Making Ribbons

Hi, I see that Wikipedia's got just about everything related to military decorations and I found your userpage. I'm trying to design some ribbons for this online game I'm playing and I'm trying to see what editors here are using for the overlaying horizontal lines to imitate the cloth stitching of the ribbons. I have some questions, please: On the photo, I saw that Mattis has got a clasp on his NATO Meritorious Service Medal, and one on his NATO ISAF Medal. This is written on the NATO Medal page: "All medals except the Macedonian NATO Medal have corresponding campaign clasps, however some militaries (such as the United States) prohibit the wearing of the medal with a clasp and instead authorize service stars." So, shouldn't we add a service star to his non-article 5 medal ribbon? Plus, on one photo, you can clearly see that he's got at least one service star on his Iraq Campaign Medal. And, on the official photo, on the lower left (brightness to MAX), you can see he's wearing the JFCOM logo... At least, we know now that he hasn't got an order of the french legion of honor. As for Petraeus, do you know a reference where he received his Tong-Il Medal? Plus, on Stéphane Abrial's page, I couldn't identify two ribbons, just like on George W. Casey, Jr.'s page... Thanks for some correcting, if you have got the time... Plus, did you see www.socom.mil? They have completely redesigned it... I couldn't find an official A-class uniform photo of commander Eric T. RE: Snipers

Yes..very confusing! I'll elaborate much I can...tell me what you come up with and I'll send suggestions if you'd like.

The STA and Scout Sniper Platoons are indeed separate platoons and assets...but they both originated from the same school. Similar trade in skills, but the commanders use these separately for different missions, accordingly. And not sure why there are 'two' articles about Marine snipers....the Scout Sniper and Scout Sniper Platoon? Two different articles incorporating information about the same exact unit.

However, the Scout (Tank) Company are a WWII-era unit that dissolved momentarily after the end of the war—this has to be separated because three to four different Marine units originate from this 'one' asset that used to exist—it must be treated as a History reference for the other articles that pertain to it.

Scout (Tank) Company of WWII era is the patron of all these assets...Division Recon Co/Bn, S/S and STA Plts, and the LAR bn.

Yes, sorry, I seem to over-exert my explanations; Scout Sniper Platoon should be merged into Scout Sniper. And, the Scout Sniper School is a school that the STA Platoon also share, alongside with the Scout Sniper Platoon. I was wondering if it should be a separate article or not?

Did you even read that page? There's nothing on there that isn't already public information. Heck, read the 3rd Battalion 11th Marines and MWHS-2 articles, they say the exact same thing. For that matter, the Marine Corps itself constantly publishes biographical information that are just as detailed regarding the same time periods, for example: http://www.tecom.usmc.mil/HD/Whos_Who/CONWAY_JT.htm

I'm pretty sure that the enemy already knows there are Marines on Al Asad, and one who can find my userpage would certainly be able to find that my unit is here from many many more resources. In fact, I specifically waited to post that until MONTHS after the local papers had written articles (and posted them online) about those deployments. I have said nothing about ongoing operations, troop movements, or when I'm headed home. His "opsec concerns" are merely temper tantrums because he doesn't like something about me. User pages are visible to search engines, but the archives are not. He blanked his userpage, so it's not visible any more. While you may disagree with OPSEC concerns, he is right that disclosing that much information is not in compliance. He won't be blanking your page again, but you may want to either refactor the bio page or delink it while you are deployed. You also might want to have a talk with him (off-line) about how he encountered your information, since it really doesn't sound like he was looking for you. That wasn't entirely clear; it was obvious that they were aware of the user page, but not so obvious that they had seen the page which identified your specific unit. Sometimes OPSEC can be a bit extreme; I remember being frustrated at not saying where the aircraft carrier on which I was deployed was; it's rather hard to miss "97,000 tons of diplomacy", but OPSEC was OPSEC. Article on Vieques

My friend Bob, I read the article, as a matter of fact someone else had sent me the same one. I for one believe what is being said. Anyone who has read the story of that island will read a story of horror and abuse by the United States (our country) on that poor island and it's people. We tend to look and criticize the abuses and violations of human rights of other countries, but when it comes to looking at our own back yard we tend to look the other way because we are the "almighty" ones who could do no wrong. We have to clean our own house before we can tell others to clean theirs.

1. Puerto Ricans have been the subject of human experimentation's for sometime now. In the late 1930s, Dr. Cornelius Rhodes injected Puerto Rican patients with cancer cells, Rhodes wrote:

"the Porto Ricans (sic) are beyond doubt the dirtiest, laziest, most degenerate and thievish race of men ever inhabiting this sphere. It makes you sick to inhabit the same island with them..What the island needs is not public health work, but a tidal wave or something to totally exterminate the population..I have done my best to further the process of extermination by killing off eight and transplanting cancer into several more..The matter of consideration for the patients' welfare plays no role here - in fact, all physicians take delight in the abuse and torture.."

2. Beginning in the years following WW I, a program was initiated by the United States government, the medical community and the local government of Puerto Rico, to name a few, which resulted in the unprecedented sterilization of 1/3 of the female population by 1965, and the continued use of sterilization on a broad scale by Puerto Rican women as a form of birth control. The real reasons behind the sterilization campaigns were not justified at all. One of the reasons was that Puerto Rico was a U.S. colony, so there was still the idea of Manifest Destiny. The United States felt that they could do whatever they wanted to the Puerto Ricans because they were inferior.

3. What about Agent Orange? First introduced in 1946 in the agricultural farms of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Agent Orange tested by the US military in El Yunque National Rain Forrest and Vieques before being used in Vietnam. The list goes on and on. Posting your real world info

This is an unfortuante fact of this site, but we sadly have some editors who are extremely anti-Amrican and very much anti-U.S. military. If that is indeed your real name on the front page, I would recommend taking it off and asking an administrator to purge it from edit histories. Having your real name invites identity theft and also encourages people with a beef against the U.S. military to possibly try and get you in trouble. When I had more personal info about me on this site (including a picture) I deployed to the Middle East and it went from an occassional crack against the Navy (being called a squid) to an outright assault on my family. I had threatening e-mails, comments made about my wife, attempts to contact my real world unit CO in the Middle East, and in the ultimate extreme of another user pretty much going crazy, a criminal charge was filed against me at a police station in England (it was obviously thrown out since I was 7000 miles away in the Middle East). Anyway, you just never know. Stumple across the wrong person on this website and you could be in for some very serious problems. This also ties into our anti-terrorism training about posting real world info about military members on the web (although that mainly applies to deployments, troop movements, etc). Anyway, just some advice here from an O-4 with 14 years in. I'd take all your personal stuff off the site like your name, etc. Saying your a Marine is fine, but drawing attention to it isnt a good idea. No, I am not really interested in joining WikiProject Military History, because there is little I could add there. It seems that editors on that project are really interested in making things better, and also really helpful to people who have military articles but for which those are not their primary focus (such as me). Thank you all for your help and I will ask you for it soon again, but I don't think I could be useful to your project as a member.

To remove any doubt, I am not the Simon Trew, the military historian from Sandhurst. But I am Simon Trew. We very occasionally get confused because I worked for British Aerospace Defence for many years, but it is not common. I only say so because if anywhere there will be confusion it will be at Military History, and the fact that I am translating central European articles (one was marked as Balkan, another as German, both of which are entirely wrong) probably does not help because that is his speciality. It is my birthname and I and am quite entitled to it, as is he. I come here with clean hands using my real name.

It is very rare to get us confused, but I say so here so that on a search etc it is quite clear,

I am quite happy to do translation, yeah, that is fine. With military it can be tricky because of the jargon (as every specialist field has), though I have a slight advantage having worked for the military for many a year. If you look around I think you will find my translations are usually very well accepted as faithful translations. But that is as much as I can do. Once translated, it is for others then to check and make better. I will wikify and add sources and make it into EN:WP style, but I don't go to the sources, I just translate, and then it is someone else's job, assuming I have a good translation. I can do French, Spanish, Hungarian, and some Latin and ancient Greek and a little Arabic. So ask away but no promises, OK? Si Trew (talk) 17:30, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

I've also put some battle maps into English on Commons, as derivative works. This can be a lot of work not so much to delete the original captions but to fill in the detail underneath. It takes a lot of time to do that, but once done and thrown into SVG, it means you can change the labels for a particular language without too much effort. I try to make the labels meaningful, for example at File:Kingdom of Hungary counties-2.svg all of the counties now have labels that are the counties' names, I have separated the borders and counties into separate layers, and the water (currently only Lake Balaton), the text is awful I must sort that out, I made Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary the coordinates are wrong but it is a start, in short, I don't do things by halves. You will notice for example I always document my templates and they have testcases. I also test them to fail: what happens when you pass a bad parameter? It barfs and tells you so. This template doesn't because it is transcluded ina perverse way from [[tly|Location map}} but I would if I could. If you look at the templates under Category:Hungary geographical name conversion templates, for example, you will see they are all documented with testcases, some of which fail. I tend to test three cases for failure: missing parameter, empty parameter, and bad parameter. In short, I know my stuff.

Being a linguist and a software engineer is bloody hard work sometimes, but I will use that talent as best I can at Wikipedia, which I immensely enjoy making better. I don't mind if I am wrong, and I often am, if people play nice, like the MilHist lot seem to. I have got a lot of help from you and from another editor, and of course on the military history scale these are quite minor. But you all helped me al the same. And I really appreciate that.

That is all in need. I didn't mean for the fascist to get on the Iowo Jima Flag case. I believed that the Iconic Image of the Flag Raising was within reason and since it has never been questioned that it would serve as an example, that's all. • I understand what your saying. I too am feed up with these deletionists who have never made any positive contributions to Wikipedia and whose only enjoyment in life is to destroy what others have created. I have had to put up with so much crap with the AfD last month and now with a someone who has nominated images by the masses for deletion, that I'm having second thoughts about making any more contributions. 21:19, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
