Unspecified source for Image:Gordon_Freeman_-_Valve_Concept_Art_-_Walking_with_a_crowbar_-_cropped.jpeg
editThanks for uploading Image:Gordon_Freeman_-_Valve_Concept_Art_-_Walking_with_a_crowbar_-_cropped.jpeg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 20:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: MediaWiki editing window extension - buttons
editDon't mean to bother you but I have looked around for a while for the answer to this question and I can't find it. Wondering if you might be able to help: I use the MediaWiki software on my school network for collaborative research projects with students and it works perfectly. However, I cannot find the extension that adds the extra ten editing shortcut buttons that appear to the right of the "horizontal line" button. These are visible in Wikipedia's edit window. Is there an extension for that or was this a custom coded bit of php added to Wikipedia...? Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks! κaτaʟavenoTC 14:30, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Mac OS X Box.jpeg
editThanks for uploading Image:Mac OS X Box.jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:04, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Mediawiki version 1.10 problem with cite.php
editI placed the " require_once( $IP.'/extensions/Cite/Cite.php' ); " on the line preceding the ending "?>" marker. What I noticed was that a page simply did not render at all when it had a <ref> text </ref> and <references/> tag. I have checked the file permissions on the extensions subfolder and files, and they appear correct. So this appears to be a bug, either in the extension or the instructions about installing the extension.
Is there a problem with version 1.10? I followed the instructions from http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Cite.php thanks Douglas R. White (talk) 18:09, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Template:Video Games
editA tag has been placed on Template:Video Games requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

Markup in references
editI've run into a problem in Cite.i18n.php that you may be able to help me with. I'm running some experiments to create print-quality PDF documents from Wikipedia. In the current markup in the generated list of references, visible markers (^, a, b etc.) are added to allow users to click their way back to the source of the reference. In print, however, these markers should not be visible. Given the current markup, it's impossible to remove the markers by way of CSS as there is no wrapper element around them. I therefore suggest adding a "span" element with a class name of "to-reference" or something so that one could remove these markers when printing the document. Howcome (talk) 20:30, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Cite.php
editHi,
I believe that you are the "keeper" of cite.php, though that is probably an incomplete understanding of cite.php ownership.
I would like to propose a cite.php enhancement to provide functionality similar to what I previously proposed with Bugzilla:12796. However, I would like to avoid the frustrating experience I had with Bugzilla:12796, which was apparently roundly ignored (see the comments on Bugzilla:12796).
Since I submitted Bugzilla:12796 (including code to implement it) cite.php has had support for group="group ID" added to it, invalidating the Bugzilla:12796 code. How would I properly propose a cite.php extension -- either in the form of a discussion to evolve requirements or in the form of a presumption of requirements and code to implement support for those presumed requirements? Did I miss doing some crucial step with Bugzilla:12796?
Thanks for any info. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 03:06, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Footnotes, clustered links
editDear Ævar, I have been irked by the lack of a few features in your Cite extension, which is otherwise very solid and useful. I spent yesterday afternoon checking out MW and coding it up. I have added two features:
- Support for nice footnote symbols. If you create a group called "footnote", you get a nice progression of *†‡ symbols etc. This is neat and works well, and should be pretty un-controversial.
- Secondly, and more majorly, I have built a parser stage that globs links to notes together. It maps [1][2][nb 3][5][nb 5][6][nb 4][7] ↦ [1,2,5-7,nb 3-nb 4] (an obviously extreme example to show the scheme). In general, the most common case is [13][14][15] ↦ [13-15], a large improvement. All links and things work nicely.
- There were a couple of spots in your code where you mentioned potential problems with the whole id-choosing scheme. There were indeed tricksy things you could do to break the old code by choosing group names with strategically placed hyphens. I have reworked the ref storing system and naming scheme slightly, so I think that my new code should be a little more robust to corner cases.
Now, the only things that might be controversial (after suitable testing of course) are that I have added a few extra regular expressions, but I think they are pretty quick ones. I have not benchmarked, but I think it should all be fine. I have it working nicely on my local machine, but I do not have a live test to demonstrate it.
I do not intend to contribute regularly to WM, so I do not plan on getting commit access or anything, so could you manage this for me? I have put the patch up at User:Kan8eDie/citepatch, but this may be against an older version, so I have put the whole files up at User:Kan8eDie/citebody, User:Kan8eDie/citeil8n. The documentation is not thorough, so I am happy to explain anything. Having spent half of yesterday afternoon on it, I would quite like to see it eventually used, if only as an optional feature.
Best wishes, Kan8eDie (talk) 11:55, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
Further comment: I have just found the talk page on meta, and read through it. It seems I am not alone to have had some of these ideas, and that there are more good thoughts, though most of them well out of date. Hidden refs in particular would be particularly trivial to add (the ability to mark a named link 'hidden', so that no link appears where the ref tag is placed). I could post the relevant one-liner here if people are interested. Sub-references, while a very nice idea, seem a bit too complicated and of questionable use, given the perfectly good distinctions that can be made with current systems.—Kan8eDie (talk) 13:32, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hello, I don't maintain the cite extension anymore, please file bugs in http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org and take this up in the appropriate MediaWiki forums (which I don't even know what are anymore, probably wikitech-l), thanks and sorry. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 15:54, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Message regarding your use of the No Multi License Template
editIn case you are not aware, the Wikimedia Foundation has proposed that the copyright licensing terms on the wikis operated by the WMF – including Wikipedia – be changed to include the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) license in addition to the current GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) as allowed by version 1.3 of the GFDL. The community has approved this change with 75.8% in favor, and on June 15, 2009, the change will take effect.
You currently have {{NoMultiLicense}} on your user or user talk page, which states that your edits are licensed under the GFDL only. On or before June 15, this template will be changed to reflect Wikipedia's new licensing terms. If you accept the licensing change, you do not need to do anything (and feel free to remove this message); if you do not accept it, we regret that you will no longer be able to contribute to the encyclopedia. Cite.php extension
editHi,

There are a number of "new" bugs in the wikimedia bugzilla system regarding this extension (including one I reported that should not take more than a few minutes to correct) and they don't seem to get any attention.

OpenStreetMap integration with MW
editHey Ævar,
I'd like to discuss the current plans to integrate OpenStreetMap with MediaWwiki with you as soon as possible. This is cause I wrote Maps and Semantic Maps (as part of my GSoC project for Wikimedia Foundation, mentored by Yaron Koren), and they are most likely a better choice then SlippyMap, since they are not limited to OpenLayers, and support many features SlippyMap does not. This is urgent, cause people might be doing work, or will do work, that already has been done, or will become obsolete.
Please contact me by email if possible (jeroendedauw -at- gmail -dot- com).

Appropedia assistance
editHey, I was wondering whether you are interested in joining Appropedia; we currently need someone with experience in the wiki-software; see http://www.appropedia.org/User_talk:Chriswaterguy#Members More precisely, we need to add some extensions/semantic updates to automate a few things (ie member listing, ...). Let me/us know if you're intrested or if you know someone that might be intrested. Bárðarbunga/ Grímsvötn
editTheoretically, this is english wikipedia with an english keyboard only ;) --Chris.urs-o (talk) 14:11, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- It isn't. It's not customary on the English Wikipedia to transliterate names so that they fit in the ASCII range. See the relevant pages on article naming conventions. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 15:14, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Icelandic pronunciation check (Eyjafjallajökull)
editHello, Ævar. I saw that you made a few comments at Talk:Eyjafjallajökull about the Icelandic language and pronunciation. I thought you might be a native speaker of Icelandic and would like to ask your help. Several people have requested a more clearly enunciated recording of the name of the volcano; would you mind reviewing this audio recording for its acceptability as a pronunciation example for this article? If you would prefer to make your own recording, that would also be great. Thanks! —Ka-Ping Yee (talk) 17:29, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
