My User Page
editThanks for every time you have reverted the repeated vandalism on my user page. It is most appreciated, since it is usually during my off-Wiki hours. Question
editAs of right now, the NWT is the only province or territory in Canada that doesn't have occupational subcategories within Category:Canadian musicians by province or territory or Category:Canadian writers by province or territory, but I did a cursory run through Category:People from Northwest Territories and didn't find anyone who could be filed in either new category if I were to create them. Do you know offhand of any NWT writers or musicians who already have articles? One for each would be great...two, three or four would be even better. Bearcat (talk) 22:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

John Phillip Sousa Junior High School
editHi, thanks for responding about my request to speedy-delete John Phillip Sousa Junior High School, although you declined to execute it. I wonder if you could explain to me how it helps to have the redirect from incorrect spelling available. I have never understood why incorrect spellings are left as redirects. If I am correct, the redirect serves no purpose for someone who types in a search for the miss-spelled name. If the redirect is not there, a person's search will find their way to the correct spelling anyhow, as the first suggested option. Having the redirect, however, serves to confirm to them, seemingly, that the miss-spelling is valid, which is not a good thing. Also, for anyone editing a wikilink, I would think it is better to show them a red-link so they get the feedback that it is a miss-spelling, also. Perhaps I am not understanding something here, about how redirects help or hurt. If you could clarify for me, I would appreciate it. If not, or otherwise, have a nice day anyhow. :) doncram (talk) 03:42, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Kayaking & Kayak reverted?
editHi! Just wondering why you reverted the inclusion of KayakPaddling.net to Kayaking-page & Kayak-page? But no place for a kayaking tutorial?

Move the search box directly beneath the puzzle globe
editJust curious but why would it be hard for the eldery? Though I must say that I found the comment along with the featured article rather funny. Thanks for the chuckle. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 05:23, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- You're welcome for the chuckle ;-) - it seems to me that older people have a harder time looking at a web page, breaking it down, and identifying the part of the page that they actually want to use. By placing the search box in a much more visible location, it should make it easier for the elderly to find it. It's also easier for people who read more slowly and blind people who have to use screen readers. —Remember the dot (talk) 03:59, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
deletion of John A Macdonald material
editMassive deletion of John A Macdonald material
editI'm wondering if you deleted about half the article on John A Macdonald on May 21/08 at 21:22. The sections on his early life, professional career and personal life have been deleted with no reason given. The section on reference books has been pretty well gutted as well. If you are responsible for this, I'm wondering why you did it. I contributed a lot to this entry, but most of that material is gone. I've left a note complaining about the deletions on the article discussion page. Bwark (talk) 19:24, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Well it worked. It would cheapen the Thumbs Up Award (if that is possible?) by awarding you two in 20 minutes or so, but your approach has definitely got me interested. Of course my bass players (for example) would be Hannes Kvaran and Dave Stanton and currently Roger Chilton, so not quite as interesting. Still . . . . . . . .................. maybe? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 20:54, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well I suspect that every place I've lived has an article already, thus will be in blue, but my bass players, while being fine musicians will probably remain red for a while - unless being the third hippie to move into Northern NM it note worthy? I've had a lot more important stuff (opinion) deleted to mess with that. Actually I am taking a longish wikisulk and am not yet ready to generate another User Page for myself. Help me
editHello CambridgeBayWeather, I am writing to you since you were kind enough to welcome me to the world of wikipedia and I am hoping that you could help me out. I have got myself into a conflict and it has got to the stage where a user who I now believe is a troll has made some personal attacks against myself, including adding my personal information onto talk pages without my consent (which of course they vehemently deny). Would it be possible for you to look at the page Talk:Sumo#Sumo in the arts and assess the situation and advise me on the appropriate action I should take. I am quite upset about the situation which is why I am contacting you. Thank you, Jdrewitt (talk) 22:01, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Specifically, they added my personal name here, which they then claimed was a quote from a film, I would say it is a bit too coincidental for that though. With that information and my user name they somebody could quite easily find information about my real identity on the web (It is archived on my user page history but I took it off since I decided it wasn't a good idea to have it there). Somebody else has sorted out the talk:Sumo page now and removed the personal attacks, which is a good thing, so I will take it off my watch list and stay out of it. I shouldn't have got involved! Thanks. Jdrewitt (talk) 07:45, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

User page
editI just saw the banner on your user page yesterday while on a computer that hadn't upgraded to IE7. You might also want to add a bit about IE7 having problems showing the pages correctly as well. Quite often if an image is placed below an infobox in the opening there will be a large amount of whitespace seen with either version of IE. Sometimes the amount of whitespace is large enough to ensure that the text does not appear on the screen without scrolling down (17 in monitor).
By the way Firefox has a couple of minor problems. Unlike IE Firefox correctly formats the {{reflist|2}}. Now if that is combined with a bare http references, it causes this, even on a 19 in monitor, but it's an easy fix by using [] and a title. This is the only other time I've seen Firefox have trouble with a page, caused by putting the images in a table, but I suspect that no browser can cope with that properly. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 17:07, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- Firefox has some other rendering problems as well, for example failure to support inline-block which Internet Explorer has supported pretty much forever. It also has some quite nasty memory leaks. Firefox 3 resolves these issues (although the minor ones you brought up are still there), so once FF3 is officially released, I will have a solid basis for telling people to ditch IE altogether. I still think Firefox 2 is overall better than IE7, but it's a harder sell.
- By the way, I haven't recommended Opera because its user interface has a scroll button quirk that annoys me and it doesn't come with spell check. But its standards-compliance is great! —Remember the dot (talk) 00:24, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

editHi Cambridge,
about Fleur de lis: thanks, of course you are right, sorry.
Since I'm pretty new to Wikipedia, maybe you can advise me on something? I noticed that "Funky" redirects to "Taco Bell". There is probably some reference that I just don't understand, but it may as well simply be vandalism (I do seem to sense a joke there somewhere, and I noticed that the Taco Bell article itself is locked). I didn't want to delete the redirect as maybe I'm just missing something and don't want to do damage.

white tiger infant mortality
editSomeone has again added this nonsense to the white tiger article that they have an 80% infant mortality. This idea seems to have it's origins in an article written by Dr. Dan Laughlin, titled The White Tiger Fraud, which appears on the Big Cat Rescue website. Dr. Dan Laughlin stole five white tiger cubs in 1984 and spent a year in prison and six months in a half way house because of this. Two of the cubs died. I mentioned the incident without mentioning him by name in the article, and I removed the article itself from the bibliography. The article is extremely inaccurate. It might be that someone from Big Cat Rescue keeps adding it to the bibliography. The infant mortality rate for white tigers is no higher than it is for normal orange tigers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LagunaBeachCA (talk • contribs) 15:46, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
white tiger infant mortality
editYou put back what I removed-the nonsennse about the 80% infant mortality rate-and you put The White Tiger Fraud back into the sources. Why? Here is my source for Dr. Dan Laughlin's criminal histoty: "Verdict Upheld In Cubs Case" The Baton Rouge Advocate, Nov. 16, 1986 and also http://bulk.resource.org/courts.gov/c/old/F2/804.F2d.-3012html It appears that Big Cat Rescue may not be a real sanctuary. discussion
editThis bizarre message was left in the discussion section of the white tiger article. "The white tiger has been inbred by capitalist pigs beyond all hope. Most are born with birth defects and never reach adulthood. There's a reason why you don't reproduce with your family, and the only way to ensure more cubs zoos inbreed them constantly. The cruelty needs to stop and I feel this wiki is part of the problem, not even taking the issue seriously." This person does'nt have a clue about what he or she is talking about. I traced it to the office of the President of the University of California. 169.231.8.69 I thought it might be the same person who inserted the nonsense about the 80% infant mortality. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LagunaBeachCA (talk • contribs) 14:43, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

National parks
editI noticed this earlier and wondered about the nearest city. After looking at Template:Infobox Protected area and Template talk:Infobox Protected area#Change "Nearest city" to "Nearest community"? it would appear that it doesn't have to be the nearest city. For example, Wood Buffalo National Park has Fort Smith, Northwest Territories (a town) rather than Yellowknife which is the closest city. Fort Smith is the logical choice as it is both the headquarters for the park and the main access point. Another example is Quttinirpaaq National Park, which I just changed from the Eureka, Nunavut weather station to Resolute, Nunavut, the main access point. Using the largest city in that would give Nuuk in Greenland rather than anywhere in Canada, as it's a few kilometres closer than Iqaluit. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 17:56, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Alan, I knew that some templates used the nearest largest community rather than city. I reverted the Banff edit because Calgary is definitely the nearest city and Banff is actually within the park rather than "near" the park. Picky I guess, but it was a judgment call. Hope all is well. Cheers. - BC (talk) 18:16, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

NWT Dene and wider meaning of Dene
editYo. I've avoided messing with the Dene article partly because additions I know of will take a bit of citation/research to write up properly and it's a delicate matter in general messing around with ethno pages; I'm tied in knots with various BC peoples' articles enough as it is ;-). You're one of the actual NWT Wikipedians (you are in Cambridge Bay, right?) and so have a better take on locally-correct content up that way, so I'm putting this in front of you and am seeking edits/input. What it's about is that the non-NWT Athapaskan peoples can/are collectively also referred to as Dene, according to a shifting spectrum of direct identification or let's call it macro-identification; very far northern BC and AB etc peoples are classed as Dene, on the one hand, and a broader definition of Dene includes peoples such as the Tsilhqot'in and Dakelh/Babine/Wet'suwet'en and also the Navajo, Tsuut'ina etc. If you look at List of First Nations in British Columbia you'll see that a number of as-=yet-unwritten FN govt/etc articles are ethnically Dene, i.e. self-identified as such (not just including those with territories that spill over the NWT boundary, or rather arae partitioned by Canadian-defined boundaries); so those are in the main group, vs the Carrier/Tsilhqot'in/Tahltan who are in the "macro" grouping. One of the bits of research/citation that's out there was an article in the Vancouver Sun -a feature, multi-page one, maybe by Stephen Hume but he's not their only FN culture/historical writer - that talked about how the elders of the Tsilhqot'in et al. all consider themselves to be part of "the great Dene Nation" and it's true enough that the -'tin ending, like the -tan ending and -tina and the Duune- part of Dunne-za are all really teh same word as different dialect variants; likewise Dineh (Navajo) and so on. What I'm getting at is how to write, and what to title, the broader article, or how to add its definition to this article without upsetting the applecart and/or indigenous sensitivities. Dene could use other cats for BC/YT/AB etc but until its content reflects why I've held off adding them; likewise adding CAtegory:Dene too liberally. There's also the matter of Denendeh, which has a wider meaning beyond its use as a synonym for the NWT (more or less, or is it official?). During the Spicer and Charest Commissions in the wake of Oka the name Denendeh surfaced and there was some worry it inferred an "irredentist" pan-Dene territory ("incipient state") that theoretically could have incluced most of northern BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; interesting concept but largely shelved, except as a cultural sphere. I'm sorry I don't have the citation/article specifics; I see/read so much that I don't keep articles or notes, and often the usefulness of an article or its relevance here I only get to long after the physical/temporal fact of such materials. ;-) Sorry for hte long post, I'm typically long-winded, and this is a somewhat complicated issue.Skookum1 (talk) 13:03, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

editThank you for welcoming me to Wikipedia. I will continue to make helpful contributions to music pages.
On a serious note, I opened up my account earlier and got the "You have new messages" banner. I opened it up and found out that my page was vandalized with "EPIC FAIL" all over it. Thank you for fixing it and I will tell RJaguar3 thanks also. I wanted to reach both of you earlier, but your page was protected.
Sincerely, --Greg D. Barnes (talk) 01:30, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

- Oh, my god. I am SO SORRY!!! I must have clicked the wrong diff after I reverted that vandal. I'm so used to Huggle where it won't let you report established uses. God, I can't express to you what I'm feeling now. Dude, I am SO SORRY!!! J.delanoygabsadds 00:41, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind words. That is the first time I have done something like that, and I was not sure what would result from it. J.delanoygabsadds 00:57, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- It gets added here and we move on! KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 01:00, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

editYou got the little bastard before I could :-D EPIC WIN! He can be blocked! ScarianCall me Pat! 21:47, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- Since it's confirmed that the range is too big to block, all user talks of affected individuals should be sprotected for the short term, at least. Enigma message 23:49, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- Update: Ryan Poss. range blocked the whole lot for an hour. ScarianCall me Pat! 00:17, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'll leave it unprotected for now but if it gets out of hand after the block expires then just protect it. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 00:36, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
