Cetacea portal

I have posted my opinion on your new cetacea portal layout on its talk page. I like it! I just wanted to mention it to you here in case you don't check the talk for it very often. --Belugaperson 21:20, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Just a quick hello to say thanks for cleaning up my poor attempt at html with the article box I created on the Cetaceans portal page. Hope you like it by the way, decided to do it after I noticed a couple of times people mentioning creating a directory of all the species (think I got them all) just gotta hope now that the MfD results in keep. Shark diagrams

If you are licensing them for free distribution, you might consider uploading them to wikimedia commons, so the other language wikipedias can use them as well. Cheers Yomanganitalk 13:23, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

I've never moved anything from EN wikipedia to commons (only from FR), but as far as I know you have to move them manually - i.e. load them up in commons and then delete them here. Yomanganitalk 18:08, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

No, I haven't done anything on yet apart from raise the idea, I'm a bit busy this week, so if you want to start it be my guest. Yomanganitalk 16:30, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I've added this to the Community Portal - it transcludes the Wikipedia:WikiProject Sharks/Collaboration/Current item, so it will update automatically when we change that. Yomanganitalk 16:00, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Portal

Thanks for reminding me - I got halfway through redoing the colour scheme and forgot about it. Should be Ok now. Yomanganitalk 15:04, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Categories

I see you are moving pages from sharks into the subcategories - personally I don't think this is a good idea as it means that you can't see them all in one place in the category list and have to drill down into the sub-categories. Yomanganitalk 23:30, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Yep, that's what I'd started (very slowly) doing. Yomanganitalk 23:38, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Bot?

Yes I have a bot, but it is uncommissioned for now and it is a bit questionable if it is allowed to add project templates, I did the portal using AWB and there are way more pages than I though, it will take 2-3 hours to do them all if you are to make one edit every 30 second. I agree we should put the template up and I will do it, but I think I should ask for aproval for my bot and the bot aproval process is in flux for now. But if you can wait 1-2 weeks I will do it. Stefan 23:57, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Bot + Categories

I see your discussion above, this is also something that a bot could do. I will look into it .... at a later date. :-) Stefan 23:59, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I was just looking at it when I got your message. Looks great. Yomanganitalk 10:24, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Boxes

Hi Stefan, On Bigeye thresher talk there are 2 boxes - what is the difference? GrahamBould 06:07, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

WP:BOTREQ

I'll tag the talk pages but can you give me every categoy you want tagged including the subcats on the list. please post them to User:Betacommand/Sharks. I will then create a list from those Categories of pages to tag. When i complete the list you will need to look it over and remove any pages that shouldnt get tagged.

PS. I think you should have a category something along the lines of Category:WikiProject Sharks on the template, that way you can quickly see all of the pages in the Project.

Maps

Great maps. But noticed that the distribution in the map for pigeye shark is quite different to FishBase's. Might bear double-checking... Cheers GrahamBould 17:28, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

The original is closer to the FAO catalogue (missing the questionable locations indicted by question marks in the catalogue). Fishbase lists it as occuring the the areas shown in the first map (not surprisingly because they use the FAO catalogue as their reference) and the Fishbase point map intro shows the same locations and lists 79 points while actually showing only a fraction of that number - personally I'd switch back to the original. What book are you taking your originals from? Yomanganitalk 07:59, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Undoubtedly they will be derived from Compagno's FAO catalogue, which is what FishBase mostly bases its distribution information on. I'd certainly take them as reliable unless they are wildly different. The pigeye shark has some quite detailed distribution data in the catalogue, that I will add later, which tends to confirm that the original map was right. I've created a page: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sharks/Items needing attention where we can list possible non-life threatening queries such as this and look at them later. Yomanganitalk 09:28, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

I checked the FAO catalogue, after you reminded me about the crocodile shark and it appears that the light blue directly corresponds to the areas that are unconfirmed in the range, so barring further evidence I've added that as a key. Yomanganitalk 10:46, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Class/subclass

You are right. I had been thinking something was not quite right, but didn't check up properly. Oh dear, there are probably lots of taxoboxes where I've got it wrong. It can be solved by having a subclass entry in the taxobox, which, if you agree, I will introduce to all the ones I've got wrong (& stop doing new articles for a while until done). Thanks for bringing it to my attention. While I've got your attention, what Categories should these shark articles be in? Cheers GrahamBould 17:37, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Just an update - I've finished fixing the Class/subclass problem on all the sharks/chimaeras I could find. If there are any I've missed just let me know. GrahamBould 17:29, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Transcluding species

I had a look at doing this about a month ago and came up against the same problem - I just haven't had time to get back to it yet. I think the solution is to use a div with an inset (or a table with a blank first column) in the including page and then just use a simple one bullet point list at the lower level. If that isn't clear I can knock up an example. Cheers, Yomanganitalk 13:28, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Here's an example anyway:

*Family [[Balaenidae]] <div style="padding-left:10px"> *{{Balaena_taxonomy}} *{{Eubalaena_taxonomy}} </div>

Yomanganitalk 13:45, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Yep, you have to work from the bottom up with this - the layout won't work very well trying to mix and match which subpages are transcluded and which are hardcoded. I think it is easier to maintain in the end, although one drawback is you can't state "Below are the x species of such and such", since somebody may update the list but not all the pages it is transcluded to. Yomanganitalk 14:21, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Have you had any joy with this? I was thinking of starting work on the list of sharks, but it would be good to adopt the same approach for both projects (then afterwards, we can quickly nip round and do the same for the whole animal kingdom :) ) Yomanganitalk 09:21, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Looks good. I'll start work on the sharks next week, as I'm fairly busy this week (feel free to jump in if you aren't busy). I'm sure there is a work round if you ever do need to list a higher taxon, but like you say, it's doubtful you'll ever need to do that. Cheers, Yomanganitalk 00:52, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Francis Joseph Cole.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Francis Joseph Cole.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Fin Whale

I think I'm about done adding large amounts of new content to the Fin Whale article. I'd like to eventually submit this as a featured article candidate. And I think the remaining issues from the current peer review have been addressed. One of the things I noticed is that you converted many of the spellings from American english to British english. Looking through the history of the article, I see that it originally used British english, so WP guidelines suggest that we stick to that. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with the differences, so can you do a review of the article to ensure that my subsequent additions didn't add any more American spellings to it? That's the kind of issue that would be raised during the featured article candidate review. I've also noticed that you converted numbers like 100,000 to 100 000, but then changed some of them back. As far as I can tell, I've changed the rest of them back and the ones I've added since then definitely would have had commas in them WP:MOSNUM suggests that commas are optional, and they prevent the numbers from being split in the middle if the line breaks kick in, so if they need to be switched back, the nonbreaking space code &nbsp; needs to be added. Unfortunately, that disrupts the readability of the source code, so I'm crossing my fingers that it won't be necessary. Thanks. -- Neil916 (Talk) 17:30, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I got impatient and went ahead and listed this article as a featured article candidate. The discussion is at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Fin Whale. Neil916 (Talk) 19:00, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Units

Hi Chris, Thanks for all the tidying up work. Wanted to ask your opinion on units - my view is that the units should be written in full the first time, then abreviated afterwards in the same article (but I've been slack in that for my articles I only use the abreviation!) Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers) is not absolutely clear. What do you think? GrahamBould 09:37, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to be pedantic, Chris, but I've read the style article a number of times but can't see where it talks about subsequent mentions of units. Even the rule about the primary unit being in full & the conversion in parenthesis being abreviated is odd. Why not both in full, at least the first time? There seems to be a vacuum. I wonder who writes these things. GrahamBould 10:28, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, i don't really get it that well either. I would have thought the best thing was to have the first mention of any type of unit, whether it is in parenthesis or not to be typed in full, and then after that abbreviated, since it is quite obvious what ft and m and such mean. The fifth point states that you should 'Spell out units in the text'. I gather from this that they mean any units used in the text directly (ie not including ones in parenthesis) should be spelled out and not abbreviated. Also an automated peer review of Fin Whale mentioned that source units should be spelled out. Someone else changed the fin whale article to reflect this. But maybe not all need to be spelled out. I have asked on WP:HD so hopefully a useful answer might come back. chris_huh 10:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Artistic talents

If you get a moment and feel like exercising your artistic talents, could you knock up a pic of shark threat display? I'm working on the article, but it would really benefit from a picture or two. There are a couple of pics here to base it on if you don't have any: Elasmo research pic and the nicer New brunswick one. Cheers, Yomanganitalk 10:55, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Lightning-fast and spot-on. Thanks. Yomanganitalk 11:46, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Somewhat more slowly, it has made it into the article: Shark threat display. Yomanganitalk 12:55, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Cetaceans Portal

The portal is in excellent condition to be featured. I left a question on Portal talk:Cetaceans/News. If you can answer it, I'll standardize the news. As the featured portal standards say, we should showcase high-quality articles, so how about some of our good and featured articles for future Selected Articles? Thank you for working on the portal and nominating it. --Gray PorpoisePhocoenidae, not Delphinidae 14:30, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

I have been working on making sure that the selected articles are good, although i don't think they all have been featured or good articles. Definately the best articles should be shown, but i also beleive that good articles (not GA ones, just good ones) should also have a place as it will help to get these more mention and maybe more work could be done on them. I put up Whale watching, IWC , Narwhal and Fin Whale as, although they were not GA or FA, they were either topical or just quite an interesting read. IWC was up there during the St Kitts and Nevis conference, and Fin Whale we are trying to get up to FA (Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Fin Whale). But yes maybe we should focus on the FA and GA ones now, and try and get some more as GA. I think there are quite a few cetacean articles worthy of GA, we just need to do a little work on presenting them and nominate them. I have restarted the discussion on Portal talk:Cetaceans about selected article so we can choose some for the next few months. What would be nice is if we could set it up to change automatically every two weeks but i don't think there is a way for that, every week might be too quick and we might run out of articles too soon. We might want to check that out. Chris_huhtalk 15:08, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I think showcasing some good articles would be effective, as they are high-quality but still have room for improvement. Your performance in coordinating WikiProject Cetaceans is excellent. --Gray PorpoisePhocoenidae, not Delphinidae 16:33, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Well thank you very much, sadly it appears to really just be us two working on it. Neil916 has been busy doing some writing but i am think now that we should start to get the assessment sorted out a bit more and work on getting from GA. I am thinking that Sei Whale is going to do quite well, and with a bit of work could get to FA. Chris_huhtalk 16:57, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, it does appear to be quite well. Although it still needs a bit of work to get to FA, I'm nominating it for Good Article Status. --Gray PorpoisePhocoenidae, not Delphinidae 17:12, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Re:List of cetacea

Looks excellent! The only two suggestions I have are:

  • Rename to List of Cetacea (proper capitalisation) or, more preferably, List of cetaceans (to show that it's a list of members of the order, not the order itself).
  • If someone can come up with a good introduction that's not a duplicate of Cetacea's intro, it would be better.

Otherwise, it looked like a featured list from the first edit! I added some categories. --Gray Porpoise 19:46, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

It's used for articles that need to be created, but it appears that this class does not apply to WikiProject Cetaceans. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 21:15, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
You would create the talk page with the CetaTalk template. I did so to Talk:List of extinct cetaceans, but removed the needed-class label when in realisation that it's not listed on the assessment scale. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 22:28, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Baiji captive dates

Hi. Please see Talk:Baiji#Reference_for_captive_specimens. I believe the date you reverted for the female dolphin captured in 1986 is wrong. It doesn't really make sense if the dolphin lived in captivity for 2.5 years but died the same year it was caught. Thanks. Xiner (talk, email) 17:45, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

I think that it probably come in the same time as Lian Lian but then survived for longer (the source must have just put the wrong second date). I can't seem to find any other information, so i suppose we can either fix it so that she did live for 2.5 years, or take her off. At [1] it mentions that Lian Lian and Zhen Zhen were caught at the same time but she lived for 2.5 years so it must be the date that is wrong. Chris_huhtalk 11:58, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
I see what you mean. Well, press articles and the Wuhan foundation have pages that list 09/1988 as the date of death for Zhen Zhen (the link are on the talk page, linked above, and I also posted a translated summary there), so I think we should update it to that. Indeed they arrived together and are supposedly a father-daughter pair, how they know that I'm not sure. You can actually see "1988年9月" on the Wuhan page, and that's when Zhen Zhen died of pneumonia. SVG images

Dear Chris, have you got your images of cetaceans in SVG version too? If not, I will try to draw them in SVG. --Snek01 12:05, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

I was going to make them as SVG but wasn't sure how. Is there an easy program to convert them into SVG, i originally made them in flash which might be easier. Chris_huhtalk 18:56, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
I do not know how to convert them from flash to svg yet but I hope it will be possible. There are few converting programs on internet. Could you send me the one file at least to michal.manas@tiscali.cz ? I will test the programs and I will try find the solution. I will inform you what I will find. --Snek01 23:16, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
I was looking for an usefull program. Download Flash Exploit http://www.3d2toy.com/downloads.php This program is for Windows, are you Windows user? It can export svg images from swf file. It works with nearly all of my testing files. Let me know if it works with your files. --Snek01 12:27, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Cetaceans

This month's Portal:Cetaceans material has not been scheduled. I may attempt to put some together, but I'm not very experienced, and your help is needed as soon as possible. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 21:01, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Oh yeah, sorry about that i have been busy with real world stuff. I have added some stuff, but i wasn't too sure which ones to use so if you want to change them you can. Chris_huhtalk 00:27, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. The selected items are good choices, although I may change the "Did you know..." to include facts that have not been mentioned in previous months. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 01:06, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
May I have feedback on the new Did you know facts? --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 01:51, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
They look good, they needed changing, i was just in a rush before. Have you added them to the list of Cetacean DYK (or are they form that). Chris_huhtalk 12:16, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I added them. However, when I added to the news section, I kind of messed up the formatting. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 00:54, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

IWC

Hi chris,

Thanks for tidying up my recent changes to the IWC meetings by formatting them into the table ... I was going to try and figure out how to do that today ( it looked crappy as I left it last night ) ... is there a page on Wikipedia anywhere that details how to format tables as well as how to begin new pages etc? I´ll be editing the IWC page(s) massively in the coming weeks and would like to leave my changes looking neat ;) cheers SammytheSeal 07:45, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Hey, have a look at the Help pages (in particular Help:Contents/Editing_Wikipedia) and for more specific info on tables have a look at Help:Table, its quite long but got most of the things you will want. As for starting a new page: Help:Starting_a_new_page. If you need any more help don't hesitate to ask. I am a bit bust in real life at the moment, but i always keep a check on whaling and cetacean stuff. Chris_huhtalk 12:44, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
