Redlinked Namibian cricketers
editHi there. I know this used to be my "pet project", in a way, but I don't mind showing you what's missing. Recent Namibian cricketers to make their first-class debuts:
- Glenn Foxcroft (CI | CA)
- Pikky Ya France (CI | CA)
- Norbert Manyande (CI | CA)
Nine more and we can make it to 100 names in the category! ;) Bobo. 21:15, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

editHey man. I'm certain I have his name as it was when I first added the Namibian cricketers' names to WP. Just in case you thought I had gone nutty..! Bobo. 12:41, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hey Bobo. I've neglected my 'AssociateAffiliate' name, so I'm doing some work on them!!! I was involved in trying to sign Steenkamp for my cricket club in 2008, so from memory I thought his name looked odd! From time to time cricket sites misspell players names, I've had loads of players where 'Russell' is down as 'Russel' or 'Elliott' is down as 'Elliot'. Cricinfo and cricketarchive must get fed up with me contacting them!!!! I was helpfully made redundant by the DWP last month, so I've saved a fair amount of money to take the summer off: I intend to get 90% of Minor counties cricketers done by September! Celebrity Cricket League
editAgree that currently the league is unfficial and not very notable and involves only celebrities. But considering that this is in India there is always the chance of the organizers involving cricketers in the league, to increase attention and attraction. So, we have to have this article ready for such situation also. We just cannot create the article then and dig out all past details.
Also, I don not think that not much interest outside India is a criterion. Afterall, test cricket is played by 10 out of the 220 odd nations in the world. So, cricket itself do not have much interest in the whole world. Again, who else is interested in leagues run in Zimbabwe, Kenya and all, even though official ? Also, there are 1000s of articles on Indian topics which do not draw any interestby people outside. Same is the case with articles from any country.
If your main concern is the categories, we can discuss on removing some categories and keep only the acceptable ones for the time being. Our intention should not be to delete articles. but how to improve them. But, I strongly oppose deleting the article beacause there is lot of interest shown to this event by the film lovers in India, which itself will runs into billions of people. There is also going to be a TV coverage of this tournament. This league will get more TV viewers than an Ashes series, because this is held in India.
One more point. Indian Cricket League was also unofficial, it is now defunct also. Still it holds all the categories and have a valid article in Wikipedia.
Hope you are convinced now. If so, please visit the article and perform the possible improvements, revisiting the categories and removing the deletion tag.
Anish Viswa 02:00, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
- Not a case whether it will have interest at this stage. A league in Zimbabwe would be notable on here because it carries T20 status. Although not official, the ICL was a professional league, which had notable players and gained coverage. This league is simply not notable, I'd expect its scorecards would struggle to get on CricketArchive. AssociateAffiliate (talk) 08:40, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
I deleted the deletion tag since WP:CRIC was no longer applicable to the article. No the article is not tagged to any cricket category. Anyway, let the tag be there since the matter is finalised. But I didn't edit comment in the discussion pages and I don't understand why you made such a comment. As I asked before also, do you have any suggestion/idea to improve the article to retain the article. If so, please share.
Anish Viswa 10:00, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
- I didn't. It's a general tag. Seeing as it is a cricket article it applies 100% of WP:CRIC. Removing categories doesn't mean it doesn't apply, many cricket articles exist out there without any cricket categories. AssociateAffiliate (talk) 10:18, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Jumping Jack, or Jovial Jack
editYes, I do have a copy of a collection of Gibson's writings and I'm pretty sure the story is in there somewhere, though it may take some time to put it together. The gist of it is that Gibson (and drinking friends in the pavilion at Bristol) felt Davey's sterling qualities were somewhat overlooked on account of his lack of a second initial in a team that often boasted players with three of them. So they sought to rectify matters. If I recall right, it took some time, and several of Gibson's columns in The Times, but eventually the Gloucestershire scorecard showed him as "J. J.", though it was never correct. I'll look over the next few days. Johnlp (talk) 20:06, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Cricket categories
editI see you have removed all the cricket categories from William Davies (footballer born 1855). I am rather perlexed by the logic of your edit summary. Although the Category:Shropshire cricketers says "The players listed in this category have represented Shropshire County Cricket Club in List-A cricket.", this is inconsistent with other categories. For example, we have Clair (Hampshire cricketer) and Allen (Essex cricketer) categorised under their respective counties although both played before 1800, long before the concept of First Class cricket. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 14:09, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- Both Clair and Allen were later deemed to have played in first-class cricket by cricket historians. If we had categories for players who played miscellaneous matches, then we'd have cricket categories under Phil Neville and Michael Parkinson. In the case of Clair and Allen, they would have played matches later deemed first-class for their respective counties before the formation of that counties county club, so get the relevant categories based on that one first-class match. If an early cricketer played first-class for team A but miscellaneously for team B, they only get a category for team A. That only applies to certain counties (some of which are Minor Counties today).
The Shropshire cricketes category itself also goes on to say: "Other players listed have played first-class, List-A or Twenty20 cricket for another team, but have represented Shropshire in non-notable matches, such as those in the Minor Counties Championship and MCCA Knockout Trophy."
Someone like Ralph H. Fowler was notable in his own right, plus played Minor Counties cricket for a current county club, therefore gets the relevant categories. We don't treat Second XI matches in the same light, hence Phil Neville has no cricket related categories, or notable people who played a match for a county before the formation of a county club, in which the match has been deemed non first-class. The rest of the Shropshire requirement is self explanatory, Daniel Redfearn of Derbyshire played in 2006 (or 07) for them, so gets the category having played major cricket for Derbyshire. Given though that the mention of Shropshire in that body of text could have 'County Cricket Club' after it. Shropshire is a fairly new county club, formed only in 1957, therefore the restricting of cricketers allows for an accurate picture of how many notable cricketers have played for the team, like Category:Buckinghamshire cricketers (which isn't complete). Plenty of Aristocrats with articles on here played for the county before its present county club formed, but due to this don't qualify for the relevant categories. editThe article Adam Soilleux has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Does not meet cricket player notability requirements. No reliable sources.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. i kan reed (talk) 14:04, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
- It's your right to contest proposed deletion, but which of the requirements on WP:CRIN do you think Soilleux meets? I certainly couldn't figure it out from the article. It looks like he played once for a college team. Which one do they meet? i kan reed (talk) 14:17, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
- He has played a first-class match, which per WP:CRIN makes him notable. The university team he plays for, Loughborough MCC University, has first-class status against county opposition, playing three matches per season which hold that status. AssociateAffiliate (talk) 14:27, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Durham University Cricket Ground - geograph.org.uk - 506132.jpg
editA tag has been placed on File:Durham University Cricket Ground - geograph.org.uk - 506132.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. I was also hoping to get Wales MC to 100 notable players - 98 is the limit on that one :( AssociateAffiliate (talk) 12:24, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Temporary(?) retirement
editThat is sad. I hope it's not because you're lacking in feedback from me ever since I stopped contributing to WP on a regular basis. You've done some awesome work, thank you. I hope you come back soon. Bobo. 22:07, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Cricket in Afghanistan
editWelcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would ask that you assume good faith while interacting with other editors. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Added note -- Please do not threaten edit warring. I restored much of the material you supplied and rearranged the presentation so as to balance the section. It does need improvements in other respects in that the non-cricket material lacks WP:RS. For example, the mention of Afghan Hounds and hunting needs a reference. But more importantly, edit warring will certainly lead to blocks. Thanks, and thank you for your many excellent contributions regarding cricket. --S. Rich (talk) 14:48, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- My frustration comes about because the editor is blanking any reference to cricket in Afghanistan. The editor denies that it is the most popular sport in the country (which multiple sources exist for). Not to mention the fact that Afghanistan appeared in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 - its first World Cup appearance in any cricket format. This in a period in which just three years ago the national team was unheard of and pretty much a non-entity. The national team also had One Day International and Twenty20 International status - this is no Seychelles or France - it is now considered a major cricketing nation. It plays first-class cricket too, last year it won the 2009-10 ICC Intercontinental Cup at its first attempt. I cannot understand why the editor feels the need to blank any reference to cricket without giving an adequate reason to doing so: either the editor is ignorant to crickets presence there, or for ethnic or personal reasons doesn't like the sport. Perhaps a warning should go his way for disruptive editing? AssociateAffiliate (talk) 15:22, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- I'll keep my eye open for such edits. I'm not exceptionally knowledgeable on the subject of cricket, but I do see a pattern where each editor wants "his/her" particular version to be in place. My edits were an effort to work around the stated, implied, and non-stated objections to the edits IOT reach a consensus. Hence my setting up the subsections for the Sport section. Often tweaks here and there achieve what you want. In the Afghanistan piece, be prepared to encounter more "disruptive" edits to your contribution. And keep in mind that backing up your edits with WP:POLICY notes and RS will usually overcome those "disruptive" edits. For example, you've added info about hunting but there is no RS for this info in the recent edit or the Afghan Hound article. With that in mind, any removal of the hunting info will be justified.--S. Rich (talk) 16:04, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Is it worth noting that the silver Afghanistan won at the 2010 Asian games was just their third in the Games? Nev1 (talk) 16:17, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Reply re Stalkers
editHi AA, and thanks for your message last week. I don't look in too often now as I'm so busy with work and family matters but am thinking of starting again. In fact, a friend told me about the latest outburst from the crank(s): never sure if there's a second one besides Asquith/Daft as sometimes you get coherent drivel while mostly it's incoherent like that last post signed Tillman. You and Moondyne took the right approach: ignore him, revert his posts and get him banned. That Kesteven Bullet ID should have been blocked long ago but there was a sort of tacit agreement among Johnlp, Sarastro and myself to leave it alone if he behaved himself. Clearly he's flipped again and the only thing to do is get shut of him. I don't think this guy Mikeleavens is anything to do with it, though, having scanned his contribs just now. Seems to have a bee in his bonnet about notability but otherwise harmless enough, I reckon. I'm not bothered about the major cricket article and it looks as if the guys have dealt with the redlink problem very well. Thanks also for your kind words on the CRIC page. Now I've looked in again I might even find something useful to do here!
Keep up the good work. Oh, by the way, you need to make sure you always give clear hand signals: lol. Regards. ----Jack | talk page 17:08, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
I could tell you a good deal about Mr Asquith. He is a long-term member of the ACS and thinks its word is law so far as cricket history is concerned. He objects very strongly to anyone, even Wisden and the likes of John Arlott, having a different view to the little clique he represents. You would think, therefore, that a site like CricInfo would be entirely based on "ACS views" and WP would cite ACS in every single article (in fact, you can probably count them on one hand). He does not like anyone who is non-ACS writing about cricket history on here and that is why he carries out these puerile attacks. Asquith apparently blames me for him losing the editorship of the ACS journal several years ago but I had nothing to do with it: the then committee sacked him because of the quality of his writing (as you say, a child could do better). Asquith is the original Richard Daft and has used any number of other names and Ip addresses (I note he's presently operating out of Scotland but he's usually in the Midlands) and I do think he has a confederate who can write properly but still spouts the same stupid rubbish. The thing to do is get shut of him whenever he resurfaces, as you have been doing. I see Asquith has interfered with the to-do list on CRIC and maybe, as you suggest, I'll tackle some of these items especially in Bobo's lists. You've done really well there with all the new articles you've created. All the best. ----Jack | talk page 19:47, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
I reckon so. I see the KB account wasn't deleted, though! All the best. ----Jack | talk page 18:09, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

- I'm sorry that I don't work on them any more - I've effectively retired from Wikipedia, as I'm now working as a supervisor on another Wiki-based website. I do check WT:CRIC and my user talk page on a daily basis, though, and I could never leave this place entirely. Bobo. 21:46, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
- Are you kidding - those are the ones I used to pick off first. ;) By the end those were pretty much the only articles I was creating...! Especially from the Sri Lankan, Indian, and Pakistani teams... Bobo. 21:52, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
