coronado, ca

stop reverting my edit. i rephrased it to make it come from a neutral point of view. Also, I live in this town and you dont so I know whats going on here more than you do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.75.47.98 (talk) 13:05, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

You must add a reliable and verifiable source (from book, newspaper or magazine) to support your claim. The fact that you live there does not make you a reliable source per Wikipedia standards and will be removed. Alansohn (talk) 13:07, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Coronado's 4th of July Parade is a real treat for the entire family.

why dont you remove this line from the article as well?; as it is unsourced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.75.47.98 (talk) 13:34, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Category request for deletion

Hi. It's been a while. I've never encountered this on Wikipedia before, but I found a category (and henceforth its subcategories) that I would like to request for deletion. The parent category is Category:African American sportspeople and then all of its subcategories too. My reasons for this are basically similar in nature to the few who have already discussed it on the talk page. Do you share these views? If so, could you request these categories for deletion? I'm not sure of that process. Thanks. -Jrcla2 01:54, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Caprivi Conflict

No worries, thanks for your understanding. 62.72.110.11 (talk) 13:38, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Your (the IP's) edit was unconstructive. Not everything backed by sources is indeed true. The Caprivi conflict is over, and there is no independent state there. --Pgallert (talk) 14:01, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Just a quick hi to say that I'm delighted you're watching the Wildwoods article, as well. Although I'm a Montrealer, most of my family lives in Jersey. Growing up, it was like a second home to me. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 16:23, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Arcamax Publishing

Hey, I don't know of any other way to get a hold of you. You edited out some comments I made on arcamax's entry. Now, I realize that they may have perhaps been a bit harsh. However, if you google the words spam and arcamax, you will see that the company does indeed deceive people into "subscribing" to their "newsletter". Seriously, I receive about four unsolicited emails a day from them. And I haven't been able to block them or even contact someone who would remove me from their "mailings". If you do not inform the public of their "business" practices, I will be forced to change the entry again. This time with ample citations. Contact me at shumich@lycoming.edu to let me know what you think about this "nonconstructive" company that harasses folk like myself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shumich (talkcontribs)

On Wikipedia, our job is to provide material backed by reliable and verifiable sources. I don't doubt that Arcamax Publishing may well be sending spam to you, but this edit, where it is described as "Arcamax spam is worse than a bad case of the crabs." is pure opinion. If you can that as a quote from a newspaper or magazine it needs to be reliably sourced, but without that the edit was vandalism and was reverted. Alansohn (talk) 13:12, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Manhattan GA Sweeps: On Hold

I have reviewed Manhattan for GA Sweeps to determine if it still qualifies as a Good Article. In reviewing the article I have found several issues, which I have detailed here. Since you are a main contributor of the article (determined based on this tool), I figured you would be interested in contributing to further improve the article. Please comment there to help the article maintain its GA status. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 19:38, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

The "Otto Test"

It was obvious from the discussion here that you (who I don't recall interacting with before) and this Otto guy (and I don't know him either) have some history together. Being a bit curious I delved through some old CfD stuff and boy was I richly rewarded. In particular the whole business with Category:LGBT-related_television_episodes was milk-out-of-my-nose funny. I haven't laughed so hard in weeks. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Haukur (talk) 00:48, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks?!? I was dragged into the world of CfD after a category I had been involved with was proposed for deletion. One day I hope to inject a rather small does of consistency in the way rules are applied. Thanks for your note and for the small dose of enjoyment that you may have inadvertently received. Thank You

Thank you very much for creating Ernest May (historian). As a historian by training who works in foreign policy, I have been greatly influenced by May's work and have long wished to get around to creating an Ernest May article. Thank you for finally doing it. --Xtreambar (talk) 15:51, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I am deeply touched by your kind words. As a rather unprofessional (or is it nonprofessional) historian, I keep an eye on the obituary pages and the Deaths in 2009 article to see if there are holes for people who should have articles. While I was only vaguely familiar with May's works before his death, the ample material about May and his rather interesting background led me to create the article. Please update and expand, as I am sure is necessary. Your note was very much appreciated. Alansohn (talk) 16:00, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Kate Claxton

Very nice work you did to the article Kate Claxton. The reference you gave: Notable American Women I have seen before and is more desirable than mine which is from the print version. Therefore, I intend to remove my version but the question I have is should we include the person, Pat M. Ryan, credited at the end of the article for the contribution? Further, do you know if this circumstance is addressed by Wikipedia anywhere? Thanks again. Daytrivia (talk) 19:57, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

I did notice that the title of the source was the same, but the presence of a different author led me to question if we might well be dealing with two different editions of the same book. I don't know if there is a policy to address this situation, and what should be done regarding Ryan. Alansohn (talk) 20:04, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Unreferenced Character Bios (BlazBlue)

I will delete the characters section (...I will leave the names up) unless anyone can tell me EXACTLY where this information is coming from. (especially Ragna the Bloodege's). This is not a threat or vandelism, it is to further Wikipedia's honesty. It is your own fault if taken as a threat.Zekami (talk) 17:29, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

I know nothing about the characters, but I do know that there are problems with multiple edits in succession removeing content from articles. Please discuss at the article's talk page and make sure to use an edit summary in all of your edits, being extremely careful to do so when you are removing content. Check on the WP:HUGGLE pages for Mac compatability. Wikipedia:Huggle/Wine lays out the details for how to run on non-Windows systems. Alansohn (talk) 18:45, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
I believe that the DOS thing is a message hardcoded into Windows executables in the assumption that any OS other than Windows must be DOS. It worked all right throughout all of the 90s. In case that helps. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 21:08, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
I had the same thought that the .exe assumed that any non-Windows environment must be DOS, regardless of what it really was. The Huggle info on non-Windows systems should help here. Alansohn (talk) 21:12, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Re: 50 DYK

Thank you! Of all the things to do at Wikipedia, writing new articles is what I enjoy most, and I truly appreciate the personal touch in your message. Best, –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 19:37, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

If an article is kept based on my vote at AfD, we have only maintained the status quo. If I delete vandalism, I have made Wikipedia less bad. If I create an article, certainly one that is DYK-eligible, I have made Wikipedia a far better encyclopedia. I've been shooting for an average of one DYK article per day, and nothing makes me happier than to be able to expand or create a new article to fill in a hole that existed in Wikipedia. You're most welcome for the personal touch, and I sincerely hope that you will keep up the excellent articles you've been creating so far. Alansohn (talk) 20:22, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the recognition from a fellow DYKer. I sometimes feel like an ambulance chaser of some kind, or perhaps a hearse chaser, but I do check the obituary pages and recent deaths and see if there is information available to create an interesting article. An obituary usually provides an excellent overview of the individual's life that serves as a springboard to locate additional material to create decent articles. I recently made changes to two articles. Ritchie Neville and Emily Scott. The insertion of text from IP address 114.73.156.242 on 28th June 2009 is not the absolute facts. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arlene White Lawrence

Hi Alansohn, I saw your and Uncle G's comments on this AfD and was wondering about the exact status of obituaries. I couldn't find anything on Wikipedia:Notability (people) and would appreciate any direction you could give. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 19:06, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure that there is anything anywhere that states explicitly that an obituary confers notability. But the statement at Wikipedia:Notability (people) defining notability as coverage "significant, interesting, or unusual enough to deserve attention or to be recorded" is met by an obituary that covers the individual and their life, with the publication deeming the individual as worthy of attention. Alansohn (talk) 19:10, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

I tried my best to find sources, and this obit in The Washington Post was the source for the dates used for Love of Life. This would not be the first time that one source (or other material) contradicts another, and I will research further. For now, I think I have to stick with the published obit over a sound bite. Hi Alansohn

I edited the Michael Bay article earlier today, and accidentally ended up redoing the edit I made after you deleted it. Anyway, I added a message on the history page stating that it was in error, but wanted to let you know here, as well. Sorry for the trouble...was having a bad day and took a odd way blowing off some steam. Thanks for the notices and keep up the good work!

Still Not a Michael Bay Fan,

That One Guy From 06/23/2009

New user. Not sure how to use this particular function, so I apologize if this is in the wrong place. This is regarding the Allison Quets entry. I have twice editing the entry requesting removal based on fairness and compassion to the children. I am not vandalizing but requesting a removal, so the children are protected and do not have to see these things when they grow. Barring removal of the entry, what about starting one for Kevin and Denise Needham, the couple who stalked Quets when she was ill and later found a corrupt attorney to help them kidnap the twins. If you look at the documents on the Quets site and court records, legal documents, it is clear the Needhams were filing to adopt the children (intent to adopt) without Allison even knowing.

The entry truly needs to come down, be substantiate, or be balanced with starting an entry on the actions and history of the Needhams. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.122.137.130 (talk) 21:07, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Postlethwaite & Netterville

The article for Postlethwaite & Netterville is largely written as an advertising piece, and not as a neutral and objective article per the WP:NPOV standard. There are also no sources, per WP:RS and WP:V that demonstrate that the company meets the Wikipedia standard for notability. I have no doubt that the company exists, but the question of why the company should have an article needs to be answered. Alansohn (talk) 20:57, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

HOA definitions

Alansohn, I saw your comments regarding recent edits to the page. An article is not "biased" when providing multiple viewpoints. If an earlier author put "positive" comments supporting a "pro-HOA" position and you permit only those comments to remain then you are imposing bias on the article. A number of the statements in the definition/discussion were simply downright incorrect and misleading. It's also not clear why you would want to conceal the remarks that were made. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.97.13.6 (talk) 06:02, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Alansohn, about the Ninoy Aquino International Airport page, I deleted the 2006-2007 passenger volume sentence because of redundancy. As you can somewhere in the middle of that page, there is already a table reserved for passenger volume from 2003-2008. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Markxvi (talkcontribs) 17:46, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

X-Y relations commenting on !votes moratorium.

I'd like to propose a voluntary moratorium on commenting on others people's !votes in bilateral relations AfDs. At this point, I don't think there's anything to be gained from such comments--obviously no one is convincing anyone--meanwhile, the acrimony rises and uninvolved editors are discouraged from weighing in. See this masterpiece for a prime example. So how about we just don't comment on each others' votes? This moratorium would not cover general comments, i.e. those which aren't indented under and/or in response to a specific !vote (e.g. [1]), but these should be kept to an absolute minimum. I intend invite all of the "usual suspects" to join this moratorium. I've missed someone, please invite them. Please discuss, and ideally note whether you intend to abide by this here. Thanks. Academies at Englewood

I'm trying to figure out why this help desk question was asked. It seems to have something to do with a move which was immediately followed by this edit. An IP restored approximately the same amount of content that was removed earlier (after improvements) and you essentially reverted that action. — Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:52, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Vchimpanzee, there had been an edit war (of a kind) as to whether Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies at Englewood should be two separate articles or if they should both be covered within a single Dwight Morrow article. Even within Wikipedia attribution is required, and this issue often arises when an article is split, as the material moved from article A to article B has no history to demonstrate its provenance. For several weeks, the articles were being shifted back and forth, renamed, split, merged and material was removed and reinserted. While this was happening, copyright issues (or the appearance thereof) may have been created. That's my understanding of what happened. The battle there was so hot and heavy that I had basically stepped away, assuming that the pieces could be picked up later; I will take a look at the articles in question when I have a chance to do so. Alansohn (talk) 22:13, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't know where to find a description of what the person was asking about.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:15, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Ludicrous?

I saw your description of my edit as ludicrous. I'm going to put aside that you are violating the rules, insulting me, not discussing, not showing good faith, and that you gave you no justification, rational or irrational, for your revert. Your revert amounts to inventing your own rules. So let me tell you a few things about musicians, particularly jazz musicians. They lead peripatetic lives. Their income relies on performing. Most jazz musicians live in New York City because it has many if not the most jazz clubs and venues. When they are not in New York, they are travelling all over the world. So there's no point in saying "he lives in" or "based in". We already have birth place in the infobox. Why do you need more than that? Are you helping a stalker? Second, because they are usually on the road, it's impossible to say where they are right now. Third, what's the point of knowing that? Fourth, it's no one's business. You don't believe in privacy? OK, well, that's a sign of the times, I guess. The generations that grew up with the internet seem not to appreciate it. It used to be a self-evident truth that privacy was a good thing. It used to be a rule at Wikipedia that we err on the side of privacy. In the future, explain your edits and avoid the insults, treat people with respect—editors and subjects of articles. In the future, click on my name so you can learn something about the subject and so you can see that I know what I'm doing.
Vmavanti (talk) 00:55, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Vmavanti, people live somewhere; that's where they're from, especially when that information is backed by reliable and verifiable sources about the individual and where they live. Your pathetic excuse for deletion of sourced content was that listing his residence was an "invasion of privacy", which is based on your own manufactured ideas. Your nonsense about "helping a stalker" is belied by the fact that the sources are public and readily available to anyone, anywhere. I encourage you to find anybody to go along with you and seek to change consensus that people can only be identified by their birthplace. Your position here is patently ludicrous. Alansohn (talk) 01:06, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
You continue to break the rules and express yourself in an extremely offensive way. I'm going to tell an admin that you are obsessed with finding the location of these black jazz musicians. What your further plans are I don't know, but it certainly is weird. Birthplace in the infobox is enough. It's enough for everyone else. Why not you? The only other thing I can think of, which I have also encountered here, is you know this person or perhaps he is from your hometown and you are doing some boostering for your hometown. That's a generous view. Either way, stop being obnoxious and leave these people alone. If you are new, you have a lot to learn bout how to be a decent editor on Wikipedia.
Vmavanti (talk) 01:17, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
Vmavanti, please do. Please go and "tell an admin" that I am "obsessed with finding the location of these black jazz musicians", which I am doing as part of a process that I call "finding reliable and verifiable sources about their place of residence". You have a lot to learn about how Wikipedia works. Alansohn (talk) 02:09, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Jamaica is a middle-class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is mainly composed of a large commercial and retail area, though part of the neighborhood is also residential. Jamaica is home to large African American and Caribbean populations. Jamaica is bordered by Hollis to the east; St. Albans, Springfield Gardens, Rochdale Village to the southeast; South Jamaica to the south; Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park to the west; Briarwood to the northwest; and Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica Hills, and Jamaica Estates to the north. WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  •   Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  •   Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  •   Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  •   The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  •   Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  •   Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  •   Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  •   Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). Garden State Plaza

Alan, apart from the issue of citation styles, you have removed valid citations from the article, and replaced them with ones that are are not in any way superior. For example, in this revert of yours, among the things you did was to remove this quite valid NorthJersey.com citation, and replace it with this signup pages to Newspapers.com, which does not bear the same information. Can you please tell me why you keep doing this?

Second, with regard to WP:CITEVAR, that policy states change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change. Isn't this exactly what you have done? There are cite templates all over that article, you persistently remove them, and without discussion. Why is this? Do you believe there is an "established" citation style in the article? If so, what is it? What is your rationale for this? Nightscream (talk) 05:10, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Nightscream is correct. What you're doing is the violation of CITEVAR. Bringing a single ref inline with the rest of the article's established citation style is not a violation of CITEVAR, but changing the entire citation style, as you have done, is. And frankly, taking refs that are already rendered with templates out of them is a straight-up crappy CITEVAR violation. Knock it off, and respect the established citation style of the article, or I'm bringing you to ANI. oknazevad (talk) 13:48, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Nightscream and Oknazevad, as one of the earliest contributors to the article for Garden State Plaza some 15 years ago, I followed and helped to continue to establish the consistent citation style used in the article. Over the subsequent years, numerous editors have made additions that conflict with this consistent citation style, and other editors have made edits that consist entirely of changes to this consistent citation style, as seen in this edit. Where I have made changes, they have been as part of comprehensive edits to the article and have either been to restore the status quo ante as the reference had been inserted or to replace a non-functional source with one that works. I had checked the source before I made this edit that Nightscream questioned at which point the Internet Archive link was not working, which is the only reason I replaced it.
Changing citation styles is not only purposeless, it conflicts with policy, which is clear that no one citation style is "better" than another. Alansohn (talk) 13:57, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Regarding the Internet Archive not working, replacing it with a signup page at Newspapers.com is not appropriate.
The fact that you edited the article years ago does not mean that there is an "established" citation style in the article, in light of the fact that the article is filled with both templated citations and non-templated citations. You simply took a citation out of a template, not any of the others in the article, an act for which there is no apparent purpose or reason.
Moreover, it has been my observation that wikification tends to favor placing bare citations into templates, and not the other way around. I have never observed bare citations referred to as a "style".
You have two editors now who have argued against your edits, and it seems that you are reverting against both of them, and in the middle of an ongoing discussion. Do you intend to continue reverting if I restore the cites in question? Or do you prefer to continue this discussion with more editors participating? Nightscream (talk) 16:36, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Nightscream, if I have "removed" sources, it is because the exiting references were non-functional or did not cover the material they claimed to be sourcing. If an edit I made inadvertently removed a source, the rather simple solutions are to let me know or to reinsert the source.
, on the other hand, if you're citing this malicious edit, which removed extensive sourced content, as an example of a "an ongoing discussion", there is something completely f'ed up here, as that edit was the very definition of WP:POINT. Alansohn (talk) 17:17, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
I am not. I provided the diff of the edit I was citing above. The citation in question indeed supported that material.
As I stated above, that webpage works perfectly fine, whereas the Newspapers.com signup page you replaced it with does not. Are you going to fix that? Do you intend to continue reverting against the two editors now who have opposed your edits? Nightscream (talk) 20:07, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Nightscream, I confirmed that the Internet Archive version of the link is working and reinserted the reference in the format in which it was added to the article, with the replacement of the archived version of the link for the original link, which is no longer functioning. Again, if you believe that this malicious edit, which removed extensive sourced content, is part of "an ongoing discussion", there is something seriously wrong here. Alansohn (talk) 20:33, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

NOTEE: The above discussion has been continued on the Garden State Plaza talk page. Nightscream (talk) 02:02, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Eatontown edits

Hi Alan, thanks for reviewing my edits to the Eatontown page. Concerning the Mill Pond, I have no idea where this is and I've lived in Eatontown since 1987. I am not able to access the source that you reference from the Asbury Park Press. Can you send me the info regarding Mill Pond.? I'm at sfratini@hotmail.com. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sfratini33 (talkcontribs) 17:31, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

  • Sfratini33, if this makes no sense, I'll drilldown further and share an image of the article. I searched as hard as I could to find a reliable and verifiable source that mention the mill being in Wampum Memorial Park, but I found nothing. Alansohn (talk) 17:35, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Alan, I appreciate your help. It may be that someone just decided to make a general reference to the "mill pond" that Thomas Eaton originally used for his mill, but I'm almost certain this is now Wampum Lake Park. If you go to Google maps, and go to Wampum Lake, you'll see where the lake is constricted and the flows into Wampum Brook. That constriction is in fact the small water fall. You can even see it if you go to street level view. I've been there many times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sfratini33 (talkcontribs) 17:39, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

  • Sfratini33, This source from a book dated in 2013 connects Eaton and what was known as Mill Brook to the Wampum Brook, but it doesn't say that the 1670 grist mill was in the present-day park. It's just weird to be unable to find any source that ties the pivotal 1670 founding event to Wampum Lake Park in a reliable and verifiable reference. Alansohn (talk) 17:53, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Alan, The problem is that "Mill Pond" will confuse people since this is not an existing term used in the town or or the map. There is but one waterfall in Eatontown. I will send an email to the Eatontown Historic Society and see if they can provide some verification. Maybe they can also post something on their web page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sfratini33 (talkcontribs) 17:59, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Alan, excellent, thanks for the help. FYI ... I also found an old map of the area on Page 18 of the book I referenced. The "Mill Pond" is in exactly the same place as Wampum Lake. So, no doubt that the two are one and the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sfratini33 (talkcontribs) 18:56, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:John F. Kenendy High School (Paterson, New Jersey) alumni

A tag has been placed on Category:John F. Kenendy High School (Paterson, New Jersey) alumni requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Talk! 14:52, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

  • Liz, there are other (and better) reasons to delete, but this category isn't seven days old. It was created yesterday. I won't object, but it concerns me that other day-old categories are being tagged for deletion prematurely. Alansohn (talk) 01:29, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

Your entries to the WS article were bogus. Your edits here got you nearly blocked at ANI. This edit[3] is ridiculous too coming from an experienced editor. One time no, bs again. I haven't and will not study all your edits but it is obvious when there is a pattern of deception in an editor's work here....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 23:49, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Idea for education templates: consolidate those for lower population counties

Something that occurred to me is that community colleges and public library systems should be on countywide education templates.

For lower population counties I've tried combining the high school and school district templates into a single template: See Template:Education in Cape May County, New Jersey (as Cape May County only has five public high schools and one private high school with articles and the reader can pick those out: one can also make nested templates showing high schools within the template)

For larger population counties (maybe 10 or 15 or more high schools?) one can have education in ... templates (school districts + community colleges) and have high schools be an offshoot with their own templates (I'm wondering about Camden, Mercer, and some of the north Jersey counties could have separated templates?). WhisperToMe (talk) 14:05, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

  • WhisperToMe, after I saw your message, I was looking at the Bergen County template, which has 68 public and private high schools, and that can certainly stand on its own. Smaller / more rural counties can make do with consolidated templates. The current templates probably started under the assumption that every county should have a high school template and a separate school district template, but those counties might be better served with a combined template that also includes community colleges, or perhaps library systems.

Collingswood and Jim Maley

Hello, I'm Western civilization. I noticed that in this edit to Collingswood, NJ, you removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Western civilization (talkcontribs) 14:46, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Western civilization, I have left edit summaries to explain my edits. In this edit yesterday, I left the edit summary "remove details of statements and opinions by mayor; this is an article about Collingswood, not about Jim Maley"; In this edit today, I stated "remove irrelevant and undue comments by mayor in an article that's about the borough, not about Jim Maley". By contrast, your edits have claimed that you were "undoing vandalism to properly sourced additions to the page" and that "Vandalism won't be tolerated". I think it's you who might want to read these edit summaries and be much more careful about claims of vandalism. Alansohn (talk) 14:54, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  •   The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  •   Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  •   Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  •   Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  •   Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  •   Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  •   Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Proposed deletion of Escalante Elementary School

The article Escalante Elementary School has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Elementary schools are typically not notable and I don't see what makes this an exception

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Montague Township school docs

Montague Township School District had quite a turbulent history in the 2010s related to the cancellation of its send/receive with Port Jervis School District (switched to High Point Regional High School) and then attempts to get that back.

Sadly it seems they deleted a bunch of primary source documents on their official site. Happily I found some in Google cache and others in Document Cloud, but it might be good to save copies to your HD.

WhisperToMe (talk) 14:19, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

  • WhisperToMe, there are districts that have had sending relationships for several decades that have lasted forever without a murmur, and then you have districts like Montague Township (or Englewood / Englewood Cliffs) which are in constant turmoil. Thanks for the documents. Alansohn (talk) 14:59, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
You're welcome! I also found the Sending/Receiving Petition from Montague Township so I think that should be all the documents...? WhisperToMe (talk) 15:08, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Diminishing SHP alumni

Not sure why you are so adamant about deleting a Seton Hall Prep alumni that won the 2020 "Emerging Writer's Award. I taught Chris Cooper at SHP in 2005, I was the honors English teacher Antonio Defiore, and any accomplished writer should be acknowledged. Although I can't find an article where he talks about "high school," his linkedin profile clearly shows he attended Seton Hall Prep and graduated in 2006.

Here is the source: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christopherjcooper87/

I don't think a link to his professional linkedin profile should need to be included because you're eager to discredit this writer. There are other "alumni" that do not have any verifiable links to them attending SHP. If you want to go tit for tat, that's fine, I'll edit this page every single day.Carterk99 (talk) 21:15, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Carterk99, one of the consistent guidelines for adding notables to such lists is that each entry should have a Wikipedia article *AND* a reliable / verifiable source establishing a connection to the school (or place). Seton Hall Prep has about 200 or so graduates each year for which it is possible to verify that they attended the school, but we don't list every alumnus. The ones we list are those with both Wikipedia articles that establish notability and sources that establish attendance at Seton Hall Prep. Chris Cooper doesn't yet meet that standard and that's why he has been removed, just as his entry was removed (by another user) from Chris Cooper (disambiguation). Alansohn (talk) 21:58, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

There are several people under “seton hall prep” alumni that have a Wikipedia page yet don’t provide corroboration they attended seton hall prep. I guess we should also remove them? Will do. Carterk99 (talk) 22:19, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

May 2021

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on List of Seton Hall Preparatory School alumni. This means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be although other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. - - mathmitch7 (talk/contribs) 21:47, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

  • mathmitch7, you're kidding. An editor with a clear conflict of interest is repeatedly adding a non-notable entry without a source, but I'm engaging in an edit war? Alansohn (talk) 02:06, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
    • I agree that the behavior on their part is inappropriate, and have left a similar message on their talk page (and a notice about the apparent COI). I'm mostly just trying to point out that this needs to be actually addressed (ideally on the article talk page), not via continuous reverting, and not via back-and-forths in edit logs. I'm not trying to reprimand you specifically, just to point out that there are many ways to resolve what's going on. - - mathmitch7 (talk/contribs) 12:33, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
      • Also I am aware that reverting vandalism is not the same as edit warring. The problem is that I think the other editor involved does not understand that their actions amount to vandalism. - - mathmitch7 (talk/contribs) 12:36, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Wait I didn't notice the conversation on your talk page above before posting this notice. Agreed, you can ignore this; I think you're handling it fine. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. - - mathmitch7 (talk/contribs) 12:41, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

May 2021: Immaculate Heart

Hi, I was just wondering how an award given to a school 24 years ago is relevant now? ("For the 1996–97 school year, Immaculate Heart Academy was recognized ...") We are all familiar with the ways a school can be radically changed when the top people are changed, either for the better or for the worse. I find that the article was trying to promote the school by emphasizing outdated accomplishments ad nauseum (without mentioning academic programs). What's your interpretation?--Quisqualis (talk) 16:22, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

It's not like the Nobel Prize, as a person is not an institution. It's more like the Nobel Peace Prize, which basically says, "we think you are really cool right now. Look at Obama. Or some of the despots who have received it. They were not devoted to peace following the award. However, I am only speculating, as are you. Tell me what you think.--Quisqualis (talk) 16:42, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Quisqualis, the Nobel Peace Prize is not encyclopedic? Can you back up the claim that it means "we think you are really cool right now" and can thus be ignored? Do you have sources to back up your position? Alansohn (talk) 16:50, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
I'd like to see your sources as well. We are both speculating. As for "the Nobel Peace Prize is not encyclopedic", you are engaging in some tenuous synthesis there. Are you a lawyer, or just a northern New Jerseyan? WP is beset with cleverly-written heavy promotion emanating from the NYC and northern NJ region. The creators of such promotion all act like lawyers, going head to head with other Wikipedians in order to prevail, ignoring the goals of the project. I am not going to deal with you on your level, sorry. Please stick to the facts and try to discuss this without a winner-takes-all attitude.--Quisqualis (talk) 17:01, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Quisqualis, I responded to your statements as best as I can take them. YOU have insisted that the Blue Ribbon Award should be ignored after some period of time. YOU were the one who said that It's more like the Nobel Peace Prize, which basically says, "we think you are really cool right now." YOU have offered nothing to back up any of your claims. YOU are the one engaging in attacks in violation of WP:NPA. I will not tolerate further personal attacks about who I am or where I'm from. I am not going to deal with you on your level, sorry. Without an apology on your part for the attack, this is the end of this discussion here. Alansohn (talk) 17:16, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Articles about racial segregation and desegregation in NJ schools

Do you have an account on JStor or are you able to get on the Wikipedia Library? I found articles about racial segregation and desegregation in NJ schools (northern Jersey by 1948 pretty much had integrated schools but south and central Jersey still had segregation) WhisperToMe (talk) 22:01, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

WhisperToMe, I've been catching upon your edits and looking at a of the school districts that had segregated educational systems into the late 1940s. I have the JStor link up in one of my tabs and I have to make sure that I do have access through the Wikipedia Library. These are truly meaningful additions. Alansohn (talk) 22:25, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Don Savage

On 26 May 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Don Savage, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that despite growing up "no more than a bus ride away from Yankee Stadium", Don Savage had never been to the team's home field before he made the 1944 New York Yankees roster? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Don Savage. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Don Savage), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Edited quotation in Vera Mae Green

Hello, Alansohn. Could you tell me why did you change "less than one-hundred" to "fewer than 100" in the article Vera Mae Green? According to MOS:Principle of minimal change, "Quotations must be verifiably attributed, and the wording of the quoted text should be faithfully reproduced."

If you have access to JSTOR and it's the original quotation, then I have no objection. Otherwise, please return the original wording or use square brackets.--Russian Rocky (talk) 17:58, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

UPDATE: I've rephrased the sentence in question. Feel free to check it out. Thanks in advance.--Russian Rocky (talk) 18:59, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Rahway page

Hi Alan - do you think I would be ok removing the header "this looks like an ad" on the Rahway New Jersey page? I feel it should probably be removed but wanted to get someone else's view. Thanks in advance Bhdshoes2 (talk) 16:57, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

I don't see promo content on the page. Bhdshoes2 (talk) 22:52, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

  • A few thoughts, Bhdshoes2 (with apologies to Alansohn for appropriating this talk page--I'm happy to copy this and move it, should that be the best course). First, it's clear you've contributed a lot of good content; I especially liked the section on artists who painted on the Rahway River. But, though I am not interested in sifting through a lot of previous edits, I've found enough that do have issues with promotional tone, and am surprised that you're not aware of this. That alone makes me concerned about some form of COI. If you'd like, I can pull up the diffs, but I've already edited a few examples, so it shouldn't be difficult to discuss those. Apologies from shifting from my usual 2601. Thanks, 73.186.215.222 (talk) 23:14, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

At this point, to me, the "this reads like promo" sogn on the Rahway page just looks like vandalism. There is nothing on there that reads like promo. I feel like you purged it all out already so sign should n come down. I did change "clubs" to "community orgs" though.

  • Perhaps it can be removed, though I'd suggest it be done by someone else. This isn't the place to work it out, but as I noted in an edit summary, I don't think the garden club or friends of the library are appropriate to include in a Wikipedia article. That you're inclined to boosterism on behalf of NJ cities is evident; referring to the advert template as vandalism is a misstep. 73.186.215.222 (talk) 03:21, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
    • On second thought, I really hadn't looked at the lede until now. I'd suggest a consensus on whether it's appropriate for the second and third sentences of a Wikipedia article to be "Rahway was named the 2020 "Great Downtown" designee on the APA's list of "Great Places in New Jersey."[18] Rahway was also named the #2 Best Small Town Arts Scene in the country by USA Today in 2021.[19]" That really has advert written all over it. The first claim is based on a dubious WP:RELIABLE; the second looks more solid, but is rather glaring in the intro. Bhdshoes2, I find it troubling that an experienced editor doesn't notice or acknowledge this area of concern. At this point, I'd welcome Alansohn's input, and that of other experienced editors. I'm happy to welcome divergent opinions. 2601:188:180:B8E0:4B7:A2AA:F35E:21A8 (talk) 19:33, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

Hmm. I mean, to me, there should indeed be explanatory notes of significance in the lede like "named the best" this or that if it is a significant publication. It gives facts of significance. I also feel adding local organizations of longstanding does belong in an encyclopedia entry on a place. Is there a way to copy and paste this whole discussion to the Rahway talk page? If you know how, feel free! Not sure Alan is even seeing this. I put it on his page bc he is a Jersey guy. Bhdshoes2 (talk) 14:40, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

    • 73.186.215.222 / 2601:188:180:B8E0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 and Bhdshoes2, I'm sorry that I hadn't been able to respond. I appreciate your respective positions, but I agree that the Rahway talk page is the best place for this discussion. While I agree that advertising tags are often unhelpful, there may well be legitimate issues with some of the content that's been added. As I'm sure that we would all agree that 98-99.9% of the article is not even borderline promotional, let's raise the issues at the talk page, discuss them dispassionately and reach consensus on them one at a time and update the article accordingly. Alansohn (talk) 15:38, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

All Souls Hospital

Hello, I recently created a draft for All Souls Hospital, a large historic hospital in Morristown which was closed a few years ago by Atlantic Health. Any help would be appreciated, or let others who may be interested know too. I think it would make a great DYK. Thank you, Thriley (talk) 17:34, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Thriley, you have everything you need to make this a full-fledged article and a good candidate for DYK! Most editors start with the article and scramble to find the sources. You've found great sources to flesh this out and I'm sure that there's more out there. Alansohn (talk) 19:02, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

‎Freeholdman12's drive to change "Transportation" to "Infrastructure"

I see his point, but he seems to be focused solely on adding the health care system. However, according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_infrastructure , he should also add information on each town's financial system, the education system, the system of government, law enforcement, and emergency services. Most of these articles already have such information in separate sections, so if is drive is truly to create informative hard and soft infrastructure sections (instead of just focusing on health care), he should try to merge them in. Otherwise, perhaps he should back off. I'm bringing this to your attention as the most-involved editor of NJ municipality articles - perhaps a discussion among other editors is needed. Famartin (talk) 09:48, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Famartin, it would seem that the relevant guideline that would be more relevant here would be WP:USCITY, which does recommend including healthcare and transportation in an infrastructure section. It's not a policy or a requirement, but it does offer some guidance for editors. I'm not sure that Soft infrastructure does the same. The best place to discuss this more broadly would be at WT:NJ, where could get greater participation, I hope. Alansohn (talk) 11:55, 30 August 2021 (UTC)
    • Thanks for bringing that to my attention. As a more casual editor, I'm not always aware of the many policies and guidelines, so it was enlightening, if further confusing. I've brought this for discussion on that talk page. Famartin (talk) 01:16, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants,   The Rambling Man and   Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being   Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are   Gog the Mild,   Lee Vilenski,   BennyOnTheLoose,   Amakuru and   Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles.   Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Guild of Copy Editors September 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

2020 Census statistics in New Jersey

Hello Alansohn, hope you are doing well. I was getting ready to contact you in short order regarding 2020 detailed Census statistical updates for New Jersey's 21 counties, going alphabetically with just two more counties left, (just finished Union County, only Warren County remains) - but in the meantime, looks like we stumbled over each other at the Union County page, prompting my correspondence with you slightly prematurely relative to my expectation in time.

First of all, we both know very well after doing this for a long time that it would be an editor's burden to gain consensus to retain material on a page rather than to remove obsolete material. I believe it's safe to say that most editors would consider it a non-starter to include sorely obsolete detailed 2000 statistics in the year 2021 (and now nearly 2022).

What I was hoping you were indeed planning to do however (and was actually going to ask you soon, as mentioned above) would be to perform once again the same magic now for 2020 detailed stats that you did a decade ago when you developed the 2010 auto-template of detailed demographic statistics for the 2010 census. Much more detailed info is now readily available, including for same-sex couples, foreign-born residents, etc. Best, Castncoot (talk) 01:51, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

  • Castncoot, I am still working myself -- and hoping to work with others -- to develop a systematic process to gather data from the 2020 census corresponding to the data available for 2010 and 2000, and to allow this data to be added to articles for counties and municipalities. I still don't know what should be done with 2000 data and I have arguments both for and against retention of the information, though I think that there is a strong argument that a string of data from three censuses provides context as to changes and trends in a county or municipality. But until we have 2020 data in the articles, it seems premature to be removing the only other contextual information we have and leaving only 2010 census data present. Alansohn (talk) 02:24, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
    • The 2020 data is available now, notwithstanding the delay induced by Covid. I'm happy to help you procure the 2020 data systematically if you need my help with that particular task Alansohn, but I really feel that this is a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth and truthfully, the project would be best served by you taking individual control of that process at this time. In fact, that's precisely why I created a shell section for 2020 on each county page, before reaching out to you about taking over from that point. The only significant contextual data to be gained from 2020 at this time any longer is the total population of each jurisdiction at Census 2000 (please keep in mind that byte space is valuable real estate for each article), and I have specifically continued to retain that data in the lead section. Castncoot (talk) 02:45, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Moorestown, New Jersey, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Respiratory distress syndrome.

WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is   The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

  1.   The Rambling Man (submissions) with 5072 points
  2.   Lee Vilenski (submissions) with 3276 points
  3.   Amakuru (submissions) with 3197 points
  4.   Epicgenius (submissions) with 1611 points
  5.   Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1571 points
  6.   BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 1420 points
  7.   Hog Farm (submissions) with 1043 points
  8.   Bloom6132 (submissions) with 528 points

All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

If you have views on whether the rules or scoring need adjustment for next year's contest, please comment on the WikiCup talk page. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2022 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! DYK for Carmine Savino

On 1 December 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Carmine Savino, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1958, New Jersey assemblyman Carmine Savino proposed cutting property taxes in half by imposing a three-percent state sales tax that would be used to cover public school costs? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Carmine Savino. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Carmine Savino), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

December 2021 GOCE Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Matt Kantor Notability

I was looking through the edits of [Hills Regional High School], and saw that you removed Matt Kantor from notable alumni under the grounds "No wikipedia article/ no reputable news sources providing connections", and was just wondering if This Was enough of an article to make it notable? Sorry I'm just new to wikipedia 65.51.78.195 (talk) 15:20, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2022 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2022 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. Any questions on the rules or on anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:36, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
