Etymology Task Force
editHi Anthony, and thanks for joining up to the Etymology Task Force! I don't edit etymology articles that much, but I set the task force up so I'm pretty much the go-to guy for task-force-related things. If you would like any pointers about getting involved or about general Wikipedia matters, don't hesitate to ask. Also, you should feel free to ask at the WikiProject Linguistics talk page for any content-related things. Someone there is bound to be able to help you. editHi AnthonyW90, I'm Baffle gab1978 (talk) and I'm an experienced copy-editor at the GOCE. You asked here for some copy-editing tips. Hi Anthony, what's the status of your GOCE copy-edit of the article? I see you've done some work on it but nothing since 12th April and you haven't declared it done on the Request page. Can you please let us know whether you plan to finish it? I'll return it to the queue if I don't hear from you in the next week. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 05:39, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry about that! Been a bit pre-occupied recently (got made redundant) but all is well, and I do plan on finishing it! I have been working on a copy at User:AnthonyW90/IvyQueenCopyEdit because I was aware that fairly regularly small improvements were being made to the original! Please feel free to return it to the queue, and if someone fixes it up before me then that's no problem - it's all experience! Thank you! AnthonyW90 (talk) 11:56, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the update; I'm sorry to hear about your job, obviously the real world must take priority over online activities, so it's understandable and I hope I wasn't being pushy. I'll put a note on the requester's page and let him know you're editing in your userspace and that you intend to complete the c/e. I think it's probably best for him to withdraw the request, since there's little point having two copies being edited separately. So we'll see where DivaKnockouts wants to handle things before I return it to the queue. Thanks again for the update; best wishes for job-hunting. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 16:46, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page visitor) Hi Anthony, I saw this because of the discussion on the GOCE Requests page. It's very risky to take a copy to edit in your own space like this, because if some else edits the article in mainspace, either you're going to have to incorporate their edits in your copy, or you're going to end up overwriting their edits when you copy your work back into mainspace, which would be very discourteous. The right way to handle this is to use the {{GOCEinuse}} template on the article in mainspace, and edit there. I like to change this to {{under construction}} overnight while I'm not working, to give other editors a chance. Regards, --Stfg (talk) 18:16, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Stfg - sorry about that! I have the article on my watchlist and have incorporated all new edits to the original article into my own as I've been going along! In future I will use the 'in use' and 'under construction' templates as you have suggested - for now, I would like to continue as I am - as I said before I do not mind if the article is worked on without me - I kind of picked this article because it was large and on a topic I knew nothing about, and would therefore serve as good practice/learning for copy editing - ergo I did not initially want to make live edits, and was planning on just working at it and then inviting GOCE in to comment on it - unfortunately the whole process has been interrupted by real life and has taken longer than I had initially hoped! Thank you, both Stfg and Baffle gab for your understanding!AnthonyW90 (talk) 21:12, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Hi again. (Don't forget to sign your posts with ~~~~ .) Yeah, it's OK to continue like that so long as you know the risk. I took a quick look at what you've done with it so far in your space, and you clearly know what you're doing, so I wouldn't hesitate to edit articles in situ in future. Sorry about the redundancy. Well, maybe sorry, but I had a redundancy too, years ago, and in the end it proved to be a blessing. I hope it does for you too. Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 20:58, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, oops, I meant to say that nobody else will take on the copy edit while it's marked as {{working}} on the requests page, so it needs either doing or releasing. Best, --Stfg (talk) 21:01, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Ooops sorry! Still getting used to the whole ~~~~ thing! Even if it IS written right there at the bottom of the Text Editor box!! Haha! Yeah - the whole redundancy thing isn't worrying me too much, I'm young, I'll move on (and hopefully up!) unfortunately it just came a little unexpectedly and just as I was really getting into the flow of things at work! Meh - these things are sent to try us! I will remove the {{working}} tag now, since I don't mind if it is picked up by someone else! But I will post a note myself to mention that I am still 'having a go' at it! Thank you for the encouragement! AnthonyW90 (talk) 21:12, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi again Anthony, I hope you are well. I'm sorry to be pushy (again!) but what's the situation with this copy-edit? There's been no sandbox edits since 25th April. I hope your job-hunting is going well. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 05:18, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. Sorry - so much going on in real life, I think it would be best to pass this one on! Sorry again! Feel free to take on any of the edits I have made so far (there is a 'hidden' note in the sandbox to indicate how far along I've got!) AnthonyW90 (talk) 08:09, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- No worries, thanks for the update, I'll probably take this one on, and I'll probably use your sandbox version and see where that takes us. Thank you for your work on it, I hope you don't feel discouraged from copy-editing and hope to see you at the GOCE soon. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 10:25, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'm now Done; feel free to delete the version in your sandbox. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:10, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- Awesome! Thank you...ummm, how do I go about deleting the page I created? Cheers! AnthonyW90 (talk) 08:10, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- You can mark it for speedy deletion per Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#User_pages by adding {{db-u1}} at the top; the page will appear at CSD and an admin will delete it for you. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 03:32, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

editWe are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.
Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.
Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions
editWe have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:
- Views/Day
- Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
- Quality
- Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.
The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:
- Content
- Is more content needed?
- Headings
- Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
- Images
- Is the number of illustrative images about right?
- Links
- Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
- Sources
- For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians.
