Nov portal updates
Doing a rolling update for Birthday month, in anticipation of your photos. I've updated the quote and added a news item. I believe that there is consensus for Belleau Wood for the Article. There are a number of choices for Biography, which has not been settled on. The top three are Edward B. Cole (fought at BW; expert on machine guns, NC, DSC, etc.; very interesting story, in the process of expanding; perhaps a good idea for someone not as well known as the others); Louis Cukela (2 Medals of Honor for Soissons in WWI (Army and Navy), also fought at BW); Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. (fought at BW, as well as WWII and Korea. 20th CMC.) Need your thoughts. — ERcheck (talk) 19:40, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- One other thought for biography - Robert H. Barrow - former CMC who died this past Thursday (10/30/2008). — ERcheck (talk) 03:14, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Do you have time to update the article (Battle of Belleau Wood)? I'll do the biography - Shepherd per your comments. — ERcheck (talk) 01:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- BTW, I the image in the Belleau Wood infobox (Scott's painting) was on the Portal in May 2006. One good image, if the correct copyright info can be found, is Schoonover's Marines at Belleau Wood.[1][2]. Can you find more info? — ERcheck (talk) 03:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- I did a lot of searching and found one site that seemed to indicate that Schoonover's painting was done in 1918. It seems to be very widely used - I've found that it is in the USMC Museum collection, the U.S. Army collection, used in Leatherneck and the Gazette as well as many other sites, and even on a book cover — thus, I guess it is in the public domain, but I cannot prove it yet. — ERcheck (talk) 12:52, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Leaving to you (1) Update of article, (2) update of image. Please drop me a note if you won't be able to do these. — ERcheck (talk) 12:52, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Weir Word
Thanks for your service. I've been in 10+ years and have heard it a few times. It is sourced, but I can't find any links for it. I think it should stay. Thanks. OddibeKerfeld (talk) 20:23, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Re: Template:USMCportal
Thanks for doing the Article update. Note that you had the image size of 450px. I looked at both on a 24" screen and a small laptop. It renders wrong and crosses the column divide. I put it back to 350px, which works on both sizes.
Re Template:USMCportal: I'm sure you saw what was used before — which was not in tempate format. A couple of comments:
- Deliberately used the adjective "selected" rather than "featured" article/biography, etc., since the articles are not necessarily FAs.
- My thoughts on linking more than just the Portal (which was all that was linked on the tag that was there before) — if only the Portal is linked, the reader would go to the portal and get a broader view. From there, they could look at the archive, and also all of the other items available on the Portal.
Looking forward to the photos from the Ball and an answer from the Historical Division. While you are asking, could you inquire whether they have more photos of Edward B. Cole and William A. Eddy? Both article need more photos; the Eddy article needs a portrait. — ERcheck (talk) 01:46, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- On the template, as the seal is on the left, a centered text does not provide the right balance. Try it without centering and with out a break for the date. I think wrapping makes it more balanced.
- Too bad about history division. Perhaps Tony the Marine, with his contacts might be able to get something. — ERcheck (talk) 03:02, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Re: November 2008 - HMH-366 and HMLA-467
I read in the lemmas of HMH-366 and HMLA-467 that they are under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 29 so I added them to that Group. --noclador (talk) 15:08, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi
Hi. My name is Hunter, and I plan on going to the recruiter on December 1st after 5 long years of waiting to become a United States Marine. As a Marine, I was wondering how I should run, such as foot form. A link to this question which I recently posted is here:[[3]]. Thanks Corporal, --AtTheAbyss (talk) 04:39, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
New birthday ball article & new Commons category; new article?
Good article creation — United States Marine Corps birthday ball. This is such a part of USMC tradition. How about one on the Pageant? Or combine to have "birthday celebration"?
To capture such images, I created "United States Marine Corps Birthday" category in the Commons. Seeded it with images from the 2008 Pageant at Twentynine Palms:
- See LaVine, Cpl. Nicole A. "Combat Center honors past warriors, battles in pageant". Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms photos. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California: United States Marine Corps. Retrieved 2008-11-08..
The article is a reference that could be used to create a Pageant article.
November portal image - will you post?
Will you post the image? If you don't have a good one from your Ball, how about this one? Image:BirthdayPageant 29Palms 081104-M-6603L-046.jpg — I like the composition. Could be linked to the new Birthday Ball article. — ERcheck (talk) 00:01, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- I made the change so it would be there for 10 Nov. Feel free to change it out if you have a better image. — ERcheck (talk) 01:14, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

- Naw, I ain't famous that's for sure that is why I find it amussing, but my son wrote this article about me Tony Santiago because of my 15 minutes of fame. Semper FI. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:15, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- I try not too, but I've edited some spelling and the images. The resolutions of the ones originally posted were terrible. Hey, once again Happy Veterans Day. Tony the Marine (talk) 17:09, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Portal comments; War dogs
Finally saw your suggestions about portal ideas for December. See my comments. With Thanksgiving coming up next week, it would be nice to be ready for update asap.
On "war dogs", are you going to be spending time working on it?
The USMC images that you pointed out are public domain, so could/should be uploaded to Commons. There is a category for USMC dogs.[5] Are you working on it?
— ERcheck (talk) 23:34, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
- BTW, care to add your name to the "maintainers" of the USMC Portal - here. — ERcheck (talk) 14:57, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Setting up Portal pages for automatically posting on 1 Dec
Check on the USMC Portal talk page - I'm setting up the Portal so that the new postings automatically come up on the 1st of the month (if they are ready). — ERcheck (talk) 00:50, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- I've started a draft for the December article, as noted on the coordination page. — ERcheck (talk) 15:28, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- QUERY: Do you like the new set up for updating? I decided to be bold and implement it. — ERcheck (talk) 20:58, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- IDEA: Do you think it would be worthwhile to make a list of bios, unit pages, conflict pages, etc. to work on and get in shape for featuring; as opposed to the monthly thoughts? — ERcheck (talk) 21:28, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Your time; 96 and deployed
So, planning to use your 96 hours to work on Wikipedia articles? Great! Care to line up your favorite articles, biographies, pictures, and quotes in the new pages? They can be switched around - which month/year - later, based on themes, etc. Especially, as you will have an extended hiatus from Wikipedia, if you are willing, this would be a big help in keeping the Portal updated.
You'll be missed here while deployed. Stay safe. — ERcheck (talk) 15:28, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps if you make a list on the talk page of each index page of your favorite candidates for each, you/I/others can start working on getting them in shape and preloaded. I've chosen James Devereux for the December biography — Marine commander on Wake Island — Battle of Wake Island was December. I've been working on expanding his article. There is more out there, as he was also a Congressman; and there are articles on his POW experience. I'm going to work it a bit more. If you have a mind to putting the summary on the December page, please feel free. I feel no ownership here. But, of course, you are working on the article. So, I think we are in good shape for December. I've got the image loaded (and you made an update), got the quote loaded, we're each working on article and bio. You had been wanting an Iwo Jima theme, so I choose February and have a picture and quote loaded. — ERcheck (talk) 21:46, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Happy Thanksgiving
Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving Day. I hear that you wil be deploying once again to Irag. I want you to know that you have brothers over here in Wikipedia who care about you always. Semper Fi, Tony the Marine (talk) 22:37, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- I wish Happy Thanksgiving Day too, especially to all people who fight for America. --Novis-M (talk) 00:00, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Happy Thanksgiving! I hope this holiday is a great one for you. Take care, enjoy the day. — ERcheck (talk) 12:46, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
MARPAT vs. ACU
Hello, what do you think is better? USMC MARPAT MCCUU uniform, or Army ACU? I guess you have experiencies with these uniforms as an marine. --Novis-M (talk) 02:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you. So simply said, you think that ACU is more practical like in cost, administration etc, and MCCUU is more for the combat, right? Thats also why the uniforms have these patterns - ACU universal, MCCUU better for combat. Oh thanks, this is my first thanksgiving in my life, so I can't wait!! :) --Novis-M (talk) 03:14, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
By the way, you really visited Czech Republic?? --Novis-M (talk) 22:06, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Oh no :D well, thats how things usually go in Europe :D but Czech Republic has also many beautiful places, and nice nature and history. I actually like it more here, in upsate New York, and I'm glad I can be here in US for whole year. But you should definitely visit Czech Republic sometime! --Novis-M (talk) 22:16, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, and be sure to visit Český Krumlov. I am in the Adirondack Mountains, so north of the Mohawk Valley - there is lot of snow, and it is actually snowing right now. But down in Saratoga Springs area, and Glens Falls theres no snow, too early for real winter I guess. I was in Albany twice - first time was when I arrived, and second time I was walking through downtown area - really nice city. But NYC is best! :) --Novis-M (talk) 22:26, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
War dogs
I've completed the reference formatting. I'll review the article in a bit more detail soon. Now, I've got to get to work on the December bio ... unless of course, you have the time or inclination to start working on it. I don't expect that I will be editing for the next 36 hours or so; I'll check back. — ERcheck (talk) 04:22, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
December update
Hope you've had a good holiday.
The December update is all ready now. I just finished out the biography (James P.S. Devereux). The article (War dogs), picture (V-22 Osprey), and quote (Robert Sherrod) have been completed. I also updated DYK and In the News.
I've lined up some quotes and so forth. Any more advance work is good. — ERcheck (talk) 21:08, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
A Message from RekonDog©
Hello...How do you like the copywrite symbol, added it merely for garnish only. I figured that I haven't bugged you for a bit LOL, but I need some of your guru skills [again] about using some features (I cannot seem to find on help) that would enable me to allow -certain text- to 'not show' on an article, except only by preview/edit. Are you familiar with this or know where I can find further information, any help would be appreciated? Thanks beforehand -Semper Fi!
USMC Amphib Recon Bn
I have read a quite a few books in the recent 3-4 months, good material about the history on Amphib Recon Battalion. Interested that I learned that the history of Division Recon was not in the same thread of history in formation as FMF Recon as most thought. I, for one, am enjoying this journey in the uncovering the history about the dedicated Force Recon and its lineage, as well as Division Recon. Most of the material was also from the the US Gov't Printing Office (GPO) and the History and Museums Division, HQMC —which was a priviledge to get my hands on many pictures. Althought, I don't have a photo scanner nor access to one, it would been nice to scan all my photos for upload. It was certainly improve many Marine Corps-related articles or whatever appealed to ones eyes. Especially the T/E sections of such USMC organizations.
February update
Holland Smith was previously featured on the United States Marine Corps portal as the Selected Biography (1 October - 3 November 2007). I'd appreciate it if you would make another choice. I will then work on bringing the article you select up to at least B-status. — ERcheck (talk) 22:07, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Quite nice ... I just checked the Portal page - all the updating worked. Nice. Another thought for February - Robert Sherrod. I just created a page for him. He was with the Marines on Iwo Jima. If I can find enough information to expand it more, what do you think? — ERcheck (talk) 00:23, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sherrod wrote the definitive book on USMC Aviation in WW2. Looper5920 used/uses it extensively as a reference for his aviation articles. I have tried to occasionally have bios on people who are not Marines but have had an impact or are somehow tied to Marines. In addition, it is good to have some who are not well known - to expand knowledge. My take on Sherrod's reporting from the battlefield in WW II - it helped the people back home to understand the tremendous sacrifices and valor of the Marines in the Pacific. His reports were featured in TIME magazine, as well as the Saturday Evening Post, which were both nationally read. I'll work on the article, and let you know when I think it is in reasonable shape. If not for February, then maybe another month. — ERcheck (talk) 00:45, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- It is always good to have your perspective. I'd like to hear your other suggestions for the Feb bio. It may be better to have Sherrod later - perhaps in August/September for V-J Day. — ERcheck (talk) 01:00, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Zembiec's article needs a lot of clean up. Though it has a lot of references, etc., there are some missing/inconsistent pieces. I spent some time trying to verify # tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. One place says 4 in Iraq, but from piecing together other articles, it seems 4 combat tours - one in Kosovo, one in Afghanistan, and two in Iraq; with Afghanistan coming between his two Iraq tours. That said, his article is a good candidate for the Portal after it is cleaned up a bit. — ERcheck (talk) 12:38, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Naval Forces Korea, Naval Forces Japan and Naval Forces, Marianas are not considered major commands even though they are shore commands for the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. All three shore commands and the 7th Fleet fall under as subcomponents of the United States Pacific Fleet which is a major naval command do they not?. They should probably be integreated into the United States Pacific Fleet. Neovu79 (talk) 05:25, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
Picture worth using
How about this picture? Re-enlistment — Marine Corps images. Can you think of an appropriate caption / summary. What article(s) would it illustrate, if any? — ERcheck (talk) 04:24, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- Image uploaded — Image:InvertedRepel_reenlistment_USMC.jpg — on the Commons. BTW, unless you are completely tied in to a particular image for a certain month / it already is in keeping with the month's theme, I may do some re-arranging to meet a theme. Looks like you've gotten a lot done with articles, and images. The quotes are easy — I can take care of them. — ERcheck (talk) 01:30, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. I wasn't necessarily planning re-arrangements; but, if something came up, I wanted to be aligned. Now that the picture above is uploaded, if you wanted to feature it sooner, you could.
- * Nice work on all the advance prep. While you are so prolific, if you would like to make bio suggestions by any of the months, I'll work on expanding/improving some of the articles. I'm anticipating my schedule will continue to have periods of Wiki inavailability, similar to the past 12 months. — ERcheck (talk) 12:20, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you
My brother, I want to thank you for your comments in the Capt. Ivan Castro talk page. I also. want to share that my DYK hook for Ivan Castro (soldier) drew 71,300 page views while it was featured on the Main Page. That's an all-time DYK record for most page views! The list of all-time top DYK page views can be seen here, and your Castro article is now #1: Wikipedia:DYKBEST#All-time best of DYK. However, the disrespect twoards the article and the decimation of the marathon section have discouraged me from ever nominating any of the articles that I have created for "DYK" again. Once again, thank you for your support. Tony the Marine (talk) 05:56, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
- You are right, sooner or later he'll go away. What I'm going to do is create archive of the talk page. I believe that enough has been said about the DYK as a topic for now. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:53, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
