Your recent edits

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 14:10, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Reference desks

You may be annoyed that there has been no answer to your "My Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 has an error!" question. But siting on the wikipedia reference desk posting stupid answers and advice to ask at Yahoo answers is not a welcome activity, and I'd be glad if you desisted. Line bundles and cohomology

Please don't put comments like "Please post some more info" into empty section headers. I created the section so that I could edit it alone, and so not encounter edit conflict when trying to save my post. I was writing quite a long post, and if I started to edit the whole page then someone would have changed something in another section before I'd finished and I wouldn't be able to save because the version I was working on wouldn't contain the comment posted whilst I was editing. So, I created an empty section so that I could edit it in peace without worrying about edit conflicts. When I came to save, there was an edit conflict: you'd written "Please post some more info". So I had to go back a page, copy and cut my post, go back to the main article, edit that, and then paste in my post. ~~ Dr Dec (Talk) ~~ 14:02, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Reference desk...

Re this: that type of warning is not particularly helpful nor useful when answers have already been given. As long as it's on a reference desk, there is no need to be anal and get it moved to another reference desk. One other thing: I notice you have made one constructive edit to the mainspace, and that was almost 9 months ago, on Thursday 11/12/08. What did I do wrong with installing MiszaBot III?Accdude92 (talk) (sign) 16:23, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

One aesthetic thing: the template should go at the top of your page. I've done it for you. You don't appear to have done anything else wrong. Be aware that the bot only runs once a day, so you should wait 24-36 hours from the time you first added the template. If still nothing happens, then it would be a good idea to ask Misza13 to help you. Xenon54 / talk / 16:30, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Is there anyway that I can use wikipedia markup to create a countdown to a specific date?Accdude92 (talk) (sign) 14:00, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

(Please don't use the template as a section header. It causes problems.) You can, but it's complicated. It looks like this (original by Tim Song, copied from helpdesk): {{#expr: trunc (({{#time:U|20090908072000}} - {{#time:U}}) div 86400)}} days {{#expr: trunc ((({{#time:U|20090908072000}} - {{#time:U}}) mod 86400) div 3600)}} hours {{#expr: trunc ((({{#time:U|20090908072000}} - {{#time:U}}) mod 3600) div 60)}} minutes {{#expr: ({{#time:U|20090908072000}} - {{#time:U}}) mod 60}} seconds. Currently it counts down to 00:00, 25/12/2009 (i.e. one minute after 23:59:59, 24/12/2009), but it can be changed to any date. Its output looks like this: -5555 days -17 hours -33 minutes -1 seconds. It can't update dynamically because that would require JavaScript (which isn't allowed here) so you have to refresh (F5) the page to update it. Xenon54 / talk / 14:18, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok, but what and how do I edit that?Accdude92 (talk) (sign) 14:23, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Change the date. I changed it above to count down to 07:20, 8/9/09. Then when you're done, put the code wherever you want the countdown to show up. Xenon54 / talk / 14:41, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi!

This is an interesting place. What do you suggest I do here? I was thinking of making a list of what constitutes a "town" and a "city" according to the laws of each state. How would I go about doing that? Doc Quintana (talk) 14:05, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I clicked on the random article thing before. How about this: I add it on as a "definitions" section in the article about towns? I was curious because I live in New Hampshire and here towns are legally different than cities, but in some places they aren't and some places it's a size/urban planning thing (here some of our towns are bigger than some of our cities). I've always been curious about it and i'd like to find out and share what I find. Doc Quintana (talk) 22:31, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Question On A Dispute

Hi there,

You're the only person I know so far, so I was wondering how to resolve a dispute if talking doesn't create a consensus? Going back and forth forever seems counterproductive. Doc Quintana (talk) 15:40, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

The dispute is here. Probably nothing, but i'd like to know the next step just in case. Something feels odd, there were a few reversions and i'd like to avoid rancor if we can't find common ground. Doc Quintana (talk) 17:43, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Am I allowed to make a sandbox for general chat? i am asking because I would rather ask, then get a warning template.Accdude92 (talk to me!) (sign) 19:59, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

The phrase "general chat" is not specific enough. Do you want to create a user subpage in which you can chat with other users about things not necessairily having to do with Wikipedia? As you have been told, Wikipedia is not Facebook. So that would be a "no", unless I don't understand your question correctly (which is entirely plausible at this time of day).
Also, please don't put {{helpme}} as the section title. Doing that breaks the ability to edit the section directly, meaning that any prospective answerer has to click on the main "edit this page" tab - and editing such a long page all at once can cause problems for those of us on older, slower, or non-Windows computers. {{helpme}}How do I know if an ip is a shared ip?Accdude92 (talk to me!) (sign) 16:27, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

In short, you can't.
There are tools on the net to help you try to determine who an IP address is registered to (Reverse DNS lookup), but the results are often inconclusive, as large ranges of addresses are frequently just assigned to a huge ISP, which in reality re-allocates addresses.
So many IP addresses, these days, are dynamic - ie your address changes when you reconnect.
That said, as you've probably seen, if we do identify addresses in a specific shared range (such as a school), then we mark the talk page with a template, for example Template:IPEDU.
Hope that helps a bit; if you have a specific case you wondered about, please ask again. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  16:37, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Templates and Established Editors

Whacking templates on established editors pages is a not a good idea. It tends to piss people off. If you have an issue with someone the best way is to raise the matter with them in a normal, conversational way rather than using boilerplate messages. You might wanna read about not templating the regulars. Crafty (talk) 19:59, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Let's keep this conversation here on your talkpage. :) Warning templates are best used on IP editors or new users who are clearly creating problems, like blatant vandalism or snarky personal attacks, copyright violations and the like. Until you really understand what's going on you might wanna lay off templating anyone. Crafty (talk) 20:05, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

By the way, if you want to chat better use IRC than talk page. You can use java if you don't have another client. -- Mentifisto 13:32, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

(e/c)First, make sure you meet all the technical requirements on this page. If you then click the link which says "Current version (0.9.2)", you should be able to download an executable file. When the download is complete, double-click the file to run it. However, this may all be for nought, since I believe you need the rollback right to use Huggle, which you currently don't appear to have. For example, if someone were to add the word ass to an article, a bot cannot interpret the context and may revert it as vandalism, even if it is an innocent reference to a donkey. That is a false positive, and can be reported to help the botmaster consider ways of refining the code. If too many false positives are triggered, the bot is usually deactivated until it can be made more reliable. AJCham 18:10, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Welcoming anon newbies

Hi, I note that you left a welcome at User talk:122.167.220.143 referring particularly to what they did to coordinate system. FYI, that was actually vandalism; they inserted a blank gallery in the middle of a list. - Fayenatic (talk) 20:07, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Are you sure?

Regarding this AIV report, please see my comment over at User talk:Master S P. Would you mind taking another look at the situation to see if your AIV report was actually appropriate? (I also left a message at User talk:Duncan.) Thanks, — Scientizzle 21:20, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

re User:Master S P, 4im warning and report to AIV

I would advise you that I have redacted your warning on the above editors talkpage, and removed the report to AIV. My view is that not only was the edit in good faith, but it was also technically correct. Irrespective of the accuracy, I would comment that WP:AGF requires us to consider whether it is possible that an edit was made in an attempt to improve the encyclopedia, to discuss the issue with the editor when uncertain, to only warn were there is an indication that discussion will not achieve understanding, and to issue the appropriate warning when required - in this circumstance the 4im was not the right template. I further note that you did not respond to comments questioning both the report and the warning, although you may not have been watching the pages. I realise that you are also working to the good of the project, so I hope that you will learn from this episode. LessHeard vanU (talk) 21:27, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Warning

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Wikipedia talk:Sandbox. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you.

Re this edit and this edit: You have been warned before that this link is inappropriate, except perhaps outside your userspace. Although you have not done it to an article yet, you know the link is inappropriate, and you're blatantly advertising the website. In a nutshell, you're spamming. I honestly think that you are not taking this seriously or don't understand the gravity of the situation. If you were taking this seriously and did understand, you would have stopped by now.
