But...

...I never had a 2600. I had an 8-bit. But the architecture of that machine was so approachable that I taught myself programming on it, and then branched out to learn all the other systems in the series. Those days no longer exist, but Flash is a good substitute. Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:25, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Congratulations, 28bytes! 25 of your new or expanded articles, mostly related to music and video games, have appeared on the DYK section of the main page. Keep up the good work. PM800 (talk) 23:43, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Good times roll

Haha, sorry buddy but i have to ask, how did you come up with power pop as the genre of good times roll?? How does the song even have pop in it?! I'll admit, ocasek's vocals do come off as a little popish but to label the song power pop is like to label metallica as a pop band! Do you see what i mean, but one genre i could make exceptions for is Rockabilly. But then i started to remember a little genre called art rock, and sense the song is kinda artish (mostly because the Rockabilly guitar solo), well i came up with art rock as the genre, plus it kinda has a pyhsedelic vocal tone (mostly the beginning) so i also put it as pyhsedelic rock. And i left the new wave genre alone. and hay, allmusic said it there self. MajorHawke (talk) 22:45, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

From here. But it's possible "Best Friends Girl" is "power pop" and "Good Times Roll" isn't. I don't particularly care, you can take it out if you want. Genres strike me as a very unimportant thing to worry about, but I know some folks take them Very Seriously. 28bytes (talk) 23:45, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Oh, well that's good to know. I never use to take genres as importance either, if it had powerful guitar riffs and progressive vocals i dismissed it as rock.. but now i face pop music. The cars genre is a world of confusion, and when i first hurd a song from them (bye bye love), i quickly new it was rock... but then i went on the internet, and a handful amount think it's pop (or pop\rock, depends on the person's perspective) and that was my first taste of wondering what pop really was. And i still dont know what pop really is. But in my opinion, at the end of the day, the cars wil always be a rock band. But yeah i do agree, songs like My best friends girl and just what i needed are unresistable power pop songs, but my best friends girl does have a art rock side to it, especially taking consideration of the guitar riffs. But as for the rest of the cars debut album, well it's just pretty much rock and new wave period, even allmusic backs me up on that one. But then after candy-o, they took a major approach to pop, poprock and suprisingly, punk rock. iv'e never faced such a multi-genre band in my life, and since then, iv'e become pretty much a genre freak. Well take care buddy, talk to you later! MajorHawke (talk) 01:00, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks so much, once again. More of same at SS. Cyril, Methodius, and Raphael's Church (New York City), in case you want to alert them. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:52, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

It doesn't go away, does it. The current set on the main page has a fairly significant inaccuracy, but as usual the sound of silence at WP:ERRORS is deafening. --Mkativerata (talk) 22:55, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Declining participation is affecting Wikipedia everywhere, Mk-- all content review processes are affected. We just don't have enough good editors and reviewers to keep up anywhere, period. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:02, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Further review of his talk page turned up this; Mk, I recently saw you had given up the tools. Don't know what happened, but dismayed. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:11, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Seeing main page debacles and not being able to fix them makes me think, momentarily, I was wrong to do so. But to be honest I haven't enjoyed editing so much as in the last few weeks since I've given up the tools. Selfish reason: I try to enjoy editing and I didn't enjoy being an admin. To avoid going too far off-track on 28bytes' talk page: 28bytes, I hope you throw your own hat back into the ring soon, if you're willing to do so. --Mkativerata (talk) 23:15, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Interesting ... there's lots of speculation about why I've never submitted to RFA, but one of the reasons is that I enjoy what I do, and I know it could interfere. I'd support 28 fersure. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:18, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks both for the vote of confidence! I've got a lengthy to-do list of non-admin work to keep me busy for the foreseeable future, but I too get frustrated seeing main page errors I can't fix, so I probably will try again at some point. 28bytes (talk) 23:39, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Move like This/Blue Tip(!!)

Wow, so your the one keeping The Cars album information up-to date, I like the Blue Tip article you created, can't wait to hear it, my speakers are broken at the moment.... Does it retain any Rock like there first and second albums?? Thanks.MajorHawke (talk) 20:23, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! Yep, it's similar in sound to some of the stuff on Candy-O. I'm keeping an eye out for more reviews so I can expand the article accordingly. 28bytes (talk)

Thanks!/Category's

Thanks! Actually I have herd of that album before. But I didn't think it was on a label, I thought it was just a fan-made album, nice to see it has a article at Wikipedia. And about the category's, I don't think it's necessary to delete all the "Category: Rock songs", I mean maybe the band is in the category already, but I notice you leave the "Category: Pop songs" in Cars songs alone, which doesn't make sense because The Cars have both rock and pop songs, and sometimes even mixed both Rock and Pop in song's like "It's All I Can Do" or "Just What I Needed". Well please take this into consideration, thanks!MajorHawke (talk) 22:33, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

I'll admit it's a little odd that there's a song category for 1970s pop songs but not 1970s rock songs. I'm not sure why that is, but that's the way they set it up. I've done some category rearranging before, so maybe this is something that needs to be considered. I'll give it some thought. 28bytes (talk) 22:38, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Creating a Wikipedia Article

Hey 28bytes,

I was wondering if you knew of any tutorials for creating a full valid wikipedia article. I could not find any videos of people doing it for tutorial purposes as an example. I am still really new to this.

76strat's RfA

I noticed your comments on their talk page, and my completely humble advice would be to let it go. Not because your concerns aren't valid, simply because there's no purpose in it. In terms of the amount of extremely harsh criticism, this is one of the worst I've seen in over a year (the worst in several months). This wouldn't have happened if they withdrew five days ago, but that's not the point. Look, I would imagine the candidate's either burned out and permanently demoralized or in DGAF mode. Based on their comments, what they perceived to be a loaded question was the final straw in a long line of incivility and lambasting. Fastily has demonstrated such unbridled incivility that were they to request the tools from the community I'd never again consider supporting (and yes, I've expressed my opinion to Fastily). They've been called a troll and a fuckup.

My point is that yes, they're shooting themselves in the foot. I don't suspect any continuation in your exchange will be productive. At this point, the best thing for this candidate would be encouragement not to leave as so many others have. There's nothing that bothers me more than to see that happen. Regards, Swarm X 01:23, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

You're absolutely right. After thinking about it for a moment, I have to admit that the unpleasant feeling of having my good faith questioned is not a tiny fraction of the unpleasantness MyStrat76 has had to deal with this week. Perspective is indeed important, so thanks for sending me some. :) 28bytes (talk) 01:44, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for being so reasonable yet again, I greatly respect that. Best regards, Swarm X 01:58, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Edit filter

Yikes! Thanks. Acroterion (talk) 02:08, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

No problem. (Interestingly, my first attempt at an undo triggered an edit filter itself.) 28bytes (talk) 02:13, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
My first administrative action ever was to accidentally block myself. Good thing we can undo/undelete pretty much anything. Acroterion (talk) 02:23, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
It's a rite of passage, I think. I came across the (surprisingly long) list of admins who'd accidentally blocked themselves a while back, and it was quite an amusing read. 28bytes (talk) 05:11, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Squeeb

Hi 28bytes. Just letting you know that I have deleted Squeeb as A1 (short text that does not identify the subject), not G1 (incoherent or gibberish, such as random hitting the keys on a keyboard). I know it's not always easy to know which criterion to use (I made plenty of mistakes myself when I first started) so if you're in doubt do have another look at WP:CSD, and as always, don't hesitate to ask me on my tp. Squeeb has been deleted several times before, so if it comes up again, let me know and I'll salt it. Take care, --Kudpung (talk) 06:14, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Well, it sure looked like nonsense to me, but if you think it made sense I will defer to your judgment. :) Regardless, thank you for deleting it. 28bytes (talk) 06:19, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Gimmie Some Slack

I created a new article called Gimmie Some Slack, it's a cars song, and better yet, a single. but i need help with sources and most of all, a infobox. I will help with the article regularly but unfortunately, my computer has a virus and is not working properly, so i have to go to the library and edit articles, and you only get a hour on the computers their. And by the way, sorry about the trouble I'm giving you with the categories. And yeah i understood you when you posted the section on my talk page, but i don't like Wikipedia's category rules. A Category Rock Songs gets created, but you cant post it a songs category section? Well anyway thanks for understanding my problem with the It's All I Can Do song's category, take care! MajorHawke (talk) 22:32, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi MajorHawke. I saw you created that; I've moved it to Gimme Some Slack (correct spelling). I'll try to dig up some sources for it. 28bytes (talk) 22:34, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Well I got the sources, now i need to format them right. MajorHawke (talk) 19:13, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

I'll be happy to format the Allmusic reference for you. We can't really use the lyrics site as a reference though, since those types of pages are essentially copyright infringement. The only time we can cite a lyrics page is if it's from an officially authorized site (for example, if Ric Ocasek or the band published a lyrics page on their own website.) 28bytes (talk) 19:22, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
Another good place to check for sources is Google News Archive. For example, doing a search on "Gimme Some Slack" gives this list of news stories, most of which require payment, but some, like this one have enough info in the abstract to be of use in writing an article. 28bytes (talk) 19:34, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Charles F. Watkins

I have now added my QPQ review for Charles F. Watkins. Please take another look when you have a chance. Thanks. Cbl62 (talk) 15:43, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

Rob Stone

No problem - the article is getting better. Cullen328 (talk) 03:39, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Definitely! Kudos for adding the NYT source. There's probably some interesting stuff that could be pulled from the two articles I added as well, but right now they're just there to support the existing statements. 28bytes (talk) 03:42, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
The funny thing is that I think I saw the episode that Greeley was discussing. My wife liked that show back then. I am surprised that there is so little information available about Stone. I will do some more searching. Cullen328 (talk) 04:20, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

my article

there are references at the bottom of my page. that is where all info has come from. can you help me wikify my article so it's not deleted. i am having a hard time becoming a part of this community and want to be. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonjacksonthethird (talkcontribs) 19:26, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

New Pages and New Users

I've recently been doing some thinking (and a great deal of consultation with Philippe and James at the WMF's community department) on how to keep new users around and participating, particularly in light of Sue's March update. One of the things we'd like to test is whether the reception they get when they make their first article is key. In a lot of cases, people don't stay around; their article is deleted and that's that. By the time any contact is made, in other words, it's often too late.

What we're thinking of doing is running a project to gather data on if this occurs, how often it occurs, and so on, and in the mean time try to save as many pages (and new contributors) as possible. Basically, involved users would go through the deletion logs and through Special:NewPages looking for new articles which are at risk of being deleted, but could have something made of them - in other words, non-notable pages that are potentially notable, or spammy pages that could be rewritten in more neutral language. This would be entirely based on the judgment of the user reviewing pages - no finnicky CSD standards. These pages would be incubated instead of deleted, and the creator contacted and shepherded through how to turn the article into something useful. If they respond and it goes well, we have a decent article and maybe a new long-term editor. If they don't respond, the draft can be deleted after a certain period of time.

I know this isn't necessarily your standard fare, but with your new pages work I thought it might be up your alley. If you're interested, read Wikipedia:Wiki Guides/New pages, sign up and get involved; questions can be dropped on the talkpage or directed at me. Thanks, Ironholds (talk) 21:11, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Sounds like an excellent idea, I will head over there now. 28bytes (talk) 21:21, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

For all the work youve done answering false positive reports. Ive been busy lately, but Im not planning to stop editing that page entirely. It is a bit frustrating though. Anyway, I thank you and all the others who've also been helping there. Soap 01:09, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
