DYK for The Dingo Principle
editOn 12 February 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article The Dingo Principle, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that sketches on the television comedy series The Dingo Principle resulted in the expulsion of two Australian diplomats from Iran, and a letter of complaint from the Soviet embassy in Canberra? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Dingo Principle. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Elizabeth Chifley
editHi Canley. After noticing your contribution to the Joseph Potaski page with the reference sourced from the NLA, I went and had a look at your user page. Given your listed interests I thought I would let you know (that as a very new Wiki person) I have been doing some very preliminary work on an article about Elizabeth Chifley - wife of the PM Ben Chifley. It is in response to entry made sometime ago on the To Do List. Probably inappropriately - I have put some very sketchy info in my sandbox - if you want to take a look and perhaps start an article?? --PinkAechFas (talk) 05:55, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi Canley Thanks for the message and your interest in the article. I'm very new to Wiki and what I have put together on Elizabeth Chifley is very preliminary. My sandbox is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:PinkAechFas/sandbox. Regards --PinkAechFas (talk) 21:09, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

There are some problems with the graphs you updated
editHi. You recently did some work on the graphs for the article Opinion polling for the Australian federal election, 2013. Unfortunately there are some problems. Please take a look at the talk page of the article. I also noticed that you removed the tags from the graphs without explanation. Somedifferentstuff (talk) 10:21, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your effort on the graphs. Somedifferentstuff (talk) 11:15, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Dick Stabile article
editHi. In February 2011, you put a {{disputed}} tag on the Dick Stabile article. However, no details regarding the possible problem were ever added to the article's talk page. Is the accuracy of this article still in question? If so, can you elaborate on the talk page? If not, can the tag be removed now? — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 16:18, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- Sure, I have removed the tag. I didn't remember the article or why I would have added the tag, but looking at it is seems an anonymous user had added a line "NB: There are many inaccurate statements in the text above." in May 2010, so I replaced the line with a disputed tag. The article certainly needs better referencing anyway, there is one book referencing the line "Contrary to popular opinion..." but nothing else. --Canley (talk) 20:15, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing my typo.
editHi, Thanks for fixing my error in the Frank McGuire (Australian politician) article. I have no real idea how I came to type Carlton, I'm very aware that Eddie is president of Collingwood, not Carlton. My only explanation is that I am still haunted by the fact that Carlton tipped my team (Tigers) out of the finals! Cheers Melbourne3163 (talk) 04:49, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

editThanks for that! A bit disturbing though that only one editor (you) had anything to contribute on a by-election until 2 days before it is to be held. Disappointing wiki times I guess. Timeshift (talk) 02:15, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
- I know! Used to be that by-election articles were created the minute an MP resigned, before the writs were even issued. I went to Wikipedia to swot up on the by-election and found there was no article. Thanks for the expansion, great work!--Canley (talk) 10:57, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
- Well wadda ya know... Timeshift (talk) 10:38, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
While you're technically correct with the roundings, note that if we applied this more generally, the TPP would be 55.2/44.7 (see NSWEC result page), and that would just look plain awkward and we don't have roundings like 55.2/44.7 on ozpol articles. I don't strongly disagree with your edit however. Timeshift (talk) 00:33, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
- I'm a bit confused: I agree it should be consistent in the articles here, but it looks like that awkward NSWEC TPP figure is because they are truncating the decimal to one place (44.787 -> 44.7) rather than rounding up (44.787 -> 44.8)—I thought what I did to the turnout change figure was the opposite of that, rounding 11.38 up to 11.4 instead of truncating to 11.3. --Canley (talk) 03:45, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

2013 federal election results
editHi Canley. Thanks for all the great work that you're doing re the results from the federal election. I'm wondering, when you update each divisional page, would you please mind attending to the following:
- Updating number of electors in the infobox
- Adding a reference to where you sourced the results
- Changing tense, where appropriate, to the sitting member/retiring member, election outcome from candidates.
Thanks. I hope that makes sense. I'm starting with Banks and trying to do a catch up to you. But it would help me if you actioned these going forward from wherever you are up to at present. Cheers. Rangasyd (talk) 10:34, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
- I'm concentrating on fixing up the results tables first, I have added a reference tag to the AEC VTR from now on. I didn't do it originally as the URL is going to change from vtr to results, but it will need to be added or updated anyway, so I've included the link and the date last updated. I had been updating the enrolment in the info box for all the other states but had not done so for NSW, intending to go back later and do it. I will go back and do any you haven't done when I finish checking the tables. --Canley (talk) 12:35, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

House & Senate
editWell done on House of Representatives results for the Australian federal election, 2013, do you want to do or are you doing Senate results for the Australian federal election, 2013? Timeshift (talk) 01:23, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
- You might want to check your generation tools and go over what you've done... not sure how this happened. Timeshift (talk) 23:48, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yikes, I think I know what that is, a manual transcription error. I will rerun and check all the tables today. -Canley (talk) 00:23, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
Are you going to add the microparties/remove others for the national result table in the Senate article? Timeshift (talk) 23:19, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I am doing it right now actually! Just checking the Coalition seat changes in the five variations, I'll pop it up in about 20 minutes. --Canley (talk) 23:34, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Coalition unmerged in national Senate results..? Timeshift (talk) 06:56, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Per Senate results for the Australian federal election, 2010#Australia... Timeshift (talk) 21:49, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
When Crook went in to the Coalition it kind of muted the whole point. Lib/Nat Coalition got lumped in to one group for 2010 Senate because it looked too confusing to have individual and group tickets for Lib, Nat, LNP, and CLP. I think we should still group them together in the Senate to save the mess, and then break them down as already done in state-by-state results. Timeshift (talk) 23:20, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- Crook never went into the Coalition, only into the Nationals. He explicitly sat in the National party room, but not the Coalition one. I agree that the Coalition should be grouped much like 2010 normally, though. Not sure how to deal with the WA and SA Nats, but federally I think it's most sensible to include them with the federal Nats since that's how they're registered. Frickeg (talk) 00:37, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
- Yep. Timeshift (talk) 00:45, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
- OK, so I think we have to go all in here, and merge the Liberal/National votes as far back as the Senate results go. For one, if the makeup or definition of the Coalition changes from election to election, does that make the swing invalid? I guess the swing can be calculated as if they were merged even if they are not in the table. Secondly, I see this National Senate table as kind of like the House of Reps two-party-preferred count—no real effect electorally, but useful or interesting to look at national shifts—and the AEC does includes all the Nationals and Liberals from all states in the 2PP count. I think there's two different issues, how a sitting member votes and is bound by Coalition solidarity, and how votes are counted and aggregated electorally—so I don't think Cook's statements and decisions should affect how election results are displayed. Any thoughts or objections? I will merge this table and calculate the swing based on all Lib/Nat parties in 2010... we can discuss further if this needs to be retrospectively edited for previous years. --Canley (talk) 02:01, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
- I hadn't actually looked at the 2010 page, and now that I do, I don't like the way it's done there either. I'd much prefer it to be done along the lines of the HoR pages - that is, a Coalition heading, followed by totals for joint Coalition, individual Liberal tickets, and individual National tickets (and LNP and CLP). (As an aside - I kind of think a Coalition total should be included in both tables too, perhaps in italics so that it doesn't count towards the total. It seems like it would be useful for the swing figure if nothing else.) Frickeg (talk) 02:22, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, I like that idea—maybe we can have it both ways... like the National Party! :) --Canley (talk) 02:32, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

They're as final as they're gonna get excluding the WA Senate fracas. Out of curiosity tell me, if you know how it happened, about the WA LH 2PP swing... it was a significant difference to what was in the article, but all the other states' 2pp swings were correct to the decimal. Election box
editCould you show me an example of where the coding was broken? I checked numerous examples and couldn't find a version that had gone wrong. Thanks, Number 57 07:52, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
- Odd. Could you give me a link to a page where the colours disappeared. In theory, changing to Wikitable class shouldn't make that happen. The discussion you spotted is something completely different - it's for overall results tables, not single constituency ones, and the change I made wasn't related to that discussion. Cheers, Number 57 12:32, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
- I worked it out - it was because {{Election box candidate AU party}} used "bgcolour" instead of "background-color". Some of the other subtemplates failed to show the colour because they used "/" instead of "|" in the code. {{Election box candidate with party link}} was not affected by this problem (it was used on the pages I checked when making the change in the first place). Hopefully all is well now. Cheers, Number 57 18:49, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Sir Richard Paget, 2nd Baronet
editOn 14 January 2014, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Sir Richard Paget, 2nd Baronet, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Sir Richard Paget encouraged his daughter to fall from the open platform of a London bus, to demonstrate his theory that a person could do so safely due to air currents? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sir Richard Paget, 2nd Baronet. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
Good work with the SA electoral district maps!

editI've realised I only just scratched the surface. Are you able to go over the tables again? Timeshift (talk) 02:05, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- Sure, I will check them all now. In that case the swing figure is the correct one (2.11) as it is from the AEC data [3], the 2.12 figure was from the ABC's results [4] (which as you'll see from the talk page was not accurate). --Canley (talk) 02:31, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks :) Timeshift (talk) 02:33, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- OK, I've re-checked all the tables: ACT was very wrong, so you're right, you just scratched the surface with that one—the ABC had omitted the Independent candidate Emmanuel Ezekiel-Hart entirely (518 votes) which was what threw those percentages out. The only other discrepancy was the Coalition percentage in NSW was off by 0.01%. --Canley (talk) 03:20, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

When you do the 2014 SA maps...
editWould it be possible to include the names of the districts inside the boundaries? I tried updating on my computer these but without names to indicate what's what, it's just a sea of red blue and grey and not really helpful for the election article. They're fine for seat articles though, the intended purpose of pointing out where the seat is works fine :) Timeshift (talk) 01:48, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
- Sure thing! I did the map colouring last night, but I agree it needs the district names so I didn't upload them, I'll add the names tonight. I'll do them manually because although the GIS program I'm using has an option to display the name, they are such weird shapes and sizes that they all jumble together. --Canley (talk) 02:01, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! Timeshift (talk) 02:07, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
- Did you find the time to have a look? I increasingly don't like the 2010 boundaries/2014 results images I uploaded as it's incorrect, but no maps at all is even worse hehe :) Timeshift (talk) 00:48, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- How about I upload the coloured maps which are ready now, then when I've added the names replace with the named version? (should be later today) And shall I overwrite your maps or just upload to different files/names? --Canley (talk) 01:02, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- I think the old boundary images with names is more helpful than the new boundary images without names, but that's just me. Whenever you can get to it. Feel free to upload over the top of Metro/Rural14.PNG. Timeshift (talk) 01:10, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- I've done the maps with the names, it didn't take as long as I thought. Can you have a look and let me know if you spot any errors (wrong party colour, wrong name, etc.). I uploaded them to Commons and changed the thumbnail reference. If you want I can delete the old ones from Wikipedia, up to you... --Canley (talk) 03:00, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Did you get the candidate names from an exported list? Just wondering where Hutn rather than Hurn came from, and Jasmin (coincidentally from the same seat). Also Lucy. Also not sure where Ken Ryan was at all in this election. There's more but i'll stop linking :) Also just a heads up, at some point I began making corrections to the articles only rather than articles and your draft page. Timeshift (talk) 07:53, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- When the candidate nominations closed, there was a politics/psephology site that posted an Excel file with a list of candidates, and various pivot tables analysing the list by gender, "winnability", party and so on. So I think that was where I imported the list from as it looks definitive, but I later noticed there were 18 candidates missing... however I didn't notice the spelling errors and the mysterious Mr Ryan! I can't even find or remember which site I got the original file from now... Sorry about that anyway, I could have checked the names against the scraping of the ECSA site but they were in some weird format so I just went with what I had (which was fairly wrong in several places). --Canley (talk) 10:34, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Victoria had a federal redistribution as well so I should redo those as well I guess. Anyway, I'll have a look tonight and work on it soon. --Canley (talk) 03:59, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Mike Baird
editYou mention "education field" in your edit on Mike Baird but I can't see what you have added. I'd like to see alma mater removed from the info box and his school added. Can you help? Castlemate (talk) 07:48, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, I was mistaken, that field is in the Infobox Person template, but not officeholder. I added the field, then saw it wasn't part of the template in the preview, so I removed it, however when I resubmitted, my browser helpfully autofilled the edit comment field with the previous comment which mentioned the education field. --Canley (talk) 08:45, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Australian road maps
editHi Canley. I have seen that you've made and uploaded a couple of maps for roads in Australia. That's great, and there's definitely plenty of work to do. However, I think they could be better if they included the rest of the (major) road network, to show the selected roads in context. Also, WikiProject Australian Roads has some (draft) map standards, which have been used to create maps for our FAs, GAs, and A-class articles (as well as others). It would be nice if, when new maps are created, they could be in the same or very similar style so that eventually, there could be a consistent reader experience. Finally, you don't say on the file pages where you sourced your data. Most data is either fully copyrighted (for example, some state government website) or released under a free licence requiring attribution (eg Geoscience Australia GIS data) or attribution and sharing-alike (eg KML files on Wikipedia). I'm not trying accuse you of anything, but if include your sources, we can verify that everything is above-board, and not in violation of any copyright or free licence terms.
Sorry if this comes across as a bit negative – your maps are definitely a huge improvement over no maps at all, and I really do appreciate your effort, so here are some cookies to enjoy! If you have any questions or want any help, you can post at the WT:AURD talk page, or at mine. Thanks, Evad37 [talk] 15:39, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

- Thanks for the tips. It was a bit of an experiment really, a by-product of something else I was working on so I just uploaded the Great Alpine one as there was no map. I did look for some guidelines on map style on the project page but didn't find them (I found them now, I was looking for "maps" not "resources"). I can redo them in that standard style pretty easily. I have added the source attribution—sorry, I thought I had done it but I had typed them out but not pasted them in—they were Vicmaps Lite data released as CC BY 3.0 AU in 2010, I don't think the data is still available but the release page is still on the data.vic.gov.au site. --Canley (talk) 23:39, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Mike Baird (politician) article
editHello, I'm wondering why you removed the date caption from beneath the photo on the Mike Baird (politician) article? Having the date there seems to be a helpful thing, it's not intrusive and as the years go by it can be helpful to quickly see how old the photo is. I'm not 'having a go' at you, I'm just curious as to why you would remove it. Your reply would be appreciated. Thanks. Melbourne3163 (talk) 23:35, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- I was the one that removed it, and it's because that sort of caption is not helpful. If people on wikipedia want that sort of information on the photo they can click on it, but by default we do not have date taken captions under every or any politician's photo. It doesn't add anything substantially meaningful to the article. Timeshift (talk) 23:38, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for confusing the user names and thanks for your quick reply. Cheers. Melbourne3163 (talk) 00:04, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
I've done a quick fix in the meantime, but when you have the time can you re-do them? Timeshift (talk) 07:45, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- For Waite? Ha ha, wow, amazing! OK, I've recoloured Waite in both maps. --Canley (talk) 08:40, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Not to be a bother, but why would we want Waite re-coloured? It was won by the Liberals at the last election. Hamilton-Smith's independence doesn't change that; it's still a "Liberal" seat for the purposes of the maps, surely. Frickeg (talk) 09:07, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- What Frickeg said! The Drover's Wife (talk) 13:16, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- No, it's now a seat represented by an independent MP! Certainly the 2014 article should and does remain as-is, but the 2018 article should have the maps coloured as per current MP affiliation. Timeshift (talk) 00:35, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Completely disagree, I'm afraid. If Hamilton-Smith wins it at the next election, it will be an independent gain. It's represented by an independent MP, yes, but it was won by the Liberal Party and remains a Liberal seat. Frickeg (talk) 00:46, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- I guess we agree to disagree. What about the pendulum, why is that different? Timeshift (talk) 00:54, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- I disagree with the pendulum too. In my opinion Waite should be listed in the Liberal column, but with Hamilton-Smith only coloured independent. I find this similar to redistributions. For example, should pre-election SA maps have been colouring Bright as Liberal (notionally) or as Labor (because it was held by Fox)? I would say as Liberal, and that the pendulums should list it as Liberal too. It's about how the relevant area voted at the last election. Not a single person in Waite cast a vote for an independent at the last election, so I think it's misleading to be colouring the map as though they did. Frickeg (talk) 03:30, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Well in regards to the pendulum, we have much precedent in the federal sphere. I disagree with redistributions. If a seat were to become notionally Liberal and with that meant it was then held by a Liberal MP, i'd agree with you. But the MP would still be Labor so it should still be coloured as Labor. It's not misleading when the 2014 page remains as-is. And the 2018 page has an added text bit in the pendulum stating MHS became an independent, so that's not misleading either. I'm happy to continue discussion (if you wish) but perhaps we should leave Canley's talkpage? Timeshift (talk) 03:34, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, quite. Apologies for clogging up the talk page. Raised here. Frickeg (talk) 01:16, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

How much do you like creating maps? Maps at South Australian state election, 2018#2016 draft redistribution need replacing with a map created from scratch, but you might not wish to until all is final. Personally I think such a significant proposed redistribution needs as much attention and exposure as possible. Timeshift (talk) 07:28, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
- It's hard to do maps without geodata like Shapefiles. Also I'm a bit worried about the legalities of using the boundary commission report so directly as it seems unambiguously copyrighted. It might take a bit longer after they are gazetted, but data.gov.au seems to update the PSMA data under a CC-BY licence quite regularly. --Canley (talk) 06:54, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Would you be willing to do historical SA maps?
editI've come across boundaries for SA state going back to 1993 here (PDF) and back to 1997 here (KML). Would you be willing to do 1993 through to 2010 with your application as you did for 2014? Right now, 1993, 97, 02 articles use 2006 boundaries. Would be SO happy if you did, definately barnstar territory! :D Timeshift (talk) 02:28, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'll see what I can do when I have some time—the ABC ones aren't vector boundaries so could be tricky, KML should be OK though. --Canley (talk) 23:17, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject Elections and Referendums article tagging
editHi Canley. Sorry to have to post directly on your talk page, but you may have noticed (on the WP:Elections and referendums talk page) that I am trying to get all the election and referendum articles tagged for the project. Unfortunately this is not making any progress, as people are claiming there is no consensus to do this, as no-one has responded on the Project talk page. Could you possibly comment on the proposal at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Elections and Referendums#Bot to tag articles for the WikiProject, as I'm getting rather frustrated by the attitude of the people at WP:BTR. Heidi Victoria censorship
editHi.
Please stop censoring the page for Heidi Victoria. Personal opinions are not welcome on WP, only facts. Please refrain from removing useful, cited information in future. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.202.37.66 (talk • contribs)
- There are at least three editors of good standing reverting these dubious and minor "controversies" you insist on adding, so it is hardly "personal opinions" or "censorship". Surely you can see that repeated assertion of "controversy", from an anon account, during an election campaign is going to be questioned and challenged. Feel free to discuss on Talk:Heidi Victoria if you wish to convince others of the necessity of including these "facts" rather than continuing to revert. --Canley (talk) 01:19, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi. Election campaign is irrelevant. The facts are published through reliable sources, and it's not your role to censor WP. Everything is useful information. I'm assuming you're being paid by the ALP or HV directly for this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.202.37.66 (talk • contribs)
- Ha ha ha, how ridiculous – why would the ALP pay anyone to censor, protect or sanitise an article about a Liberal MP? I would revert similar negative, yet utterly inconsequential, "controversy" sections for politicians of any party or side, and have done in the past. I think my edit history speaks for itself regarding my impartiality – can you say the same? Your edits appear to be focused on only two subjects: Heidi Victoria and Peter Sunde, is it too much to hope that your professed devotion to presenting "facts" will extend to other politicians, other parties or other biographical subjects? Please discuss and gain consensus for your edits at Talk:Heidi Victoria or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australian politics – you are on the wrong side of WP:BLP and other policies, and your relentless and singular focus on one person's biography appears quite suspicious and almost obsessive. As I said above, there are three long-standing editors reverting you, with an extremely broad range of edits and interests between them, so frankly your accusations of lack of neutrality, censorship and paid editing are laughable. --Canley (talk) 03:51, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Hate to say it Canley but you just showed your lack of professionalism and childish attitude. I agree with 14.202.37.66. Stop censoring WP, you're the aids that is infecting the internet. Also, he was obviously trolling you by mentioning ALP on a clearly liberal candidate page. Think before you type and feed the trolls. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.237.19.233 (talk • contribs)

Shepparton seat
editI happened to take a look at my first view of a 2014 Vic result and came across your edit... take a look at the 2CP figures you entered. Whoops! It would be a fluke that the first and only one i've looked at is the only one to have an issue. When you have time could you take a quick look at the results you've added to the other electorates? Timeshift (talk) 09:14, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- No, it's only that one. They were imported from the ABC, and matches the swing on Antony Green's page. I know that's not "the way we do things around here" (i.e. swing from 0 for a new party/independent) and I did notice it and mean to go back and adjust it, but I forgot as I made a major error with the turnout swings somehow so I had to fix all of them. But the TPPs all been very carefully checked (except for Shepparton). That was also the only non-classic seat I did I think, the Greens ones had already been done and I did from Mill Park onwards. --Canley (talk) 09:28, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the reply :) Timeshift (talk) 09:30, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

- I believe this comes from the notional Nat/ALP margin (it would've been counted in Shepparton in 2010). Frickeg (talk) 12:49, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Tense in 20XX in Australia articles
editHi and Happy New Year! I started editing these articles because the use of tense was inconsistent (mostly present, but some past). My reading of MOS:BIO#TENSE and WP:TENSE was that historical events should always be written in past tense, and although these articles are recent history, they are still historical events. However, if there is some other guideline for these kind of lists that I am unaware of, no problems. You are right, looking at the wider articles, most are in present tense (although, again, with plenty of inconsistencies!) It seems to be a much bigger issue than I thought at first, so I'm happy to leave it for now, but let me know if you think it's worth further discussion. Melcous (talk)

Those articles and the obituary report that Kent was employed as a police officer on 17 July in 1827, four days after the Carlisle City Police Force was established, and that he was on the force for "nineteen years", which makes it 1846.
It's also reported that he had worked as a watchman at Thomas Senhouse's dock warehouse in Mayport before he went to work for the City as a 'substantive Constable' (date not listed in this source). According to the obituary, he was appointed as 'the Mayor's sergeant' after his employment with the Carlisle City Police Force ended.
It's possible that his job as a policeman ended in 1844, but worked as the Mayor's sergeant until 1846 when he went to work for Messrs Joseph Robinson and Co., a company which constructed "the northern end of the Carlisle and Lancaster Railway", as a "very confidential servant, to whom Mr Robinson, the late James Thompson and Mark Thompson entrusted important work. For thirteen years he was employed in the signal-box on the south side of the Citadal Station, and this is still shown on the local railway plans as "Kent's box"." [The Carlisle Patriot, Friday, 23 July, 1886, pg 5]
I tried to get in touch with Bob Lowther, the historian who discovered Kent's existence, to check whether he had mistaken Kent's promotion as Kent's new employment, but unfortunately, he'd passed away a couple of years ago.
I have all those cuttings and no idea where to go from here. Then I saw your name in the edit history. Hence, this post. I've listed the selections from those articles in the Talk section of Kent's Wikipedia entry in case you're interested to know more. Thanks.
Canley, I noticed that you had made edits to resolve some earlier issues with this DYK nomination. Factorylad has not edited on Wikipedia for nearly four weeks, which means no response to the latest issues raised back on January 24. If there isn't a response soon to deal with these issues, the nomination will have to be closed. Would you be interested in doing more work here? If so, you can respond on the nomination page, if not, you can let me know here, and I can start to take steps to close the nomination. Whatever you decide, thank you very much for your work thus far. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:48, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
DYK for Sonia Humphrey
editOn 3 February 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sonia Humphrey, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Sonia Humphrey took the ABC to the Anti-Discrimination Board in 1984, after the broadcaster removed her from an on-air role, citing her pregnancy as a "visual overload" to viewers? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sonia Humphrey. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

editHey, could you go easy on (or at least document) the changes you're making to Campbell Newman? That random LNP dude has done so much damage to the article that it really needs a straight revert and for any changes of his to be specifically discussed before going back in, but it's getting more unsalvageable because you're intermingling good and sensible edits with his dreck, and I can't revert him without reverting you. The Drover's Wife (talk) 01:47, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Ronaldson resignation
editHi
Has he actually formally tendered his written resignation to the President of the Senate yet? I see no evidence of it. Just because the replacement senator has been preselected does not automatically mean his seat is suddenly vacant. He still has to resign. editHi, I just added some questions to (what I thought was) the talk page for Shadow Cabinet of Australia but just noticed the talk page is that of Abbott - what happened? Trying not to panic. JennyOz (talk) 05:15, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
- Looks like a page move half done, or half-undone. Someone moved the Shadow Cabinet of Australia page to Shadow Cabinet of Tony Abbott (to retain that information), then the Shadow Cabinet of Australia was changed to remove the redirect and fill in Shorten's shadow cabinet–however the redirect was not removed from the Talk:Shadow Cabinet of Australia page. I have fixed it up I think. --Canley (talk) 06:15, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Your contributed article, Results of the Australian federal election, 2016 (Queensland)
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Results of the Australian federal election, 2016 (Queensland). First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Australian federal election, 2016 (Queensland). Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Australian federal election, 2016 (Queensland) – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.
If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Yellow Dingo (talk) 11:14, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Enrollment sentence in electorate article body
editPer this, who was it that originally added the article body sentence for enrollment? I ask because it seems like needless duplication when there's a spot in the article infobox for it. To also have it displayed in an additional sentence in the article body looks out of place and is inconsistent. Thoughts? Timeshift (talk) 22:44, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
- It was added in the third edit by the article creator back in 2005! Normally I think details should appear in both the text and the infobox, but enrollment is a bit out of place in prose text (like a postcode or something—useful for quick reference if you need it but a sentence saying "The postcode of Glen Iris is 3146." in the lede looks weird and out of place). I wouldn't mind if it was removed, it's one less place it needs to be updated. --Canley (talk) 23:40, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Extended confirmed protection
editHello, Canley. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
Term starts
editHi, Canley.
Re this edit: I thought that the backdating of senators' terms to the previous 1 July applies only for the purpose of determining the rotation of seats. It does not apply for any other purpose, and that is why in general contexts their term start dates are always shown as the date of the election. Just as Archer's always did before your edit.
Is there something I'm missing? Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 09:51, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
- I've posted more about this @ Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australian politics. Best to keep the discussion there. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 10:26, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
editHello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
editHi Canley.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!
editHello, Canley. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

editI posed a JavaScript question at refdesk that you were kind enough to answer. Thank you.
I'm in the process of studying deep cloning, but in the meantime, the simple creation of a variable to hold the cloned content has stopped the script from working. Weird. By the way, I've posted this unexpected problem and the script at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#trying to create a toggled script, in case you are interested. The Transhumanist 08:46, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
