Numeracy and mathematical literacy

Hi! I've noticed you have started the article Numeracy to which mathematical literacy redirects. Should the two concepts be distinguished? Certainly numeracy is just a subset of mathematical literacy!--5.2.200.163 (talk) 11:41, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Looking for sources on "mathematical literacy" suggests that its usage is fairly restricted: probably in specialist pedagogic literature. "Numeracy" surely has wider currency. The normal naming practice for articles would keep the current title. Certainly definitions of mathematical literacy could form a section of the article, to begin with. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:59, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
It is good to begin with of course, but I think the development of separate articles is not precluded. Could those pedagogical sources be used to develop a separate article?--5.2.200.163 (talk) 13:23, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
If you look at something like [1], mathematical literacy might be framed more in the way of assessment, while as a neologism (of the later 1950s, I think) numeracy was more like an attempt to define a life skill. While mathematical literacy could be its own article, it might fail to be very satisfactory, through lack of specific sources. Charles Matthews (talk) 15:00, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Wikiquote

Hi, I would like to invite you to contribute to our sister project Wikiquote. Specifically I note that as an offshoot of your ODNB work you have created Wikipedia biographies of almost every occupation imaginable. As such can you look at this addition of mine which gives information on three occupations: 1) Carpenter 2) Ironworker 3) Goldsmith. Will you be able to find and contribute similar such quotes? Do let me know if you are interested in this. If you are uninterested can you consider pinging some folks in the reply message who can be potential contributors to Wikiquote. Also ping Dr. Blofeld if they are interested in this. Solomon7968 13:46, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

I'm preoccupied at present with Wikidata, in particular ODNB/DNB work that I'm probably the only person likely to push through. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:20, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Charles Matthews.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Charles Matthews. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Request

I am looking for a mathematician to help a numbskull to get a grasp of Fundamental theorem of Galois theory. I believe I have dyscalculia so do it with lots of pictures if you please.

My hobby is geo-physics and I am having a problem understanding duals such as teleconnected storms. Not that they are difficult to understand. It is all pretty obvious once you look but they devolve into different things.
Tropical storms for instance tend to produce earthquake swarms.
Extra-tropical storms on the other hand devolve into volcanoes especially where there is a shelf cloud "line-storm" involved.
If you are not interested can you please point me to someone that might be. I will put something up about Otto and Tokage which are operating at the moment on a blog so that I can explain them and for you to see for yourself how the swarms develop.

(edit conflict) :@1989: Please note the following flaws to the "system" related to draft articles. (1) This and the draft in the previous section were nominated at Articles for Creation, by an IP editor, who made no effort to inform me. (2) The reviewer "inform author" button at AfC does not inform the author. (3) The draft above was deleted (twice) by admins despite having the {{hang on}} template on it.
My conclusion is that the system being used for maintenance of the Draft: namespace is kludgy or broken; User:Sphilbrick seemed to think the buck should be passed back to you. The routing through AfC is artificial and fairly useless.
In any case you seem to be working through that IP number's nominations. I have untagged all of those, to save further time-wasting discussion. I create a large number of articles via drafts. A small proportion are stalled, for whatever reason. I don't think they are cruft, and I would delete any I had actually given up on, myself.Charles Matthews (talk) 06:44, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Kind of you. But I believe that the edit of 25 February 2002 attributed to me is done so in error. I started editing in June 2003. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:10, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Does that mean that this is inaccurate? That's quite odd. Lepricavark (talk) 15:34, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I think that is some sort of strangeness caused by migration of records c.2002. Not unheard of. I don't think I was even aware of Wikipedia in 2002. I was editing Sensei's Library, the go wiki, then, and found my way to MeatBall Wiki via a wiki Bus Stop (see the mention of the "bus tours" in that article). Which is when I first saw the name "Wikipedia" I believe. February 2002 sounds way too early. And start by creating a redirect? Well, I don't credit it. Speedy deletion nomination of Carlo Strozzi

Hello Charles Matthews,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Carlo Strozzi for deletion. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an unnecessary disambiguation page.

If you feel that the page shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Proposed deletion of 3 Irish senior clergy

Hi, User:Charles Matthews User:Fram has issued deletion proceedings against three of my articles: Edward Hoare (priest), Michael John Keatinge and Usher Lee I cannot see anywhere how I respond to these. As a Wikipedean who has beavered away with a few other stalwarts, such as yourself, I find this perplexing. This issue has been raised several times and each time the consensus seems to be that Anglican Archdeacons and Deans are notable by office. Many thanks in anticipation for any help you can give Bashereyre (talk) 19:32, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

In practical terms, User:PBS has dealt with the matter. WP:PROD mentions that primarily this process is for "uncontroversial deletion". You can remove your own articles from it.
I for one appreciate your efforts to document Anglican clergy, and clearly others do. The "archdeacon war" of a few years ago tested the water. I wouldn't say that notability is ex officio; but the historical case can be and has been made for the significance of these people. Keep up the good work!

Right, because those dates were automatically generated by Twinkle and I was going to correct the dates in the links after I merged the nominations into the previous day's discussion (which I have done now: merged them into the previous day, and corrected the links in the notifications above.) Your draft article, Draft:Liba Taub

Hello, Charles Matthews. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "Liba Taub".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 22:16, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Facto Post – Issue 1 – 14 June 2017

Editorial

This newsletter starts with the motto "common endeavour for 21st century content". To unpack that slogan somewhat, we are particularly interested in the new, post-Wikidata collection of techniques that are flourishing under the Wikimedia collaborative umbrella. To linked data, SPARQL queries and WikiCite, add gamified participation, text mining and new holding areas, with bots, tech and humans working harmoniously.

Scientists, librarians and Wikimedians are coming together and providing a more unified view of an emerging area. Further integration of both its community and its technical aspects can be anticipated.

While Wikipedia will remain the discursive heart of Wikimedia, data-rich and semantic content will support it. We'll aim to be both broad and selective in our coverage. This publication Facto Post (the very opposite of retroactive) and call to action are brought to you monthly by ContentMine.

Editor Charles Matthews. Please leave feedback for him.

If you wish to receive no further issues of Facto Post, please remove your name from our mailing list. Alternatively, to opt out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Opted-out of message delivery to your user talk page.

Thanks. Do you know if the church of St. Wilfrid, Staffordshire has an article please? Or should have one?Zigzig20s (talk) 15:34, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
I suspect that what is meant is a school chapel, of Cotton College. That used to be St Wilfrid's College, and in the image from the article you can see the spire of a chapel to the right. That could possibly be wrong, but it's plausible, and in which case the notability of the church by itself could be quite low. Charles Matthews (talk) 15:40, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Facto Post

Charles, thanks for the notiication/links on my talkpage. It does ask for feedback, so ... It's the first I've heard of this newsletter; perhaps a brief note above at the start of the section on the talkpage saying what its theme is and how often it's published might usher a greater proportion of recipients into the publication. Also, you might consider a slightly less saturated background colour—but maybe that's just my subjective take.

I hope you're well. Cheers. Tony (talk) 15:22, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. Oddly enough, you did comment at Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/2017-06-23/Op-ed! So I'm glad I followed up. Charles Matthews (talk) 16:06, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
Ah, I read your comment on the talkpage, and a few others, and was motivated to endorse yours; but my mind must have been in sieve mode at the time, so memories laid down are beyond dormancy! Wikidata has always been something of a mystery to me, even though I've seen multiple explanataions. Let's hope your work enables more WMians to engage with its mission. Tony (talk) 01:50, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
I see that The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences from 1960 had become by 2009 a slogan "the unreasonable effectiveness of data". That does speak to me. Thanks for dropping by. Charles Matthews (talk) 04:35, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Wikimania report

Interviewed by Facto Post at the hackathon, Lydia Pintscher of Wikidata said that the most significant recent development is that Wikidata now accounts for one third of Wikimedia edits. And the essential growth of human editing.

Internet-In-A-Box

Impressive development work on Internet-in-a-Box featured in the WikiMedFoundation annual conference on Thursday. Hardware is Raspberry Pi, running Linux and the Kiwix browser. It can operate as a wifi hotspot and support a local intranet in parts of the world lacking phone signal. The medical use case is for those delivering care, who have smartphones but have to function in clinics in just such areas with few reference resources. Wikipedia medical content can be served to their phones, and power supplied by standard lithium battery packages.

Yesterday Katherine Maher unveiled the draft Wikimedia 2030 strategy, featuring a picturesque metaphor, "roads, bridges and villages". Here "bridges" could do with illustration. Perhaps it stands for engineering round or over the obstacles to progress down the obvious highways. Internet-in-a-Box would then do fine as an example.

"Bridging the gap" explains a take on that same metaphor, with its human component. If you are at Wikimania, come talk to WikiFactMine at its stall in the Community Village, just by the 3D-printed display for Bassel Khartabil; come hear T Arrow talk at 3 pm today in Drummond West, Level 3.

  • Plaudit for the Medical Wikipedia app, content that is loaded into Internet-In-A-Box with other material, such as per-country documentation.

Facto Post – Issue 4 – 18 September 2017

Editorial: Conservation data

The IUCN Red List update of 14 September led with a threat to North American ash trees. The International Union for Conservation of Nature produces authoritative species listings that are peer-reviewed. Examples used as metonyms for loss of species and biodiversity, and discussion of extinction rates, are the usual topics covered in the media to inform us about this area. But actual data matters.

Dorstenia elata, a critically endangered South American herb, contained in Moraceae, the family of figs and mulberries

Clearly, conservation work depends on decisions about what should be done, and where. While animals, particularly mammals, are photogenic, species numbers run into millions. Plant species lie at the base of typical land-based food chains, and vegetation is key to the habitats of most animals.

ContentMine dictionaries, for example as tabulated at d:Wikidata:WikiFactMine/Dictionary list, enable detailed control of queries about endangered species, in their taxonomic context. To target conservation measures properly, species listings running into the thousands are not what is needed: range maps showing current distribution are. Between the will to act, and effective steps taken, the services of data handling are required. There is now no reason at all why Wikidata should not take up the burden.

Editor Charles Matthews. Please leave feedback for him.

Sir Thomas Cookes, 2nd Baronet

I was looking for biography articles that I could link to the Siege of Worcester a "Thomas Cookes, of Bentley" is one of the Parliamentary committee who controlled the town at the end of the siege. This search lead me to Sir Thomas Cookes, 2nd Baronet as you can see in the history of that aritle, I made an edit that linked the ODNB to the web article, and added The first edition of this text:   Dictionary of National Biography. London: Smith, Elder & Co. 1885–1900. {{cite encyclopedia}}: Missing or empty |title= (help) to the citation, but so far that is all the editing I have done.

I ran earwig against the article Sir Thomas Cookes, 2nd Baronet it show that a number of sentence copied word for word from ODNB. (I am temporarily leaving a copy in my user space so that you can see the earwig return yourself). Aa you are better than I at summarising and merging DNB and ONDB together, please could you take a look and make any adjustments you think best. -- PBS (talk) 16:28, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

I see paraphrase, but not close paraphrasing such as to make me wince. Of course it is always a judgement call. Looking back at the history, from the first version there was that paraphrasing. My preferred approach would be to "dilute" it by expanding. Charles Matthews (talk) 16:47, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
thanks for taking a look. As you think there is no need to worry about as a copyright violation, I will remove my copy in my user space and move on. -- PBS (talk) 10:06, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
I've worked over the article. It should read better, now. Charles Matthews (talk) 10:47, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Miah

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Missing women bios

Hi Charles. Is there any way you can generate further missing lists by country for Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest/Missing articles from Wikidata? Like a list of missing Armenian women etc?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:23, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

This query for Armenia generates 180 hits. It is easy to change one Q-number for any other country. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:51, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

Are those all missing articles on English wiki?? How is a list generated on here? Ipigott has done some work with this already I believe.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:29, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

Answers. (1) Oops, a NOT was missing. [6] corrects that, and has 216 hits. (2) From a query, it is easy to generate a Listeria list on a page of its own. Obviously you have another source of advice, though. Charles Matthews (talk) 16:12, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, there will still be some countries without a list so that helps.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:25, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld There was already a list for Armenia. I tried to create lists for many other countries but there were no results on quite a few. If you come across any other countries which seem to be missing, let me know and I'll see whether we can get anything from Wikidata. I'll also take a more careful look at the Asia contest list soon.--Ipigott (talk) 12:37, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for that. If you can link the lists at the top of the sections in Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest/Missing articles which currently have lists we'll know what is missing still then. no rush though, we've got a month on this.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:41, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

Editorial: Annotations

Annotation is nothing new. The glossators of medieval Europe annotated between the lines, or in the margins of legal manuscripts of texts going back to Roman times, and created a new discipline. In the form of web annotation, the idea is back, with texts being marked up inline, or with a stand-off system. Where could it lead?

ContentMine operates in the field of text and data mining (TDM), where annotation, simply put, can add value to mined text. It now sees annotation as a possible advance in semi-automation, the use of human judgement assisted by bot editing, which now plays a large part in Wikidata tools. While a human judgement call of yes/no, on the addition of a statement to Wikidata, is usually taken as decisive, it need not be. The human assent may be passed into an annotation system, and stored: this idea is standard on Wikisource, for example, where text is considered "validated" only when two different accounts have stated that the proof-reading is correct. A typical application would be to require more than one person to agree that what is said in the reference translates correctly into the formal Wikidata statement. Rejections are also potentially useful to record, for machine learning.

As a contribution to data integrity on Wikidata, annotation has much to offer. Some "hard cases" on importing data are much more difficult than average. There are for example biographical puzzles: whether person A in one context is really identical with person B, of the same name, in another context. In science, clinical medicine require special attention to sourcing (WP:MEDRS), and is challenging in terms of connecting findings with the methodology employed. Currently decisions in areas such as these, on Wikipedia and Wikidata, are often made ad hoc. In particular there may be no audit trail for those who want to check what is decided.

Annotations are subject to a World Wide Web Consortium standard, and behind the terminology constitute a simple JSON data structure. What WikiFactMine proposes to do with them is to implement the MEDRS guideline, as a formal algorithm, on bibliographical and methodological data. The structure will integrate with those inputs the human decisions on the interpretation of scientific papers that underlie claims on Wikidata. What is added to Wikidata will therefore be supported by a transparent and rigorous system that documents decisions.

An example of the possible future scope of annotation, for medical content, is in the first link below. That sort of detailed abstract of a publication can be a target for TDM, adds great value, and could be presented in machine-readable form. You are invited to discuss the detailed proposal on Wikidata, via its talk page.

Facto Post homepage?

Thanks for the Facto Post I found at WT:CHEMISTRY, interesting. Just this question: could you provide a link (once here, and maybe in-paper next time) to the page of origin? Is there a WikiProject? Thanks. -DePiep (talk) 19:53, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

d:Wikidata:WikiFactMine for the project pages. It is not a WikiProject, because it is a grant-funded project run by ContentMine Ltd. On the other hand we are very interested in working with volunteers. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:57, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanx. P.S. I like the nice 1495 print illustration. -DePiep (talk) 20:26, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Arabic and Cyrillic world

Hi, I noticed a lot of the wikidata lists still have the main pages in Arabic or Cyrillic text Russian/Azerbaijan etc. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality/Saudi Arabia are mostly Arabic red links. Is this something somebody on Wikidata could work on?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:17, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Using Google Translate, not so hard, but not so reliable, either. Romanisation isn't trivial. Charles Matthews (talk) 15:18, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

Sarah Burger Stearns

Thanks for adding Sarah Burger Stearns to Wikidata. I had already added it, so I have merged the two wikidata items. Leschnei (talk) 23:36, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

WikidataCon Berlin 28–9 October 2017

WikidataCon 2017 group photo

Under the heading rerum causas cognescere, the first ever Wikidata conference got under way in the Tagesspiegel building with two keynotes, One was on YAGO, about how a knowledge base conceived ten years ago if you assume automatic compilation from Wikipedia. The other was from manager Lydia Pintscher, on the "state of the data". Interesting rumours flourished: the mix'n'match tool and its 600+ datasets, mostly in digital humanities, to be taken off the hands of its author Magnus Manske by the WMF; a Wikibase incubator site is on its way. Announcements came in talks: structured data on Wikimedia Commons is scheduled to make substantive progress by 2019. The lexeme development on Wikidata is now not expected to make the Wiktionary sites redundant, but may facilitate automated compilation of dictionaries.

WD-FIST explained

And so it went, with five strands of talks and workshops, through to 11 pm on Saturday. Wikidata applies to GLAM work via metadata. It may be used in education, raises issues such as author disambiguation, and lends itself to different types of graphical display and reuse. Many millions of SPARQL queries are run on the site every day. Over the summer a large open science bibliography has come into existence there.

Wikidata's fifth birthday party on the Sunday brought matters to a close. See a dozen and more reports by other hands.

Signpost request

Hi Charles, would it be alright if the Signpost republished your WikidataCon report from Facto Post #6? - Evad37 [talk] 02:43, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Sure. There is some garbling in the first para, sadly, but easily fixed. Charles Matthews (talk) 05:05, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Help finding someone who can run a bot!

Hi Charles, Thanks for the re-tweet two days ago for our Cochrane-Wikipedia Initiative project. I appreciate your support! I hope that your work on contentmine continues to go well.

Do you have any idea where I could find a volunteer who would be willing to run a bot on Wikipedia for me once in a while? We had a few volunteers running the Cochrane-Wikipedia bot every few months, but unfortunately, they are not able to help any more.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Cochrane_update/August_2017

The bot labels Cochrane Reviews that are out of date in Wikipedia with the "[needs update] template" and creates a list with old and new PMIDs for volunteers to work on. I am told this is done with a Python Script. I would also like to create a similar bot that would tag reviews that have been retracted by the publisher and on PubMed, so volunteers can update this important information in Wikipedia.

Unfortunately, I do not have any coding or programming experience and do not know where to begin! If you know of anyone who would be interested in helping, I would appreciate it!

Thank you again, Jenny JenOttawa (talk) 02:43, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jenny. It wouldn't be me - don't have the skills - but there are a few people I could ask. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:54, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
That would be great, thank you! Please feel free to share my contact information with them. JenOttawa (talk) 13:39, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
I've tried the matters arising on User:RexxS, and we came up with a number of ideas. Charles Matthews (talk) 17:21, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Charles Matthews. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
