Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: engage with audience

Dear WAM organizer,

I’m Erick, the coordinator of WAM 2017. Thanks for your effort and help at m:Wikipedia Asian Month 2017! Here are some more information about organizational matter of the event at a national level.

You are receiving this message because you have signed up as a organizer or in the list.

Timeline

The event has started and will end in the November 30th 23:59 (UTC). However, we are late for some matter. So we need your help:

  • Invite previous participants and your community members to join. We have a template you can use.
  • Translate Central Notice for your community (more instruction below) as well as sending a notice in village pump. Go public!
  • Become the jury member in a campaign on Fountain which is an amazing tool for you to supervise participants’ articles. If you don’t have the campaign set up, please contact us! And put a link to your community’s campaign page for participants’ navigation.
  • Organize a off-site editathon event. A coffee bar, internet and laptops. Though it’s optional. If you want to do that, please contact me.

In the following days, you should answer the questions from your community and supervise the submissions. Hope you have fun!

Prepare Central Notice

Central Notice shows a banner on the top of pages in your wiki project along the event timeframe. We will use this to engage with audience. Steps:

  1. Translate, change logo and link to event page. Find your project's Central Notice here. For example, we can change the banner for Chinese Wikipedia here.
  2. When you mark the 4 items (translation) as done. I'll enable the central notice in your language for this month.
Interesting articles

Have some interesting articles in your mind or from community? Drop us a line so that we can post that here to exchange the information to other communities.

Special Prize

You can find some special prizes in Event Partner page. They can be claimed by:

  • Write an article about Indigenous people in Taiwan at Wikipedia Asian Month (supported by Wikimedia Taiwan).
  • Write articles on monuments of Bhubaneswar (supported by Bhubaneswar Heritage Edit-a-thon).

The participants who joins for the special prize need to also report their conribution in the speical page. The link is shown in the Event Partner page.

Congratulations for winning the 2017 WikiCup

Wiki Tribble
~The Special Wikipedian Tribble Award~
Go forth and multiply, we need more pedians like you!
You're one of those editors who stand out above the fray. Being a mindful, considerate collaborator working to improve the project is a selfless task, especially considering some of the mine fields one has to navigate from time to time. Writing engaging prose is not a simple Tiny Tim Tiptoe Through the Tulips endeavor. Thank you Adityavagarwal for all you do and all you've done to help build a quality encyclopedia. Atsme📞📧 14:29, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

Actually, thank you instead, Atsme! I have had plenty of encouragement from editors like you, and got motivated to contribute more to wikipedia. Undoubtedly, wikipedia is a really different place with so many understanding people, that it is so cool to contribute on it. People like you make it so easy for new editors to learn the ropes really quickly! I hope I could become an even better contributor. Although it is late, happy halloween. Also, have a wonderful rest of the day!   Adityavagarwal (talk) 14:37, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

Thanks

for becoming a member of Editor of the Week. The EotW recognition is a weekly award, distributed on Sunday, that is intended to demonstrate appreciation of an editor's positive behaviors and collaborative spirit. It has basically become a one-editor project as far as the nomination, minor vetting, and distribution. So... if you encounter editors with sustained patterns of excellence, or you know some editor you have worked with that would appreciate a pat on the back, please feel free to nominate them! Encourage typically unnoticed editors by giving them their week in the sun!

To nominate an editor, add your nomination to the nominations page. It should be around 150–200 words, describing why the editor should be recognized, including specific tasks and behaviors that are beneficial to the encyclopedia and the community. Once nominated, absent any extenuating circumstances, the clerks (which at the moment is just me) for the Editor of the Week program will accept the nomination and place it in a queue. On Sunday evening, a clerk (me again) will present the Editor of the Week award to the editor at the top of the queue. On the following Tuesday an "Eddybanner" is also added to the recipient's page. Another thing I like to encourage is adding a personal thanks to the recipients talk page. Again, welcome aboard. ―Buster7  20:16, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? DYK for Turkestan red pika

On 29 November 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Turkestan red pika, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Turkestan red pika was at one time trapped for its fur? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Turkestan red pika. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Turkestan red pika), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
