WikiCup 2014 April newsletter
Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar (submissions) and Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.
192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! COI Help
Hi Another Believer. I have a PR background and routinely create GA company articles for clients following COI best practices. On articles where I have a COI, WP:COI currently requires me to find a disinterested editor willing to review my work and merge suggested draft content into article-space. I saw that you were also creating GA articles and therefore presumably are familiar with our norms for company pages and I was wondering if you would be willing to help out from time-to-time on articles where I have disclosed a COI. For example, there are still some errors on a BLP page on Bev Perdue that I have pointed out here using Request Edit. I do not have a financial connection here, but do have a potential COI, so I am using Request Edit on the Talk page to ask a disinterested editor to fix the errors, in order to avoid even the remote appearance of manipulation, etc.. CorporateM (Talk) 17:07, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
- @CorporateM: Thanks for writing and for thinking of me. Apologies, but I do not have time to review content contributed by other users, at least not right now. I enjoy conducting research, creating content, and supporting in-person and outreach collaborations. These keep me busy enough! --Another Believer (Talk) 17:40, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Check over my new entry?
Hi! I just finished the entry I started at the Portland feminist artists edit-a-thon you organized. I think my entry is a little rough, so I'm wondering if you can check it over and use your skills to make it more in line with Wikipedia's quality entries. It's the entry for artist Cristy Road. THANK YOU! Sarahmirk (talk) 04:54, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- @Sarahmirk: Great job on the article, truly! I moved the page so that "Road" is capitalized, added a couple additional categories, included a bar at the bottom with relevant portals, and made her name in the lead bold (per house manual of style). All minor edits, really. I also added the article to a few related WikiProjects (see its talk page). I hope this helps! Thanks again for coming to the edit-a-thon. I do hope to see you at another one soon, and of course, feel fee to contact me anytime! --Another Believer (Talk) 14:40, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

The article Bonnie Bronson Fellowship has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Zero evidence of notability for this regional award
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DGG ( talk ) 04:40, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Perth and Melbourne
Hello. Thank you for your message. In Perth, Western Australia, there isn't much in terms of gay life as far as I can tell. There is only one bar, but it can't be that old. There is however a magazine, OutInPerth, which should have its own page here, in a similar manner to the stub I created for Out & About Newspaper when I was living in Nashville, Tennessee a few years ago. I'm sure there must be a lot of buried/hidden gay history, but I'm not sure how to find it. I am also moving to Melbourne next week and there should be more there. Zigzig20s (talk) 11:11, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- @Zigzig20s: Thanks for letting me know! I realize there may not be too many "notable" (by Wikipedia standards) local LGBT sites, but you could always edit articles like "LGBT rights in Australia", film, LGBT people, popular culture, etc. Really, whatever interests you! :) Good luck with your move to Melbourne--I've heard great things about the city! --Another Believer (Talk) 16:45, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Honestly I think Perth is behind the times when it comes to gay rights. It's still socially acceptable to be openly homophobic among young adults, and I was talking to a politician at Parliament House a few weeks ago who talked about the high suicide rate among young people, but did not mention gay bullying at all. The main gay bar, The Court, looks very generic (though quite big), but it was built in the 19th century and was used by labour unions apparently, so it could do with a page. The magazine too, if I manage to find out when it was started. Again there must be a lot of hidden gay history, but I don't see it. Part of the problem is that the mining industry is very homophobic, partly because those multinational corporations do businesses in homophobic countries in Africa, etc. I am gay, and am partly moving because I need a better private life! I do hope in time we are able to unearth more gay history in Western Australia and we are able to fundraise for gay memorials, etc., but that will take a while. Btw I used to edit LGBT articles a lot maybe five years ago, then I more or less stopped. Great to see you are active on that front! Zigzig20s (talk) 23:44, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Also, there may be enough openly gay wikipedians in Melbourne to do an edit-a-thon. Zigzig20s (talk) 23:50, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- I would consider drafting a short article for The Court, if you think it meets notability criteria. Perhaps the magazine, too? Any articles you think should be included may be added here: Wikipedia:WLP2014#Suggested_topics. Listing them might inspire someone else to start the articles, if you do not have time at the moment. Thanks for editing LGBT-related articles, historically. I hope you have time to make a few contributions this month as part of Wiki Loves Pride. :) --Another Believer (Talk) 01:17, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Zigzig: Replied at your wall. But in short, I think your characterisation of Perth above is unfair, and I think had you interfaced with the local (and very active) Wikipedian community during your stay in Perth, you'd have got a much wider window into the Perth community (especially outside the western suburbs which is regarded by most Perth people as elitist). Orderinchaos 02:05, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Potential issuse
Hi - you have spammed projects with your material in country projects where the death penalty exists for the project your are promoting. Wikipedia is not bound by censorship, ok - but to spam middle eastern country projects suggests either a naivete or a serious lack of understanding the issue of the seriousness of promoting what is in effect an offence that is resolved by death. Please consider that leaving your message at Islamic middle eastern projects is in extraordinary bad taste.
Read and look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_by_country_or_territory - and check where you have left your message. Many would consider such an action more seriously than I could possibly express here. satusuro 03:03, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Read the map. It is up to you - I wouldnt post in countries that have the death penalty. However as so many on wikipedia seem to do please ignore my concern if you wish to. In less egalitarian online locations I suspect your postings would have been removed. It goes back to you - making a judgement as to the status of various practices around the globe, and where acknowledging it might endanger life. satusuro 04:27, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- I disagree. I think Another Believer is doing a great job. Gays should NOT have to censor themselves because the Third World is behind the times. Zigzig20s (talk) 04:31, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

The Wiki Loves Pride edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday, June 21 from noon–4pm at Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 236 at Portland State University. Prior Wikipedia editing is not required; assistance will be available the day of the event. Attendees should bring their own laptops and cords. Feel free to showcase your work here!

Oh, no worries. I was just confused. If it looked good, though, that's what I'm aiming for. :) I really do like that Wiki is a collaborative process and that we all get to help each other out to expand the best knowledge base around. In 2 weeks, I'll have been on here a year! Time flies.

Amazing. It is definitely easier to start from that version. Hey, I totally forgot about the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby. And it's a pity because we could have collaborated on its nomination as a GA. My love is love (talk) 22:15, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- @My love is love: Glad to hear! There might be a couple other former versions of articles to start with. You might check these redirects before starting anything from scratch. The article will live at these links regardless. Regarding The Great Gatsby: Music from Baz Luhrmann's Film, I started the article, and it is likely close to being GA-ready, but I did not take the initiative to go to GAN since I did not expand the article myself (rarely do I nominate articles I did not expand, since I am less familiar with the content). The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed
Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.
It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitz gmail.com. I have written 20 GAs and have just crammed another half-dozen into the queue for review, but have never reviewed one. As a small to mid-sized company page, your GAN looked ideal for me to get my feet wet with my first GA review.
However, I noticed that you have a conflict of interest and have not specified what it is. I don't have an interest in knowing, except to see if your COI is such that you may be uncomfortable with my reviewing it, even though I contribute heavily in helping companies create GA articles about themselves.
In other words, I didn't know if your COI was along the lines of "my friend works there", in which case it shouldn't be a problem for me to review, or more along the lines of "GU Energy Labs paid me to write their article" in which case maybe I should leave it alone. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter
After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.
The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Sven Manguard (submissions).
The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi.
I hope my intervention on The Sound of Music Live! issue did not upset you. I just felt the soundtrack made the page way too long and hard to navigate especially with two Critical reception sections. If I have I am sorry for it and I hope that you will forgive me, if it has not well that is awesome. Again I do hope you are not upset. Bumblebee9999 (talk) 21:34, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
- @Bumblebee9999: Quite the opposite! I was glad to see the creation of a separate article for the soundtrack. :) --Another Believer (Talk) 21:37, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
- @Another Believer: Good! I am glad! :) I hope you will edit it and help expand it, I feel it needs more reviews but I am having problems finding any so if you have any please add them. (Actually it needs more but I am not sure what.) :) Bumblebee9999 (talk) 21:40, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey! I'n noticing that your signature is using the obsolete <font>
tag and I'm wondering if you might like to update your signature to code that isn't stuck in the 1990's. If you are intersted, I suggest replacing:
--<span style="color:navy;">Another Believer</span> (<span style="color:#cc6600;">Talk</span>)
with:
--<span style="color:navy">Another Believer</span> (<span style="color:#C60">Talk</span>)
which will result in a 157 character long signature with an appearance of: --Another Believer (Talk)
compared to your existing 147 character long signature of: --Another Believer (Talk)
— Either way. Happy editing! — Technical 13 (e • t • c) 21:47, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Commonscat in Portland
I noticed from my watchlist that you're adding links to commons categories to sites on the NRHP in Portland. First off, your contributions are welcomed and are a big improvement to the respective lists. Second, you may be interested in a process that will largely automate what you're doing. I haven't checked your contributions on Commons, but if you are creating/finding categories for these sites and then adding them individually to the lists, you may want to check out this user script, which will allow you to add the links to the list all at once. If you tag each category on Commons with commons:Template:NRHP (and the NRIS refnum of the relevant site) and wait to add the links here, then install this script in your javascript when you've tagged all the categories, you can click the generated button at the top of the list and add all the tagged categories at once. Feel free to continue doing what you're doing, but if making so many edits and going back and forth is becoming a pain, the script might alleviate some of it. If you decide to use it and have any questions, let me know! Just trying to help!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 13:58, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Another Edit-a-Thon?
Hi friend — I want to help organize another edit-a-thon during the week of September 8th. Would you be up for coming and walking people through how to make usernames and get started editing? I don't feel like I know enough yet to actually teach people how to get started and how to write entries correctly. I'm thinking it could be at the IPRC or Ford Food and Drink and would be four hours long or so. This week is good because it coincides with the XOXO tech festival and a lot of tech-minded people will be in town, so maybe some other Wiki folks could come. Commons-inline
Another Believer, can you cite guidance for your edit, please.[2] My reading of WP:EL is that my edit was compliant, to wit, "Some templates exist for linking to Wikimedia Foundation projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Commons
is an example of a graphical template that is commonly used to link to Wikimedia Commons. All such templates have inline versions (e.g., Commons-inline
), or you may choose to link to them exactly like you would link to any other website. See Wikipedia:Wikimedia sister projects#When_to_link for further information." Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 05:00, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
- Responded at the appropriate venue. --Another Believer (Talk) 14:26, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind response.[3] I think articles look less cluttered with Commons-inline, for the most part. Also, when the Commons gallery is well-maintained, which is frequently the case for species of biota, I prefer to link to the gallery page. Compare Commons:Hieracium albiflorum, organized by subject with location captions, to Commons:Category:Hieracium albiflorum, for example. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:31, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

This is an opportunity for all folks with a camera (or a sketchpad and scanner, doncha know) and an interest in the National Register of Historic Places to just have some low-key fun and maybe get some barnstars. Come submit some photos or pose a challenge to your fellow editors. And maybe, just maybe, along the line we'll improve the encyclopedia... (Note that while this contest is intentionally concurrent with Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 and the Wikipedia Summer of Monuments, there ain't gonna be no cash prizes or press releases here. But compete in 'em all if you like - we won't be jealous.) — Ipoellet (talk) 22:53, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter
The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:
- Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
- Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
- Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
- Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
- 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
- Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
- Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.
We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.
There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.
There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!
