't think it's in Bukovina (unless it's a bad approximation of Chernivtsi, the province's capital) - it may well be in Lviv, Zakarpattia or Ivano-Frankiv oblast. Something like Cherneve, perhaps. Or even Czarnów, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, although that's a small village, so probably not. Anyway, good luck. - Biruitorul Talk 13:37, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Hello Dimitri. The article Dexter Rosales has been deleted three times by various administrators, and then protected against re-creation. The article Dexter rosales has been deleted six times and then protected against re-creation. In November 2011, I've closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dexter rosales and deleted the article as WP:HOAX. At that time, it was impossible to verify that a football player of this name exists. Please, could you provide any reliable and independent edidence confirming that this football player meets our notability criteria? (... and I don't mean evidence of this kind). If so, I'm willing to discuss it further. Thanks for your understanding. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 06:34, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
P.S. I just checked the revision that I deleted. The article mentioned that Rosales played for Valencia FC and reserve teams of other notable clubs. There was a list of external sources in the deleted page, Dexter Rosales was not mentioned in any of the links, the FIFA and UEFA link referred to Landon Donovan. The article was a hoax. - Also from what i understand (Hoax) was copied and paste on a article(Landon Donovan) Due to amateur editing. Not that it was intentionally done to copy another player. please understand that not all of us are wikipedia friendly when it come to editing a bio.

- If you can please search well. we would be going thru this back and forth to try to resolve a small issue.

i will love to send archive and documents of the player (maybe i can,? if you can tell me where). then maybe you can help me edit a reversion on the artice (Dexter Rosales) the deadline for transfer windows opens in june and ends july, the last thing we need for a club president or team operation to search the player in wikipedia and find the following....

dkascovic@gmail.com is my contact if you also will like i would send my mobile.

please understand that there a miss understanding when coming from another country and try to build something in wikipedia.

Hello Dimitri. His alleged appearances in La Liga and negotiations with Ajax would be almost certainly noted by independent media, and they were not. The article has been deleted as a hoax, as it attempted to deceive readers using false references for the claims stated. Please, bear in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and as such, it covers football players who already achieved notability or 'fame'. According to the player's blog, you seem to be his manager and therefore you might have conflict of interest. This project is not a vehicle for enhancing career prospects of your clients. Gianluigi Quinzi

The page Gianluigi Quinzi was already deleted because it's considered as a case of WP:TOOSOON and also beacuse it did not meet notability requirements per WP:NTENNIS or WP:GNG, but now the player is n.2 in the World ITF Junior Ranking (Quinzi n.2) and he will play in 2012 Roland Garros Junior as seed number 2, so as one of the favourites! So, for me, for these motivations, the page mustn't be deleted! — Preceding unsigned comment added by RR6 (talkcontribs) 12:50, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello RR6. You are right. Our notability guideline for tennis players states: "Junior players are presumed to be notable if they have won at least a junior Grand slam title, have been in the top 3 of the junior ITF world rankings or can be shown to meet the wider requirements of WP:GNG." Mr Quinzi is currently #2 [1] of the junior ITF world rankings. I'll restore the article. With apologies --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 13:16, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Assessment

Deletion was (I'm relatively sure, can't actually see it) righteous; starting ANI not a good idea. If an editor receiving admin action refuses to accept your appropriate explanation, it's a very good idea to cease discussion and you're certainly entitled to tell to drop the stick on your talk page, but tell them they can start the ANI thread instead of starting it yourself. Nobody Ent 20:43, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

You are probably right. I have a little experience with this part of the admin work and I didn't want to sanction anyone. In my naivite, I just thought that I search for an independent assessment of my action. If I only knew... I can tell you... I would never do that again. Such a tirade :D It was the most disgusting experience during my work here. A perfect "online vomiting". Thanks gods it's over. Sorry. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 06:24, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello again

Thought I'd tell you I'm around again on a limited basis. The opening notes are sounding for another round of the danse macabre when everyone on Wikipedia feels entitled to rework the findings of international law on Srebrenica - triggered by the election of the new Serbian president, alleged murderous war criminal himself, who led the opposition in the Serbian parliament to acknowledging the ICJ/ICTY findings. Anyhow while I'm around, feel free to call on me for anything. Opbeith (talk) 17:03, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Just seen you must have just had a bit of a doing-over - sorry to hear it, but bon courage. You're one of the righteous - according to me anyway, and that's what counts! Opbeith (talk) 17:08, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Owen, you can't imagine how glad I am to see your message. Great news of the day :) I'm absolutely sure your presence at Srebrenica and Serbia related topics will contribute to a more neutral and overall better project. Don't let manipulators win :)
In the section above, you can see that I partially caused an ugly mess at ANI. What do you think about it? My action was a bit clumsy: I used the noticeboard (apparently intended only for serious admin interventions) for an open discussion without the slightest need to block or sanction anyone. However, the problem escalated and soon it was impossible to communicate in a normal way. I was rewarded with poison. Don't forget, I'm a member of the "evil admin" clan :D I wasted a lot of time of others, which is the saddest thing. But I keep smiling. The vineyards are healthy (so far) and my dog is successfully recovering from surgery of a large tumor. That's more important than senseless arguing through the computer screen. Today, I plan to write an article about a poem. A girl gave me a book called "Romance for a Flugelhorn". It's beautiful. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 07:10, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Please don't remind me you're a member of the "evil admin clan", remember I am a reprobate blockee from the other side of the San Andreas Fault! (Just removed some previous comments here as I found the thread of the argument and it seems unwise to risk entangling you in any recrudescence.) You may have been a little hasty but in the end you were right. You are about as fair a person as I have come across at WP and in the end you should feel happy to trust to your instincts - they will usually take someone like you to the right place. Opbeith (talk) 11:05, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
By the way I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the vineyard. This is the first year ever that the vine on the balcony here has had mildew, already. Opbeith (talk) 11:08, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind words ... I know that my initial reply to wolfchild wasn't too diplomatic. That's because when I see cowardice, I act impulsively.
Yes, mildew is a big threat to vineyards also here in Moravia. After several weeks of intense rain, now we have tropical weather. I spotted mushrooms (the older brothers of mildew) growing under bushes of my oldest vineyard. It is a reason to panic ... chemical treatment is usually inevitable. The vineyard is situated in a valley, near the woods, which is always dangerous, especially in this period ... it suffers because of ground frost, wet weather etc. Luckily, major part of my vineyards lies on a windy hill in a nearby village, and it's a far safer place ... Any grapes on the balcony this year? Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 12:06, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Given the complete absence of flowers, I have a strong suspicion that yet again the harvest will be a light one this year. Opbeith (talk) 20:44, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sushen. Wikipedia has its own rules of notability and neutrality, independent on wishes of your clients. This project is not an open business directory or free advertising space. You should avoid editing in the areas where you have a conflict of interest. See also WP:NOPAY. I'll watch your contributions. Editing of this kind (using "100% correct information" provided by a biased subject - a company who asked you to create an article here for money) is not acceptable here on Wikipedia. The content of Wikipedia articles must be backed up by independent and reliable sources. Thanks for your understanding. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 16:50, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Colmenares case

Hey, thanks for your support. I'm afraid this article is in the center of a heated dispute in Colombia. I did the edits with some fear. The prosecutor was removed from the case, witnesses have been bought, the family of the accused is a very wealthy one, the seventeen security cameras around the site of the murder were mysteriously erased, a group of people was (apparently) hired by the family of the indicted to defend his name in Facebook and social networks, the prosecutor received death threats and the family of the defendants hired conservative former General Attorney for the defense. On top of that the mother of the accused and his first lawyer are under trial for trying to put pressure on the Attorney's Office Director.

On the other hand, the lawyer for Jessi Quintero, one of the defendants renounced after receiving death threats on Facebook and the main witness is a dubious character. There is a clamor on Facebook for a guilty veredict, like in a typical mob trial.

I did my best to mantain a neutral tone, but frankly, I expect some vandals in this article. Thanks heaven this is the English version because it seems to me there is an editing war in the Spanish one... If you or any editor can keep an eye on this article, thanks. Newspapers here are filled with people complaining that the accused is guilty and that the only thing that could keep him away from jail is the wealth of his family. No matter how you see it, for the defense or the prosecution, this cannot be a fair trial. --Ciroa (talk) 15:41, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Uff ... and I thought my country is the most corrupted den in the world :) But it looks that bad things are very similar everywhere, no matter if you live in Europe or in Southern America. I wish you good luck, and yes, I'm watching the article. I defended it against deletion, but I wasn't sure if I made a good decision, the article was half-baked for a long time. Now it is better, thanks to you. Best regards. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 15:51, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Most corrupted country in the world? Oh, come on, you know that's a heavily contested prize. I don't know which country you are from, but hey, be real. Who can compete with developed countries? They are more subtle... :) You know the adage: if you want to find the criminal, follow the money, so I would concentrate in finding the deserved recipient of this award by selecting among those countries where the real money is. Besides it's possible Cárdenas is innocent (but not very probable, if you ask me: I'm an engineer trained for years to distinguish "possible" from "probable"... as much as possible). I agree with you on people being similar (emphasis mine) everywhere, but of course, not equal: we, Spanish-Americans, clearly rule. :) However, I believe it was Rosseau who said: "As we cannot change people, we don't stop changing the laws".
Good luck with the protection, I'm sure anyone changing the article will use its registered name, both sides tend to be cynical. You being so kind, I made some small corrections after your encouragement (I guess that's the reason why you make them) and I will update the article if I'm aware of new developments. I applaud your decision, oh wise and exalted editor, of not allowing the article to be deleted. That would be a huge Wiki-mistake, or Wikistake for short. This is kind of the Casey Anthony affair, Colombian version, but if Casey had be one of the Kardashians: pure 7 p.m. news adrenaline. The tactics of the defense are to delay as much as possible, so it might take a time before there is a verdict.
Finally, I strongly believe Colombia is not a corrupted country, no matter what you hear in the press. I'm not posting to complain, as it is so frequent about the world I live: if God (in which I don't believe, btw) appeared and asked me what do I think of this world, I would say: "Well, you have my complete approval, you did well, specially under the circumstances, dude". I think the majority of Colombian population has fought a very hard battle against narcotic trafficking and their (I'm a naturalized Colombian, I was born in Spain, olé) partial successes have depended on this "do good, no matter what" attitude. The fact of Colombian criminals being more powerful is not because they are more evil or because being born in this particular area of the planet magically infuses you with extraordinary abilities to do wrongs, it's simply they have more money because the war on drugs has created an inexhaustible business.
If there were high demand for, I don't know, drunken AK-47 wielding, Army recruited, Orthodox priests, which abound in Serbia (according to a crazy friend I have there in Vojvodina, whom I don't believe at all) then Serbian criminals would have a huge advantage. There is a huge demand for cocaine and let's be frank, here it is a wild weed, that's it.
I would like to highlight to you the character and tenacity of Antonio González, the prosecutor, against all odds and pressures that I think are very characteristic of people that complain little and work a lot. He's an example to the world, if you want to know my opinion. Any country in the world must be proud of this kind of people that exist everywhere, including your country, whichever it is. Remember John Lennon: "Imagine there's no countries..." etc. Kolik jazyků znáš, tolikrát jsi člověkem, or something like that. I'm taking a wild guess here, but perhaps you can watch Lenka Bradacová in action, smile for yourself and write something because there is no ffffuuu.. article about her in English Wikipedia, ehem. --Ciroa (talk) 18:01, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm from the Czech Republic, Ciroa, a country of unscrupulous thieves and people who work hard without complaining. It is my motherland but hell it is corrupted (trust an eyewitness). I believe it is a sad heritage of the communist era, where "He, who doesn't steal, steals from his family" was one of the most popular mottos. People still love to say that, with an amused smile, and often act accordingly. But I don't waste my time with complaining, I'm trying to help my friends and people I love, and to live happily, no matter how naïve I'am.
I love your observations, full of healthy skepticism combined with broad knowledge and imagination. The problem with the Colmenares article was that I can't read or speak Spanish and I was forced to deduce what's going on with the help of the G-translator. Not really professional, but it looks I'm one of the handful of people who care, so my limited abilities must suffice. The article speaks about living people involved in a criminal case, which could be dangerous to the people (I don't know who is guilty or innocent). Here on Wikipedia, anyone can edit and manipulate without much responsibility. This project is more and more visible, and can hurt. Just imagine your real name associated with a criminal act. The description of the case is unfinished (just as it was in the Colmenares case) and your name is exposed to inaccurate or outdated interpretations. It remains frozen in this unforgiving online memory where anyone can search it easily, and the associations could be misleading and hurt you. That's what I don't like. Thanks again for the updating.
I've learned not to believe media, and I'm even more skeptic in our high speed era. When the Slovak castle of Krásna Hôrka burned out this March, many of the world's leading news services simply copied the information from our crappy article, including incorrect declinations of the names of noble families. They made no effort to have things right. I'm talking about a globally unimportant event, but how can you trust them when they write about major conflicts and events that affect lives of millions if you know that they can't write responsibly about smaller topics? It's so sloppy and again, dangerous ... I think your thoughtful view of the situation in Colombia is more refreshing than the media stereotype (Colombia → paradise of drug lords).
You've mentioned Lenka Bradáčová, and that's the most surprising thing to me. Where did you hear about her? She is one of the key players involved in a current faux pas of the Czech prime minister. Yes, she certainly deserves an article here, but I like more writing about history, culture and art. Usually, I leave politics and news stories to others. But I share your admiration for this kind of brave people. (btw, Bradáčová is nicknamed 'Corrado Cattani in skirt' here in the Czech Rep. :)) --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 08:15, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
Well, my friend, you write very well (for an unscrupulous, hard working Czech thieve, that is). Thanks a lot for writing about what happens down here. Next time you have a hard time with Spanish translations, give me a call. If I ever run into Czech declensions, I will do the same (give my condolences to all high school students in your country, puberty is hard enough without having grammar in your way). Just one thing: the paradise of drug lords are the countries where drugs are prohibited. I hope you have a nice day, you made mine better, Señor Vejvančický. It seems to me that Bradáčová cannot use miniskirts (so her bollocks can be hidden from the view of the public...).--Ciroa (talk) 05:28, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Yor are funny Ciroa. My grammar is creaky, I'm an autodidact (if I don't count my sloppy studies cca 20 years ago). I've learned most of my English on Wikipedia :D Somehow I manage to survive here. Greetings to Colombia. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 06:30, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Talk page deletion

Hi! I see that you have not deleted but redirected the talk page Talk:Narayan Murthy. But i didn't understand why. I thought it was harmless to delete it and hence did not redirect it myself. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 19:00, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Usually, I redirect also talk pages, there's nothing wrong with that, see Help:Redirect or Wikipedia:Talk page redirects ...it's power of habit, I guess. But you are right, deletion would be probably harmless. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 06:30, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

I noticed you G3'ed this one, even though there is a IMDB page and other links. There is a related case at SPI regarding the author that I had declined on, then they reopened is why I ask. [2] I wasn't sure of the circumstances, which are a little unusual and was hoping for clarity here. Dennis Brown - © 11:52, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dennis. The article was nominated as a "fake". I searched for any reliable evidence confirming that Dariani Belle appeared in the shows (Karol Vega or Karol Brena in Fairy Pixie, Grachi). I found nothing. That's why I deleted the article as a hoax. I didn't check the SPI. Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 12:13, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
I had already pulled off a G1 CSD template on that article put there by User: Fernandobrasilien. And I noticed that a second editor, User:GRS73 placed a second template on the article right after I removed the first, which I found rather odd. Fernando is who filed the SPI, and GRS also mentioned the SPI in his tagging. Something just looks odd. The article may be fake, I just wasn't expected it would CSD, but rather AFD since it did make a claim and all, but that is your call to make. But again, the circumstances just look odd on the reporting end. Dennis Brown - © 13:01, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, but the claim was false which was noted by nominator and I agreed. That's all I can say. I think that Fernando and GRS visited us from Portuguese wiki, the article Dariani Belle has been deleted 3 times on '1 de julho de 2012' on pt:wiki. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 13:09, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Francisco Leandro, who started the SPI here (and the admin who blocked both the accounts and deleted the article on pt:wiki), discussed the case on pt:wiki with Fernandobrasilien today, GRS73 (Fabiano) interacted with Fernandobrasilien and apparently noticed the previous message on Fernando's talk page. All the editors met here. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 13:28, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Ah ok, that makes sense. You can see why it looked odd to me, I'm sure, but that they started on a different wiki and just ended up here makes sense. Thank you for taking the time. Dennis Brown - © 15:46, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

I do not know, but my cousin who should be moving these things.--Natalia Cannes (talk) 15:10, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

I think Belle Dariani've got nothing to Dari.--Natalia Cannes (talk) 15:13, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:36, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
