editPlease note that a person does not go directly in Category:Canadian musicians if they're already in a subcategory such as Category:Canadian jazz guitarists or "Musicians from any individual city or province within Canada". The main category is meant to be empty of individual articles, with all musicians filtered down into more specific subcategories instead of sitting in the generic one. Thanks. - Probably my fault! I have no idea what I am doing with catagories but it asks for them to be filled in when accepting an Article For Creation. Sorry! ツStacey (talk) 18:28, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
- Nope, definitely me and my confusion on this point. I now understand that the person goes into the lowest sub category that they fit in to. Question though - What happens if they belong in two or more of the lowest sub categories? Like in this case when they're an arranger, composer, guitarist etc. As a general comment, it seems to me that the categories are really messed up when they combine instrument, nationality and genre.Bugcrusher (talk) 20:13, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
- A person can be in all of the subcategories that are appropriate — if he's an arranger, composer and guitarist, then he can be in the categories for all of those three things. What we don't do is "subcategory-parent" categorization — for example, he wouldn't go in Category:Canadian guitarists simultaneously with Category:Guitarists, or Category:Canadian composers simultaneously with Category:Composers, or either of those categories simultaneously with Category:Canadian musicians. Since the second category in each of those pairs is a more general category for the same characteristic as the first one, categorizing that way would just be needless duplication. But it's perfectly okay to put him in both Category:Canadian guitarists and Category:Canadian composers — since guitarist and composer are two different things, neither of those categories is a "parent" to the other one and they're not duplicating each other.
